:00:00. > :00:26.Hello and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News. To take us through this
:00:27. > :00:32.week's cinema releases, who are you going to call? Mark Kermode. We have
:00:33. > :00:38.a new Ghostbusters, which has been making headlines. We have Men and
:00:39. > :00:48.Chicken, which I think you decide to describe as a Danish comedy horror,
:00:49. > :00:52.about chickens. And Summertime. Ghostbusters, one of my favourite
:00:53. > :00:55.films of the 80s. As I'm sure you know, when it was announced that
:00:56. > :00:59.they were going to do a female lead a reboot internet was awash with
:01:00. > :01:05.trolls and people sang, you can't possibly, and a lot of hiding
:01:06. > :01:10.behind, actually, it is to do with defending to the original. I think
:01:11. > :01:14.it was barely concealed misogyny. Then, the film finally came out, it
:01:15. > :01:18.has been previewing for a few days now, and the response has been
:01:19. > :01:22.really to refit. Here in the UK it has got glowing reviews. I honestly
:01:23. > :01:27.think the truth is somewhere in between, that it is fine, it is not
:01:28. > :01:29.great, but it is certainly much better and certainly more
:01:30. > :01:34.crowdpleasing than any other haters would have wanted. I don't think it
:01:35. > :01:40.is quite the classic that some of its cheerleaders are saying. One
:01:41. > :01:45.academic is ashamed by the resurgence of a book she wrote about
:01:46. > :01:55.ghosts with Melissa McCarthy. She went to Melissa McCarthy and ended
:01:56. > :02:01.up getting involved in a resurgence of ghostbusting.
:02:02. > :02:08.I like to call this a ghost ship, it sucks in the ghost and neutralises
:02:09. > :02:20.it. Step up to bat and do what you are going to do. You truly scare me,
:02:21. > :02:31.I just want to let you know that. Oh! It is like Mardi Gras in their!
:02:32. > :02:45.It is a proton glove, it will maximise activity during fist to
:02:46. > :02:58.Specter combat. Give it a go. That was awesome! No, that is a deadly
:02:59. > :03:06.high-5. That was funny. You laugh three or four times. A proper comedy
:03:07. > :03:10.has to make you last six times. I think what it is is it is a very
:03:11. > :03:15.likeable remake that has a great affection for the original. Part of
:03:16. > :03:23.me thinks that with the kind of talent we have in the director, a
:03:24. > :03:26.great cast, a great screenwriter, there is so much potential but what
:03:27. > :03:30.troubles me somewhat is that structurally it is a bit ramshackle.
:03:31. > :03:35.It is a little bit all over the place in terms of the narrative that
:03:36. > :03:39.plays out is nothing like as disciplined as it needs to be. But
:03:40. > :03:43.it was really nice to see the film liking its subject matter so much. I
:03:44. > :03:50.saw it with an audience in which it was going down pretty well. It is
:03:51. > :03:55.not bridesmaids, it is not the really on the money soaring success
:03:56. > :04:00.that you want it to be, but when you look at the extraordinary talent
:04:01. > :04:04.involved in bringing it to the screen, perhaps my expectations were
:04:05. > :04:08.too high. I think it will do well, and I like it, but don't love it.
:04:09. > :04:12.Briefly, there has been some criticism of the way the
:04:13. > :04:16.African-American character is treated, kind of very 1980s rather
:04:17. > :04:21.than what you would expect in the 21st century. I think she is smart
:04:22. > :04:28.and funny enough in the role to neutralise the potential criticism.
:04:29. > :04:31.I understand that has been an issue, and I have to say when I was
:04:32. > :04:36.watching it I thought Leslie Jones' performance overcame any of those
:04:37. > :04:38.anxieties. There is a great turn by Chris Hemsworth as the beefcake
:04:39. > :04:42.receptionist who doesn't understand not only how to work a telephone,
:04:43. > :04:48.but what a telephone actually is. It is a nice role reversal. When I
:04:49. > :04:52.heard you were going to review Men and Chicken, I thought it was a film
:04:53. > :04:59.about Mendis. This is a very dark Danish comedy about two brothers,
:05:00. > :05:07.and at the start there is a videotape and he says he is not
:05:08. > :05:10.their real father. They end up going to a sanatorium where a group of
:05:11. > :05:14.half-brothers who appear to be the family they didn't know they had.
:05:15. > :05:18.They are living a very revoked and isolated existence. The local mayor
:05:19. > :05:22.says here on the island seems to be fairly basic. You think that might
:05:23. > :05:26.be a touchstone to the film itself. It is a strange balancing act
:05:27. > :05:34.between bat horror. As you watch this really strange twisted story
:05:35. > :05:39.playing out, with some absurdist comedy, on the other hand it hints
:05:40. > :05:44.towards Psycho and towards one flew over the cuckoos nest, and the
:05:45. > :05:53.island of Doctor Mariah, were all these strange happen. You genuinely
:05:54. > :05:56.feel quite uncertain of this jet black comedy. I thought it
:05:57. > :06:00.maintained that sense of uncomfortable as rather well. There
:06:01. > :06:06.was no point in the film in which I settled into it and thought I had
:06:07. > :06:10.the measure of it. I think that in itself is praising it, but it is not
:06:11. > :06:14.easy to watch, and it is at times very disturbing. May be the Best
:06:15. > :06:22.Film about Chechan we will see all summer! I think that is going on the
:06:23. > :06:28.poster. Summertime. Yes, I thought this was a great film. It is set in
:06:29. > :06:35.early 70s France, Delphine is a young woman growing up on a rural
:06:36. > :06:42.farm, she moves to a city to change her life, where she comes across a
:06:43. > :06:45.feminist protest group who she first meets as they run through the
:06:46. > :07:39.streets giving grouping meant a taste of their own medicine.
:07:40. > :07:47.The vibrancy from that clip, what happens is they now develop a
:07:48. > :07:51.relationship initially based on politics but then on passion.
:07:52. > :07:54.Delphine is then called back to the farm on which she grew up, the
:07:55. > :07:59.question is can this love affair survive that move? What I really
:08:00. > :08:01.like about the film, firstly I completely believe in the
:08:02. > :08:05.characters. I thought they were immersed in the roles and I believed
:08:06. > :08:10.in them. Secondly it has a really good indication of that time, the
:08:11. > :08:15.heady politics and also the dawning of the relationship, which I thought
:08:16. > :08:24.worked really well. Visually it has a bucolic beauty of something
:08:25. > :08:31.Legendre Florette, but also the frankness. It was a really well told
:08:32. > :08:35.drama about a relationship that we absolutely believe in, it was a
:08:36. > :08:40.personal project and I was engaged in the characters. Many parts were
:08:41. > :08:43.very funny and touching, and it had real heart. I liked it very much. I
:08:44. > :08:49.haven't seen it but I wonder whether the film Carroll, and some of the
:08:50. > :08:54.others you mentioned, give a frame of reference and whether we have
:08:55. > :08:56.seen some of that. Possibly, but for me the real reference point is the
:08:57. > :09:02.director's previous work. In the past she has dealt with the subject
:09:03. > :09:08.of overwhelming passion in the way in which it can be life changing.
:09:09. > :09:11.What I saw from it was just a story about two people in a particular
:09:12. > :09:17.circumstance whose lives you completely believe in, whose lives
:09:18. > :09:22.you are invested in, and his fate you genuinely care about. It is like
:09:23. > :09:25.what Roger Ebert used to say about movies, you have to care about the
:09:26. > :09:31.characters and in this case are really did. Notes on Blindness is
:09:32. > :09:37.something you care about, and use their best DVD of the week?
:09:38. > :09:44.Absolutely superb, a wonderful evocation of an account of losing
:09:45. > :09:49.your site. It is a brilliant mix of drama and documentary. Thoroughly
:09:50. > :09:52.enjoyable movie. I'm thrilled to see this has been plain to packed out
:09:53. > :09:56.cinemas. I have seen screenings on the south bank where they have been
:09:57. > :10:00.turning people away. It is so great to see a film is ambitious and
:10:01. > :10:07.adventurous and as important as this touring such an audience. High-Rise,
:10:08. > :10:11.to say it divides opinion, it certainly divides opinion. It was
:10:12. > :10:17.supposedly unfilmable. Yes, and a novel they were trying to filter
:10:18. > :10:21.decades, and I think Ben Wheatley has done to reject adaptation, and a
:10:22. > :10:25.horrific performance by Tom Hiddleston in the lead role. The
:10:26. > :10:31.real genius is that what they have done is take a story that has passed
:10:32. > :10:36.setting, so a story about the present set in an alternative past
:10:37. > :10:40.looking at the future. It is hard to follow that but you are absolutely
:10:41. > :10:48.right. I thought it looked beautiful and was well played, it is smart and
:10:49. > :10:55.intelligent and very well scripted, and plaudits to the screenwriter who
:10:56. > :10:57.did such a good job of adapting and apparently unfilmable novel stop
:10:58. > :11:02.white by JG Ballard. Yes, I didn't say that. We know about
:11:03. > :11:09.screenwriters and authors, they never get the proper credit they
:11:10. > :11:13.deserve. You will find more news and reviews from across the BBC online.
:11:14. > :11:17.You can watch our previous shows on iPlayer. Thank you for watching,
:11:18. > :11:25.enjoy the movies.
