:00:33. > :00:38.It certainly is a funny week. We have Valerian And The City Of A

:00:39. > :00:44.Thousand Planets, a mega budget sci-fi from Luc Besson starring Dane

:00:45. > :00:49.Dehaan and Cara Delevingne. England is mind takes a look at the early

:00:50. > :00:54.years of Manchester's answer to Oscar Wilde, Smiths front man

:00:55. > :00:57.Maurice E. And to quote the man himself, panic on the streets of

:00:58. > :01:02.London, panic on the streets of Birmingham. Yes, The Emoji Movie has

:01:03. > :01:11.been let loose onto an unsuspecting British public. Be afraid! O, Lord.

:01:12. > :01:17.That start with sci-fi. That is an odd week. It is August. I read that

:01:18. > :01:22.Valerian is possibly the most expensive French film ever? Most

:01:23. > :01:25.expensive European film of all time. Actually, 20 years ago, there was a

:01:26. > :01:30.film called The Fifth Element which Luc Besson, the same director, made

:01:31. > :01:34.which did well. At that point, that was the most expensive European film

:01:35. > :01:38.of all time. Now it is Valerian, with a budget of 200 million

:01:39. > :01:44.dollars, which could not buy Neymar, but it is still a lot of money. It

:01:45. > :01:47.is that in the 20th century. It is about a couple of intergalactic

:01:48. > :01:52.secret agents who are investigating strange goings-on at the office

:01:53. > :01:55.space station. Cara Delevingne and Dane Dehaan start. Let's see.

:01:56. > :02:40.You said you wanted the shortest way.

:02:41. > :02:47.Wow. Would I be right in saying you can see the money? You can see the

:02:48. > :02:51.money. But watching it, I just thought how much has changed in the

:02:52. > :02:55.20 years since The Fifth Element. The sci-fi and space movies we have

:02:56. > :02:58.had from people like Christopher Nolan and JJ Abrams with his Star

:02:59. > :03:02.Trek and Star Wars movies, and Alfonso Cuaron and actually,

:03:03. > :03:06.Valerian looks expensive, but it looks like an expensive 90s movie. I

:03:07. > :03:11.don't think it looks as elegant and as chic and certainly not as

:03:12. > :03:17.readable as the more recent science fiction films we have seen. It

:03:18. > :03:21.actually looks a bit gaudy. We saw it towards the end of that clip. It

:03:22. > :03:27.looks quite gaudy and camp and dare I say it, quite silly at times. You

:03:28. > :03:30.are allowed to say that. 20 years ago, there was a silliness about The

:03:31. > :03:35.Fifth Element, but we were more forgiving. But a lot has changed in

:03:36. > :03:40.that 20 years, so now I am not so sure that Luc Besson's style, and he

:03:41. > :03:46.does have a distinctive style, feels so of the moment as it did then. And

:03:47. > :03:51.what do you make of Cara Delevingne? Everyone wants to know that. Well,

:03:52. > :03:56.she's clearly very comfortable in front of a screen. She is arguably

:03:57. > :04:00.the world's most famous model, so she looks completely at home. Is

:04:01. > :04:04.she, on the evidence of this movie, the new Meryl Streep? I think so.

:04:05. > :04:08.However, she's very young and there is plenty of time for her to

:04:09. > :04:12.improve. I think the leaves are not the most charismatic. If you see the

:04:13. > :04:16.trailer, you will see Rihanna in the trailer a lot. She's not in the

:04:17. > :04:20.movie that much. That is a bit of a cheat on the part of the marketing.

:04:21. > :04:24.Would have liked to have seen her in it more and Ethan Hawke in it more.

:04:25. > :04:27.They are very much supporting characters. Is it just looked really

:04:28. > :04:34.good, I would have forgiven it these problems. All right. We couldn't

:04:35. > :04:41.have anything more different for our second film, England Is Mine. This

:04:42. > :04:44.is a biopic of Maurice E's -- Liszt's early years in the run up to

:04:45. > :04:50.him meeting Johnny Marr and forming the Smiths. The title is from a

:04:51. > :04:57.Smiths song, still ill. It stars Jack Lowden, who is in Dunkirk as

:04:58. > :05:01.well. He plays an RAF pilot. He is Tom Hardy's colleague in that movie.

:05:02. > :05:06.Very good in Dunkirk and very good in this as a young Morrissey. The

:05:07. > :05:10.downside is that the first half of the film, Morrissey is so painfully

:05:11. > :05:17.shy as a teenager that he is virtually mute. So you have a film

:05:18. > :05:21.where you don't know what is going on in his head because he is such an

:05:22. > :05:27.insular character. And the film is about him coming out of his shell.

:05:28. > :05:30.Most interestingly, the women in his life encouraging him to come out of

:05:31. > :05:35.his shell, his family and female friends. Do you need to be a fan of

:05:36. > :05:43.the Smiths to enjoy it or could this be a coming-of-age film? That is

:05:44. > :05:46.certainly what it's trying to be. It is -- there are Adrian

:05:47. > :05:50.Moleesque-macro elements of it with the nerdy, shy teenager, but also

:05:51. > :05:54.about if you follow your dreams, they will come true, which perhaps

:05:55. > :05:58.is always what you think of when thinking of Morrissey, but it is

:05:59. > :06:01.there in the movie. The second half is better. That is when he does come

:06:02. > :06:07.out of his shell and becomes more flamboyant. OK. It's August,

:06:08. > :06:11.children are not at school. You take them to the cinema a lot. In

:06:12. > :06:15.watching the trailer for The Emoji Movie made my eyes hurt. Do you

:06:16. > :06:21.think Morrissey has ever used and emoji? I doubt it, somehow. Yeah. In

:06:22. > :06:25.terms of plot, The Emoji Movie is very convoluted. You can sum it up

:06:26. > :06:30.very simply. It is trying to be the Lego movie, desperately, which was a

:06:31. > :06:34.couple of years ago and a huge success critically and commercially.

:06:35. > :06:38.It is about this emoji living in a phone in this emoji city which is

:06:39. > :06:42.very uniform and regimented, but he is different. He wants to prove he

:06:43. > :06:50.is different to everyone else and special and doesn't follow the herd.

:06:51. > :06:54.There is actually a meh frets, indifferent, the feeling I had when

:06:55. > :06:58.coming out of Valerian. So he is a meh face, but he wants to be more

:06:59. > :07:03.than that. In this clip, we have, I can't believe I am saying this, Sir

:07:04. > :07:06.Patrick Stewart voicing a poop emoji and James Corden voicing a high five

:07:07. > :07:09.emoji. Let's hear that. Come on, tell me you aren't just

:07:10. > :07:20.a little bit tempted. Come on, man, it's Hi-5.

:07:21. > :07:25.You know me, I'm a favourite. I mean, look at me, I'm

:07:26. > :07:30.an attractive hand Fist Bump!

:07:31. > :07:33.Come on in. Fist Bump?

:07:34. > :07:35.He's a knucklehead, literally! Look at him.

:07:36. > :07:51.I can look like that. OK, I get it. What age-group do you

:07:52. > :07:54.think this is aimed at? I would say young and in discriminating. Maybe a

:07:55. > :08:01.first film when you haven't seen anything else. If it were funny, we

:08:02. > :08:06.would forgive it and of course, the Lego movie was very funny. Pixar

:08:07. > :08:11.make funny animations. The level of muddy in animations is very high.

:08:12. > :08:15.But I have read a lot about the cynical nature of it and the product

:08:16. > :08:18.placement. Because it is not funny, you are looking at the downside,

:08:19. > :08:22.which is that it feels very corporate. Even though it is

:08:23. > :08:28.supposedly about and emoji he was to be an individual a bit different,

:08:29. > :08:32.actually, what it is selling you are very corporate and mainstream apps

:08:33. > :08:36.and games. So it does feel a bit like an advert as they run around

:08:37. > :08:40.this phone and went a different apps and games. Trying to get them young.

:08:41. > :08:47.Better children's films are available this summer. I would say

:08:48. > :08:50.so. Best out at the moment, The Big Sick? Doing very well at the box

:08:51. > :08:55.office, so that is good to see. A romantic comedy about an interracial

:08:56. > :09:00.relationship. It is also literally about a girlfriend in a coma,

:09:01. > :09:05.speaking of the Smiths. The lead female character gets very ill, and

:09:06. > :09:09.it is written by Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon. It is their story, the

:09:10. > :09:12.story of how they got together. So even though it is dealing with big

:09:13. > :09:17.topics, it feels very personal and charming. They are happy to tip

:09:18. > :09:21.their hat to Richard Curtis and Judd Apatow, who produced the film. I

:09:22. > :09:28.like romantic comedies when they are done well. We are often down on them

:09:29. > :09:32.as a genre, but when done well, they are charming. I am pleased that the

:09:33. > :09:36.man and Gianni and Emily Gordon are celebrating how good romantic

:09:37. > :09:43.comedies can be. If you want to sit on the sofa instead, what is your

:09:44. > :09:49.recommendation? Free Fire, from Ben Wheatley, co-written with his

:09:50. > :09:52.regular partner. He works across different genres, comedy and crime

:09:53. > :09:56.and dystopian sci-fi, but in all of his movies, there is this great

:09:57. > :10:01.feeling that things are about to go pear shaped. Things are about to

:10:02. > :10:04.kick off, literally in this film, because it is about a meeting in the

:10:05. > :10:10.70s in this warehouse in Boston that goes wrong. It is a meeting between

:10:11. > :10:14.gangsters and arms dealers, and it is very tense and nerve-wracking and

:10:15. > :10:19.under Free Fire of the title kicks in. It is not just a shooter 'em up,

:10:20. > :10:31.though. There are great actors in this. Brie Larson, Gillian Murphy --

:10:32. > :10:34.Cillian Murphy. It harks back to gutsy 70s action films. Martin

:10:35. > :10:38.Scorsese is the executive producer of this film and it does have that

:10:39. > :10:41.dirty feel about it that we had in the 70s. James, thanks very much.
