:00:00. > :00:00.million. We look ahead to Sunday's World Cup final as well. Now, time
:00:00. > :00:16.for the film review. Hello and welcome to The Film Review
:00:17. > :00:19.on BBC News. To take us through this week's
:00:20. > :00:38.cinema releases is Mark Kermode. We have very heard, starring Ellar
:00:39. > :00:41.Coltrane. We have Transformers. We really want is more Transformers in
:00:42. > :01:07.our lives! And we have Begin Again. Barely heard has a nine`year`old boy
:01:08. > :01:11.and ten`year`old boy. We first meet the central character at the age of
:01:12. > :01:20.six and the film is filmed over 12 years. It is a portrait of growing
:01:21. > :01:28.up from boy to adolescent teenager to adulthood. What is extraordinary
:01:29. > :01:33.about it is that it could equally be called parenthood for motherhood or
:01:34. > :01:38.system modal brotherhood. We see the entire family changing. It is tender
:01:39. > :01:43.and a very human portrait of the changes which affect everybody,
:01:44. > :01:52.whether they are young or old, from a director who primarily cares about
:01:53. > :01:55.character. You met him. I met him last month, in fact.
:01:56. > :01:58.Last month, I interviewed the director Richard Linklater and star
:01:59. > :02:01.of the film Ellar Coltrane, and they told me about the challenges of
:02:02. > :02:19.Every year, we had this luxury of talking, next year, we will need to
:02:20. > :02:30.go, and we got to talk about it. This was about filming and thinking.
:02:31. > :02:33.A collaboration. Then you are, eight, nine, ten, did you feel he
:02:34. > :02:41.was listening to what you were saying? Definitely. It's very
:02:42. > :02:46.incidental but there is a lot of me reflected in the director. What most
:02:47. > :02:53.impressed me was the ambition of this film. It's very simple but
:02:54. > :02:57.can't be simple: 12 years to do a project in Hollywood as a lifetime.
:02:58. > :03:02.When you are watching it, you don't think there thinking of the
:03:03. > :03:09.logistics and difficulties. You watch it and it is like dropping in
:03:10. > :03:14.as a family member. This action just happens in place out in front of you
:03:15. > :03:20.and the intimacy you have with these characters, the film is 166 minutes
:03:21. > :03:27.long, that time flies by, but you never think, wow! How hard is that
:03:28. > :03:30.to do? It is not just to do with physically watching the characters
:03:31. > :03:41.change. It's the way the film understands with different periods
:03:42. > :03:47.of people's lives. Particularly, even though as the father, in a way,
:03:48. > :03:56.he is just as Polish as is young son. He grows up as well. The
:03:57. > :04:00.director is extraordinary. The key thing, where tourism is a part of
:04:01. > :04:09.cinema. He appears to look with his characters. The film is really
:04:10. > :04:17.remarkable. I think Transformers is also 166 minutes long. Transformers
:04:18. > :04:23.is exactly the same running time and yet, it feels about 50 times longer.
:04:24. > :04:30.It feels like you could grow an entire new set of teeth. We have
:04:31. > :04:37.Mark Warburg stepping into the central role and then we have got
:04:38. > :04:44.2.75 hours of great big machines hitting each other while the camera
:04:45. > :04:49.looks up the leading lady's skirt and everything explodes really
:04:50. > :04:55.loudly. But sadly, not better. Forgive me, but I am missing the
:04:56. > :05:01.point here. Isn't this just the hamburger in movies? It's the same
:05:02. > :05:07.one, time after time, if you like that kind of thing. He makes the
:05:08. > :05:13.same movie over and over again. Actually, most people don't enjoy
:05:14. > :05:21.it. I have yet to meet someone who says, Transformers two is a
:05:22. > :05:29.masterpiece! The director said, it's great having critics slack my movies
:05:30. > :05:37.of. It's terrible! He's an appalling film`maker. There is another
:05:38. > :05:45.argument that this is the beginning of a new kind of cinema for 3`D.
:05:46. > :05:52.Begin Again. He made a lovely movie once about a busker. A busker, a
:05:53. > :06:00.woman, a Hoover and a song. This is a similar idea. Keira Knightley is a
:06:01. > :06:04.British singer`songwriter in New York. She meets a man who decides
:06:05. > :06:15.she has star potential but she doesn't necessarily want to be
:06:16. > :06:26.snapped up. Here's a clip. I'm in. What? I want to make records. I want
:06:27. > :06:30.to produce them, I want to sign you. Did you see what just happened up
:06:31. > :06:35.there? I don't like music. Who cares if they don't get it? You need to
:06:36. > :06:45.work on your performance a little bit. Are you really ANR man? You
:06:46. > :06:51.look more like a homeless man. That is some song you've got there. Plus,
:06:52. > :06:57.you are beautiful. What is beauty got to do with anything? I just
:06:58. > :07:08.think music is about is, not eyes. And I am not Judy Gyle and. ``
:07:09. > :07:17.Garland. The dialogue is great! I think you're Knightley is pretty
:07:18. > :07:24.terrific. `` Keira Knightley. It's a fairy tale, a fantasy about bucking
:07:25. > :07:32.the music industry. It is a companion piece to the other movie.
:07:33. > :07:38.What it is is moving, charming, sweet natured and I really enjoyed
:07:39. > :07:43.being in their company. In the past, many years ago, I didn't think Keira
:07:44. > :07:49.Knightley was the best actress in the world but I think she is
:07:50. > :08:04.terrific in this. And he looks like a homeless man! It's made with a
:08:05. > :08:11.lotta love and affection. The songs are not quite as good this time but
:08:12. > :08:16.the film is still charming. It is a very warm experience. And I like the
:08:17. > :08:25.characters. The best of the week is not a warm experience. No. It's set
:08:26. > :08:30.in a very particular time, a time of video cassettes and pre`mobile
:08:31. > :08:38.phones. It flips between, one minute a thriller, one minute a horror
:08:39. > :08:58.movie, almost a social satire. Very fine performances by the central
:08:59. > :09:03.cast. Annual DVD of the week. Scarlett Johansson is posing as an
:09:04. > :09:07.alien. It's very ambitious. It is based on a very difficult novel and
:09:08. > :09:11.doesn't always work but what I love about it is the amount of ambition
:09:12. > :09:16.it has, the fact it goes, if I will fail, I will fail on my own terms.
:09:17. > :09:22.Things and are breathtaking, things don't work, but I love the fact that
:09:23. > :09:25.you have Transformers, and the year, a science`fiction movie who is
:09:26. > :09:29.interested in ideas first and foremost, not money. Everybody
:09:30. > :09:33.should see it. A quick reminder before we go that
:09:34. > :09:36.you'll find more film news and reviews from across the BBC online,
:09:37. > :10:00.including all our previous shows. For the last couple of days, we have
:10:01. > :10:04.had weather fronts coming in from the North Sea. This weekend we will
:10:05. > :10:09.flip a coin back to business and as usual and have our weather systems
:10:10. > :10:12.coming in off the Atlantic. Splashes of rain and the potential for some
:10:13. > :10:13.of it to be
