:00:00. > :00:22.Sunday's sports personality of the year show. That is all at 6:30pm.
:00:23. > :00:26.Now, it is time for the film review. Welcome. To take us through this
:00:27. > :00:37.week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode. He has already corrected my
:00:38. > :00:43.prime station of the first film. We have to get it right, 161 minutes of
:00:44. > :00:50.it. We also have a classic reissue from 1961, the innocence. A proper
:00:51. > :01:06.chiller, the turn of the screw. We have Bill Boyd, a extraordinary love
:01:07. > :01:16.story told from Tel Aviv. The first half of the film, everyone has to
:01:17. > :01:20.realise it is smoke. They are now officially on their way. The kingdom
:01:21. > :01:25.is over yonder and to get there, they will have to go through loads
:01:26. > :01:31.of different places that, to some extent, are different levels on a
:01:32. > :01:36.great big screen computer game, but crucially, while this is all
:01:37. > :01:46.happening, the hobbit, who now has the ring with him, is changing. Here
:01:47. > :01:55.is a clip. You have changed. You are not the
:01:56. > :02:07.same hobbit is the one who left. I was going to tell you. I found
:02:08. > :02:26.something in the goblin tunnels. Found what? What did you find? My
:02:27. > :02:45.carriage. Good, that is good. You will need it. -- courage. I love all
:02:46. > :02:49.that stuff. I am hooked. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was long as
:02:50. > :02:59.well. The three movies together will add up to nine hours in total. It is
:03:00. > :03:04.not really just the Hobbit. There is loads of other material being
:03:05. > :03:10.brought in. There is so much else being thrown in as well. On the
:03:11. > :03:14.upside this moves on a pace. You remember the first movie. There was
:03:15. > :03:21.half an hour of sitting around, drinking tea and singing songs. With
:03:22. > :03:29.this movie they are off. They are into battles and chases. There are
:03:30. > :03:39.spectacular sights. We have elves and dwarfs and massive dragons. The
:03:40. > :03:43.problem with it, to some extent, I still can't help but think that
:03:44. > :03:50.reigning everything in would have made it tighter, more compact and
:03:51. > :03:53.more digestible. If you are a fan of the Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings you
:03:54. > :03:57.know what you will get. This requires you going in at the
:03:58. > :04:02.beginning and saying, we will be here for a long time and at the end
:04:03. > :04:09.there will be -- we will be nowhere near the end. Some of this looks to
:04:10. > :04:13.CGI. Every now and then you get them going over a natural landscape in
:04:14. > :04:17.New Zealand. You are so relieved to have the physical landscape, as
:04:18. > :04:24.opposed to yet another digitally created mountain. It does lack
:04:25. > :04:27.physicality. It suggests that by the time you get to the third instalment
:04:28. > :04:36.it might have all finally come into place. It is not in Lord Of The
:04:37. > :04:38.Rings territory yet. I do think the first Hobbit movie was
:04:39. > :04:45.disappointing. This is an improvement but there is some way to
:04:46. > :04:56.go in every sense of that. That is the problem with that. What about
:04:57. > :05:03.the innocence? It is shot in CinemaScope, black and white. A
:05:04. > :05:08.fantastic performance by Deborah Kerr. It is a film that does that
:05:09. > :05:13.brilliant thing of suggesting. There is always the suggestion something
:05:14. > :05:18.is happening in the end. There is a governess of two young children. She
:05:19. > :05:22.is convinced they are demonic or possessed. What the film does is
:05:23. > :05:29.constantly suggests all of this is in her mind to use the apparitions
:05:30. > :05:34.and ghosts. The natural sound in the film is terrific. It does what
:05:35. > :05:38.really great ghost story does. It gives you the sensation of a cold
:05:39. > :05:42.hand on the back of the neck. It is not about shouting blue and quiet
:05:43. > :05:48.followed by a loud bang. It is to do with a genuine sense of the uncanny
:05:49. > :05:54.you must have seen it. Some modern movies have followed the same
:05:55. > :06:02.scene. It is someone who is mentally ill and imagining all of this. What
:06:03. > :06:06.is horror? The crucial thing is it is about the uncanny. The eerie
:06:07. > :06:17.feeling of the uncanny and something being wrong. The sound of children
:06:18. > :06:21.laughing being terrifying. The innocent will make you anxious but
:06:22. > :06:27.it does not set out to shout do at you. It is about drawing you into
:06:28. > :06:38.its atmosphere. I really like the film. -- I really like the film,
:06:39. > :07:57.Fill The Void. Then what happens is tragedy strikes
:07:58. > :08:01.the family. The future she thought she would have is up in the air.
:08:02. > :08:04.There is a suggestion the only way she can heal the wounds of the
:08:05. > :08:11.family is to do something they wanted to do. To change marriage
:08:12. > :08:20.plans and put her own needs side. The really interesting thing about
:08:21. > :08:27.this is it is set in a very insular communities. The director compares
:08:28. > :08:33.it to the sort of society defined by Jane Austin. The women characters
:08:34. > :08:38.are living a very restrictive life but it is their stories. They drive
:08:39. > :08:43.the narrative. They are the focus of the drama. What is so interesting
:08:44. > :08:47.about this is, it is not a film about the breaking out of the
:08:48. > :08:53.community. Quite the opposite. It is about within the community. There is
:08:54. > :08:59.a traditional and ordered way of life. It shows within it a quite
:09:00. > :09:04.extraordinary degree of self well, self-determination. Each one of the
:09:05. > :09:14.women characters has a very powerful - quietly powerful - voice. It is
:09:15. > :09:19.filmed beautifully. The use of the music in the film is interesting.
:09:20. > :09:23.She plays the accordion. There is an underlying narrative which is played
:09:24. > :09:27.out all the way through the film. Some people may look at it and think
:09:28. > :09:31.it is too insular a view of the world. I thought it was fully
:09:32. > :09:37.sympathetic with its characters. You really care about them and believe
:09:38. > :09:42.in the situation. Very small gestures and nuances mean such a
:09:43. > :09:48.lot. Compare it to the raging dragons of the Hobbit. This is all
:09:49. > :09:52.to do with the smallest tilt of a head and a glance. I thought it was
:09:53. > :09:57.really enchanting. I thought it was very enriching, intelligent and
:09:58. > :10:05.smart. I would encourage people to see it. We are not going to do the
:10:06. > :10:13.best of the week, which is Nebraska or the DVD. Back in October, Mark
:10:14. > :10:25.commode and may have film review launched a short film competition
:10:26. > :10:28.asking for amateurs to produce a two-minute film. Here is a taster of
:10:29. > :11:19.what the finalist came up with. This is my garden! I will fight you
:11:20. > :11:58.for it. What an inventive lot! We had to say
:11:59. > :12:04.it had to be two minutes long and suitable for everyone. What was
:12:05. > :12:13.wonderful was how diverse you were. You had animation. You had live
:12:14. > :12:19.action, comedy. Some involved very young kids. It was really terrific.
:12:20. > :12:25.We had hundreds of entries. We have got it down to a short list. It was
:12:26. > :12:29.really impressive. Two minutes and it must be used certificate. It is
:12:30. > :12:37.astonishing what people came up with. It was really encouraging.
:12:38. > :12:42.What a great idea! You can watch all seven films in full on the website.
:12:43. > :12:46.The winner, as we mentioned, will be announced next week. Thank you for
:12:47. > :13:00.watching and goodbye. Good evening. A much quieter night
:13:01. > :13:05.tonight across the British Isles than last night. Gone is the cloud
:13:06. > :13:14.and rain. Also gone, some of that exceptional warmth. Last night, lows
:13:15. > :13:15.of seven degrees. Tonight, a few patches of fog. Still rain around
