:00:00. > :00:17.title decider in the Premier League. That's at 6:30pm.

:00:18. > :00:24.Hello and welcome to the Film Review. To take us through this

:00:25. > :00:30.week's cinema releases is Jason Solomons. So Jason, what do we have

:00:31. > :00:38.this week? We have a world of cinema today. We started Ireland for

:00:39. > :00:44.Calvary, starring the bearer of an actor, Brendan Gleeson. We are off

:00:45. > :00:52.to India, for a tentative and pungent romance from The Lunchbox.

:00:53. > :00:59.And we are back to 1960s Nigeria and the Civil War. Thandie Newton and

:01:00. > :01:06.Chiwetel Ejiofor star in Half Of A Yellow Sun. We begin in Ireland with

:01:07. > :01:14.one of my favourite actors and directors. John Michael McDonagh.

:01:15. > :01:20.There is also Martin. And his mother John. They specialise in firecracker

:01:21. > :01:25.wit and absurdity and profanity and philosophy. Calvary is no

:01:26. > :01:30.different, the story of Brendan Gleeson who plays Father James

:01:31. > :01:36.Lavelle. A parishioner is out to get him. It is poignant because of

:01:37. > :01:43.today's news story. Somebody is out to get revenge on the clergy. The

:01:44. > :01:47.father is a good man. He faces up to Chris O Dowd. The film is populated

:01:48. > :01:58.by Irish character actors including Dylan Moran. It has that absurd

:01:59. > :02:07.setting and deep issues. If we get locked in here we will have to make

:02:08. > :02:15.love to keep warm! You were out of the house where you? Is everything

:02:16. > :02:20.all right? Everything is fine. No everything is not fine. The shades

:02:21. > :02:28.of everything. Oh, that. What is going on? That was not me. It is the

:02:29. > :02:34.black fellows she has been seeing. I mean, the coloured fellow. I am

:02:35. > :02:40.sorry, I did not mean to be racist. She speaks in riddles half of the

:02:41. > :02:47.time. I cannot make sense of her. I think she is bipolar, lactose

:02:48. > :02:52.intolerant, one of the two. I do not know where I am with her and I am

:02:53. > :02:58.glad to have her off my hands. And if the new man is knocking her

:02:59. > :03:03.about? What has that to do with me? Not everyone can carry the weight of

:03:04. > :03:13.the world. It is Father Ted and Reservoir dogs. In this one there is

:03:14. > :03:19.a lot of anger. Anti`clerical anger and anger at the state of Ireland

:03:20. > :03:26.today. There is a rich banker, played by Dylan Moran. Immigration,

:03:27. > :03:32.allsorts of things going on. There is a daughter who comes to visit and

:03:33. > :03:36.a secret American author. It is almost the whole world is against

:03:37. > :03:42.Brendan Gleeson and he sails through with dignity, even though he faces

:03:43. > :03:46.impending doom. Probably a metaphor for the country itself. It is a

:03:47. > :03:52.strange film because of the blend of humour with deep philosophy, unusual

:03:53. > :03:59.to find a film with philosophical discussions. It is interesting he

:04:00. > :04:05.plays a good priest and a good man at a time when we have been

:04:06. > :04:11.discussing in the news, that of the child abuse stories. It is about

:04:12. > :04:17.faith, in the church, inhumanity, maintaining that belief in that

:04:18. > :04:21.system through being a good man. It is an interesting film. Some people

:04:22. > :04:28.will be a last berated by it, some will be thrilled. I am on it. Some

:04:29. > :04:34.moments are very funny, and some are sobering league serious. The

:04:35. > :04:44.Lunchbox. One of the very strange things, the lunch culture. The

:04:45. > :04:53.people who carry the Tiffin stacked boxes. Harford examined it and found

:04:54. > :04:59.it the most perfect system. One in 1 billion lunchboxes goes astray. The

:05:00. > :05:05.story `` in 1 million. The story is about the one that goes astray. He

:05:06. > :05:10.opens the box and discovers the food is better than normal and puts

:05:11. > :05:18.inside a note of thanks. He finds out it was made by a frustrated

:05:19. > :05:23.housewife who concocts wonderful dishes for him. Her husband has not

:05:24. > :05:28.noticed. It is tender, the romance begins. The notes are left in

:05:29. > :05:44.between the bread in the Tiffin box. It is like 84 Charrington cross

:05:45. > :05:51.road. `` Charing Cross Road. You also think of monsoon wedding. It is

:05:52. > :05:57.not slum dog millionaire, it does not have that pace. It has a

:05:58. > :06:02.documentary realism which is lovely to see and beautifully handles. A

:06:03. > :06:06.lot of funny parts about modern life. You are in the commuter

:06:07. > :06:14.trains, and they are writing notes to each other. All of life is there.

:06:15. > :06:17.Visiting a graveyard. On the commuter train, he said there is no

:06:18. > :06:26.room in the graveyard, they only get standing room only, even in death.

:06:27. > :06:30.Half Of A Yellow Sun. From the wonderful novel. It is one of those

:06:31. > :06:38.when you read it, you are not sure they can make a film about it. It is

:06:39. > :06:41.about says Hugh Allah to, the senses of Africa and trying to transpose it

:06:42. > :06:49.to screen against the backdrop of the civilian war in `` Civil War in

:06:50. > :06:57.1960s. It has not been on the screen before. Only in documentaries. We

:06:58. > :07:06.have two fantastic actors, Thandie Newton and Chiwetel Ejiofor. He

:07:07. > :07:09.brings that wonderful dignity to the role of an intellectual Nigerian

:07:10. > :07:14.professor who is slightly away from the war, but still a firebrand and

:07:15. > :07:29.looking to educate a boy who works for him. John Boyega. He is in fact

:07:30. > :07:37.a south London. It is arriving this weekend. Very special. Make sure the

:07:38. > :07:42.house is clean. I can cook. She likes her fried rice a certain way.

:07:43. > :07:47.I am not sure you will make something suitable. I can make

:07:48. > :07:55.that. Let's make the rice and you can get the chicken. It is not for

:07:56. > :08:01.negotiation. Did you go to school? Standard two. I learn everything

:08:02. > :08:10.fast. How long ago? Many years, but I learn fast. Widely juiced up

:08:11. > :08:17.school? My father's crops fail. Why did your father not find somebody to

:08:18. > :08:21.lend school fees? I suppose you will be the oldest, studying standard

:08:22. > :08:34.three, but the only way to get their respect is to be the best. Do you

:08:35. > :08:54.understand? Yes, sir. My name is not serve. `` sir. Call me Odenigbo.

:08:55. > :08:59.Critics have said it is boring. All of African life is there. They have

:09:00. > :09:05.tried to mix politics with the personal. You have a love story, the

:09:06. > :09:08.tale of two sisters against the epic backdrop and they have tried to mix

:09:09. > :09:16.in the politics and almost educate people about the history of Nigeria.

:09:17. > :09:21.It does not quite work for me. I do not think I knew any more about the

:09:22. > :09:28.conflict from watching this film. It is a pity because you have the

:09:29. > :09:33.newsreel of Michael Nicholson and Frederick Forsyth, who was a war

:09:34. > :09:39.correspondent. It is something close to the family of Chiwetel Ejiofor.

:09:40. > :09:46.It is beautifully written. Can the poetry translate. Can it come to the

:09:47. > :09:51.screen? It does not quite come off in the way you want it to having

:09:52. > :09:55.read the novel. But the performances are exemption rate. The best thing

:09:56. > :10:00.that Thandie Newton has done. There is excitement. It is a love story.

:10:01. > :10:06.Can you maintain it against the backdrop of politics and war? Your

:10:07. > :10:13.Best of the week is a documentary. Twenty Feet From Stardom. Backing

:10:14. > :10:18.singers. You see and hear them but do not realise how wonderful they

:10:19. > :10:22.are. It is an Oscar`winning documentary. People are coming out,

:10:23. > :10:28.tapping their feet, it is inspirational. People who have

:10:29. > :10:37.worked with Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, the

:10:38. > :10:44.original brown sugar. Can you make the transition from being a backing

:10:45. > :10:49.singer and becoming a star? It is interesting. Not everyone can be

:10:50. > :10:56.famous. There is not enough room up front. Can you be a team player, or,

:10:57. > :11:05.a leader? The music is fantastic. And the DVD is likely's Oldboy. The

:11:06. > :11:17.remake of a Korean movie. Josh Brolin, and a little over the top in

:11:18. > :11:26.a Spike sort of way. For a DVD at home, it is fallacious, bloodthirsty

:11:27. > :11:30.and stylish fun. You will find more film news and reviews on the

:11:31. > :11:42.website. That is it. Thanks for watching. Goodbye.

:11:43. > :11:50.A good`looking Friday evening across most of the UK. Sunny spells.

:11:51. > :11:55.Temperatures will fall sharply. Most will continue to see sunshine this

:11:56. > :11:59.weekend. In the northern half of the UK, expect a brisk wind to pick up.

:12:00. > :12:00.There will be some
