:00:00. > :00:00.the Olympic old muddle. We will have the latest tennis from
:00:07. > :00:09.the ATP world finals in London. `` gold medal. Now it is time for
:00:10. > :00:26.Film Review. Hello and welcome to Film Review on
:00:27. > :00:36.BBC News. To take us through this week is Mark Kermode. What have we
:00:37. > :00:39.got? We have Gravity where Sandra Bullock and George Clooney get lost
:00:40. > :00:47.in space. We have how to survive a play, about how many people took
:00:48. > :00:54.their destinies into their own hands. And we have Seduced And
:00:55. > :01:02.Abandoned which is supposed to be a look at the movie business. Gravity,
:01:03. > :01:06.I want to see this. We have talked about this before. At the London
:01:07. > :01:14.film Festival we were talking about it in the rain. Everybody pretty
:01:15. > :01:20.much knows what the setup is. The director is the one who made the
:01:21. > :01:26.best Harry Potter film. George Clooney and Sandra Bullock are out
:01:27. > :01:30.in space when they receive news and avalanche of space debris is heading
:01:31. > :01:34.their way. The next thing you know, they are essentially knocked out
:01:35. > :01:40.into space. The rest of the film is a story of how two people flying
:01:41. > :01:47.around in space can or cannot find their way back home. Here is a clip.
:01:48. > :01:58.Wait. The tank is empty. We are going to hit hard. Grab anything you
:01:59. > :03:01.can. What do I do? ! What do I do? ! This is amazing. You have to imagine
:03:02. > :03:09.that on the biggest screen you can find. Also... You are going to save
:03:10. > :03:16.the 3`D thing. You will we cant be helped career of rubbishing 3`D. It
:03:17. > :03:20.is an exceptional film inasmuch as I would recommend you see it in 3`D.
:03:21. > :03:24.It is the only case I have seen in which I ain't the 3`D is so
:03:25. > :03:31.intrinsic to the story, intrinsic to the design. The film is beautifully
:03:32. > :03:35.lit and I had less problem with the light lost you get from 3`D glasses.
:03:36. > :03:39.A lot of it is surrounded by the abyss of space. The characters
:03:40. > :03:45.floating in the middle of the screen overcomes the problem is of 3`D
:03:46. > :03:50.breaking the edge of the frame. But it is kind of a fairground ride of a
:03:51. > :03:57.film. I don't mean that in a bad way. This is a film that wants to
:03:58. > :04:04.visually engulf you, overwhelm you, spin you around and leave you
:04:05. > :04:09.completely discombobulated. The way it does it best is on a massive
:04:10. > :04:14.screen. It hurts me to say this, and in 3`D. The way the visuals have
:04:15. > :04:17.been done is extraordinary. It disintegrates the boundary of what
:04:18. > :04:29.you think of as animation and what you think of as live action. The
:04:30. > :04:35.interesting thing is, it is a popcorn movie, it is 91 minutes
:04:36. > :04:41.long. When was the last time you saw a science`fiction film that was 91
:04:42. > :04:49.minutes long. It is 91 minutes, do the thing and then out. A lot of the
:04:50. > :04:54.dialogue is very generic, and I really enjoyed it. It is one of
:04:55. > :05:00.those things you have two C in the biggest, loudest possible way. And
:05:01. > :05:11.for once, and for once only, in 3`D. Now you are not going to talk. How
:05:12. > :05:20.To Survive A Plague is cultural story? It is a documentary type
:05:21. > :05:27.film. They got together a coalition of people, they came together to
:05:28. > :05:30.have some kind of organisation when the government and the health bodies
:05:31. > :05:37.were failing to deal with the emerging AIDS crisis. One of the
:05:38. > :05:42.things that is most extraordinary is it is done from 700 hours of
:05:43. > :05:46.footage. You hear from people who did the most incredible things in
:05:47. > :05:51.terms of organising disparate groups, firstly to draw attention to
:05:52. > :05:57.the situation but then develop a level of organisation that both the
:05:58. > :06:01.government and the pharmaceutical companies would say, they know
:06:02. > :06:06.better than us, they know how to deal with this. It is very moving.
:06:07. > :06:13.It is very, very powerful. It is often heartbreaking and sad. But it
:06:14. > :06:17.is ultimately uplifting and it is a call to arms and an indication of
:06:18. > :06:19.what can happen when desperate groups of people in bleak
:06:20. > :06:24.circumstances come together and say, how can we make this situation
:06:25. > :06:43.better? They change their world. They do. This is a mock
:06:44. > :06:52.documentary, to raise money for a film which will take Last Tango In
:06:53. > :07:07.Paris to Iraq. Here is a clip. The reason I wanted to do this film
:07:08. > :07:15.is because the movie industry has changed. I don't know how much
:07:16. > :07:17.longer it can go in the age of this technology. It is splintering the
:07:18. > :07:34.audience. You go back to recreate this
:07:35. > :07:50.experience. You go back with another chance to do something you want to
:07:51. > :07:56.do in film`making. You will watch Seduced And Abandoned over and over
:07:57. > :08:02.again. He goes to the Cannes film Festival and discovers it is glitzy.
:08:03. > :08:06.Yes, we already know that. But then they discover when it comes to
:08:07. > :08:11.films, art is secondary to money. Yes, we know that. You see them
:08:12. > :08:22.raising money for the film. Remember the film, The Greatest Movie Ever
:08:23. > :08:27.Sold and that did this story much better, much funnier and with much
:08:28. > :08:31.more point. This one suffered from a level of indulgence. It was very
:08:32. > :08:39.pleased with itself and it thought you would be pleased to spend time
:08:40. > :08:55.with these people. It is a lot less smart and funny than it thinks it
:08:56. > :09:02.is. The good news is, The Selfish Giant is brilliant? It is brilliant.
:09:03. > :09:14.It is inspired by the Oscar Wilde story to some extent, but also Kes.
:09:15. > :09:20.It is heartbreaking, it is beautifully played. She is a
:09:21. > :09:23.wonderful director. I want as many people as possible to go and see
:09:24. > :09:31.it. It is worth getting excited about. It also engages in one of our
:09:32. > :09:41.problems as society, which is asserting kids don't fit in. The
:09:42. > :09:45.story is, The Selfish Giant wants to keep the kids out of his garden, but
:09:46. > :09:52.what he does not realise is if the kids don't have anywhere to play,
:09:53. > :09:55.the garden will wither and die. Of these kids are sidelined by society
:09:56. > :10:12.and it is wonderful, and you should see it. Your DVD is The Great
:10:13. > :10:17.Gatsby? It is a film adaptation. I was not sold by the 3`D on this for
:10:18. > :10:22.example. If you see it in the cinema, 2`D is better. But they have
:10:23. > :10:26.taken a look at it which I think will capture the imagination of
:10:27. > :10:32.younger audiences. Anything that rings audiences back to that novel
:10:33. > :10:43.is wonderful. It is a bit like having the book shouted at you. The
:10:44. > :10:51.Great Gatsby 2013 is not about paying? This is a good, sincere and
:10:52. > :10:51.solid attempt. That is it that this week.
:10:52. > :11:10.Thanks for watching. It has been a busy day of whether
:11:11. > :11:13.and we will keep you updated on the latest of the Typhoon as it heads
:11:14. > :11:14.towards Vietnam. Back home you will
