:00:00. > :00:00.day one of the second and decisive test`macro. That is coming up at
:00:00. > :00:21.6:30pm. Now on BBC News, it is time for The Film Review.
:00:22. > :00:30.Hello. Welcome to The Film Review. Here is Mark Kermode. What do we
:00:31. > :00:36.have this week? I am going to jump in, Jersey Boys. I am looking
:00:37. > :00:43.forward to this. We have got coming up, as you say, Jersey Boys. I know
:00:44. > :00:51.you have seen the stage musical and loved it. Then we have Chinese
:00:52. > :00:59.Puzzle, the third instalment of the ongoing international romance. And 3
:01:00. > :01:09.Days to Kill. Kevin Costner is back in action. Jersey Boys, you loved
:01:10. > :01:15.the stage musical. I adored it. As apparently did everyone who saw it.
:01:16. > :01:19.The minute the songs are on, they are up and dancing. This is an
:01:20. > :01:26.adaptation of the story of the four seasons directed on`screen by Clint
:01:27. > :01:30.Eastwood. He has directed the Charlie Parker biopic in the past.
:01:31. > :01:34.Clint Eastwood, rather than seeing it as a musical, he seems to see it
:01:35. > :01:38.more as a drama about four Street kids, some of whom who have seen the
:01:39. > :01:43.inside of the slammer. They have vague connections with characters
:01:44. > :01:49.who perhaps you would see in a movie like Goodfellas. Whilst there are
:01:50. > :01:51.the musical numbers, Clint Eastwood is more interested in the
:01:52. > :01:58.interaction between the characters and their background. Here is a
:01:59. > :02:04.clip. This is crazy. We have got to find a club. Want we want is a
:02:05. > :02:12.record contract. You cannot even booked a lousy bowling alley. You
:02:13. > :02:29.are in this group. Which one? Who are we going to be next, Tommy?
:02:30. > :02:41.Frankie. What? It is a sign, Tommy! I still like the four Felons. They
:02:42. > :02:47.are singing these close harmonies, voices of angels. There is a big
:02:48. > :02:51.thing of rock 'n' roll of people adopting an outlaw persona. In the
:02:52. > :02:55.biopic of Johnny Cash, his dad said, now you will not have to work so
:02:56. > :03:00.hard to make people think you have been to prison, after he has been
:03:01. > :03:06.arrested. They are making clean cut records in this film. I like the
:03:07. > :03:10.fact print is to ward is seeing it like a Goodfellas inflected story.
:03:11. > :03:16.What you lack is the love of the music `` I like the fact that Clint
:03:17. > :03:22.Eastwood is seeing it. You have to have an ear for that kind of bubble
:03:23. > :03:25.gum pop. I do. If you listen to the way those songs are used in other
:03:26. > :03:31.films, they really jump off the screen. Here, strangely enough, the
:03:32. > :03:37.musical numbers... It is a strange thing to say, but they are slightly
:03:38. > :03:40.flat. The drama is the interesting thing, the closeness to the
:03:41. > :03:45.underworld characters, the fact that they have dragged themselves up by
:03:46. > :03:48.their bootstraps. He is less interested in the records
:03:49. > :03:54.themselves. What really sold the stage show was how much people love
:03:55. > :04:00.seeing the numbers performed live. It is solid. It is not as special as
:04:01. > :04:07.perhaps it ought to be. It is however solid. Right. Now, Chinese
:04:08. > :04:13.Puzzle. It is the third instalment in this ongoing romance.
:04:14. > :04:27.Essentially, this works anyway before sunrise, Before Sunset Before
:04:28. > :04:33.Midnight. This time the action plays out in New York, Chinatown, he has
:04:34. > :04:37.been separated from his long`term partner and he wants to Beano his
:04:38. > :04:43.kids. He is helping a lesbian couple to have a child. `` he wants to be
:04:44. > :04:49.near. It is complicated, as he says. The film itself however is very
:04:50. > :04:53.light. Cappuccino philosophy. That said, it is rather charming. These
:04:54. > :04:56.characters have been around for a long time and they are well played.
:04:57. > :05:01.It has a lot of heart. It does not have a lot of depth despite the
:05:02. > :05:06.weird cameos from philosophers who wander in in a Woody Allen like
:05:07. > :05:14.weight to make philosophical jokes. Light, frothy, fun. Do you have to
:05:15. > :05:21.have seen the others? No. You can jump in. Despite the fact he says it
:05:22. > :05:27.is complicated, it is not that complicated. Kevin Costner, 3 Days
:05:28. > :05:31.to Kill. Do I know about this film a bit without having seen it? Sadly, I
:05:32. > :05:37.have been a Kevin Costner film in the past... This is directed by the
:05:38. > :05:43.man who directed Charlie's Angels. And also Terminator Salvation. He is
:05:44. > :05:48.a terrible director. Airheaded candy floss of the highest order. The
:05:49. > :05:51.story is Kevin Costner is a CIA hit man who has been diagnosed with a
:05:52. > :05:56.terminal illness, terminal cancer, and he goes to Paris in order to
:05:57. > :05:59.reconcile himself with his wife and daughter who we need to teach to
:06:00. > :06:05.ride a bicycle. He is contacted by an agent who tells him... Stick with
:06:06. > :06:09.me. She has a special new chemical that will make him better possibly
:06:10. > :06:25.if he killed a bunch of people for her. Really. Here is a clip.
:06:26. > :06:32.I can see you do not believe in the customary 48 hour window between
:06:33. > :06:40.pills. You only have three days left. `` between kills. I am not
:06:41. > :06:45.getting into your car. Not before I get a second opinion on whatever it
:06:46. > :06:51.was you gave me. I told you it was kosher. Now it is not. The manual
:06:52. > :06:57.says, if I cannot keep my heart rate low, the chip will act like a
:06:58. > :07:04.hallucinogenic. Keep your heart rate low. That is kind of hard with the
:07:05. > :07:11.job you have me doing. Get in the car. You noticed the scarf he was
:07:12. > :07:15.wearing, very important. He has sat there and thought, I am playing a
:07:16. > :07:19.conflicted character. I have got to kill a bunch of people. I am not
:07:20. > :07:23.making this up. The way he demonstrates this conflict in his
:07:24. > :07:28.life is he wears the scarf through the film to the point that you are
:07:29. > :07:40.transfixed by a tossed stop, the torture scenes. It is so empty and
:07:41. > :07:46.airheaded, it makes things like Waterworld seem profound. Kevin
:07:47. > :07:50.Costner doing sub Liam Neeson. Kevin Costner has done great work in the
:07:51. > :07:55.past. People make jokes about him. But he was a great screen presence.
:07:56. > :07:59.This is him attempting to turn himself into a big action star. The
:08:00. > :08:03.problem is that it is so stupid. Stupid in a way that it is kind of
:08:04. > :08:07.insulting. You are thinking, I am actually cross with this movie is
:08:08. > :08:11.for imagining for three seconds that I would buy into any of this. It is
:08:12. > :08:19.a real shame but it is really bad. Right. OK for top was likely?
:08:20. > :08:24.Crystal clear. He was very unshaven and so on but he looked extremely
:08:25. > :08:33.well. Exactly. Not like someone who had three days to live. Not like a
:08:34. > :08:38.Breaking Bad central figure. Best at question at I think Belle is the
:08:39. > :08:43.best movie out. It is terrific. `` best movie out? It is about the end
:08:44. > :08:49.of the slave trade and race relations but it is dressed up as a
:08:50. > :08:54.costume drama. A society romance. What the director has done is to
:08:55. > :08:59.take this very potent story and turn it into something that is very
:09:00. > :09:06.mainstream, very multiplex Frannie `` very important story. You could
:09:07. > :09:09.enjoy it like you would enjoy an adaptation of a Jane Austen novel.
:09:10. > :09:16.Beautifully directed. Very well played. A very fine film indeed.
:09:17. > :09:23.Well received. The reviews have been terrific. In some places in America
:09:24. > :09:30.it has outsold these Spiderman movie. Best DVD? This is Her, the
:09:31. > :09:34.Spike Jonze movie. A man falls in love with his computer operating
:09:35. > :09:38.system. When it came out, I was uncertain about it. It felt very
:09:39. > :09:42.clinical, like it did not have much emotional engagement. I want to
:09:43. > :09:46.watch it again because it looked absolutely beautiful and it is an
:09:47. > :09:49.interesting idea about artificial intelligence and the way in which
:09:50. > :09:53.people fake emotions. I am choosing this because I want to go back and
:09:54. > :09:57.give it a second go. I am sure it is one of those things that improves.
:09:58. > :10:01.The first time, I felt it was very cold. Maybe that is deliberate. If
:10:02. > :10:04.you are making a movie about someone who falls in love with a computer,
:10:05. > :10:09.maybe it is meant to be cold. I think it needs a second chance. Do
:10:10. > :10:14.you think in the short time when it was made and now, a lot of the
:10:15. > :10:21.things it talks about seem to be coming rushing towards us?
:10:22. > :10:25.Interactions with machinery... The story is as old as the hills.
:10:26. > :10:33.Science`fiction is always about people falling in love with their
:10:34. > :10:37.computers. There are episodes of TV series in which they do that basic
:10:38. > :10:43.idea. People make jokes about falling in love with their Saturn
:10:44. > :10:51.haves. `` satellite navigation. It wants to be more with that `` more
:10:52. > :11:02.than that. Thank you, as ever. You will find more film news and reviews
:11:03. > :11:04.from Mark on his BBC blog. That is it for this week. Thank you for
:11:05. > :11:21.watching. Goodbye. The weather is going to slowly
:11:22. > :11:26.change next week. Unusually, the weekend looks great. There will be a
:11:27. > :11:31.lot of dry weather around, no rain to speak of really. Good sunny
:11:32. > :11:32.spells too. It should feel pleasantly warm. All quiet at the
:11:33. > :11:33.moment
