:00:00. > :00:00.round matches and Saturday night's fight. Now on BBC News, it's time

:00:00. > :00:34.for The Film Review. Hello and welcome to the Film

:00:35. > :00:40.Review. Mark, what have you got? The story of man falling in love

:00:41. > :00:49.with an operating system. And the Lego movie. It has surprised all the

:00:50. > :00:56.critics. Myself included. And, Monuments Men, directed by and

:00:57. > :01:06.starring George Clooney. Who is quite interesting -- Her, but

:01:07. > :01:11.it is difficult to explain to people and take it seriously. The main

:01:12. > :01:17.character is emotionally withdrawn and at the end of a marriage, the

:01:18. > :01:21.divorce all but signed off. He has retreated from personal interaction

:01:22. > :01:27.and starts having an affair with an operating system on his computer,

:01:28. > :01:34.uploaded to help him sort out his office staff and diary. He opts for

:01:35. > :01:37.a female voice and the operating system seems to develop a

:01:38. > :01:43.personality that he becomes infatuated with. Turns out he is not

:01:44. > :01:50.the only one. I have a friend. The absurd thing is

:01:51. > :01:56.she is an operating system. She is totally amazing, smart, does not

:01:57. > :02:04.just see things in black and white. She is helping me explore it. We

:02:05. > :02:12.just bonded. Really quickly. That is weird, right? I am bonding with an

:02:13. > :02:19.operating system. I don't think so. The woman that I have been seeing,

:02:20. > :02:30.Samantha, I didn't tell you, but she is an OS. You are dating one? What

:02:31. > :02:35.is that like? I feel really close. When I talk to her, like she is with

:02:36. > :02:41.me. Are you falling in love with her?

:02:42. > :02:47.It is a smart, well-written script. But a couple of problems. Samantha

:02:48. > :02:52.Murray to and was doing the voice, but in postproduction they changed

:02:53. > :02:56.it to Scarlett Johansson. I wonder if something organic did not get

:02:57. > :02:59.lost in the shift. It is thought-provoking in beautiful to

:03:00. > :03:04.look at. The image is beautiful, beautifully shot. Absolutely

:03:05. > :03:19.gorgeous. Looks fabulous. The story is that the ghost -- the ghost

:03:20. > :03:34.writes. -- he. So his job is to create faux emotion. My problem with

:03:35. > :03:43.the film is that it is oddly emotionally detached. Is that the

:03:44. > :03:47.part of it? I think one of the strong points is that I enjoyed

:03:48. > :03:53.thinking back on it after I had seen it. You do think, what is a

:03:54. > :03:58.relationship? Is it a conversation? But whilst watching, like you, I

:03:59. > :04:12.thought it was a bit emotionally try. -- dry. And it is also about

:04:13. > :04:21.control. Yes, like the gag about an imaginary girlfriend who gets bored

:04:22. > :04:31.and Leeds! -- leaves. It is illegal. It works up here. -- cerebral. It

:04:32. > :04:35.felt a little bit too clever, as opposed to genuinely emotionally

:04:36. > :04:43.engaging. It just needed something more, for me.

:04:44. > :04:49.The Lego movie. We all went into this, thinking, it

:04:50. > :05:01.will be Pokemon the movie. But it looks fantastic. Made by the same

:05:02. > :05:07.people who brought us Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs which I compare

:05:08. > :05:14.to a David Lynch film. It is anarchic, the kids will live it, and

:05:15. > :05:23.the parents will love how smart, sassy, and edgy is the screenplay. I

:05:24. > :05:31.watched it with a bunch of stuff the critics. One of the gags is

:05:32. > :05:36.conformity. There is a song called, everything is awesome. Yet by the

:05:37. > :05:42.time you come out of the movie, you will be singing it, and only in a

:05:43. > :05:57.partly ironic way! I laughed all the way through. Just like Cloudy With A

:05:58. > :06:04.Chance Of Meatballs, plenty for kids and adults, what you want from a

:06:05. > :06:09.family movie. The funny thing is, with the reviews it has had, it is

:06:10. > :06:16.almost respectable for a middle-aged person to go and see. It is fine! I

:06:17. > :06:30.just love Lego! Across the board, everybody loves how funny it is.

:06:31. > :06:34.Monuments Men. Yes, inspired by a true story, so

:06:35. > :06:40.they have taken some liberties with it. A group of art lovers are sent,

:06:41. > :06:44.essentially, into the field of conflict, to protect works of art in

:06:45. > :06:56.danger of being plundered or destroyed by Li Na says. -- by the

:06:57. > :06:59.Nazis. Every single one of these paintings

:07:00. > :07:06.is a masterpiece heading for Germany. The Nazis are on the run

:07:07. > :07:12.but they are taking everything with them. We need to get as close to the

:07:13. > :07:25.front as we can. Preston, you head for Belgium, specifically Ghent.

:07:26. > :07:32.I'll go with Garfield. Now, you and John Claude get as close to Germany

:07:33. > :07:39.as you can. Why don't you take Sam from Newark, and I'll head up to my

:07:40. > :07:44.old stomping ground, Brugge? Looks like we're going to be together,

:07:45. > :07:51.buddy. A great cast.

:07:52. > :08:00.Yes. But a problem inherent with the poster, are they smiling? Are they

:08:01. > :08:08.stony faced, is it a great caper? The film cannot decide if it has got

:08:09. > :08:16.a comedic turn or if it is serious. Characters keep repeating the

:08:17. > :08:21.message, it is one of those movies in which words speak louder than

:08:22. > :08:27.actions. They call it a non-cynical movie. Post to Vietnam, war movies

:08:28. > :08:34.became cynical. But there is a thin line between cynicism and naivete.

:08:35. > :08:40.It is very uncertain and terribly episodic. A lot of individual

:08:41. > :08:44.performances to like, but terribly clunky. It constantly explains to

:08:45. > :08:48.you what is going on, what it means that it is going on, and just in

:08:49. > :08:54.case you missed it, let me explain what is going on again! It is not

:08:55. > :08:59.terrible, it is populist, it means something, but what it was not have

:09:00. > :09:08.is a lightness of touch and the smartness of reviews George Clooney

:09:09. > :09:15.efforts. Good Night Good Luck was terrific. And there was a very

:09:16. > :09:22.important theme, like there is here. Here, it is not so much laid on by a

:09:23. > :09:30.trowel is a great bulldozer. -- as a. Constant explanations for the

:09:31. > :09:44.hard of thinking. And the best of the week is Dallas Buyers Club, the

:09:45. > :09:47.best I have seen of the year. There are Oscar contenders and it is a

:09:48. > :09:53.well-made movie lifted shoulder high by two great actors. They are trying

:09:54. > :09:57.to bring a mainstream audience to a story which you might not

:09:58. > :10:01.automatically think suits. But the fact it is doing well no box office

:10:02. > :10:12.means it is playing a wide audience, and I am glad it is. And your pic on

:10:13. > :10:20.DVD, Blue Jasmine. Kate Lang should still has a very good chance on

:10:21. > :10:24.Oscar night. -- Cate Blanchette. It is not my favourite Woody Allen

:10:25. > :10:31.film. Not because it is not funny enough, it is very dry and wearing,

:10:32. > :10:36.but she is on camera almost all the way through and is fantastic. She

:10:37. > :10:51.does brilliantly. You compare that with her performance in Monuments

:10:52. > :10:55.Men and... A crazy accent. Yes, she is wondering how far she can push

:10:56. > :11:03.the accent before it becomes ironic, and the answer is not very far! But

:11:04. > :11:09.in Blue Jasmine she is terrific, it is a winner. That is all for this

:11:10. > :11:14.week. Thank you for watching and goodbye.
