:00:00. > 3:59:59marches on in Madrid. That's Sportsday at 6. 30. Now it's time

:00:00. > :00:22.for the Film Re`view. Hello. Welcome to the Film Review.

:00:23. > :00:27.To take us through the cinema releases, Mark Kermode. It's a very

:00:28. > :00:35.good week, Frank, a film inspired by but not based on the character of

:00:36. > :00:38.Frank Sidebottom. We have Next Goal Wins, the football team who tries to

:00:39. > :00:45.drag themselves up from the bottom of the world league. And we have The

:00:46. > :00:51.Wind Rises, which we are assured is the final film from Hayao Miyazaki.

:00:52. > :00:59.Frank with Michael Fassbender with a mask. Basically, this is inspired by

:01:00. > :01:05.Jon Ronson's memoir of his time playing key board in Frank

:01:06. > :01:09.Sidebottom's band. He used to wear a head and do come dip songs. Jon

:01:10. > :01:14.Ronson wrote an article about this. This has been turned into a

:01:15. > :01:20.fictional film and the character played by Domhnall Gleeson wants to

:01:21. > :01:25.be a pop star. Led by his character, called Frank, who has an American

:01:26. > :01:29.accent and is probably closer in character to Daniel Johnson and they

:01:30. > :01:33.ask him to join the band. The next thing he finds himself with the band

:01:34. > :01:37.for a year whiems they rehearse and record their new album. During this

:01:38. > :01:41.whole period never once does Frank, played by Fassbender farction take

:01:42. > :01:50.off the head. `` Michael Fassbender, take off the head. Can I ask you

:01:51. > :02:01.something? Sure. Why do you wear that? You think it's weird? Kind of.

:02:02. > :02:09.Normal faces are weird too, so, the way they're smooth, smooth, smooth

:02:10. > :02:14.and then, bleurgh all bumpy and holes. What are eyes, like a science

:02:15. > :02:19.fiction movie. Don't get me started on lips. Like the edges of a very

:02:20. > :02:24.seriousserious wound. True. Your head is still sort of intimidating.

:02:25. > :02:28.Underneath that I'm giving you a welcoming smile. Would it help if I

:02:29. > :02:34.said my facial expressions outloud? Well, maybe. Welcoming smile.

:02:35. > :02:39.Delighted look. I giggled awe the way through that.

:02:40. > :02:45.Are you sure it's Michael Fassbender? He's made a lot of play

:02:46. > :02:50.of that. Is it you all the time? Actually I was at the hotel! But

:02:51. > :02:55.he's a physical actor and it combines the fidgety finger thing

:02:56. > :03:00.with the tack tillity of Daniel Johnson. Although it is absurdly

:03:01. > :03:12.comic and has terrific music by the band playing the Music Live, Maggie

:03:13. > :03:17.Gyllenhaal playing It moves into something tragic and very moving.

:03:18. > :03:22.The genius of it, by Lenny Abrahamson, a story of these two

:03:23. > :03:27.outsiders, a bit waiting for Goddo, what this has is really inventive

:03:28. > :03:29.musical score, a brilliant job with the score. Great performances not

:03:30. > :03:34.least with Michael Fassbender wearing that head. The mask being

:03:35. > :03:38.liberating rather than being imprisoning. It's a genuinely

:03:39. > :03:46.exceptional and unexpected pop movie. It reminded me in the tone of

:03:47. > :03:50.Todd Haynes' superstar or that strange movie Brothers of the Head.

:03:51. > :03:53.It starts as a grinning farce and then moves into something all

:03:54. > :03:57.together more moving, more poignant and tragic. It is a unique film. You

:03:58. > :04:00.will not see anything else like. It I know it's not for everything.

:04:01. > :04:02.Three women in the office have already said to me, Michael

:04:03. > :04:06.Fassbender in a mask, that doesn't do it for them. Maybe not a selling

:04:07. > :04:10.point. It's very brave to take Michael Fassbender and cover his

:04:11. > :04:16.head for the entirety of the film. Lenny Abrahamson is the man for the

:04:17. > :04:20.job. Jon Ronson has done a great job. It's one of my filmles of the

:04:21. > :04:26.year now and I will be surprise today it isn't at the end of the

:04:27. > :04:31.year. Now Next Goal Wins. The American Samoa team lost 31`0 to

:04:32. > :04:36.Australia. They were labelled the world's worst football team. This is

:04:37. > :04:40.a documentary in which they get in a coach to get them off the bottom

:04:41. > :04:42.when it comes to the World Cup qualifiers. It's a really moving

:04:43. > :04:46.piece of work. I don't care about football. But watching this, for the

:04:47. > :04:50.first time ever, I punched the air when the goal were scored. The team

:04:51. > :04:59.are inspirational. The real man of the match is this transgender

:05:00. > :05:04.character, who is a really wins the trust and the respect of Thomas

:05:05. > :05:08.Rongen, who is the coach, who has all this dark stuff in his

:05:09. > :05:12.background, he's overcoming personal tragedy. The whole thing about Next

:05:13. > :05:17.Goal Wins, it's about OK, it doesn't matter who scores the most goals,

:05:18. > :05:21.it's a film about triumph over adversity with people who are really

:05:22. > :05:24.decent, really interesting and really interesting in playing a

:05:25. > :05:29.sport for the best possible motive, which is to do better at it. If this

:05:30. > :05:34.doesn't win you over, you are hard hearted indeed. The Wind Rises. The

:05:35. > :05:37.last film apparently from Hayao Miyazaki, that he says he's

:05:38. > :05:43.retiring. Though he has said that br. It's a fictional film, partly

:05:44. > :05:48.inspired by the life of a plane designer in. His dreams, as a young

:05:49. > :05:52.boy, he meets the Italian plane designer and dreams of flying,

:05:53. > :05:57.flying is his ultimate ambition. Here's a clip.

:05:58. > :06:02.Which world will you choose? I just want to create beautiful aeroplanes.

:06:03. > :06:25.Like that? Very graceful. I have a long way to

:06:26. > :06:35.go. I don't even have an engine or cockpit yet.

:06:36. > :06:47.Bravo. A beautiful dream. It is actually dream`like. It is. Zbli was

:06:48. > :06:54.drifting off there. That is a dream sequence. The film mixes fact and

:06:55. > :07:01.fantasy. It is a film about the love of a single ambition, which he says

:07:02. > :07:05.dreaming for something too beautiful is too much. It is a love story,

:07:06. > :07:09.which keeps it grounded. The animation is extraordinary. It's a

:07:10. > :07:13.more grown up film than a lot of Miyazaki's work. He always makes

:07:14. > :07:18.films with extraordinary age appeal. In this case, this is more grown up.

:07:19. > :07:21.It feels like a final statement. There's been controversy in Japan

:07:22. > :07:24.about whether or not it deals with the issue of making planes, which

:07:25. > :07:29.were then used for warfare, but there's a moment in it, when a

:07:30. > :07:33.character says rather a world with pyramids than one which doesn't.

:07:34. > :07:38.It's not Meyer's best work, but it's very poignant. More grown up. You

:07:39. > :07:46.can see, the animation is breath taking. Looks joyous. It is also

:07:47. > :07:51.tragic. Pick of the week, I was checking out some facts about this,

:07:52. > :07:56.Blue Ruin. It was funded by a kickstarter target of $38,000. That

:07:57. > :08:00.shows what you can do with not a lot of money. It's an extraordinary use

:08:01. > :08:05.of that money. More and more people are make movies for little budget.

:08:06. > :08:11.That re`lies on great script, great performances. Blue Ruin has all of

:08:12. > :08:18.those. It's like an anti`revenge movie. It has a powerful performance

:08:19. > :08:24.by Macon Blair in the central role. A terrific watch. Who prefer Michael

:08:25. > :08:30.Fassbender without a fask on `` mask on, your DVD of the week is 12 Years

:08:31. > :08:37.a Slave. Michael Fassbender's character is the gnattiest character

:08:38. > :08:41.in the `` gnattiest character in the nastiest character in the film.

:08:42. > :08:45.Steve McQueen turns out to be a great story teller. This is an

:08:46. > :08:49.important film. You need to see. It You do indeed. Mark, thanks very

:08:50. > :08:57.much. A quick reminder, you will find more film news and reviews from

:08:58. > :08:58.Mark on his BBC blog: That's it for this week, thank you for watching.

:08:59. > :09:17.Goodbye. It's a beautiful evening out there,

:09:18. > :09:20.if only it would stay that way. By dawn it will be wet and windy for

:09:21. > :09:22.most. The rain
