:00:00. > :00:00.well. That is all on Sportsday at 6. 30pm with me Olly Foster. Now on BBC

:00:00. > :00:22.News it's time for The Film Review. Hello and welcome to the Film Review

:00:23. > :00:26.on BBC News. To take us through this week's cinema's releases, Mark

:00:27. > :00:32.Kermode. What do we have? A mixed batch we have American Hustle.

:00:33. > :00:37.Already got seven Golden Globe nominations. Leading the awards

:00:38. > :00:43.pack. We have Walking with Dinosaurs, the 3D movie which does

:00:44. > :00:52.what it sayses on the tin. It is in 3D and we walk with dinosaurs. And

:00:53. > :00:57.after nine years, Ron Burgundy is back in Anchorman 2 - the The Legend

:00:58. > :01:15.Continues. A very interesting film based on the

:01:16. > :01:19.scam - the FBI were Attempting to ensneer public officials. They came

:01:20. > :01:24.up with a conman and came up with a plot. What we have in this is the

:01:25. > :01:30.retaling of a story which says, some of what you are about to see, some

:01:31. > :01:34.actually happened. It is interesting that you check out the real story.

:01:35. > :01:38.More is true than perhaps you would expect. We have terrific

:01:39. > :01:44.performances. We have Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and

:01:45. > :01:49.they are all characters who are all pretending in some way or other to

:01:50. > :01:54.be other people. Some are FBI, some wives, some politicians. They are

:01:55. > :01:58.all basically living in a world in which is the face they show to the

:01:59. > :02:08.world and the one in their private lives and they all have extravagant

:02:09. > :02:12.haircuts. Here's a clip. Historically the best perfumes in

:02:13. > :02:19.the world are laced with something... You cannot get enough

:02:20. > :02:28.of that smell! Couldn't get enough! Smell her nails. Sweet and sour.

:02:29. > :02:33.Rotten and delicious. Smells like flowers. You know what it is for me

:02:34. > :02:39.- it is coriander for me. You can't get enough - that is what hooks you.

:02:40. > :02:48.He always comes back for it. I can't get enough!

:02:49. > :02:56.So nice! In five, four, three, two, one...

:02:57. > :03:02.Can me and the man talk about business here?

:03:03. > :03:10.Great hair styles but a great script. When it was submitted to the

:03:11. > :03:15.Golden Globes, it was submitted as a drama. There is debate - is it a

:03:16. > :03:20.comedy or a drama which has comedy overturns. It is a caper movie. It

:03:21. > :03:25.is more dramatic I is wrong just to call it a -- it is wrong just to

:03:26. > :03:29.call it a comedy. You get fantastic performances. Christian Bale doing

:03:30. > :03:35.that thing about immersing himself in a role. There's an opening

:03:36. > :03:40.sequence, in which he's seen applying his wig. It involves glue,

:03:41. > :03:45.a hair appliance. Hair is a big thing all the way through. We see

:03:46. > :03:50.almost every member of the cast in rollers at some point. The question

:03:51. > :03:58.is this - alongside the great performances, Amy Adams is terrific

:03:59. > :04:03.- it owes more to Good Fellas and to Last Days of Disco. It is about the

:04:04. > :04:08.look, all about the clothes. If it is going to be dramatically

:04:09. > :04:12.successful, the question is, is there anything underneath it? On

:04:13. > :04:18.first viewing, it was about surface. What a glittery, what an attractive

:04:19. > :04:29.and enticing surface it was. It is really good fun. I am not sure it

:04:30. > :04:36.has the heart of Is Silver Linings Play Book. It was a broad broadly

:04:37. > :04:39.funny story - it was dealing with heartbreak and tragedy and this is

:04:40. > :04:42.sort of attempting to do the same thing. On a visual level it is

:04:43. > :04:47.extraordinary. On a performance level it is very, very good. I

:04:48. > :04:52.wonder in the end whether it has enough heart and soul. It may be it

:04:53. > :04:55.takes a few viewings to find that. Very much like the lifestyle it

:04:56. > :05:00.portrays, it was great to look at and great to be in the presence of

:05:01. > :05:05.it. I don't know that it lasts much longer than that. Walking dinosaurs

:05:06. > :05:14.- I remember that from the BBC. It was terrific. I don't know if I want

:05:15. > :05:22.to pay to go and see it. It is What we have is very - well rendered 3 D,

:05:23. > :05:29.great big reptiles, but with cute voices. This is a story of a young

:05:30. > :05:35.dinosaur called Patchy. He's not got to be eaten or trampled. He falls in

:05:36. > :05:41.love, has friendships I is very kid-friendly. We have information

:05:42. > :05:44.coming up saying what th is the name of the dinosaur. Behind it all you

:05:45. > :05:50.feel there is some educational remit. It was very good to look at.

:05:51. > :05:55.It is amazing how we have become bla say about the idea of seeing

:05:56. > :06:01.dinosaurs on screen. It looked very good. If you compare it to Moshi

:06:02. > :06:05.Monsters, going out for the children - believe me, if you are a parent

:06:06. > :06:10.and you take your kids to see something - this is a walk in the

:06:11. > :06:14.park. It is not Earth-shattering, but perfectly fine. And Ron

:06:15. > :06:24.Burgundy, he was wonderful, I think. Yes. It was nine years ago. When it

:06:25. > :06:29.was first made took $90 million worldwide. The story is Ron Burgundy

:06:30. > :06:35.is enlisted as one of the anchormen on a 24-hour News Channel. This

:06:36. > :06:40.sounds to him like the most stupid idea that anyone has had... Until he

:06:41. > :06:49.gets there. Well to GNN. Here is Curtis

:06:50. > :06:53.Nightfish and the best in the biz - Jack!

:06:54. > :06:59.Oh, my God! He's absolutely magnificent. I bet his poop smells

:07:00. > :07:05.like sandal wood! Can I help you? What do you mean?

:07:06. > :07:15.You are staring at me. Do you want my autograph? No. He was explaining

:07:16. > :07:19.who you were. I was looking at you. Ha-ro-ha-ro-ro!

:07:20. > :07:24.Is that what I sound like when I talk?

:07:25. > :07:30.You were laughing a lot. I laughed at the first one. I laughed a lot. I

:07:31. > :07:34.know I'll laugh at it. When the first one came out I was not won

:07:35. > :07:40.over by it. I thought it was all right. It was a slow burner. People

:07:41. > :07:45.started to love it on DVD and it become very quotable. They talk

:07:46. > :07:51.about a broad way musical. It was on and off and the stud yes said it --

:07:52. > :07:59.studio said it cost too much. It is about the birth of rolling news. In

:08:00. > :08:02.America, live car chases, silly pet stories and patriotism will outsell

:08:03. > :08:06.anything else. There is a serious outpinning about what has happened

:08:07. > :08:11.to news in the wake of 24-hour rolling news. The problem is, on top

:08:12. > :08:15.of that, the gags are kind of old hat. There is a very ill-judged,

:08:16. > :08:19.interracial thing about Ron not being able to deal with African

:08:20. > :08:24.Americans, which is dragged out. You think it is a little thing, but it

:08:25. > :08:28.carries on. They have a reprise of the street fight from the first - it

:08:29. > :08:34.is bigger, louder and more celebrities in it. When you start to

:08:35. > :08:38.throw celebrity cameos into it, it means you have lost confidence in

:08:39. > :08:42.it. The first - people were not already expecting a whole bunch.

:08:43. > :08:45.When I sat in the preview theatre, there were people expecting to be

:08:46. > :08:50.knocked out by it and they weren't. It is not terrible, by any means. It

:08:51. > :08:54.is very very average. It's not as funny as it needs to be by a long

:08:55. > :08:59.way. The interesting thing is the underpinning, the satirical

:09:00. > :09:02.underpinning about rolling news, about what is happening in America,

:09:03. > :09:06.about entertaining taking over from news - the gags are not funny

:09:07. > :09:14.enough. I do think the sort of take on

:09:15. > :09:20.rolling news and particularly the if it bleeds it leads culture - which

:09:21. > :09:27.in some American T V stations is strong. Car chasesle - it may not be

:09:28. > :09:34.an -- char chases. I was impressed by the thread. It is the old Woody

:09:35. > :09:39.Allen think - insufficient laughter is grounds for divorce.

:09:40. > :09:53.Now back in October, 5 Live's Kermode and asked viewer to make a

:09:54. > :09:56.two-minute short film. A winner has been chosen. We will speak to the

:09:57. > :09:59.winner live in the studio in a moment. Let's look at the winning

:10:00. > :11:56.entry. That was terrific. With us is the

:11:57. > :12:00.winning director. You've got your 5 Live trophy, with I is clearly no

:12:01. > :12:06.expense has been spared to reward you for your efforts. Was that quite

:12:07. > :12:12.tricky to make? It was quite tricky, yes. They are all practical effects.

:12:13. > :12:18.We used string and then we had a hairdryer to blow it around. Yes,

:12:19. > :12:23.various techniques were used. The thing that impressed me is that is

:12:24. > :12:27.two minutes. Shorter is, can be tricky, can't it? It can. The

:12:28. > :12:32.original film was three minutes. My brother, who composed the music as

:12:33. > :12:35.well, kept saying you have to cut it down to under two minutes.

:12:36. > :12:40.Eventually we got there. Were you impressed? I was. The entries

:12:41. > :12:45.overall were good. We had hundreds of entries T two rules were, it had

:12:46. > :12:51.to be two minutes or under. It had to qualify for a U certificate -

:12:52. > :12:58.meaning suitable for all. Nothing likely to harm or offend. We had

:12:59. > :13:03.comedies, we had animation, action movies. What we were looking for was

:13:04. > :13:08.something that surprised us. It is a lovely story. It is well told. The

:13:09. > :13:11.effects that it is done in camera, meaning you are not going for

:13:12. > :13:17.special effects afterwards - you are doing it all there. It was

:13:18. > :13:23.mechanical. I think you yourself have drawn comparisons that that

:13:24. > :13:28.single idea was well executed. It is hard to get right. We were very

:13:29. > :13:32.impressed by the entries and very impressed with the winner. Are you

:13:33. > :13:38.going to do other stuff? I am hoping to become a film maker. I have done

:13:39. > :13:43.some short documentaries. One other very short narrative film. I would

:13:44. > :13:48.like to make films for the cinema if that is possible. You now have an

:13:49. > :13:53.audience. It is quite good. What do you actually do? Do you have a day

:13:54. > :13:58.job? I work part-time for my dad's company. It is kind of like a gap

:13:59. > :14:03.year for me. I hope to go to a film school next year. Which is tricky.

:14:04. > :14:08.It can be difficult to get into. A terrific film. Thank you.

:14:09. > :14:14.And a reminder before we go - you will find more film news on Kermode

:14:15. > :14:18.Uncut. Our thanks to Mark and to Phillip.

:14:19. > :14:20.That is it for this week. Thanks for watching and merry Christmas.

:14:21. > :14:36.Goodbye. Hello. More wet and windy weather is

:14:37. > :14:42.heading our way. Not just tonight, but even in the raun-up to

:14:43. > :14:46.Christmas. -- run-up to Christmas. Further strong and gusty winds

:14:47. > :14:50.likely. Travel problems are anticipated. If you are travelling

:14:51. > :14:53.over the next few days keep across the forecast. It may turn colder for

:14:54. > :14:54.Christmas Day
