:00:26. > :00:31.Review. To take us through this week's releases is Anna Smith. What

:00:31. > :00:37.have we got? Three hotly anticipated releases, the first from the

:00:37. > :00:40.director of Bridesmaids. It's a buddy cop comedy called The Heat. We

:00:41. > :00:46.have Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy as a couple of mismatched

:00:47. > :00:53.cops. The only film is Only God Forgives. By contrast this is a

:00:53. > :00:58.sombre affair. It's from Nicholas Winding Refn. Ryan Gosling is in

:00:58. > :01:01.this one as part of the underworld in Bangkok. And Red 2, Bruce Willis

:01:01. > :01:08.back in the game with Helen Mirren and new faces as well in the comedy

:01:08. > :01:13.caper. I notice that the Heaton was ridge

:01:13. > :01:18.fally called untitled female buddy fally called untitled female buddy

:01:18. > :01:22.cop movie, which sums it up. Yes the hook is it's two women, we've so

:01:22. > :01:28.rarely seen this. Sandra Bullock plays a New York FBI agent, very

:01:28. > :01:31.uptight, very buttoned up and rule observing. Melissa McCarthy is this

:01:31. > :01:41.Boston cop. It's her local home. She runs around the streets cleaning

:01:41. > :01:44.

:01:44. > :01:48.them up her own way. They do things How long is this going to take? I

:01:48. > :01:54.don't know maybe 12 hours, hope flip less. I have to find out what drives

:01:54. > :01:58.him. We could beat him with the phone book. No. It is crucial that

:01:58. > :02:02.you remain patient. It's crucial that you stop wearing that stupid

:02:02. > :02:08.barette. What is the problem with this? You have one on your head.

:02:08. > :02:11.top of my head like a normal person. What is the difference? Move on.If

:02:11. > :02:15.you go in the room you could break the bond we've created. Trust me on

:02:15. > :02:25.this one. Do you understand how important this is? Yeah I do.You

:02:25. > :02:25.

:02:26. > :02:33.will be patient? I will.OK. All right.

:02:33. > :02:37.Hello. Coffee? I drink a little more coffee than I probably should.

:02:37. > :02:44.I laughed and I laughed throughout that. It's very funny. It is very

:02:44. > :02:49.funny. Melissa McCarthy is so hilarious. She has a talent for

:02:49. > :02:53.improvisation. She did that in Bridesmaids. She did a sarcastic

:02:53. > :02:57.bulldog impression and wonderful contrast with Sandra Bullock's

:02:57. > :03:02.uptight agent. It is really funny. The main problem is the plot, which

:03:02. > :03:05.is negligible. It's a Scooby Doo style. The writers aren't interested

:03:05. > :03:10.in the story, something about tracking down a drug dealer. Does it

:03:10. > :03:14.really matter when it's too funny? It probably doesn't. If you look at

:03:14. > :03:17.the first of the Hangover films and so on, you either laugh your way

:03:17. > :03:22.through it or Bridesmaids or you don't. At least Bridesmaids there

:03:22. > :03:26.say point to it. Yeah, Bridesmaids was probably a stronger film theme

:03:26. > :03:30.atically and emotionally. This has a sweet emotional payoff. Like many

:03:30. > :03:34.buddy movies, they start off hating each other and they warm to each

:03:34. > :03:39.other. Of the things is it's a bit of a cliche, but it's not a cliche

:03:39. > :03:44.with women. I've never seen one. That's the refreshing thing. We

:03:44. > :03:49.haven't seen this dynamic before. We saw it briefly in Miss Congeniality

:03:49. > :03:55.2 and she was paired with a female agent there. Normally it's men

:03:55. > :04:00.though. It brutes up other ideas like gender -- brings up other ideas

:04:00. > :04:04.like gender equality in the work place. Drive I thought was a

:04:04. > :04:10.terrific movie, Ryan Gosling was terrific. I'm looking forward it

:04:10. > :04:14.Only God Forgives. You may not be after we talk about it. I agree I

:04:14. > :04:20.loved Drive. Refn is a great director. He's written this on his

:04:20. > :04:25.own. It's very experimental, nothing against that, I've enjoyed many

:04:25. > :04:30.slow, pond Russ films like Enter the Void. But Ryan Gosling plays a crim

:04:30. > :04:36.nap who has to settle a score. He comes up against an angel of

:04:36. > :04:42.vengeance who is a vigilante cop. There's very little dialogue, and

:04:42. > :04:47.then suddenly, extreme violence. This almost fetishises violence and

:04:47. > :04:51.then asks for forgiveness. I couldn't forgive the tedium. Just

:04:51. > :04:55.relentless? And also, point is that you don't get to know the

:04:55. > :04:59.characters. They're very broad brush strokes. Because there's so little

:04:59. > :05:05.dialogue and Gosling chooses to give nothing away in his face at all in

:05:06. > :05:12.this film. He's a great actor but he looks mood moody without. We have

:05:12. > :05:19.Kristin Scott Thomas his brassy mother, that's briefly entertaining.

:05:19. > :05:24.This doesn't have the humour that Tarantino would have. It's a little

:05:24. > :05:30.solemn. Red 2, two views of this. I bumped into somebody who said "Why

:05:30. > :05:35.did they even make Red 1". I kind of laughed at Red 1. It's three star

:05:35. > :05:41.out of five fun. I don't see why they needed a sequel. But apparently

:05:41. > :05:46.they're making a third as well. This movive sees them coming out of

:05:46. > :05:56.retirement. Bruce Willis's character finds out that he's implicated in a

:05:56. > :06:02.nuclear plot, wrongly of course, but there's a hit out on him.

:06:02. > :06:06.Yeah. MI6 has given me a contract to kill you. Apparently you're guilty

:06:06. > :06:10.of nuclear terrorism, murder and you're number one on Interpol's most

:06:10. > :06:15.wanted. Did you say?I said yes, the money's good and if I don't do it,

:06:15. > :06:21.somebody else will. It's bad, isn't it? Is that Marvin?Yes, and Sarah.

:06:21. > :06:26.Send them my love, won't you. gave her a gun. Was it loaded?Yes,

:06:26. > :06:31.yes. Are you being controlling? No. You have to take chances in a

:06:31. > :06:36.relationship. You have to be supportive. I don't need her to fit

:06:37. > :06:41.in. I need her to be safe. Just rent Dirty Dancing and tell her you love

:06:41. > :06:45.her. It's important to enjoy life while you still can. I thought that

:06:45. > :06:48.was very engaging. There are probably four or five scenes like

:06:48. > :06:53.that which are very funny. The rest, not so much. There's a lot of action

:06:53. > :06:57.and the action is kind of, there's always that breezy light tone and

:06:57. > :07:01.bodies flying everywhere, which sits slightly oddly with that tone.

:07:01. > :07:05.Mary-Louise Parker is great fun. And John Malkovich who is great. Anthony

:07:06. > :07:09.Hopkins comes in and he brightens the screen up. But it just plodded a

:07:09. > :07:14.little. It wasn't as solid as the first film. It wasn't as funny as

:07:14. > :07:18.the first. Really, not as good as the first? I thought, I enjoyed the

:07:18. > :07:23.first film. Perfectly nice. But I did think when I was watching it,

:07:23. > :07:30.you know, this could be oceans 11, but it's not. Not sharp enough. It

:07:30. > :07:33.has a great cast, not slight slightly - Helen Mirren is terrific

:07:33. > :07:38.and terrific in the first one, but it doesn't quite carry it off.

:07:38. > :07:48.is the same, if not slightly worse. Give that a miss. Your best of the

:07:48. > :07:51.week? Let's move on to that. I've seen Wadjda, a Saudi film. Yes, the

:07:51. > :07:55.first female film director from Saudi Arabia. It's about a girl who

:07:55. > :07:59.wants to have a bike, which is very frowned upon for girls there. It's

:07:59. > :08:05.about her journey of discovery, coming into adulthood and really

:08:05. > :08:09.discovering what kind of repression is existing in her own world. It's

:08:09. > :08:14.not tub thumping feminism, but it's about her personal search for

:08:14. > :08:20.equality which has wider implications. I found watching it, I

:08:20. > :08:23.learned more about the human face of what happens in Saudi Arabia than in

:08:23. > :08:28.any newspaper or TV programme, you understand it through the eyes of a

:08:28. > :08:32.child in the way that Oliver Twist tells you about London. You get. It

:08:32. > :08:37.She's learning and we are learning with her. It's a lovely slice of

:08:37. > :08:42.life films that you feel you're immersed in that culture. I agree.

:08:42. > :08:49.And the men are peripheral. It's what women do to women in enforcing

:08:49. > :08:53.the stereotypes. Very much so.Your DVD is The Paperboy. It's not

:08:53. > :09:01.necessarily the Best Film, but if you didn't see it in the sin mew,

:09:01. > :09:08.get it on DVD. It's a torrid crime thriller about erotic obsession. You

:09:08. > :09:13.have Nicole Kidman fixated on John Cusac's character. It's a great

:09:13. > :09:18.cast. It's a film you would be talking to with friends afterwards.

:09:18. > :09:22.A review which said it's a plain bonkers thriller. That means you

:09:22. > :09:26.would disagree about it. A reminder before we go that you'll find more
