0:00:04 > 0:00:08I am Stephen McCauley and Derry/Londonderry is my hometown.
0:00:08 > 0:00:11In the second instalment of our short films
0:00:11 > 0:00:14featuring inspirational artists from the Northwest, I have come
0:00:14 > 0:00:17back to the Playhouse Theatre to catch up with Soak,
0:00:17 > 0:00:20AKA Bridie Monds-Watson.
0:00:20 > 0:00:23We'll find out how the first few months of 2013
0:00:23 > 0:00:26have unfolded for her as a singer songwriter
0:00:26 > 0:00:29and also for the wider music scene here in the city.
0:00:29 > 0:00:32Well, Bridie, it's 2013.
0:00:32 > 0:00:34It's here. There's no running away from it.
0:00:34 > 0:00:37So it started off with Sons and Daughters.
0:00:37 > 0:00:38That was the big opening concert.
0:00:38 > 0:00:42It was an incredible night, wasn't it? It was pretty amazing.
0:00:42 > 0:00:45I mean, like, just all the acts that were there were great.
0:00:45 > 0:00:48The whole set-up and atmosphere. Did you see the atmosphere in there?
0:00:48 > 0:00:49It was, like... It was remarkable.
0:00:49 > 0:00:52Everybody was just so buzzing for the City of Culture
0:00:52 > 0:00:55and just to be there and that was class!
0:00:55 > 0:00:58I think for me the thing that really struck me was the fact that you had
0:00:58 > 0:01:01that line-up for the first time in history together on the one stage.
0:01:01 > 0:01:04All these massive, kind of, international Derry icons. Yes.
0:01:04 > 0:01:07Now for tonight's youngest performer. She is only 16,
0:01:07 > 0:01:09she's a huge talent
0:01:09 > 0:01:13and she's here to sing her own composition, Sea Creatures.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15Please welcome... Soak!
0:01:15 > 0:01:16CHEERING
0:01:16 > 0:01:18I feel like that was kind of my introduction
0:01:18 > 0:01:21to the wider Derry audience. You know, like the people who wouldn't
0:01:21 > 0:01:23necessarily come out and watch gigs around town.
0:01:23 > 0:01:27'That was a great way to sort of get what I can do musically, across.'
0:01:27 > 0:01:29I'm Soak and this is Sea Creatures.
0:01:31 > 0:01:35'I was the youngest on that stage. Like, to be so young'
0:01:35 > 0:01:39and among that line-up like Neil Hannon and just... everybody!
0:01:39 > 0:01:43And then, Frank doing the orchestra was so cool.
0:01:45 > 0:01:47# The stars and moons
0:01:47 > 0:01:49# Remind me of you
0:01:49 > 0:01:51# I don't know what to say
0:01:51 > 0:01:53# It might make you worse
0:01:53 > 0:01:55# I don't understand
0:01:55 > 0:01:59# What her problem is I think she's just a fish. #
0:01:59 > 0:02:01Let's talk about the orchestra,
0:02:01 > 0:02:03because the orchestra was a major feature in your song
0:02:03 > 0:02:05and I remember watching it
0:02:05 > 0:02:07and, you know, I'm used to seeing you playing Sea Creatures,
0:02:07 > 0:02:11solo acoustic, but halfway through the song, this massive orchestra
0:02:11 > 0:02:15came through, so you know, what was that like for you, doing that live?
0:02:15 > 0:02:19It was one of the best things I've done with that song, ever.
0:02:19 > 0:02:22# I don't think they know what love is... #
0:02:22 > 0:02:25I've played Sea Creatures about 400 times now,
0:02:25 > 0:02:29and it is the same thing and I try to change it up, tempo-wise
0:02:29 > 0:02:31and put different words in different places,
0:02:31 > 0:02:34but the orchestra was so tight and the arrangement
0:02:34 > 0:02:37was so brilliant that it just worked brilliantly.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40But I suppose when you play that live yourself on your own,
0:02:40 > 0:02:41you can dictate the tempo,
0:02:41 > 0:02:44but when there's an orchestra you have to get that right. Exactly.
0:02:44 > 0:02:48When playing live, I can slow down even a tiny bit, nobody will notice,
0:02:48 > 0:02:50but when you are playing with an orchestra,
0:02:50 > 0:02:51timing has to be completely on-time,
0:02:51 > 0:02:54like if you mess up, the orchestra is going to mess up.
0:02:54 > 0:02:58It is not that it was difficult, it was just scary.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01Like, what if I don't do it, what if I go baaa... ? You know what I mean?
0:03:01 > 0:03:02Even if I wasn't doing it,
0:03:02 > 0:03:06but it was just that fear in the back of my head.
0:03:06 > 0:03:08# They don't really care
0:03:08 > 0:03:10# Sea creatures
0:03:10 > 0:03:12# Interfere... #
0:03:12 > 0:03:14It's funny because watching you doing that,
0:03:14 > 0:03:16you didn't look even the slightest bit fazed!
0:03:16 > 0:03:17People keep telling me that,
0:03:17 > 0:03:20but really, in my head, I am going like, no, no, no, you know?
0:03:22 > 0:03:23# They don't know... #
0:03:23 > 0:03:26There's a great sense of pride that night as well, I think
0:03:26 > 0:03:29about the city? Yeah. Whenever Snow Patrol walked out on that stage,
0:03:29 > 0:03:33the crowd just went absolutely bonkers.
0:03:33 > 0:03:35It is our great pleasure to be here tonight.
0:03:35 > 0:03:37Thank you so much for having us.
0:03:37 > 0:03:39Whenever I played with them back before Christmas,
0:03:39 > 0:03:42they played Chasing Cars and the audience was really into it,
0:03:42 > 0:03:45they were really excited and energetic and whatnot.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48But it was a completely different atmosphere then
0:03:48 > 0:03:51whenever they played that in Derry and it just had that little
0:03:51 > 0:03:55special feeling and you can't really explain that but it was amazing.
0:03:56 > 0:03:59# Ooo-ooo, for you...
0:04:01 > 0:04:05# For me-e-e... #
0:04:05 > 0:04:08Bridie, I have a sneaking suspicion we're going to catch up
0:04:08 > 0:04:10with you again very soon, possibly at the Radio One Big Weekend.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13Who knows? For the time being, thanks so much for joining us.
0:04:13 > 0:04:14Thanks for having me again.
