:00:20. > :00:30.Welcome to the Film Review on BBC News. We are joined by Anna Smith.
:00:31. > :00:34.What do we have this week? First of all, we are going to the south of
:00:35. > :00:44.France for The Love Punch, featuring Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson. On
:00:45. > :00:48.screen for the first time together. The next film is called Locke. It is
:00:49. > :00:54.a character`driven drama featuring Tom Hardy. He is driving from
:00:55. > :00:59.Birmingham to London. It is more interesting than it sounds! Finally,
:01:00. > :01:09.a witty drama about a punk band in the 1980s, called We Are The Best.
:01:10. > :01:16.Let's start with The Love Punch. A pretty impressive cast, how does it
:01:17. > :01:21.work out as a film? A fantastic cast. These two play and divorced
:01:22. > :01:26.couple, and it is great to see them at loggerheads, but there is still a
:01:27. > :01:29.spark between them. They are sent off to the south of France for a
:01:30. > :01:35.jewellery heist, which is not really explained. Some of the dialogue is a
:01:36. > :01:49.plot. Let's have a look. You kept plot. Let's have a look. You kept
:01:50. > :01:58.your bag. Yes, they lasted quite well, really. Better than us. They
:01:59. > :02:14.came with a guarantee. Bonsoir! Bonsoir. We would like two rooms.
:02:15. > :02:25.Passports, please. Mrs Jones. And Mr Jones. And you want two rooms? You
:02:26. > :02:32.are brother and sister? We're divorced, but I kept his name. Why
:02:33. > :02:35.is that? Because it has been my name as well for a long time, and the
:02:36. > :02:40.children. You are holidaying together, to see if perhaps the
:02:41. > :02:46.flame still burns? Yes. Why not? The flame is out, snuffed, gone. We are
:02:47. > :02:50.in Paris, you never know. I see what you mean. You are
:02:51. > :02:55.laughing, but not necessarily for the right reasons. They are terrific
:02:56. > :02:59.together, they are wonderful, and they can make most lines come to
:03:00. > :03:03.life. When you cut to a less experienced actor it is a bit
:03:04. > :03:11.creaky. It worked quite well with the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. You
:03:12. > :03:14.played to the sympathies of the older crowd. Saying, here is the
:03:15. > :03:19.promise of escape and glamour in foreign climes. This is a bit
:03:20. > :03:22.clumsy. You mentioned Marigold Hotel, and when I read the synopsis
:03:23. > :03:26.earlier that was the first film that came into my mind. I think that was
:03:27. > :03:37.much more successful, this is a bit amateurish. It is not as good as the
:03:38. > :03:42.director's last film. Last Chance Harvey. If you are in a forgiving
:03:43. > :03:46.mood and you're a big fan of the cast, it will pass the time. What
:03:47. > :03:49.about the believability of the characters? If you are not convinced
:03:50. > :03:52.by the characters they are betraying, it is hard to stick with,
:03:53. > :03:55.isn't it? Somehow, they managed to make the central pair believable.
:03:56. > :04:06.The French stereotypes are just that, they are just stereotypes.
:04:07. > :04:09.Celia Imrie and Timothy Spall come in, pretending to play comedy
:04:10. > :04:12.Texans, it is quite preposterous. They are running around on the
:04:13. > :04:19.beach, it is all very silly. Is it slightly coarse in places? There is
:04:20. > :04:22.a strange segment where it gets coarse, where they are Skyping their
:04:23. > :04:25.son, and his flatmate is running around in the background doing silly
:04:26. > :04:31.things, and it is all quite incongruous. I don't know why it is
:04:32. > :04:35.there! We are lukewarm on that. Very lukewarm.
:04:36. > :04:39.Let's talk about Locke. It sounds fascinating. Explain how this works.
:04:40. > :04:54.It is a 1`man show, and the character is Ivan Locke. Played by
:04:55. > :04:58.Tom Hardy. He is a man with a beard and a Welsh accent, and he is
:04:59. > :05:02.basically having the worst day of his life. He has just found out that
:05:03. > :05:05.a woman who he had a one night stand with is about to go into labour, he
:05:06. > :05:09.neglected to tell his wife and children that this has happened, and
:05:10. > :05:12.he hasn't told his boss that he is in this situation, and it is a very
:05:13. > :05:16.intense car journey where he has lots of people on the phone. His
:05:17. > :05:18.wife, his boss. And the maternity hospital. There is a lot of dark
:05:19. > :05:22.comedy. Everything in his life is going completely crazy, but he puts
:05:23. > :05:25.in a spectacular performance. You can see the worry flickering over
:05:26. > :05:29.this otherwise very composed man's face as he contemplates the
:05:30. > :05:36.destruction of his life. It is intense. Do you see anyone other
:05:37. > :05:44.than him? It is literally just him. At the press screening, the
:05:45. > :05:48.publicist said that at the beginning. You need to know, this is
:05:49. > :05:51.just Tom Hardy. You hear the voices of his family, played by well`known
:05:52. > :05:54.actors, but it is like a radio play, where you are imagining what is
:05:55. > :05:58.happening offscreen. When you have the muffled sobbing of his family.
:05:59. > :06:01.It is dark stuff. It is very good. Presumably, the emotional intensity
:06:02. > :06:09.added by the fact that he is by definition in this very enclosed
:06:10. > :06:12.space. It is quite claustrophobic. It reminds me of the movie Buried.
:06:13. > :06:16.Which was a man being buried alive, almost suffocating. Worth seeing,
:06:17. > :06:25.you think? Yes. What about We Are The Best? This is
:06:26. > :06:29.my favourite film of the week, and possibly the year so far. This is
:06:30. > :06:37.about a couple of Swedish schoolgirls, and they decide they
:06:38. > :07:38.want to form a punk band. Let's have a look at the clip.
:07:39. > :07:42.Without giving too much away, give us a sense of how the story
:07:43. > :07:45.develops. It is not so much about stories than character. They form a
:07:46. > :07:49.punk band, they decide they are going to show the boys what for, and
:07:50. > :07:53.they recruit a girl who is a very sensible Christian girl with very
:07:54. > :07:56.long hair, they try to get her to cut her hair and join in. It is a
:07:57. > :07:59.culture clash between her and this other girl. The joy of being happy,
:08:00. > :08:03.about being different, and that makes it sound a bit corny, but it
:08:04. > :08:06.is very well handled by the director. He has done many other
:08:07. > :08:10.things, like Together and Show Me Love. There is a suggestion that the
:08:11. > :08:14.director is someone who is returning to his roots, all the roots that a
:08:15. > :08:19.lot of film admirers would have appreciated. He has gone back to his
:08:20. > :08:25.happy state, because this is a feelgood film. Whether you would
:08:26. > :08:28.normally watch subtitled films or not, it is about the fun of being
:08:29. > :08:33.young, of doing something different, and these girls are just so full of
:08:34. > :08:37.life. I would recommend it. They can't even play their instruments,
:08:38. > :08:43.it is a very funny film. It is full of charm, and I think it is one of
:08:44. > :08:49.his best films. The young actors, clearly you are relying on the
:08:50. > :08:52.skills of them. They are fantastic, a few of them have virtually no
:08:53. > :08:56.experience, but it fills you with confidence when you are watching it.
:08:57. > :09:03.It is very authentic. Their music is not much good, but they have a
:09:04. > :09:07.wonderful soundtrack. Obviously it has subtitles, sometimes, as we
:09:08. > :09:11.know, people are put off by that. In this context how do they shape up? I
:09:12. > :09:14.know what you mean, sometimes you feel it is not translating very
:09:15. > :09:17.well. These are young people speaking in fairly simplistic terms,
:09:18. > :09:27.and they are talking about an area we all remember. They are talking
:09:28. > :09:30.about the 80s, and you can see that there is the shifting times, some
:09:31. > :09:34.moving with it differently than others. I could definitely relate to
:09:35. > :09:38.a lot of it. Of the three, that is your favourite. Let's talk about the
:09:39. > :09:53.favourite for you that is out there at the moment. My favourite is Grand
:09:54. > :09:57.Budapest Hotel, by Wes Anderson, I think it is a wonderful screwball
:09:58. > :10:01.comedy. This is from a hotel that is really stuck in its time, and as
:10:02. > :10:07.usual, from Wes Anderson films, it is like a chocolate box. There is so
:10:08. > :10:16.much colour and composition, and how it all looks. Absolutely, everything
:10:17. > :10:24.is symmetrical. There is so much detail. There is also great comedy,
:10:25. > :10:27.I think if you found some of Wes Anderson's things at bit more
:10:28. > :10:32.pretentious, you might find this more accessible. Ralph Fiennes is in
:10:33. > :10:40.it, and a lot about how he gets on with the lobby boy. There is a plot
:10:41. > :10:44.about a stolen painting, which he is accused of stealing by the family of
:10:45. > :10:47.a former lover, so there is a lot of running around in Gothic garb, it
:10:48. > :10:54.speeds up and gets faster and faster. It is a fun film. That is
:10:55. > :11:00.the best one to go and see if you haven't. If you have missed out and
:11:01. > :11:09.it is DVD time watched you pick? Nebraska, which was nominated for
:11:10. > :11:15.seven Oscars. He has good form when it comes to road trips, this is
:11:16. > :11:18.another road trip movie. Bruce Dern is an older gentleman, he likes a
:11:19. > :11:25.drink, and he goes on a road trip with his son. He has decided he has
:11:26. > :11:28.won $1 million, won't be told otherwise, won't be told it is a
:11:29. > :11:31.scam from a magazine, so his son reluctantly goes along, and it takes
:11:32. > :11:34.place with a dash of cynicism. You mentioned road trips. There is
:11:35. > :11:40.something about road trips that work. There is a lot of opportunity
:11:41. > :11:46.for great landscapes. This is black and white, interestingly. Also
:11:47. > :11:50.different characters. They drop in on lots of old friends and family,
:11:51. > :11:52.who actually think this guy has won $1 million. There is an interesting
:11:53. > :11:59.dynamic between how the perception of someone being wealthy changes the
:12:00. > :12:03.relationship. You said it came close to Oscars? Very close, it is a shame
:12:04. > :12:08.it didn't get any, but it was very close. It works at home on a DVD.
:12:09. > :12:20.Definitely. Before we go, you will find more film news and reviews from
:12:21. > :12:38.our critics on the website. For now, goodbye.
:12:39. > :12:39.A couple of minutes until Easter day, it
