:00:16. > :00:25.
:00:25. > :00:29.hour but now it is time for the film Hello and welcome to the film review
:00:29. > :00:35.on BBC News. We have Jason Solomons to take us through this week's
:00:35. > :00:45.releases. What we have? We have Ryan Gosling in The Place Beyond the
:00:45. > :00:47.
:00:47. > :00:57.Pines. We also have Simon Killer, which is an American in Paris and
:00:57. > :00:59.
:00:59. > :01:04.new film by Antonio Campos. We finish with Tom Cruise in oblivion.
:01:04. > :01:11.The Place Beyond the Pines sentenced to nine -- to me like a good one.
:01:11. > :01:21.This is the best film I have seen this year so far. It is a film that
:01:21. > :01:22.
:01:22. > :01:27.I did not know much about. I don't want to spoil it. Leave the room now
:01:27. > :01:32.if you do not want to know. It is about Ryan Gosling who plays an
:01:32. > :01:37.outlaw, he becomes a bank robber. The film changes pace and it becomes
:01:37. > :01:43.about the policeman who is chasing him, played by Bradley Cooper. Then
:01:43. > :01:48.it changes again and becomes about another generation. It is an epic
:01:48. > :01:54.crime film and becomes extremely Internet. The bit we look at is
:01:54. > :02:04.Bradley Cooper dealing with police corruption, is he heroic or zero? --
:02:04. > :02:04.
:02:04. > :02:14.extremely input -- extremely Internet. This is just a small
:02:14. > :02:20.
:02:20. > :02:29.fraction of what is going on. say another word. I want. -- I want.
:02:29. > :02:36.What do you expect me to do? You are joking, right? You are the chief.
:02:36. > :02:41.This is your problem. This is our problem in the police department and
:02:41. > :02:48.I am bringing it to your attention because that is what I should do.
:02:48. > :02:56.that what you should do, rat out other cops?
:02:56. > :03:06.Bradley Cooper is to raise six. is building on his reputation. --
:03:06. > :03:12.Bradley Cooper is terrific. He is more than just hangover. He is
:03:12. > :03:21.upright and right-thinking in the film and then he gets drawn in to
:03:21. > :03:27.the ways of the police. It is about love but it is also about
:03:27. > :03:32.corruption. Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have love story at the start.
:03:32. > :03:42.It is about how things get muddled over a period and how history will
:03:42. > :03:48.
:03:48. > :03:58.see you. I thought it was really smart and beautifully done. It is
:03:58. > :04:06.
:04:06. > :04:11.almost like a Western type movie. Let us move on. I guess Simon
:04:11. > :04:19.Killer, the clue is in the title. This is a strange new film by
:04:19. > :04:26.Antonio Campos. He is part of this new young indie crew which are very
:04:26. > :04:33.current in India at -- in America. I suppose it is like an American cycle
:04:33. > :04:41.in Paris. It is a flipside to the American romantic films. Here is
:04:41. > :04:44.young students who goes to Paris for a gap year to recover from a
:04:44. > :04:52.relationship and finds himself completely alienate it. He does not
:04:52. > :04:57.know where to turn. He takes up with a young prostitute. He stays with a
:04:57. > :05:03.friend and a friend of his mother's. He smokes a lot. He does
:05:03. > :05:10.not know what he can do. Then he realises he has a frightening power
:05:10. > :05:18.and he grows into the monster of the title. Is this a low-budget the
:05:18. > :05:28.talented Mr Ripley? There is an element of that. Is he going to
:05:28. > :05:38.
:05:38. > :05:45.become a killer? It tells you at the start this is not going to be a
:05:45. > :05:49.jolly romp. It does not make him like a serial killer. There are no
:05:49. > :05:55.concessions to the audience. It is lovable and enjoyable in a weird
:05:55. > :06:03.way. As long as you know going in you will not like it. It is not
:06:03. > :06:07.romantic. It is another antihero. It is an interesting companion piece to
:06:07. > :06:16.The Place Beyond the Pines because it is examining the hero and what
:06:16. > :06:22.cinema does about these creatures. Now for oblivion. Yes, talking about
:06:22. > :06:28.heroes, Tom Cruise always plays the hero. He is in the film which is
:06:28. > :06:33.set, I don't know when. There is one of those vice overs. I have no
:06:33. > :06:40.notion when it starts. It was such a confusing voice-over. No one knew
:06:40. > :06:46.what was going on. We have a product of him with Andrea Riseborough. --
:06:46. > :06:50.we have a clip. Earth has been invaded. They live in beautiful
:06:50. > :07:00.houses which float in the ear. I do not know what they are talking
:07:00. > :07:04.
:07:04. > :07:14.about. Do you have any memories before the
:07:14. > :07:26.
:07:26. > :07:33.mission? Our job is not to remember. Remember. Do you remember her?Jack,
:07:33. > :07:40.it was a beacon which brought her down. We do not know who she is or
:07:40. > :07:50.what she is. I'm sorry but that is almost comedy
:07:50. > :07:54.
:07:54. > :08:00.dialogue. I do not who wrote it. There are elements of total recall,
:08:00. > :08:10.planet of the apes, New York lying in the rubble. He is wearing the
:08:10. > :08:10.
:08:10. > :08:15.same T-shirt. Olga Kurylenko has been delivered in a box. It is such
:08:15. > :08:22.a derivative science-fiction movie. I thought there would be a joke
:08:22. > :08:27.somewhere but no where does one laugh. I laughed. The future seems
:08:27. > :08:34.like a terribly miserable place. instead of watching the film, get
:08:34. > :08:40.the matrix out. The art and design is very futuristic and I like that.
:08:40. > :08:50.That is the only thing I like. best film of the week is in the
:08:50. > :08:51.
:08:51. > :08:58.house. It is in French. You explain. Francois Ozon is a very prolific and
:08:58. > :09:04.elegant French film maker. Probably his best film yet, starring Kristin
:09:04. > :09:10.Scott Thomas. It is about out teacher in a school educating a boy
:09:11. > :09:15.about how to write fiction. He goes into another person's house and
:09:15. > :09:21.tells the story about how the teacher becomes obsessed with his
:09:21. > :09:29.homework. It is very smart piece of work. It is not as good as its first
:09:29. > :09:39.hour. Kristin Scott Thomas is a frustrated bourgeois housewife.
:09:39. > :09:41.
:09:41. > :09:51.DVD of the week is spirit of 45, that is 1945. It is an archive
:09:51. > :10:00.
:10:00. > :10:04.footage filmed by Ken Loach. It is out on DVD this it is a booth for
:10:04. > :10:12.the Thatcher government. They nationalised everything. Mrs
:10:12. > :10:18.Thatcher comes in and privatised everything. He does miss out the bit
:10:18. > :10:28.in between, Callaghan and the Winter of discontent. How should we judge
:10:28. > :10:35.
:10:35. > :10:44.this? Is its historical? I thought It is very personal. It is his take
:10:44. > :10:50.on things. It is actually asking if that generation remembers the spirit
:10:50. > :10:54.of 45 then they should get it back again. What is interesting is that
:10:54. > :11:01.there was a point where we are all in this together which is absolutely
:11:01. > :11:08.true. I find this very powerful and it made me cry for what we have
:11:08. > :11:13.lost. I am not seeing his politics were correct historically, but there
