0:00:34 > 0:00:39'So get ready for a brand-new era. I promise you're going to love it!'
0:00:39 > 0:00:41I know I would.
0:00:44 > 0:00:48'Over 50 years old and loved around the world, Doctor who
0:00:48 > 0:00:50'has picked up millions of fans along the way,
0:00:50 > 0:00:53'and none more dedicated than Peter Capaldi.
0:00:53 > 0:00:57'Announced to the world as the 12th Doctor back in 2013,
0:00:57 > 0:01:00'Peter is now living his childhood dream.
0:01:00 > 0:01:04'But this isn't the first time Peter has appeared in the show.
0:01:04 > 0:01:06'Five years earlier, he got a guest role
0:01:06 > 0:01:09'staring alongside the 10th Doctor.'
0:01:09 > 0:01:11Lobus Caecilius.
0:01:11 > 0:01:12'The script came in an e-mail.'
0:01:12 > 0:01:15Usually, you read the script and say, "Yes, I'd like to do it,"
0:01:15 > 0:01:17but I said, "I'll just do it."
0:01:17 > 0:01:21Yeah, it's great! I absolutely love it. I could do this for ever.
0:01:21 > 0:01:23It's a delight.
0:01:23 > 0:01:25'Well, his wish has definitely come true.
0:01:25 > 0:01:28'We caught up with Peter at his very first read through
0:01:28 > 0:01:29'to see how the job's been going.'
0:01:29 > 0:01:32It seems to have been a long time that I've been the new Doctor Who.
0:01:32 > 0:01:35People keep saying to me "How's it going? What's happening?"
0:01:35 > 0:01:38Well... I haven't done anything!
0:01:38 > 0:01:40I've spent seven months being the new Doctor Who
0:01:40 > 0:01:42and not getting on with it.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45'Well, Peter is obviously eager to get stuck into his new role,
0:01:45 > 0:01:49'but, first things first, time for some introductions.'
0:01:49 > 0:01:51Peter Hannah. I play the policeman.
0:01:51 > 0:01:53Dan Starkey playing Strax.
0:01:53 > 0:01:54You know who I am.
0:01:54 > 0:01:56LAUGHTER
0:01:56 > 0:01:58Yes, well, it's quite an extraordinary position to be in
0:01:58 > 0:02:02to sort of say, "Hello, I'm Peter, and I'm playing this iconic,
0:02:02 > 0:02:06"historically much-loved character that's been around for 50 years."
0:02:06 > 0:02:10It's difficult to know quite how to phrase that other than to say...
0:02:10 > 0:02:13I'm Peter Capaldi and I'm the Doctor.
0:02:13 > 0:02:14CHEERING
0:02:14 > 0:02:16'Wow! What an exciting moment.
0:02:16 > 0:02:19'I wonder what lead writer, Steven, thought about it.'
0:02:19 > 0:02:20The most exciting thing for me
0:02:20 > 0:02:24was that it was the very first time we saw Peter and Jenna together.
0:02:24 > 0:02:27Egomaniac? You were talking about me?
0:02:27 > 0:02:30We got to the read through of the big, long restaurant scene
0:02:30 > 0:02:31which always worried me a bit
0:02:31 > 0:02:33cos it's a long scene with just two people talking.
0:02:33 > 0:02:37Clara, what is happening right now, in this restaurant, to you AND me,
0:02:37 > 0:02:40is more important than your egomania.
0:02:40 > 0:02:42Nothing is more important than my egomania!
0:02:42 > 0:02:45That was the first time we actually saw the new TARDIS team
0:02:45 > 0:02:48in action, and that was properly exciting.
0:02:48 > 0:02:51The dynamic is unlikely friendship but just totally works
0:02:51 > 0:02:52and totally feels natural.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55That's the way I feel that we get on together really well like that.
0:02:55 > 0:02:57Unlikely friendship that just works.
0:02:57 > 0:02:59BOTH: Geronimo!
0:02:59 > 0:03:00'And now for a little treat.
0:03:00 > 0:03:04'Here's a snippet of Peter playing the Doctor for the very first time.'
0:03:04 > 0:03:07I never know where they come from, the faces.
0:03:07 > 0:03:09They just pop up. Whoosh, zap - face.
0:03:09 > 0:03:12It's all right up until the eyebrows, and then it just goes haywire.
0:03:12 > 0:03:16They're attack eyebrows. You could take bottle tops off with these!
0:03:18 > 0:03:19This is it.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22The genie's out of the bottle so let's see what happens.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26'So, while Peter headed off to get suited and booted,
0:03:26 > 0:03:30'we were poised ready to capture the very first day on set.'
0:03:30 > 0:03:31Action!
0:03:31 > 0:03:32Madame Vastra, thank God!
0:03:32 > 0:03:35'And, of course, there are few familiar faces.'
0:03:35 > 0:03:37Ah, first day. First day of filming.
0:03:37 > 0:03:42This...this is supposed to be down by the Thames.
0:03:42 > 0:03:46'Oh, and we couldn't forget the big, angry dinosaur that turned up, too.'
0:03:46 > 0:03:48Yes, we're all looking rather skyward
0:03:48 > 0:03:50because there's this huge dinosaur.
0:03:50 > 0:03:54'So, without an actual dinosaur on set, is it tough to imagine one
0:03:54 > 0:03:56'actually being there?'
0:03:56 > 0:03:59I don't know. No, of course not! It's my job.
0:04:00 > 0:04:02'Well, the dinosaur itself may be CGI
0:04:02 > 0:04:05'but be careful where you put your hands.
0:04:05 > 0:04:07'The dinosaur spit is...
0:04:07 > 0:04:09'Well, it's real... Honest!'
0:04:10 > 0:04:11Dinosaur gunk!
0:04:11 > 0:04:14'Yes, this angry dinosaur coughs up the TARDIS. Nice(!)'
0:04:14 > 0:04:16Action!
0:04:16 > 0:04:19The giant dinosaur from the distant past has just vomited
0:04:19 > 0:04:20a blue box from outer space.
0:04:20 > 0:04:24'But someone is not deterred by dino slime.'
0:04:24 > 0:04:25If you wouldn't mind.
0:04:25 > 0:04:28Strax is working with Madame Vastra and Jenny now and helps them out
0:04:28 > 0:04:29with military situations like this.
0:04:29 > 0:04:32I think Strax sees everything as a military situation.
0:04:33 > 0:04:37Exit the box and surrender to the glory of the Sontaran Empire.
0:04:37 > 0:04:40'Well, if a huge dinosaur isn't enough to scare the living daylights
0:04:40 > 0:04:45'out of you, this episode introduced an even more frightening new enemy.'
0:04:45 > 0:04:48Half-Face Man is terrifying.
0:04:48 > 0:04:49Bring her.
0:04:49 > 0:04:51His physicality is brilliant.
0:04:51 > 0:04:53You really watch his walk and his movements.
0:04:53 > 0:04:55It's fantastic. It's so finely tuned.
0:04:55 > 0:04:57He's our sophisticated droid.
0:04:57 > 0:05:00It looks like clockwork inside his head.
0:05:00 > 0:05:05He's wearing a silicone prosthetic to simulate this hollow part
0:05:05 > 0:05:08that completes with the use of a dummy
0:05:08 > 0:05:11and then CGI is going to put everything together.
0:05:11 > 0:05:14This is the dummy for the character of the Half-Face Man.
0:05:14 > 0:05:16It takes a couple of months to get to this
0:05:16 > 0:05:19because they need to take a life cast of the actor first
0:05:19 > 0:05:24and then the manufacturing of the mechanism.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27'Well, it looks creepy to me. Are you as freaked out as I am?'
0:05:27 > 0:05:32Probably not any more but maybe the first days, yes.
0:05:32 > 0:05:34'Well, while Half-Face Man is freaking us all out
0:05:34 > 0:05:37'with his scary eyeballs, our costume designer Howard
0:05:37 > 0:05:40'has had his own terrifying monster to deal with.
0:05:40 > 0:05:42'No, I don't mean the new Doctor!'
0:05:42 > 0:05:45I've had stress nightmare dreams for the past two days.
0:05:45 > 0:05:49'Yes, designing the latest costume for a brand-new Doctor isn't easy.
0:05:49 > 0:05:51'But it's over now. Phew.'
0:05:51 > 0:05:53Fantastic. A great relief.
0:05:53 > 0:05:56Peter said very early on after I met him, "You realise I'm going
0:05:56 > 0:05:59"to have to wear this for the rest of my life." No pressure.
0:05:59 > 0:06:04But I think he looks fantastic and he genuinely seems very happy.
0:06:04 > 0:06:06'And Peter isn't just happy with his new look.
0:06:06 > 0:06:09- 'He's over the moon.' - I love it!
0:06:09 > 0:06:14I love the way that it's very modern but at the same time it invokes
0:06:14 > 0:06:19the past and yet it also propels the new Doctor into the future.
0:06:19 > 0:06:23I'm the Doctor. I've lived for over 2,000 years.
0:06:23 > 0:06:25I love it! It's sharp, isn't it?
0:06:25 > 0:06:28It's sharp and it's minimalist and really cool.
0:06:28 > 0:06:29What do you think?
0:06:29 > 0:06:32I think Howard's done an amazing job. It's really great.
0:06:32 > 0:06:35Everyone will find something different in the look.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37It will have a sort of '60s feel for some,
0:06:37 > 0:06:39it will have an Edwardian feel for others.
0:06:39 > 0:06:43What I tried to do is not be stuck in any particular genre or period,
0:06:43 > 0:06:47that it was really just contemporary with a hint of something different.
0:06:47 > 0:06:51It wasn't deliberate but I think I always wanted something that
0:06:51 > 0:06:55was connected to the darker kind of tones of the earlier Doctors.
0:06:55 > 0:06:58- Yeah, yeah. - It's very kind of Jon Pertwee.
0:06:58 > 0:06:59LAUGHTER
0:06:59 > 0:07:01'Yes, Peter's new costume echoes back
0:07:01 > 0:07:03'to some of the past Doctors' outfits.
0:07:03 > 0:07:05'Time to see what style he has in common
0:07:05 > 0:07:07'with some of his predecessors.
0:07:08 > 0:07:12'If you look closely, you can see that the more sombre approach
0:07:12 > 0:07:14'of a long, dark coat was favoured by the first two Doctors,
0:07:14 > 0:07:16'but the red lining in the 12th Doctor's
0:07:16 > 0:07:19'has a touch of the 3rd about it.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22'And there's the simplicity that harks back to the 9th Doctor
0:07:22 > 0:07:25'including his passion for sturdy footwear.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28'The accessories so beloved of earlier incarnations -
0:07:28 > 0:07:32'scarves, hats, celery or umbrellas, - they're all gone.
0:07:32 > 0:07:36'This leaves us with a costume that's distinctive, new, striking
0:07:36 > 0:07:37'and stylish.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40'So what does Peter think of his new iconic costume?'
0:07:40 > 0:07:45It's stark. It means business and I believe it.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48It's the thing that most makes me feel most like Doctor Who.
0:07:48 > 0:07:52'So with a new costume and a new set of scripts, Peter has no excuse.
0:07:52 > 0:07:56'It's time for his first moments on camera.
0:07:56 > 0:07:58'And someone is more than a little chuffed.'
0:07:58 > 0:07:59It's rather exciting.
0:07:59 > 0:08:02Almost uniquely, Peter Capaldi's first scene in Doctor Who
0:08:02 > 0:08:05is the first time that Peter has popped out the TARDIS.
0:08:05 > 0:08:08'This was to bring out a raft of strong emotions for a man who
0:08:08 > 0:08:11'has loved Doctor Who ever since he was a young boy.'
0:08:11 > 0:08:13Delight mixed with terror, really.
0:08:13 > 0:08:18But to actually finally get to be Doctor Who was fantastic.
0:08:18 > 0:08:21To sort of emerge from the TARDIS for the first time,
0:08:21 > 0:08:24that's great, and you shut the door and it's completely black.
0:08:25 > 0:08:27You're sort of plunged into the darkness with just
0:08:27 > 0:08:31me, Jenna and the guy who's providing the smoke.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35So it was lovely to be inside that box
0:08:35 > 0:08:38and to think, "Oh, this is mine now."
0:08:39 > 0:08:42Bashful? Sneezy? Grumpy!
0:08:42 > 0:08:44'And being on set is a real treat for Steven.
0:08:44 > 0:08:47'After months of only seeing his new Doctor on paper,
0:08:47 > 0:08:50'it's time for the real character to come to life before his very eyes.'
0:08:50 > 0:08:53Already I'm seeing how he's choosing to move around the set,
0:08:53 > 0:08:56how he's hitting a funny line, how he's hitting a serious moment.
0:08:56 > 0:08:58The fundamental Doctor is the same.
0:08:58 > 0:09:00It's those flourishes, those moments,
0:09:00 > 0:09:04the things they run with, the way they move that makes them different,
0:09:04 > 0:09:06and he's such a funny, inventive actor.
0:09:06 > 0:09:09And, simultaneously, he's having an absolute ball
0:09:09 > 0:09:11because he's playing the part he's always wanted.
0:09:11 > 0:09:13- How do you know? - Oh, come on, Clara!
0:09:13 > 0:09:15You know that I speak dinosaur!
0:09:15 > 0:09:17He's not Clara. I'm Clara!
0:09:17 > 0:09:19It's been amazing.
0:09:19 > 0:09:21He was born to play it and I just remember there was a first line
0:09:21 > 0:09:24of one take and in my head I was like, "And off we go."
0:09:24 > 0:09:28Why are you all going dark and wobbly?
0:09:28 > 0:09:31Clara kind of felt a bit safer with the last Doctor.
0:09:31 > 0:09:34He would always catch her whenever she'd fall
0:09:34 > 0:09:37but with this Doctor, she doesn't quite know how far he's going to go.
0:09:37 > 0:09:40He's a bit more reckless. She's totally kind of on the back foot
0:09:40 > 0:09:45and doesn't quite know how to handle this new man with this new face.
0:09:45 > 0:09:47So we see a complete change in her.
0:09:47 > 0:09:49You need to calm down.
0:09:49 > 0:09:51She kind of has to try and keep in control
0:09:51 > 0:09:54and he doesn't make that easy and the situation doesn't make that easy
0:09:54 > 0:09:56so it's very different to how it was.
0:09:56 > 0:09:58Something's gone wrong.
0:09:58 > 0:10:00I'm not flirting, by the way... Wrong?
0:10:01 > 0:10:03What's gone wrong?
0:10:03 > 0:10:05His physicality, and his hands, and his run,
0:10:05 > 0:10:07just everything about him is the Doctor,
0:10:07 > 0:10:09and it's such a different Doctor.
0:10:09 > 0:10:12So that's been incredible to see him bring that Doctor to life
0:10:12 > 0:10:14and come together but it was there immediately.
0:10:14 > 0:10:17'We really do have an amazing new Doctor on our hands
0:10:17 > 0:10:20'and I wonder what Steven thinks of his new time-traveller.'
0:10:20 > 0:10:22He looks like Doctor Who, he sounds like Doctor Who,
0:10:22 > 0:10:25he's a Scottish Doctor Who and somehow that's just so exciting.
0:10:25 > 0:10:27Everybody just...
0:10:27 > 0:10:29Everybody just take five!
0:10:29 > 0:10:32'So that may be the end of Peter's first day,
0:10:32 > 0:10:37'but this is just the beginning of a brand-new Doctor.
