0:00:00 > 0:00:03'Listen - what a spooky episode!

0:00:03 > 0:00:05'This time we got to see the Doctor battle

0:00:05 > 0:00:09'against an invisible creature, travel to the end of the universe...'

0:00:09 > 0:00:10Help. Send the Doctor.

0:00:10 > 0:00:14'..and we even get a special glimpse into the Doctor's childhood.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17'Yes, this episode is guaranteed to scare you to the bone

0:00:17 > 0:00:20'and leave you in a state of shock.

0:00:20 > 0:00:24'So hold on tight - we're going to show you how we put it all together.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31'With such an eerie tone to this episode,

0:00:31 > 0:00:34'it really does manage to send shivers down your spine.'

0:00:34 > 0:00:37I've got hairs standing on end.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40'And it appears that this creepy episode actually came from

0:00:40 > 0:00:42'an innocent meeting with the executive producer.'

0:00:42 > 0:00:45Listen came about as a conversation between me

0:00:45 > 0:00:49and Brian Minchin talking about what can we do with sound in Doctor Who.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51BANGING CLARA: What's that?

0:00:51 > 0:00:54That just set off something in my head. Let's try and do a story

0:00:54 > 0:00:57that's just about what the Doctor thinks about a monster

0:00:57 > 0:01:00in which the monster never actually appears.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03'But how do you go about filming such a unique creature?'

0:01:03 > 0:01:06Steven Moffat told me that he had a very special creature

0:01:06 > 0:01:09lined up for me for this episode, one that you couldn't see or hear.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12I said, "So what are we going to film, then?"

0:01:12 > 0:01:13I think the trick is

0:01:13 > 0:01:16understanding that the creature is so special that we all have one.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19'So, with sound being so vital, the director Douglas worked closely

0:01:19 > 0:01:23'with the sound effects editor to create the sinister atmosphere.'

0:01:23 > 0:01:25If you can imagine, with Doctor Who, there's quite a few monsters

0:01:25 > 0:01:28and quite a few creatures that are quite self-evident

0:01:28 > 0:01:30within the episodes,

0:01:30 > 0:01:34but with Listen, a lot of it is to do with what's in your mind.

0:01:34 > 0:01:40For example, Douglas asked for a specific feeling for the scene

0:01:40 > 0:01:46when the Doctor and Clara are about to take Orson off the space station.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51You don't really know what's attacking them,

0:01:51 > 0:01:54whether it's an animal, whether it's a creature

0:01:54 > 0:01:56or whether it's actually just the space station

0:01:56 > 0:01:58going through its motions of the night.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01HISSING

0:02:01 > 0:02:05So when you get the steam hisses, as if the space station is cooling down,

0:02:05 > 0:02:07you also have animal noises underneath that

0:02:07 > 0:02:09the audience subconsciously hear

0:02:09 > 0:02:12and then you start to think, "There's something out there."

0:02:12 > 0:02:15'We caught up with Peter and Jenna at the read-through,

0:02:15 > 0:02:17'back in February 2014.'

0:02:17 > 0:02:18Sorry to keep you waiting.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20We were stuck down a tunnel, covered in gloop.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24'But what did the cast think about this creepy episode?'

0:02:24 > 0:02:27Often, Doctor Who becomes quite epic and big.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31"How could you know it existed? How would you detect it?"

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Listen was quieter and smaller, and almost like a ghost story.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37"What's that footstep following, never passing by?"

0:02:37 > 0:02:40There was a supernatural influence in it,

0:02:40 > 0:02:42which I always love in Doctor Who.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45'What will Clara be faced with in this story?'

0:02:45 > 0:02:47"So, the famous drink, at last."

0:02:47 > 0:02:48It's a bit more of a domestic episode.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51"Do you have any other way to make this more surreal

0:02:51 > 0:02:52"than it already is?!"

0:02:52 > 0:02:55We really see Clara leading a double life

0:02:55 > 0:02:58and how that is going to get out of control.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00- Where's your coat? - My...my what?

0:03:00 > 0:03:03It all goes completely wrong, and she's there trying to

0:03:03 > 0:03:07kind of keep everything together and totally calm.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09'Yes, only on Doctor Who would you have a spaceman

0:03:09 > 0:03:11'gate-crashing your first date.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13'Time to travel to the end of the universe

0:03:13 > 0:03:15'to meet this lonely astronaut, Orson.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21'He may be lost in space but he still loves his spaceman look.'

0:03:21 > 0:03:22To infinity...

0:03:22 > 0:03:25I'm like Tom Jones.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Or Soul Train. Remember that?

0:03:27 > 0:03:30'So, other than your nice new hairdo,

0:03:30 > 0:03:32'what's it like being a spaceman?'

0:03:32 > 0:03:34It's partly the reason I got into acting.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36I didn't have the scientific brain to really become a spaceman,

0:03:36 > 0:03:40so I'll act like one instead!

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Seriously, there was a time when I thought, "What a job, yeah."

0:03:43 > 0:03:46'OK, so if you were a spaceman, what planet would you visit?'

0:03:46 > 0:03:49Some of those moons on Jupiter seem pretty fun,

0:03:49 > 0:03:50but I think I'd go further afield.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52'Any resemblance to Danny Pink?'

0:03:52 > 0:03:56Who's Danny? He looks just like him, the spitting image of him.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58I mean, the DNA, the bloodline is strong.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00'And if you could travel back in time,

0:04:00 > 0:04:01'what would you tell your past self?'

0:04:01 > 0:04:04The lottery numbers from a nice, big rollover week,

0:04:04 > 0:04:10and that England won't win the World Cup any time soon.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13'Time to look around the spacecraft with our special tour guide.'

0:04:13 > 0:04:15Orson's spaceship.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17They wouldn't let me take a tumble-dryer with me -

0:04:17 > 0:04:19they said it weighed too much.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22So I have to do my washing myself and hang it up inside.

0:04:22 > 0:04:23Here's my garden.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26For obvious reasons, we can't have the garden outside.

0:04:26 > 0:04:30The kitchen. This is where Orson does his rice and peas, jerk chicken.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32It's all meals for one up here, I'm afraid.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34Down there is not for your eyes!

0:04:34 > 0:04:35HE CHUCKLES

0:04:35 > 0:04:38Front door. It probably should be closed.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41I've no idea why we're not getting sucked out into outer space.

0:04:41 > 0:04:42My hammock.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44If I can't get up there, I've got that,

0:04:44 > 0:04:46and this...

0:04:47 > 0:04:51..is where I watch TV and make my spaceship go.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54Bienvenido a mi casa. Casa de Orson.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56My spaceship.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58I've been stuck here for a while. Help.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00Send the Doctor. Please.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03'Lucky for Orson, the Doctor did turn up,

0:05:03 > 0:05:07'and he seems to be spending most of his time hanging about.'

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Hanging about!

0:05:09 > 0:05:10I've never done wire-work before,

0:05:10 > 0:05:12but I'm becoming quite an expert in it now

0:05:12 > 0:05:14because Doctor Who seems to demand a lot of it.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18It's great fun - you know, having an air lock suddenly open

0:05:18 > 0:05:19and everything being sucked out

0:05:19 > 0:05:22and you're having to hang on to the furniture in order to stay there.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Yeah, that's...like a childhood dream, isn't it?

0:05:25 > 0:05:29We've all done that. Except lying on a chair!

0:05:29 > 0:05:32'What did Samuel think about Peter's wire-work?'

0:05:32 > 0:05:34Yeah, he was hanging out like my washing.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36He did some brilliant wire-work actually.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38I'm hoping to get up on some of them myself soon.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40'Sounds like someone is a bit jealous.'

0:05:40 > 0:05:43No, not jealous, but, you know, I'll bide my time.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48'So, moving on from the excitement of wire-work on set,

0:05:48 > 0:05:51'in this episode we also got an unexpected surprise -

0:05:51 > 0:05:54'a very rare glimpse into the Doctor's life.'

0:05:54 > 0:05:57She ends up in the Doctor's childhood, mistakenly,

0:05:57 > 0:06:00and then sees him as a child, and speaks to him

0:06:00 > 0:06:04and tells him these words that she's already heard from the Doctor,

0:06:04 > 0:06:06so it's kind of one of these... We call it a Moffat loop.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09It's a Moffat loop that happens again.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11'And the Director, well, he was thrilled to be part

0:06:11 > 0:06:14'of such a significant moment in Doctor Who history.'

0:06:14 > 0:06:16When I realised that the little boy in the bed

0:06:16 > 0:06:21was actually the young Doctor, I had a shiver down my spine straightaway.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24Directing that moment, and knowing that Doctor Who fans everywhere

0:06:24 > 0:06:26are just going to be exploding with amazement

0:06:26 > 0:06:30that we've got the youngest Doctor ever on the show, that was my moment.

0:06:30 > 0:06:31'This was a rare glimpse,

0:06:31 > 0:06:33'because even though we've been travelling with the Doctor

0:06:33 > 0:06:34'for over 50 years now,

0:06:34 > 0:06:38'we still know surprisingly little about his early life.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42'We know he attended the Academy on Gallifrey,

0:06:42 > 0:06:44'where he had a least two tutors.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48'Borusa - this strict teacher would later become the schemer

0:06:48 > 0:06:50'in search of immortality and power.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54'Then we have Azmael, one of the Doctor's favourites,

0:06:54 > 0:06:58'who would ultimately sacrifice himself to stop the evil Mestor.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03'The Doctor, or Theta Sigma as he was informally known back then,

0:07:03 > 0:07:07'did graduate from the Academy, but not exactly with flying colours.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09'According to his old companion Romana,

0:07:09 > 0:07:13'he scraped through with 51%, on his second attempt.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15'Maybe he was distracted from his studies by his friends.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18'After all, they did include the Master.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20'After that, all we know is that

0:07:20 > 0:07:22'he got tired of watching the universe pass him by.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25'So, going against the strict policy of non-interference,

0:07:25 > 0:07:29'he stole a TARDIS and set off to travel throughout time and space.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34'As well as an insight into the young Doctor's life,

0:07:34 > 0:07:36'we also get to meet a young Danny Pink.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40'And this budding actor is incredibly excited to be part of the show.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43'So then, Remi, did you have any favourite scenes to be in?'

0:07:43 > 0:07:45The scene when I'm out of my window,

0:07:45 > 0:07:51and working with all the cameramen and all the actors.

0:07:51 > 0:07:52Yeah, it's really fun.

0:07:52 > 0:07:53'Getting such a big part,

0:07:53 > 0:07:55'did you manage to keep it a secret from friends?'

0:07:55 > 0:07:58I've told a few. Some of my friends don't believe me,

0:07:58 > 0:08:01so I want to shock them and say,

0:08:01 > 0:08:04"Well, it's not like I'm going to be on TV, is it? No."

0:08:04 > 0:08:06'What did Peter think about working with young Remi?'

0:08:06 > 0:08:09Yeah, Remi was great from day one, from the start,

0:08:09 > 0:08:12so that was wonderful - to know that right at the centre of it

0:08:12 > 0:08:15you had this wonderfully natural performance... Where is he?

0:08:15 > 0:08:17..and good fun. He was very good fun to have around.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19'Peter obviously enjoyed working with Remi,

0:08:19 > 0:08:22'but what did Remi think about working with Peter?'

0:08:22 > 0:08:23Are you scared?

0:08:23 > 0:08:26It's really fun just knowing that you're actually with the Doctor.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28It was really cool, cos it was actually my first job.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32I didn't know it was his first job. He didn't appear that way,

0:08:32 > 0:08:34but, no, he had a very natural quality about him,

0:08:34 > 0:08:37which is very valuable.

0:08:37 > 0:08:38The end.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41'Well, this little cheeky chap gets all the luck.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44In his later years, he'll even grow up to go on a date with Clara.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47'Jenna, give us the gossip. How was it?'

0:08:47 > 0:08:50It's terrible. It's really bad.

0:08:50 > 0:08:55She says stupid things because she's very, very nervous.

0:08:55 > 0:08:56When I'm nervous and I've got a mouth on me,

0:08:56 > 0:08:59seriously, it's got a mind of its own. I'm worried it wants to go solo.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01It's literally making me feel a little bit cringey now.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03SAMUEL: He's been a bit of a bumbling idiot so far.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05Why can't I talk today?

0:09:05 > 0:09:07You know when you really, really like someone

0:09:07 > 0:09:08and you don't want to mess it up,

0:09:08 > 0:09:10and you end up just messing it up by trying not to?

0:09:10 > 0:09:12I think there's an element of that.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14Thankfully, she has a bit of a heart and likes him anyway.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17He probably needs to learn just to say less.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19'Things didn't go that badly,

0:09:19 > 0:09:23'as Danny and Clara did finally have a kiss in this episode.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25'We caught up with Danny preparing for the big day.'

0:09:25 > 0:09:29Perks of the job. Got my chewing gum ready...and my mouth spray.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32'So, have you been practising?'

0:09:32 > 0:09:35Ha-ha! Ha-ha! Yeah, I've pra...

0:09:35 > 0:09:38I've drawn a little picture on here, practised like that.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42'Anyway, you must have been a little nervous?'

0:09:42 > 0:09:44No, I'm not nervous.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47As an actor, the first time I did it, I was petrified.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50It was worse than the first time doing it in real life.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52'So, will you tell us how the filming goes?'

0:09:52 > 0:09:56There'll be no kissing and telling. Mr Pink is a gentleman.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59'In this episode, Rupert is terrified of what's under his bed.'

0:09:59 > 0:10:04We caught up with the cast to find out what's under THEIR beds at home.'

0:10:04 > 0:10:05There's no monsters, as far as I know.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08Oh, it's just full of stuff. Shoes, boxes...

0:10:08 > 0:10:10Floor?

0:10:10 > 0:10:12I used to be scared of what was under the bed.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14Games you get at Christmas that you think it'll be a great idea to play,

0:10:14 > 0:10:16but you never get round to playing.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18There's a few stuff under there.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20I always had to be like completely in the quilt.

0:10:20 > 0:10:21If anything was out, I got scared.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24'Well, like Clara told the Doctor, there's NOTHING under the bed,

0:10:24 > 0:10:27'but it's OK to be afraid of it.'
