:00:25. > :00:33.Welcome to the Film Review here on BBC news. To take us through this

:00:34. > :00:39.week's releases we have Jason summer. We spread around the world

:00:39. > :00:49.for Neil Jordan 's latest delve into the vampire John Rick, by Santi,

:00:49. > :00:52.

:00:52. > :01:01.starring Gemma Arterton. -- by Santi am. Viggo Mortensen plays a twin

:01:01. > :01:09.brothers in everyone has a plan. Finally we are back in Britain for a

:01:09. > :01:16.tale of corrupt cops played by Paul Bettany and Stephen Graham in Blood.

:01:16. > :01:24.Byzantium, I think it was filmed in Hastings, wasn't it? It doesn't ever

:01:24. > :01:28.say it was shot in Hastings, but it is the sort of locusts that Neil

:01:28. > :01:33.Jordan has plumbed the fore. Mona Lisa had that kind of element back

:01:33. > :01:38.in the 80s, and this reminded me quite a lot of that film. This is

:01:38. > :01:43.very much a vampire movie, so we are in the area of the Twilight films,

:01:43. > :01:50.but this is a riposte to that because Gemma Arterton plays a

:01:50. > :01:57.mother vampire and her daughter, show runner. They are 200 years

:01:58. > :02:02.old, but they look very good on it. They hold up in a bordello-type

:02:03. > :02:07.place called the Byzantium in this seaside town and the daughter

:02:07. > :02:11.started going to school and learning about becoming a vampire, but she

:02:11. > :02:17.gives clues about her identity by writing essays to her teacher. This

:02:17. > :02:27.is rather worrying for the teacher, Tom Hollander, who calls Gemma

:02:27. > :02:28.

:02:28. > :02:32.Arterton to find out what is going I was hoping to arrange a more

:02:32. > :02:40.official meeting with the school counsellor and Eleanor herself.

:02:40. > :02:44.Well, what is the problem? She usually sales through school.

:02:44. > :02:54.wrote her life story and is insistent that it is true. She

:02:54. > :02:54.

:02:54. > :03:00.describes you as a vampire. Well, she has got a great imagination. I

:03:00. > :03:09.hope she gets top marks. Who else has read it? You have sole care of

:03:09. > :03:15.her. I'm doing just fine, thank you. Like you, I am a big Neil Jordan

:03:15. > :03:23.fan. I loved Mona Lisa. He did interview with the vampire, of

:03:23. > :03:27.course. There are so many vampire movies. The trouble with them now is

:03:27. > :03:31.that I don't know the rules any more. When I grew up it was

:03:31. > :03:38.crosses, garlic and going through the door, and now every film has its

:03:38. > :03:48.own rule and I wasn't quite sure what the rules were in by Santi am

:03:48. > :03:55.-- Byzantium. But the two leads are excellent. It has that visual elan

:03:55. > :04:05.that Neil Jordan is known for. a very striking, although I'm not

:04:05. > :04:10.

:04:10. > :04:14.sure what the bridge will notice meant. -- motifs. It doesn't make

:04:14. > :04:22.sense to me, it is totally preposterous, and takes away from

:04:22. > :04:32.what is a rather good movie. It is half of a good film. It isn't Let

:04:32. > :04:33.

:04:33. > :04:39.The Right One In. But it does sound worth a watch. Everyone has a plan.

:04:39. > :04:45.Yes, they do. Viggo Mortensen's plan is to take the role of his twin

:04:45. > :04:51.brother. He gets a visit from his brother, Pedro, who is caught up in

:04:51. > :04:57.some shady business where they grew up and he decides to take his place

:04:57. > :05:06.because he is a twin. A sort of the Lord of the dead were in is, if you

:05:06. > :05:16.see what I have done there. -- ringers. He was born in Argentina so

:05:16. > :05:17.

:05:17. > :05:21.he speaks the dialect. Everyone has a twin then? It is one of the worst

:05:21. > :05:29.things that an agent can say to a novelist, why can't you give your

:05:29. > :05:36.character and evil twin? A boring one, in this case. It is a very

:05:36. > :05:44.atmospheric, this lost world of the Argentine jungle. Unfortunately, the

:05:44. > :05:50.stagnant waters mirror the plot. It gets bogged down. Viggo Mortensen is

:05:50. > :05:54.a handsome actor and very popular, but he gazes in America a lot and he

:05:54. > :06:04.realises he is becoming his twin when he steps into his shoes. It all

:06:04. > :06:06.

:06:06. > :06:16.gets a bit bogged down. Bladder. This is -- Blood. This is all about

:06:16. > :06:22.siblings, played by Paul Bettany and Stephen Graham. I don't know in what

:06:22. > :06:27.casting director's mind these two could be considered brothers. By no

:06:27. > :06:37.stretch of the imagination could these two Maccabi brothers, except

:06:37. > :06:39.

:06:39. > :06:44.in a cop thriller set in the whirl that perhaps -- whirl. They play cop

:06:44. > :06:49.brothers who have been mired in corruption because they covered up a

:06:49. > :06:59.murder. So mismatched are they they have to get a Paul Bettany to stand

:06:59. > :07:15.

:07:15. > :07:25.on stairs so that match up. Go. Jo. Morning, boys.Have you

:07:25. > :07:30.

:07:30. > :07:40.burnt it? Don't you dare mess this up. Do you hear me? I won't.You're

:07:40. > :07:41.

:07:42. > :07:51.getting married? He's getting married! Thanks. It only happened

:07:51. > :07:56.last night, so I'm a little bit all over the place. Thanks.

:07:56. > :08:02.They look like brothers to me. Not. Apart from the casting problem,

:08:02. > :08:10.which is a problem, actually... I put that one and went with it. Their

:08:10. > :08:18.dad is Brian Cox, and anything could come out of him. He used to rule the

:08:18. > :08:22.roost. He could let slip the secrets of where the bodies are buried. It

:08:22. > :08:28.is actually a very atmospheric thriller. It was shot by George

:08:28. > :08:35.Richmond whose dad was Anthony Richmond who shot Don't Look Now so

:08:36. > :08:40.he is a very good at the atmosphere of the area. You all the grandeur of

:08:40. > :08:50.the City Hall there. It is a Greek tragedy, it has a lot of ideas. It

:08:50. > :09:00.is hampered slightly by this mismatch of the brothers. Your Best

:09:00. > :09:02.

:09:02. > :09:10.of the week is beware Mr Baker. I want to meet Mr Baker. The lady the

:09:10. > :09:16.guy who made the documentary about Cream, he smashed a walking stick

:09:16. > :09:23.into his face for enquiring about them. They got a very fine music

:09:23. > :09:31.documentary out of this Drummer who played with Cream and then worked

:09:31. > :09:38.with Blind Faith and others. He was a fusion jazz rock Drummer who

:09:38. > :09:45.invented the drum solo, in a way, and I think animal from the Muppets
