:00:29. > :00:35.Hello and welcome to the Film Review. To take us through this

:00:35. > :00:45.week's cinema releases, Mark commode. We have got a very mixed

:00:45. > :00:48.

:00:48. > :00:58.bag. We have I And So Excited. We have Dead Man Down. That is a

:00:58. > :00:58.

:00:58. > :01:08.version of the Deal with the Dragon Tattoo. -- the Goal. Something camp

:01:08. > :01:15.to start with. Have you seen the trailers? The fact the original

:01:15. > :01:20.title has two meanings has been discussed. This is basically a sex

:01:20. > :01:25.comedy set largely on an aeroplane and largely set in an airport. At

:01:25. > :01:29.the beginning, the aeroplane takes off. They have a problem with the

:01:29. > :01:35.landing gear. They tried to take off. That is as far as it goes for

:01:35. > :01:40.the narrative. Essentially, it has been described as being a sort of

:01:40. > :01:45.socio-political satire. The passengers of the aeroplane are

:01:45. > :01:49.people who are all treated badly by the authorities in Spain. That is

:01:49. > :01:59.portrayed by the cabin staff and the stewards and stewardesses who

:01:59. > :01:59.

:01:59. > :03:05.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 66 seconds

:03:05. > :03:11.I am a confident passenger already. You get the general gist. What then

:03:11. > :03:16.happens is as they realise they are in trouble, they decide that as far

:03:16. > :03:21.as economy class passengers are concerned, they will drag them. The

:03:21. > :03:25.interesting thing about the film is that if you understand the

:03:25. > :03:30.references, there are some strong political underpinnings. The

:03:30. > :03:35.airport is a famous one. You meet - - immediately understand this is to

:03:35. > :03:39.do with political and financial corruption. You see the newspaper

:03:39. > :03:44.about financial scandals. When the plane lands, one of them may be

:03:44. > :03:47.arrested. There are all of the secret lives. There is a socio-

:03:47. > :03:51.political underpinning. But if that does not strike a chord with you,

:03:51. > :03:56.as it may not outside of Spain, what you are left with is the

:03:56. > :04:01.question of whether this is funny or not. I have to say it isn't

:04:01. > :04:04.anything like as funny as it should be. It's a shame. Is he the clips

:04:04. > :04:12.and you think it will be funny. There is that musical clip in which

:04:12. > :04:16.they are all lip-synching. And the director has an extraordinary

:04:16. > :04:20.reputation, going back to his earlier career, for outrageous

:04:20. > :04:27.comedies, sexy, subversive, doing things that are shocking.

:04:27. > :04:34.Intriguing and interesting. But the film itself is very much a bit drab,

:04:34. > :04:42.washed out. What you really want is for it to be a really great, bawdy,

:04:42. > :04:49.eg, sexy comedy. But he has made something that is strangely Telopea

:04:49. > :04:53.-- televisual. If the political satire stuff does not hit home, you

:04:53. > :05:02.are just left unfortunately with a rather live comedy. The whole gag

:05:02. > :05:10.is the Kate has -- the plane has nowhere to land. But I love him as

:05:10. > :05:15.a producer. He is an extraordinary film-maker. It's a real shame that

:05:15. > :05:20.it is as disappointing as it is. Not funny enough?

:05:20. > :05:24.No. And I wanted to laugh. The claim of insufficient laughter is a

:05:24. > :05:33.real shame. If what left?

:05:33. > :05:39.For -- what next. This is essentially a mixture of

:05:39. > :05:45.things. On one hand it's a gangland thriller, Colin Farrell working for

:05:45. > :05:49.a mob boss, it is also a woman who wants revenge on the man who'd

:05:49. > :05:53.drunk drove her. She was involved in a collision. Since then she has

:05:53. > :05:58.been dealing with the scars and that changed her life. She wants

:05:58. > :06:02.Colin Farrell to get revenge for her. She also has a strange

:06:02. > :06:07.relationship with her mother, who is very into baking and cooking.

:06:07. > :06:10.You are looking at me strangely. We do not mention Tupperware very

:06:10. > :06:15.often. In the middle of this, there is an

:06:15. > :06:20.interesting character film. However, the film company wants to sell it

:06:20. > :06:25.as an action thriller. Chasing, guns and day -- and explosions.

:06:25. > :06:29.That is the least interesting part of the film. The most interesting

:06:29. > :06:34.is the character stuff. Well- observed details in the mother-

:06:34. > :06:37.daughter of relationship. The mother is desperate for the

:06:38. > :06:41.daughter to get back out there. That is the stuff, it appears to me,

:06:41. > :06:46.the directive is interested in. But the film does it has to be an

:06:46. > :06:49.explosive action thriller. It ends up being a mixed bag. If you are

:06:49. > :06:55.looking for interesting character the trail, with some great

:06:55. > :07:00.performances, and the actress does a great job, with what is really a

:07:00. > :07:05.messy script, she is great. But if you want a straight out action

:07:05. > :07:09.thriller, you will wonder why the woman playing the mother talks

:07:09. > :07:12.about cookies and Tupperware. That is the film not -- that I am

:07:12. > :07:16.interested in, not the one sold by the poster.

:07:16. > :07:21.I would happily spend one hour were looking at them talking about

:07:21. > :07:28.Tupperware and cakes. All-Stars?

:07:28. > :07:31.This is a home-grown street dance film for the younger viewers. A

:07:31. > :07:36.junior school musical. Done in the very broad and colourful strokes

:07:36. > :07:41.of... Do you remember the double- deckers? Films that were bright,

:07:41. > :07:45.brash and breezy. The story is that kids have a place where they beat,

:07:45. > :07:49.it is called the garage, council is going to knock it down unless they

:07:49. > :07:51.saved the day by putting on a show that will involve them all pulling

:07:51. > :08:01.together. I feel like I have been there

:08:01. > :08:12.

:08:12. > :08:16.before. Why are we call that? Because we

:08:16. > :08:22.all have completely different talents but we are All-Stars.

:08:22. > :08:30.is the dumbest vain for anything I have ever heard. -- dumbest name.

:08:30. > :08:35.am allergic to those. Also lactose intolerant. I just threw up in my

:08:35. > :08:43.mouth a little bit. The battle is the main event. People will pay to

:08:43. > :08:48.watch. It will save the garage. don't know why you are here. Look,

:08:48. > :08:58.we are used to putting it hours of training. This dancing thing will

:08:58. > :09:01.

:09:01. > :09:06.be no problem. Show us. But who will dance? U -- you will.

:09:06. > :09:11.It is very easy to sneer at this kind of film. Actually, I thought

:09:11. > :09:15.it was kind of charming. There are some big names, as far as the

:09:15. > :09:21.grown-ups go. But the young cast really make it good. It's a very

:09:21. > :09:26.sweet-natured film. We have seen it before. But it has some great

:09:26. > :09:34.dancing and also has these interesting dream sequences, which

:09:34. > :09:39.are nostalgic of older films. There is a ballroom dancing sequence. A

:09:39. > :09:43.man imagines himself find -- fight against Warriors made entirely of

:09:43. > :09:47.paper. It has more ambition than perhaps one would expect from

:09:47. > :09:51.something which appears from the outside to be so generic. It will

:09:51. > :09:56.not change the world. You are seeing the black and white dancing

:09:56. > :10:00.now. It is quite charming. I sat in a room full of critics, who were

:10:00. > :10:05.kind of sniffy about it because it is playing to a young audience, but

:10:05. > :10:09.I have nothing against that. It was done with a smile on its faced, it

:10:09. > :10:13.will not set the world alight but there isn't that much great kids'

:10:13. > :10:16.entertainment round, outside of animation. I thought this was a

:10:16. > :10:21.refreshing change. And did the young characters are

:10:21. > :10:26.likeable and that matters in a film like this. -- and the young.

:10:26. > :10:32.And you do like them. This is not a narrative twists film...

:10:32. > :10:38.Off no. But you want them to succeed. -- no.

:10:38. > :10:44.And he won't leave disappointed. What is the best out there?

:10:44. > :10:50.In the Fog is a very harrowing war film. It is basically a story about

:10:50. > :10:55.loyalty and betrayal, about the way in which appearing to have their --

:10:55. > :11:01.the trade your combat can be worst thing. It has very few cuts in the

:11:01. > :11:11.film. 72 in the whole length. It takes its time, is moody and

:11:11. > :11:11.

:11:11. > :11:18.atmospheric. A little bit like Come and See. It is poetic and courting

:11:18. > :11:21.and not depressing but very challenging. -- haunting. It did

:11:21. > :11:25.that thing war movies should do, which is ask questions about

:11:25. > :11:29.conflict, rather than just dramatising them. It's a very fine

:11:29. > :11:33.piece of work. Finally, what is the best DVD at

:11:33. > :11:39.the moment? Life of Pi is out on DVD and Blu-

:11:39. > :11:43.ray. On Blu-ray, it is the 3D version. You saw it in the cinema.

:11:43. > :11:48.I saw it in 3D. I thought it worked. And I am not

:11:48. > :11:52.necessarily a convert but it work. I am dead sceptical about 3D. I

:11:52. > :11:56.have seen it in both and I prefer the two D version because it is

:11:56. > :12:04.bright and clear. But of all 3D films, I thought it was at the top

:12:05. > :12:09.end. -- 2D. But it's a brilliant piece of storytelling. It's a story

:12:09. > :12:15.about storytelling in the first place. Which story do you want it

:12:15. > :12:19.to be about? A guide cast adrift in the ocean with a tiger? It is about

:12:19. > :12:23.religion, politics, all of these things. But it never seems to be.

:12:23. > :12:27.It just seems to be an interesting and fantastic story that asks you

:12:27. > :12:31.what you want to believe. I thought it was beautifully rendered. The

:12:31. > :12:35.special effects are amazing. You don't notice they are special

:12:35. > :12:38.effects. You don't say, wow, look at those pixels! You just believe

:12:38. > :12:42.you are cast adrift with a kid and a tiger.

:12:42. > :12:44.And because it's a great story, it has been transferred to DVD, it

:12:45. > :12:49.does not take a great deal away from it.

:12:49. > :12:56.It is definitely something you can watch as a family film. It has some

:12:56. > :13:02.challenging things in it. But it's a film that everybody can watch and

:13:02. > :13:07.then afterwards talk about and discuss. Lot of people said it is

:13:07. > :13:11.not a film that transfer as well from the book but that is not true.

:13:11. > :13:17.Ang Lee did a fantastic role. It a great performance as well.
