:00:00. > :00:00.ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, all that and much more on Sportsday
:00:00. > :00:20.at 6:30pm, but now on BBC News it is time for the film review.
:00:21. > :00:26.Hello and welcome to The Film Review here on BBC News. To take us through
:00:27. > :00:34.this week cinema releases is Anna Smith. We have Philomena. This stars
:00:35. > :00:41.Steve Coogan. We also have Judi Dench and from the director of the
:00:42. > :00:46.Queen, Stephen Frears. We also have an American indie comedy. About
:00:47. > :00:58.people who drink a little more than they should. And also Thor, and Thor
:00:59. > :01:05.wrings his hammer to London. Philomena has had a lot of ugly
:01:06. > :01:11.city. It has won awards. `` a lot of publicity. It is about Martin
:01:12. > :01:14.Sixsmith, a list who comes across an incredible true story of the woman
:01:15. > :01:19.who gave her child up or adoption. Or rather her child was taken away
:01:20. > :01:23.from her and she has kept the story secret for 50 years and was looking
:01:24. > :01:35.for him. They developed a friendship and discover an incredible story. I
:01:36. > :01:41.know this woman. She had a baby when she was a teenager and has kept this
:01:42. > :01:46.secret for 50 years. You are talking about a human interest story. I do
:01:47. > :01:59.not do those. Hello. You must be Philomena. Evil is a good word. I
:02:00. > :02:05.was going to ask if it would be possible to not use my real name?
:02:06. > :02:16.What about and Berlin? We have to use your real name. `` Anne Boleyn.
:02:17. > :02:21.I used to be a journalist. There are avenues we camped you in America. I
:02:22. > :02:30.am getting the royal treatment. I feel like the Pope.
:02:31. > :02:35.I am surprised at how many last there were in that little segment.
:02:36. > :02:41.The story itself is not very funny. It is a tragic story. What the film
:02:42. > :02:45.does which is very clever is get a unique balance between comedy and
:02:46. > :02:49.drama. You have flashbacks to her childhood and things are not
:02:50. > :02:53.pleasant, these girls were taken to give birth and then there are babies
:02:54. > :03:01.were taken away from them. But in the present you have these warm
:03:02. > :03:09.moments between them. It is a bit like Alan Partridge and his
:03:10. > :03:16.secretary. He is a journalist and she is excitable. It is funny and
:03:17. > :03:23.moving. It is already being tipped for several awards and these actors
:03:24. > :03:27.are difficult to criticise. I would say it would have perhaps been more
:03:28. > :03:31.authentic to have an Irish actress in the role but her accent is very
:03:32. > :03:38.good. Her comic ability is very good. She could well be up for an
:03:39. > :03:44.Oscar. Steve Coogan is not to everyone's taste but he is excellent
:03:45. > :03:54.in this. Yes. Perfectly cast. Let's go on to Drinking Buddies. Alcohol
:03:55. > :04:07.is in bold. Yes. The two of them work in a brewery. `` alcohol is
:04:08. > :04:11.involved. They go away for a weekend with their partners and pensions
:04:12. > :04:17.come to the fore. It says like traditional romantic comedy but what
:04:18. > :04:24.I liked about it is is a bit more athletic. You do not know who is
:04:25. > :04:33.supposed to be with you. It is quite authentic. The cast do you really
:04:34. > :04:38.good job. My view of some romantic comedies is that the romance does
:04:39. > :04:44.not work and the comedy is not funny enough. This is funny. It is also
:04:45. > :04:48.dramatic. It is about observer in relationships and people and it is
:04:49. > :04:54.quite thought`provoking. Our people meant to be for one another? Some
:04:55. > :04:58.people think we have an interesting attitude to alcohol but it is true
:04:59. > :05:04.in the United States. Is this a kind of Hangover type film? I think it is
:05:05. > :05:15.a type of film that British people will get on with better than
:05:16. > :05:19.Americans. It looks into the downsides of alcohol, of course, but
:05:20. > :05:33.it is not a traditional romantic comedy. Now, Thor two, what about
:05:34. > :05:39.that? There is a new villain who is threatening Thor and the rest of the
:05:40. > :05:55.role. Thor plunges back to earth and London. Jane. Sorry. I just needed
:05:56. > :06:03.to make sure you were real. It has been a strange day. Where were you?
:06:04. > :06:07.Where were you? I was right here where you left me. I was waiting and
:06:08. > :06:16.then I was crying and I went looking for you. You said you're coming
:06:17. > :06:20.back. I know. But wars were raging. Marauders were pillaging. I had to
:06:21. > :06:25.put an end to the slaughter. As excuses go, it is not terrible. But
:06:26. > :06:30.I saw you on television. You were in New York! I fought to protect you
:06:31. > :06:39.from the dangers of my world but I was a fool. I believe fate brought
:06:40. > :06:47.us together. One of those really rubbish lines.
:06:48. > :06:53.Does he look good for the rest of the movie? Yes. This film has a
:06:54. > :06:56.sense of how ridiculous it is. There is a lot of mystical mumbo jumbo
:06:57. > :07:04.that is absurd but it stops to laugh at itself. There is even a running
:07:05. > :07:08.joke about someone running naked around Stonehenge. There is a lot of
:07:09. > :07:18.apples. The formula goes a little bit like that. `` there is a lot of
:07:19. > :07:23.battles. It kind of works. The audience 's for this tend to be
:07:24. > :07:30.teenage boys? Yes. And maybe twentysomethings as well. A bit of
:07:31. > :07:35.popcorn fun. Nothing to charging. Not taking yourself too seriously.
:07:36. > :07:40.That sometimes works for certain audiences but sometimes teenage boys
:07:41. > :07:44.want something different. Yes. Anthony Hopkins is on hand to
:07:45. > :07:53.deliver the mythical codswallop sufficiently. I prefer it personally
:07:54. > :08:00.to the likes of Man of Steel because they do not add it how absurd they
:08:01. > :08:06.are. The Selfish Giant is your favourite of the week. Yes. Amazing
:08:07. > :08:09.film. This is the story of two boys who are sort of searching for scrap
:08:10. > :08:13.metal, they have been excluded from school. It is about the
:08:14. > :08:16.relationships and much more. The two boys are fantastic and it is one of
:08:17. > :08:24.those films I felt is like a future classic. It is based on a past
:08:25. > :08:29.classic. It is Oscar Wilde story about the selfish giant who has a
:08:30. > :08:35.garden but he will not let children in, so the guarding cannot thrive.
:08:36. > :08:45.You can read that in many different ways. `` the guarding cannot thrive.
:08:46. > :08:50.`` the garden. Yes. It is a ported two characters who could be any age.
:08:51. > :09:00.This Machiavellian boy and his soft`hearted sidekick it has been
:09:01. > :09:12.compared to Kes. Yes. High praise. Now, your DVD. It is about the
:09:13. > :09:17.fashion editor of Vogue in Paris. She strikes out on her own. It is a
:09:18. > :09:20.documentary about her trying to do her magazine so it is one for
:09:21. > :09:25.fashion fans but it has loads of behind`the`scenes access, her
:09:26. > :09:36.fashion so is `` her fashion shows. It is quite funny even if you are
:09:37. > :09:43.not into fashion. It is a little bit sycophantic. But at the same time,
:09:44. > :09:45.you watch it back and go, really? They are pushing harder and harder
:09:46. > :09:51.to push the envelope and she is obsessed with babies. There has to
:09:52. > :10:00.be a baby in every fashion shoot. Are the atoll self`aware?
:10:01. > :10:04.Self`awareness was not one of the strong suits of many of the people
:10:05. > :10:12.in previous fashion films. That is true. The limousines, the first
:10:13. > :10:18.class, the champagne, you could not get further away from The Selfish
:10:19. > :10:25.Giant. Mark Kermode will be back with us for The Film Review next
:10:26. > :10:37.week. BBC Radio five Live's competition closes next Friday. The
:10:38. > :10:42.winner of the short film competition will be judged by Mark Elmwood and

:11:15. > :11:20.There will be plenty of those wet November nights that Gavin made
:11:21. > :11:23.reference to over the coming week. Further spells of rain and strong
:11:24. > :11:26.winds tonight, the rain as you can see on the radar is mostly focused
:11:27. > :11:29.towards Lincolnshire, North Midlands, Wales with some rain
