:00:00. > :00:00.years since that drop goal which won England the Rugby World Cup. Now on
:00:00. > :00:22.BBC News it's time for The Film Review.
:00:23. > :00:33.Welcome to The Film Review here on BBC News to take us through this
:00:34. > :00:37.week's voices, Mark Kermode. We have The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the
:00:38. > :00:40.second instalment. Katniss Everdeen is back to fight again. We have Blue
:00:41. > :00:48.Is the Warmest Colour, the controversial winner of the Pandora.
:00:49. > :00:50.And we have The Family. Luc Besson directs Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert
:00:51. > :00:56.De Niro. What could possibly go wrong? Accent is quite a lot.
:00:57. > :01:01.However, let's start with The Hunger Games. Tell us more. I did not see
:01:02. > :01:04.the first one. It is a dystopian future tale in which the poor are
:01:05. > :01:13.taken from towns in order to fight in the squad at Oriel sport. ``
:01:14. > :01:19.gladiatorial sport. At the end of the first one, Katniss Everdeen had
:01:20. > :01:22.outsmarted the Games. This is a problem by the character played by
:01:23. > :01:26.Donald Sutherland, who realises she is a figurehead, someone who will
:01:27. > :01:29.help people rise up and rebel. He kills that what she has to do to
:01:30. > :01:39.stay alive is to carry the pretence of a relationship which saw her
:01:40. > :01:44.through the first hunger games. The president has decided that in order
:01:45. > :01:54.to really began to `` to go up the ante, he will have another Hunger
:01:55. > :02:02.Games For The People Who Survived The Fostering.
:02:03. > :02:05.People have to be brave enough to take the opportunity. We have to go
:02:06. > :02:14.before the killers. They will kill us. What do the others? The ones who
:02:15. > :02:26.stay? I do not want people looking to me. I cannot help them.
:02:27. > :02:37.Do what you want. I am staying here. That was Jennifer Lawrence is
:02:38. > :02:40.Katniss Everdeen. The first film all day waiting if unacknowledged debt
:02:41. > :02:44.to Battle Royale, a story about children fighting children. In this
:02:45. > :02:48.one, because it is returning champions, the age of the combatants
:02:49. > :02:53.is rather higher. This becomes much more a story about what the Games
:02:54. > :02:59.mean in terms of keeping the debt dashes `` the masses downtrodden. It
:03:00. > :03:04.remains me of rollerball, where you have this gladiatorial sport to keep
:03:05. > :03:09.everyone subservient. The problem is, James can's character becomes a
:03:10. > :03:16.hero and he becomes dangerous. In the case of The Hunger Games, when
:03:17. > :03:20.that is ever gene `` when Katniss Everdeen becomes dangerous, she is
:03:21. > :03:24.at work. It is quite a brutal film but not as violent in terms of what
:03:25. > :03:28.you actually see. That film had if you trouble is with the censors
:03:29. > :03:35.here. It is a grim story with a straw dummy `` an extraordinary
:03:36. > :03:38.lead. Jennifer Lawrence is a commanding screen presence and has a
:03:39. > :03:42.natural quality. There is enough a lot of action involved. She is a
:03:43. > :03:46.fantastic and award`winning actress. The nice thing about The Hunger
:03:47. > :03:49.Games is it treats its audiences if they are intelligent, as if they are
:03:50. > :03:54.able to deal with a subject matter which is dark and difficult. My only
:03:55. > :03:58.criticism would be it is quite long. You're talking about the same when
:03:59. > :04:01.first 2001, and when the film. There's a sense they have gone to
:04:02. > :04:06.the film and thought, we do not want to leave anything out. If we do
:04:07. > :04:12.that, the fans will be upset. That is a minor problem. In general, it
:04:13. > :04:15.is a really, really good action entertainment for male and female
:04:16. > :04:19.audiences and Jennifer Lawrence is terrific.
:04:20. > :04:26.Let's move on. Lose the warmest colour. This caused a controversy at
:04:27. > :04:36.Cannes when it won the Palm d'Or. `` Blue Is the Warmest Colour. It is
:04:37. > :04:39.very very unusual. What they said was, Wick, the victory of this film
:04:40. > :04:44.is as much in the performance as it is with the directors. It is a love
:04:45. > :04:48.story over a long period of time. It is a long film and covers a long
:04:49. > :04:57.period in the central characters' lies. `` lives. There has been
:04:58. > :05:00.controversy about explicit sex scenes and a woman who wrote the
:05:01. > :05:05.graphic novel has been quite critical of those. I understand why.
:05:06. > :05:10.The film didn't need them. It is a film which is indulgent. But the two
:05:11. > :05:14.central performances are so strong, so powerful, so convincing, that
:05:15. > :05:17.actually, the things that are wrong with the film starts to fall away
:05:18. > :05:20.and in the end, you believe in these people as people. The believe they
:05:21. > :05:26.are consumed by a relationship which on the one hand is quite
:05:27. > :05:30.destructive. You believe the changing moods of the relationship
:05:31. > :05:35.over a long period of time, which is not easy to convey an film. There
:05:36. > :05:40.are reservations, but from the acting point of view, it is
:05:41. > :05:50.flawless. The controversy, is that to do with the sex scenes of the
:05:51. > :05:59.actresses `` the actresses? The Family. Robert De Niro. Yeah, when
:06:00. > :06:02.you have had a career with the films he has been in, the question is
:06:03. > :06:08.always going to be, aren't you just treading water? The story is Robert
:06:09. > :06:13.De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer Aaron witness protection. He was an
:06:14. > :06:16.American Mafia mob boss. He gave evidence so now they are hiding.
:06:17. > :06:20.They have to move around all the time. The move into France will stop
:06:21. > :06:24.there is a lot of jokes about French, although it has a French
:06:25. > :06:33.director, which is fine. The French are rude and not tell `` do not know
:06:34. > :06:40.how to conduct themselves. They are crime family, so they cannot keep
:06:41. > :06:47.their heads down. Here's a clip. I do all right? It is just the
:06:48. > :06:51.prospect of packing up again and moving when they find out you have
:06:52. > :06:56.killed the plumber. I did not kill him. I taken to the hospital. You
:06:57. > :07:05.beat him to a pulp. The only plumber within 20 miles. He disrespected us.
:07:06. > :07:15.He tried to rip me off. They just have in my shoes. and would not have
:07:16. > :07:23.built `` beat him up. If you do not want to draw attention
:07:24. > :07:29.to yourself, don't kill the plumber. The thing is, it is a very throwaway
:07:30. > :07:33.idea. It is an idea we have seen before. The idea that a criminal as
:07:34. > :07:38.to why all and a sleepy environment and therefore having to behave in a
:07:39. > :07:42.way which blends in. It is not without a certain charm. You cannot
:07:43. > :07:46.put Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer on screen together and not
:07:47. > :07:53.find anything. The thing is, it is so lightweight and throwaway, plus
:07:54. > :07:57.the tone is over the place. It is described in the press notes is a
:07:58. > :08:01.dark action comedy. Really? It is more like a bumbling, fumbling
:08:02. > :08:07.comedy. Moments are quite charming, but they are few and far between. It
:08:08. > :08:12.makes specific reference to Goodfellas and you sit there
:08:13. > :08:17.thinking, so Robert De Niro is now in a family making jokes about
:08:18. > :08:23.Goodfellas? Nothing flags up Scorsese and his great past. It is
:08:24. > :08:28.not tenable. I laughed a couple of times, which is more than I do with
:08:29. > :08:34.many of these films. But it is not very good. Just disposable. I seem
:08:35. > :08:41.to remember your measurement of laughing was six six times. It
:08:42. > :08:47.couple of chuckles and is not. I think we should move on.
:08:48. > :08:50.The best film out just now is Gravity. I would advise everyone to
:08:51. > :08:55.see it on the biggest possible screen. If you can see the day, and
:08:56. > :09:00.then all of people cannot, if you can, I think this is the one 3`D
:09:01. > :09:04.adds to the film. Generally, it doesn't do anything for me at all,
:09:05. > :09:10.but in this case, I thought, you know what, he has directed in such a
:09:11. > :09:13.way that the 3`D adds to the story. The couple of people have been to
:09:14. > :09:17.see it and, with motion sickness. You do get that sense of, you know,
:09:18. > :09:30.the following, which weighs up, which weighs down? `` which we is
:09:31. > :09:38.up? I have not had a bad word about this movie. This film is 90 minutes
:09:39. > :09:41.long. When is the last time this type of film has done that? James
:09:42. > :09:44.Cameron would have made it three and a half hours long and there would be
:09:45. > :09:51.a director 's cut coming out with another half an hour. What DVD would
:09:52. > :09:56.you like to talk about? This is a strange and incredibly moving film.
:09:57. > :10:01.It is the story of the relationship between these two people. He is
:10:02. > :10:03.completely obsessed with what it means and it is then dealing with
:10:04. > :10:09.tragedy and love and free conciliation. It started out as a
:10:10. > :10:16.stage show where they would play songs and do state she's `` speeches
:10:17. > :10:19.in between. I thought it was overwhelmingly powerful and
:10:20. > :10:22.wonderfully told story. Brilliant use of music. Sometimes you see
:10:23. > :10:31.music and it is not done well. This is where we have built the songs. I
:10:32. > :10:34.love the story. I thought it was really performed really well told
:10:35. > :10:40.and are really moving. Thank you very much. A quick reminder that you
:10:41. > :10:44.will find more film news and reviews from across the BBC online,
:10:45. > :10:50.including all our previous shows, where you can see the address all.
:10:51. > :11:06.`` on`screen. That is it for this week. Thank you for watching.
:11:07. > :11:11.We will have to keep warm clouds to hand over the weekend. There is a
:11:12. > :11:18.lot of change on the weather front, stained chilly. It is called in one
:11:19. > :11:21.or two spots with freezing fog in the morning. High pressure which has
:11:22. > :11:25.been here for the last few days is here to stay. You can see how the
:11:26. > :11:31.air is flowing around it. At the same time, it is pushing that grey
:11:32. > :11:34.cloud around in the direction of the UK. The thickest of the cloud over
:11:35. > :11:38.the next couple of days is in the northern half of the UK. This cloud
:11:39. > :11:42.will topple over into Scotland, novel England and Northern Ireland.
:11:43. > :11:45.There will be clear spells around. It is not one solid area of cloud,
:11:46. > :11:46.but you can
