:00:00. > :00:00.Championship. The World Championship Snooker a medal for Great Britain at

:00:00. > :00:16.the diving event in London. Now, it's time for The Film Review.

:00:17. > :00:22.Hello and welcome The Film Review on BBC News. To take us through this

:00:23. > :00:26.week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode. What do we have? A mixed

:00:27. > :00:29.bag, I'm sure you know. We have Transcendence, the new movie

:00:30. > :00:36.starring Johnny Depp, which is done, let us say, not so well in America.

:00:37. > :00:40.We have Tracks, a recreation of an epic journey across the Australian

:00:41. > :00:46.outback. One woman, four camels and a dog. We have The Other Woman, a

:00:47. > :00:52.story about women turning the tables on the man who wronged them. You

:00:53. > :00:55.said something about Transcendence there, not doing particularly well

:00:56. > :01:01.in the United States. It has been loathed, hated and dumped on as the

:01:02. > :01:08.worse nonblock bust are of the year? Comparisons have been made with

:01:09. > :01:12.John Carter. The film is the debut from Wally Pfister, best`known as

:01:13. > :01:19.Chris Nolan's sinning to per. It was based on a script, referred to as

:01:20. > :01:24.the Black List, a very fated but as yet unproduced screenplays back in

:01:25. > :01:28.2012. Johnny Depp is an artificial intelligence specialist, who is

:01:29. > :01:32.enthusiastic about reaching the point when computers basically over

:01:33. > :01:36.take mankind and can know and understand the world in a more

:01:37. > :01:40.extraordinary way than mankind can. This of course causes many people to

:01:41. > :01:47.think, you know, aren't you playing God? Isn't this all about a bit

:01:48. > :01:53.dangerous? Here is a clip. These are state`of`the`art processors. You

:01:54. > :02:01.won't find faster power anywhere else in the world. Good even, Dr

:02:02. > :02:08.Tagger. He has seen old pictures of you. Good evening, Donald Buchanan.

:02:09. > :02:18.It knows me? Of course it can. Social media. Tell Agent bow can an

:02:19. > :02:24.about yourself? I'm a physically independent neural network invented

:02:25. > :02:29.by Dr Will Caster. Can you prove that you are self`aware? That is a

:02:30. > :02:34.difficult question, doctor. Can you prove that you are What happens very

:02:35. > :02:37.early on, he is attacked by terrorists. The only way of

:02:38. > :02:42.surviving is he has to upload his personality to a data bank and

:02:43. > :02:45.become an electronic presence. Become somewhere between man and

:02:46. > :02:49.machine. However, is the uploaded presence really him, or is the

:02:50. > :02:52.entity for which his wife is now in love, actually something completely

:02:53. > :02:56.different, something sinister something that really isn't the man

:02:57. > :03:01.she married? The interesting thing with the film is, it has gone down

:03:02. > :03:05.very badly in America. The box office has been poor. Bad reviews.

:03:06. > :03:10.That looks like it will be repeated over here. Someone who is a fan of

:03:11. > :03:15.Wally Pfister, as a cinematographer, he is really brilliant. I went into

:03:16. > :03:19.this with high expectations. Generally, I liked it. I thought it

:03:20. > :03:23.was... What it is. You are the only the man of the planet who liked it,

:03:24. > :03:31.as far as I can see? I found a couple of others. It's throw back

:03:32. > :03:36.1970s B picture. Wally Pfister pictures like Silent Running, big

:03:37. > :03:42.idea films. The problem with the film at $100 million you make movies

:03:43. > :03:49.that have lots of explosions in it. Chris Nolan when he made Inception

:03:50. > :03:53.which Wally Pfister shot it was clever and intelligent. It's like an

:03:54. > :03:57.extended episode of the Twilight Zone. What would happen if you

:03:58. > :04:02.uploaded your personality to the computer and the computer had access

:04:03. > :04:05.to the internet. It's low on crowd pleasing explosions. Johnny Depp is

:04:06. > :04:10.billed at the star. Early on he is sidelined. He becomes a cyber

:04:11. > :04:18.presence. The heavy liftside done by Paul Bettany, a brilliant actor and

:04:19. > :04:25.Rebecca Hall. As you saw from that clip. It is a film, which unlike the

:04:26. > :04:30.standard trend for scientific movies doesn't have an edit every

:04:31. > :04:35.milliseconds. It wants to take its time. Some of the dialogue is

:04:36. > :04:39.clunky, in a sort of Star Trek way. I thought it was a film with big

:04:40. > :04:43.ambitions, dealing with an interesting idea in a populous

:04:44. > :04:47.manner, I thought. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed all two hours of it. I'm

:04:48. > :04:51.genuinely surprised by just how hostile the reviews have been. We

:04:52. > :04:56.are in favour of diversity in this programme, as you know. Here is what

:04:57. > :05:01.you need to do. Go and see it and find out... I will. Make up your own

:05:02. > :05:15.mind. I will. Don't let it put you off. I won't. Now, Tracks. This is a

:05:16. > :05:20.true story. Robin Davidson tracked to the West Coast, armed with four

:05:21. > :05:23.camels, a dog, and a sponsorship deal with nation National

:05:24. > :05:30.Geographic. In order to do it she had to be met at regular inter Vales

:05:31. > :05:36.by a photographer. For a lot of the journey she was alone. Certain parts

:05:37. > :05:42.of it she was joined by an elder. She is on her own. It is her, the

:05:43. > :05:49.animals, out in the desert facing her own demons. They do a back story

:05:50. > :05:54.about why she wants to be alone, her own personal issues. It doesn't over

:05:55. > :06:00.do it. It's a dangerous journey. There are moments of peril... Her

:06:01. > :06:05.survival is not quaranteed. The film doesn't feel the need to crank it up

:06:06. > :06:11.and do silly stuff. It's pretty much as it happens. It proceeds at a

:06:12. > :06:16.walking pace. Which is right. It looks beautiful. You believe Mia

:06:17. > :06:22.Wasikowska is that character. I thought it's not sentimental. It's

:06:23. > :06:26.not anything that tries to make this a jolly, sugary coated story. It's a

:06:27. > :06:29.very interesting story about a woman, who for reasons of her own,

:06:30. > :06:35.wants to be completely alone other than the company of these animals.

:06:36. > :06:43.The camels are extraordinarily exsprensive creatures. Talking about

:06:44. > :06:48.strong women, The Other Woman. If only we were Cameron Diaz and a

:06:49. > :06:57.revenge movie. Leslie Mann is married to a guy and she discovers

:06:58. > :07:03.he is having an affair with Cameron Diaz, they bond and get on and then

:07:04. > :07:08.they find out he is having an affair with another woman. I don't hate you

:07:09. > :07:14.at all. I got all of that out of my system with that woman. You can be

:07:15. > :07:19.friends with your husband's mistress. It's a dream come true.

:07:20. > :07:25.Her. She is working through some stuff. You smell amazing. What is

:07:26. > :07:39.that? I think it's just sweat. That was remarkably funny. First Wife's

:07:40. > :07:46.Club meets 9 to 5? Yes. Absent of the wit and one liners. It's one of

:07:47. > :07:49.those films that says, what we are doing, sisters doing it for

:07:50. > :07:53.themselves. They don't appear to be doing it for themselves or each

:07:54. > :07:58.other or us. It's meant to be a comedy in which the nature of what

:07:59. > :08:04.is happening on screen, lots of hysteria. You are thinking ` I bet

:08:05. > :08:08.this was great fun to make. Why do I think that? It's boring to watch.

:08:09. > :08:13.The more fun it was to make, the less fun everyone has watching you

:08:14. > :08:18.do it. Comedy is a rigorously disciplined. This misses everything.

:08:19. > :08:22.It doesn't... Challenge gender sterotypes. It repeats them, then

:08:23. > :08:27.says, it's OK it's a story about women on top. Which it kind of

:08:28. > :08:31.isn't. It's something which trots out the old cliches. There is the

:08:32. > :08:35.brainy one, the one who is the housewife. If those sterotypes

:08:36. > :08:40.appeared in any other movie you wouldn't give them the time of day.

:08:41. > :08:44.Underlying it all, it's not funny enough. The laughing you did to that

:08:45. > :08:48.clip, that is the most laughing that happened in the whole screening. I'm

:08:49. > :08:54.leaning towards going to see Transcendence. Exactly. Actually.

:08:55. > :09:01.Rebel Without a Cause, which I have seen on the telly, I have not seen

:09:02. > :09:05.on the big screen. A reissue. You have to seek them out. They are

:09:06. > :09:09.playing around the country, Google it. It's worth seeing on the big

:09:10. > :09:14.screen. Rebel Without a Cause stands the test of time. I hadn't seen it

:09:15. > :09:18.it on the big screen. You have seen it on the telly. It works. It is

:09:19. > :09:23.powerful. A very different movie to the movie you imagine from the

:09:24. > :09:27.posttest and the iconic imagery. James Dean really was a very, very

:09:28. > :09:31.talented, very promising actor. A lot of people dismiss him because

:09:32. > :09:36.there were three films. It's worth seeing. It reminds people, given it

:09:37. > :09:41.was in the 1950s, it reminds people that teenagers behaving badly, the

:09:42. > :09:45.problem with young people is not an entirely new phenomenon. No. It's

:09:46. > :09:51.about the story of a bad kid from a good home. I still think all those

:09:52. > :09:58.things still chime true. The performances arer terrific and it

:09:59. > :10:10.looks good. Your DVD choice That Sinking Feeling. It was . It's about

:10:11. > :10:18.a group of kids in Glasgow who solve their financial problems by stealing

:10:19. > :10:21.sinks. It's funny, really smart. It went into the Guinness Book of

:10:22. > :10:26.Records as officially the cheapest feature film ever thee at Raically

:10:27. > :10:31.released in the UK. It stands up to this day. All the things you love

:10:32. > :10:33.about Bill Forsyth are there in That Sinking Feeling. That is

:10:34. > :10:37.interesting. It bears out you talked about the theory about comedy. The

:10:38. > :10:42.cheaper the film, the more they have to work on the script. Therefore,

:10:43. > :10:47.actually the better it is. It I ma be the case that with Transcendence,

:10:48. > :10:54.that $100 million is too much money for that movie. Had they had the

:10:55. > :10:59.restrictions of Under the Skin it might have worked out in a more

:11:00. > :11:04.popular way. Cheap and cheerful. Thank you very much, Mark. A quick

:11:05. > :11:13.reminder before we go that you'll find more film news and reviews from

:11:14. > :11:19.Mark on his BBC blog Kermode Uncut. , that's at bbc.co.uk/markkermode.

:11:20. > :11:23.Thank you for watching. Goodbye. Good evening. A lot of cloud in the

:11:24. > :11:27.forecast today. A lot of rain as well. Some of that rain still

:11:28. > :11:31.continuing. The best of any brighter weather today has been across parts

:11:32. > :11:34.of Northern Ireland, South West Wales and south`west England.

:11:35. > :11:38.Generally speaking, it has been a grey, dismal day. Some of the rain

:11:39. > :11:44.persistent as it pushed further north and west. Brief respite before

:11:45. > :11:46.heavier pulses returned again across parts of Hampshire
