:00:27. > :00:34.Review. Taking us through this week's releases is Anna Smith.

:00:34. > :00:42.first one is Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Steve Coogan bringing his much

:00:42. > :00:52.loved character to the big screen, and Allen in a hostage situation.

:00:52. > :00:54.

:00:54. > :00:57.Then Foxfire, based on a book set in New York with a French director. And

:00:57. > :01:01.a film you may have heard of, The Lone Ranger, they mislay a flop in

:01:01. > :01:05.the United States. Will it be a flop here? A comedy Western with Johnny

:01:05. > :01:14.Depp. I am a huge fan of Alan Partridge.

:01:14. > :01:23.How is it? Great fun. Not too ambitious, a hostage situation, but

:01:23. > :01:27.still in Norwich, keeping it local. A hostage situation in the local

:01:27. > :01:34.radio station, a disgruntled former employee comes in guns blazing, he

:01:34. > :01:41.only trust Alan, who uses this as an opportunity is to impress his new

:01:41. > :01:48.boss. -- as an opportunity.

:01:48. > :01:58.How are you feeling about this whole media circus? Really puffed up, like

:01:58. > :01:58.

:01:58. > :02:08.an owl. It is like synergy. But that is lesbians. As far as the press are

:02:08. > :02:12.

:02:12. > :02:22.concerned, you are the face of this. I am face. -- I am seige face,

:02:22. > :02:22.

:02:22. > :02:31.Allen, argue all day? -- Alan, are you all right? I have

:02:31. > :02:39.almost got the break issue! I could be called the talking cock!

:02:39. > :02:45.I laughed so many times. It makes the best of his characteristics. His

:02:45. > :02:51.cowardliness comes to the fore, and only wanting to save his own skin,

:02:51. > :02:56.then he spies an opportunity, his ambition comes into play. Steve

:02:56. > :03:03.Coogan is still funny in the role, and it is faithful to his character.

:03:03. > :03:08.Some things, maybe the trendy trainers she was wearing, but it is

:03:09. > :03:15.very funny, not ambitious, keeping it local and true to the character.

:03:15. > :03:21.It sounds brilliantly written. That is key. I often wonder, Mr Bean is

:03:21. > :03:27.one obvious, going back to Norman Wisdom, characters selling around

:03:27. > :03:32.the world with a British brand. Does this work anywhere else? Maybe. It

:03:32. > :03:42.is a bit like the David Brent character, which managed to be

:03:42. > :03:48.exported. And what about Foxfire: Confessions Of A Girl Gang? This was

:03:48. > :03:53.made into a film in the 1990s with Angelina Jolie, but this adaptation

:03:53. > :03:59.is more faithful to the book about a girl who take the law into their own

:03:59. > :04:04.hands when they feel abused and patronised by local men. Some

:04:04. > :04:09.feminist issues. By problem was the performances and perhaps the

:04:09. > :04:17.direction. We have the French director with his first

:04:18. > :04:21.English-language film. He had The Class, which did well at Cannes.

:04:21. > :04:28.Perhaps he was just finding his feet with American actresses. But still

:04:28. > :04:33.worth a watch. I know we will talk about The Heat in a moment, but is

:04:33. > :04:43.this a girl buddy movie? A lot of direction is deemed to the audiences

:04:43. > :04:44.

:04:44. > :04:49.deserve to be entertained. Is this a new kind of sub genre? I think it

:04:49. > :04:57.just happens to be centred around girls. The characters are not well

:04:57. > :05:03.drawn enough stop it is more of an arthouse film. But that is still a

:05:03. > :05:09.good thing, it is so rare to have so many characters all e-mail. And --

:05:09. > :05:16.all female. And quite the opposite, The Lone

:05:16. > :05:20.Ranger. Famously losing money. Armie Hammer plays the main character,

:05:20. > :05:26.going to see his brother who is killed, he searches the bag I with

:05:26. > :05:36.the help of Tonto, played by Johnny Depp. They are forced to work

:05:36. > :05:42.

:05:42. > :05:52.It is the end of the line! Do we jump? What about the passengers?

:05:52. > :06:28.

:06:28. > :06:35.There are children on board! It did not look that bad. It is not

:06:35. > :06:39.that bad. It is fine, but overlong, tries to be a comedy for kids, then

:06:39. > :06:44.a serious Western involving things like cannibalism. But there are

:06:44. > :06:51.entertaining moments, the cast is good, costume is great, the money is

:06:51. > :06:56.on screen. But the script could have been tidied. Yes, for 250 million,

:06:56. > :07:02.it could have been a better script. You might think again about taking

:07:02. > :07:12.the kids to such a long film, but it is enjoyable in parts. Is there a

:07:12. > :07:13.

:07:14. > :07:22.market for westerns? Django is one, But we have had some flops. Yes,

:07:22. > :07:27.Hollywood does not seem to be learning. Back to the future -- Back

:07:27. > :07:33.To The Future III, that seems to be the last one aimed at a family

:07:33. > :07:41.audience. You do not see it on television any more. I do not think

:07:41. > :07:45.it has the attraction to young boys as it used to. Computer games and

:07:45. > :07:55.space might be more exciting. Superheroes do well, how boys not so

:07:55. > :08:00.much. Your pick of the week is The Heat. Two comedy films, perfect for

:08:00. > :08:05.me for summer viewing, along with Alan Partridge. Melissa McCarthy and

:08:05. > :08:13.Sandra Bullock at two cops who hate each other, negligible plot, but

:08:13. > :08:17.very funny. They do some things different with the characters. You

:08:17. > :08:25.would not know it to be Melissa McCarthy in the poster, she seems to

:08:25. > :08:30.be airbrushed. She is terrific. Yeah. But it would be a cliche if it

:08:30. > :08:37.was not women. I think that is what saves it stop because they are

:08:37. > :08:46.female, it offers a different dynamic. They have different things

:08:46. > :08:51.to discuss than you would have male colleagues. And the DVD of the week

:08:51. > :08:58.is the Danny Boyle movie Trance. had a mixed reaction. I really liked

:08:58. > :09:04.it. James McAvoy as a criminal with amnesiac, asking a hypnotist played

:09:04. > :09:10.by Rosario Dawson to find out where the stolen painting is. A lot of

:09:10. > :09:18.delving into his mind. I read one critic who said this was the Danny

:09:18. > :09:25.Boyle of The Beach, not of Slumdog, and I do not think that was a
