:00:00. > :00:00.again. We will have the latest from the Tour of Britain `` Yorkshire are

:00:00. > :00:21.county champions. Now, it is time for the Film Review.

:00:22. > :00:25.Welcome to the film review, on BBC News. Taking us through this weeks

:00:26. > :00:34.cinema releases, Jason Solomons. One of the last performances by the

:00:35. > :00:40.late great Philip Seymour Hoffman, spy thriller, A Most Wanted Man.

:00:41. > :00:50.Leaving the best until last. Stop motion animation... And emotion... ?

:00:51. > :00:57.Easier said! The Boxtrolls. And finally, we have got the 1984 hit,

:00:58. > :01:04.the striking miners, saved by London gay and lesbians, Pride.

:01:05. > :01:14.Starting with the last film of Philip Seymour Hoffman, A Most

:01:15. > :01:23.Wanted Man, disillusioned spy chief. He plays a German, played Gunter. ``

:01:24. > :01:27.named Gunter. The spy network is feeling guilty that they allowed the

:01:28. > :01:32.big one to slip through the net, they are recovering from Munich. It

:01:33. > :01:42.is like Tinker tailor soldier spy, we are in the world of John the

:01:43. > :01:45.Karen. `` John Le Carre. Definitely a downbeat spy thriller, Philip

:01:46. > :01:53.Seymour Hoffman is terrific, he drinks too much whiskey, smokes too

:01:54. > :01:57.much, he is... Lugubrious. He is yellow, he does not get out much,

:01:58. > :02:02.News Covert, he spends too much time in airless rooms. He will tell us

:02:03. > :02:07.what he is about to do. He is a wanted man, if you have knowledge of

:02:08. > :02:10.his whereabouts, you are obliged to follow due process, under the

:02:11. > :02:20.constitution. You mean, arresting him. Somebody is seeking to make

:02:21. > :02:26.contact in Hamburg. We have had no briefing on this. If you were doing

:02:27. > :02:31.your job, you would not need one. We are spies, all I'm asking for is

:02:32. > :02:36.more time. This unit was set up to develop intelligence, resources,

:02:37. > :02:42.inside Germany's Islamic community. That is why we are here. This

:02:43. > :02:46.banker, do we know what it wanted from him? Not yet and if we move

:02:47. > :02:51.against him now, the chances are that we never will. I think he knows

:02:52. > :03:04.what he's doing, tow. Perhaps you should let him get on with it. ``

:03:05. > :03:08.Otto. Robin Wright is fantastic in this, it is about the international

:03:09. > :03:14.network, she has a kind of house of cards via about her. Noodle shops,

:03:15. > :03:21.kebabs shops, the Islamic community, boxing rings. Chases through

:03:22. > :03:25.nightclubs. `` vibe. You say it is not action packed, looking at the

:03:26. > :03:29.Prince of this, the Daily Mail said that it was anaemic, that it lacks

:03:30. > :03:34.energy. Is that a part of what this is about? It is about the energy of

:03:35. > :03:38.the long game, this is spying, reminded me of the Oscar`winning

:03:39. > :03:49.German film the lives of others, that was about the Stasi. They are

:03:50. > :03:54.after a man named after a chess player, and it is like a game of

:03:55. > :04:03.chess. The net is closing tightly, the cold hand of modern spy work,

:04:04. > :04:11.spy craft, this is it for the film. Philip Seymour Hoffman is

:04:12. > :04:16.outstanding. It is very good. He is a wonderful actor, he put sticks and

:04:17. > :04:19.habits into... He is a man who has lived and has been lived in too

:04:20. > :04:21.much, always tapping in a shirt, doing up his type, removing

:04:22. > :04:24.cigarettes, fiddling about. cigarettes, fiddling about. It is a

:04:25. > :04:31.masterful film actor 's reminds you what a great performance

:04:32. > :04:49.it was. Robin Wright, Willem Dafoe, Rachel McAdams, all American stars,

:04:50. > :04:53.is pretty big. The British version has Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, Sir Ben

:04:54. > :04:58.Kingsley. It is about the underground world of The Boxtrolls,

:04:59. > :05:09.they live in a kind of a Louth. They exist in boxes. Discarded by...

:05:10. > :05:12.Aches, fish, bread... `` eggs. One of the characters is named slightly

:05:13. > :05:19.soiled, because they are named after the boxes in which they were found!

:05:20. > :05:26.A mayor has got to get rid of them. For an animation, in the world of

:05:27. > :05:30.slick Pixar, everything is so story worked... This is all over the

:05:31. > :05:34.place! You simply surrender to it. The stop motion is to reflect, it is

:05:35. > :05:39.beautiful what they do, it takes hours to do this kind of thing. I

:05:40. > :05:44.don't know why they take the time to do this, why they bother. It is a

:05:45. > :05:49.tactile, Tim Burton sort of world, like Grimms fairy tales. Do not do

:05:50. > :05:55.this at home, if you are watching this! Metal knives into a toaster.

:05:56. > :06:01.Seems to have a Christmas DVD all over it. There is a movement towards

:06:02. > :06:04.this kind of animation, almost as a corrective to the kind of slickness

:06:05. > :06:09.of Pixar, it is from the makers of Coraline. It reminded me of

:06:10. > :06:13.Jabberwocky, by Terry Gilliam. I liked it but had no idea what was

:06:14. > :06:18.going on! Pride, a lot of people tipping this for success. Stellar

:06:19. > :06:25.cast, very much an English film about the miners strike but with a

:06:26. > :06:31.twist and based on reality. In 1985 there was a benefit concert at the

:06:32. > :06:35.Electric ballroom in Camden, pits and pervert, it was a gay night, in

:06:36. > :06:39.aid of the miners. At the time, many of the pop world, red wage, they

:06:40. > :06:45.gathered together to help the striking miners back in 1984. This

:06:46. > :06:49.is a true story. Unusual groups came together. The London homosexuals, to

:06:50. > :06:55.help the rather butch mining community. Not always an easy fit,

:06:56. > :06:57.but the Solidarity wins through. In the end we find Imelda Staunton

:06:58. > :07:11.driving a big red bus. What is that? It is the new van. We

:07:12. > :07:16.are travelling in style! What the hell is this? It is the new van,

:07:17. > :07:21.courtesy of our gay friends in London. I'm not getting into that!

:07:22. > :07:43.Well then you will have to stay here.

:07:44. > :07:58.Lesbian, are you, love? That is right, we are just off to Swansea

:07:59. > :08:00.for a massive les`off! The Financial Times has been quite critical, they

:08:01. > :08:07.said that it was tropes and tricks... I feel rather

:08:08. > :08:15.curmudgeonly, I did not surrender to the onslaught of cute. I think that

:08:16. > :08:21.is because I do not been the miners strike was particularly funny, and

:08:22. > :08:23.being gay in 1984, massive homophobia, HIV just coming out,

:08:24. > :08:28.neither of these are laughing matters. With typical big British

:08:29. > :08:33.film attitude, this goes for the humour, to lighten the load of the

:08:34. > :08:38.social realism. It is like Brust off, the full Monty, Billy Elliot.

:08:39. > :08:43.All films that I admire. But for me it did not work, it is an uneasy

:08:44. > :08:46.fit. Some really good performances however, all of the characters get

:08:47. > :08:50.their say. One comes out to their mother, one becomes a lesbian, one

:08:51. > :08:55.gets to do is disco dancing. `` Brassed Off. Dominic West here,

:08:56. > :09:07.dancing to Shame, Shame, Shame. It is not badly directed at all, it

:09:08. > :09:12.is rather too polished actually. Matthew Warchus Is the director. I

:09:13. > :09:17.got bored waiting for each character do have their story arc resolved. If

:09:18. > :09:21.you like Imelda Staunton saying lesbian, waving around a big red sex

:09:22. > :09:26.toy, that is the kind of film that is! Ill nine as well. A bylaw that

:09:27. > :09:31.has been passed unbeknownst to most people, Bill Nighy must be in every

:09:32. > :09:39.single British comedy! LAUGHTER Best DVD, this one sounds very

:09:40. > :09:45.interesting. Two Days, One Night. Marion Cotillard, doing her best

:09:46. > :09:53.role, I think, as good as her Oscar`winning role as Edith PF. As a

:09:54. > :09:56.companion piece, this is modern Solidarity, she has got to go to all

:09:57. > :10:00.of the different workers in her Belgian industrial town to rally

:10:01. > :10:09.them to get their support for her to save her job. 141 and one for all.

:10:10. > :10:16.`` Edith Piaf. `` one for one and one for all. This is dynamite by the

:10:17. > :10:26.Dardennes brothers. I have seen this, rather surprisingly. It

:10:27. > :10:31.followed the passage of frat films. Reminded me of animal house. Seth

:10:32. > :10:37.Rogen and Rose Byrne have just had a baby. And Zach Efren moves in next

:10:38. > :10:43.door. He has graduated from high school musical into a party animal!

:10:44. > :10:48.This is a Friday night movie, and I laughed quite a lot. `` Zac Efron.

:10:49. > :10:56.It is a guilty pleasure of mine. I do like Seth Rogen, and I quite like

:10:57. > :11:01.Zac Efron. He has grown up and you will see his torso quite a lot! And

:11:02. > :11:05.the wife is very good as well. Rose Byrne, always fantastic. Thank you

:11:06. > :11:10.for taking us through your selections. You will find more film

:11:11. > :11:11.news and reviews from across the BBC online, including all of the

:11:12. > :11:15.previous shows. That is it for this week, thank you

:11:16. > :11:37.very much for watching. If you have plans the weekend, good

:11:38. > :11:39.news: It is dry, settled, for the next couple of
