:00:06. > :00:16.have the latest on the cricket. That's all coming up at six 30p.

:00:16. > :00:24.

:00:24. > :00:27.Now, it is time for the film review. Hello and welcome to The Film

:00:27. > :00:33.Hello and welcome to The Film Review. To take us through the

:00:33. > :00:37.releases is Anna Smith. I have been looking forward to Alan

:00:37. > :00:42.Partridge: Alpha Papa, Steve Coogan brings his much loved character to

:00:42. > :00:48.the big screen and Alan is thrust into a hostage situation.

:00:48. > :00:52.Then we have Foxfire, the story of a girl gang in the 1950s. It is set in

:00:52. > :00:59.upstate New York but we have a French correct, Laurent Cantet, and

:00:59. > :01:06.then a film you may have heard of -- a French turret. He Lone Ranger,

:01:06. > :01:13.famously a flop in the United States. -- a French director. How

:01:13. > :01:20.was Alpha Papa? It is very good fun. It does not get too ambitious. It is

:01:20. > :01:23.a hostage situation but it is still set in Norwich. It keeps it local to

:01:24. > :01:29.Alan. There is a hostage situation in the local radio station where he

:01:29. > :01:34.works. A disgruntled former employee comes in, guns blazing. Alan is the

:01:34. > :01:44.only one he will trust to negotiate. He uses it as an opportunity to

:01:44. > :01:52.

:01:52. > :01:57.circus? Pretty puffed up, like an owl. Let's hope you are wise.Nice,

:01:58. > :02:05.you pitched it up, I knocked it out of the park. As far as the press is

:02:05. > :02:15.concerned, you are the face of this siege. I am siege face. Exactly. I

:02:15. > :02:19.

:02:19. > :02:24.like you. He likes me! I have got to be quick. I am joking, enjoy me!

:02:25. > :02:28.Everybody else is. I am with a hair's-breadth of getting the

:02:28. > :02:38.breakfast show. I am going to call myself the morning rooster or the

:02:38. > :02:44.

:02:44. > :02:50.that. -- half a dozen times. He is thrown into this situation, you just

:02:50. > :02:53.once to save his own skin but then he spies this opportunity when

:02:53. > :02:57.ambition comes into play. Steve Coogan is still very funny in the

:02:58. > :03:02.role and it is very faithful to his character. There are a couple of

:03:02. > :03:10.things where he is wearing trendy trainers, maybe it is a big screen

:03:10. > :03:13.thing but it is very funny. It keeps it true to the character. It is

:03:13. > :03:19.brilliantly written, that is the key to the material. One thing I wonder,

:03:19. > :03:24.we have Mr Bean, Norman Wisdom, these comic characters that sell

:03:24. > :03:29.around the world and sell a bit of a British brand. I wonder if this

:03:29. > :03:33.works anywhere else? A very good point. He is a bit of a Ricky Jay

:03:33. > :03:41.face in the office character and he managed to export so let's hope they

:03:41. > :03:45.don't do an American version. not sure that would work. Foxfire.

:03:45. > :03:50.This is an interesting film, based on a book which was also made into a

:03:50. > :03:53.film with Angelina Jolie. This is more faithful to the book, set in

:03:53. > :03:58.1950s upstate New York about a group of girls who decide to take the law

:03:58. > :04:03.into their own hands. When they feel abused and patronised by local men.

:04:04. > :04:09.There are moral dilemmas, social issues, feminist issues. My problem

:04:09. > :04:14.is the performances and perhaps the correction. Laurent Cantet in his

:04:14. > :04:20.first English-language film, the dialogue seems a bit flat and I

:04:20. > :04:23.can't help wondering if it was him still perhaps finding his feet,

:04:23. > :04:29.directing American actresses. It is still worth a watch if the subject

:04:29. > :04:34.that appeals. I know we will talk about The Heat but is it a girl

:04:34. > :04:39.buddy movie? We had a lot of directors who seem to think older

:04:39. > :04:47.audiences deserve to be entertained, a lot of films being called the

:04:48. > :04:51.grave pound. Is this a new kind of sub John? -- genre? I don't incur

:04:51. > :04:54.are particularly going for the girl buddy movie market. The characters

:04:54. > :04:58.are not well drawn enough. It is more of an arthouse film that

:04:58. > :05:05.happens to start winning and that is a wonderful thing, because it is so

:05:05. > :05:12.rare. -- happens to star women. can't think of anything more

:05:12. > :05:22.opposite to not film than The Lone Ranger. Yes, big budget, famously

:05:22. > :05:27.losing money in the states. Armie Hammer plays The Lone Ranger and he

:05:28. > :05:31.goes off searching for his brother. Johnny Depp is Tonto, Native

:05:31. > :05:41.American Indian. This is a clip where they are forced to work

:05:41. > :05:44.

:05:44. > :05:54.together. It is the end of the line. Can we jump? Can they jump? There

:05:54. > :06:25.

:06:25. > :06:29.are children on board! You're not conclusion, not very exciting but it

:06:30. > :06:33.isn't that bad. He reviews from America said it was awful. It is

:06:33. > :06:37.fine, it is too long, it is torn between different worlds, trying to

:06:37. > :06:42.be a comedy caper and then a serious western with cannibalism and all

:06:42. > :06:48.sorts. But there are entertaining moments. The cast is good, the

:06:48. > :06:50.costumes are great. The script could have done with a tidy up. You think

:06:50. > :06:55.for 250 million they might have thought of making the script more

:06:56. > :06:59.entertaining. I don't think you get your money 's worth but it is not

:06:59. > :07:04.disastrous. You might think twice about taking the kids to a film that

:07:04. > :07:11.long but it is enjoyable in parts. Is there a market for westerns?

:07:11. > :07:16.Django unchained is very different. It is darker and grown-up. Cowboys

:07:16. > :07:25.and aliens, wild wild West, famous flops. Hollywood does not seem to be

:07:26. > :07:30.learning beef family Western. -- learning the family Western. Growing

:07:30. > :07:34.up as a certain generation, you saw it on TV so you expected to see it

:07:34. > :07:39.in the cinema. You don't really see it on TV. I don't think it has the

:07:39. > :07:43.alert for young boys that it used to. Tickets selling for this in the

:07:43. > :07:50.UK is an indicator. I think space, computer games, might be more

:07:50. > :07:54.exciting. Comic heroes seem to do very well. Your pick of the week is

:07:54. > :08:01.The Heat and we have two very good comedy films. Perfect for summer

:08:01. > :08:06.viewing. The Heat is the girl in the movie. It is good fun, two

:08:06. > :08:15.mismatched cops who hate each other and learn to work together. The plot

:08:15. > :08:19.is legible but it is very funny. Seeing two women together... You

:08:19. > :08:27.would not know it was Melissa McCarthy by looking at a pace -- the

:08:27. > :08:34.poster, it looks a bit airbrushed. If it wasn't women, it would be a

:08:34. > :08:37.cliche. I think that is the only thing that saves it. The

:08:37. > :08:42.relationship between them is inherently different because they

:08:42. > :08:52.are two women and they have different things to discuss. Your

:08:52. > :08:58.DVD film of the week, Trance. a psychological film that had a

:08:58. > :09:04.mixed reception, I really like it. James McAvoy is a criminal who asks

:09:04. > :09:09.a hypnotist to help them recover its memory -- him recover his memory.

:09:09. > :09:12.There are a lot of twists and turns and delving into his mind.

:09:12. > :09:18.critic said this is the Danny Boyle of the beach, not slum dog

:09:18. > :09:26.millionaire, he did not mean it as a condiment. I enjoyed it, I'm

:09:26. > :09:29.interested in hypnotism. -- did not mean it as a compliment.
