:00:00. > :00:20.and more medals with the home nations. Now on BBC News it is time

:00:21. > :00:25.for the film review. Hello and welcome to the film review on BBC

:00:26. > :00:30.News, to take us through this weeks in our releases is Mark Kermode.

:00:31. > :00:43.What do we have this week? As usual we have a very mixed bag, we have

:00:44. > :00:49.Joe, we have Hercules, in which Dwayne Johnson plays Hercules, it

:00:50. > :01:01.does what it says on the tin. And we have heard to echo which is built on

:01:02. > :01:06.a 21st`century update two TT. Let us start with Joe, a choice of

:01:07. > :01:11.redemption or ruin? It is a very interesting film, all of the critics

:01:12. > :01:25.have been wondering what it was that they were championing. They are both

:01:26. > :01:28.back on form, it is described as a rough South tale, essentially it is

:01:29. > :01:33.a tale of a surrogates father and son, Nick Cage has a business of

:01:34. > :01:39.poisoning trees in order that they can be knocked down and replenished,

:01:40. > :01:43.the kids says that he wants to work with him. He sees in the young child

:01:44. > :01:53.something in himself, they develop a strange father and son relationship.

:01:54. > :02:04.Here is a clip. Yes, I made the mistakes, can you

:02:05. > :02:16.`` can I borrow one of those beers of use. I don't know, you can borrow

:02:17. > :02:31.it but you cannot buy it. There you go, keep your eyes peeled. Look at

:02:32. > :02:38.that, that is the sound that gets the hookers excited, they know you

:02:39. > :02:43.have cash when you have that. It is interesting, Nicolas Cage has

:02:44. > :02:48.developed a reputation for histrionics on`screen, but this is

:02:49. > :02:52.him wanting to be taken seriously. It reminds you how good he is when

:02:53. > :02:59.he is on form, the kid we have seen before, in mud and tree of life.

:03:00. > :03:03.They have a very good on`screen chemistry, it is one of those films

:03:04. > :03:09.where you can smell the environment, the trees, the bar, the sweat. It is

:03:10. > :03:13.very gritty, it is somewhat a boy 's own story, the women don't get much

:03:14. > :03:18.to do other than being lovers and mothers. What about the pace of the

:03:19. > :03:22.film, the Telegraph says that the problem with this film is that it

:03:23. > :03:28.does not allow to be idle. The Guardian says it is close cinema,

:03:29. > :03:33.which is it? If you tried to describe it as fast or slow, it is

:03:34. > :03:37.paced out exactly what it needs to be paced at. When he started out

:03:38. > :03:42.this was the type of pace that he made, it opens with one shot in when

:03:43. > :03:50.we get the whole setup, we get one kid, the father, the fight, and the

:03:51. > :03:54.railroad track, and he was saying, the director that he would settle

:03:55. > :03:59.down. It reminded me of how good David Gordon Green was, when he

:04:00. > :04:07.started, it is not a full return to form but it is pretty decent. OK, so

:04:08. > :04:12.Hercules, brought to us by the person you has brought many

:04:13. > :04:19.different things. Welder Wayne the Rock Johnson is Hercules, that is

:04:20. > :04:26.what you need to know. `` Dwayne Johnson. He gives you Dwayne Johnson

:04:27. > :04:33.in Hercules, you know, you have got a lot of digital scenery, it is a 12

:04:34. > :04:38.certificate and I had to say it is a top end 12, there is a lot of bloody

:04:39. > :04:44.fighting but it is essentially a rather silly and rather camp, it is

:04:45. > :04:49.nothing like as bad as it could be. There for five intentional laughs in

:04:50. > :04:52.it, you get to see a range of thespians behaving in pantomime

:04:53. > :04:58.fashion and you can basically taste John Hurt's paycheque. It is the

:04:59. > :05:03.lowest common to nominate but it is at the top end of that. He spent

:05:04. > :05:07.eight months bulking up at the role and he says that they spent about

:05:08. > :05:13.eight minutes on the script, is it as bad as that? I went in thinking

:05:14. > :05:18.it is terrible, but it is not terrible. It is rubbish but it is

:05:19. > :05:23.not terrible rubbish. That is an important distinction. Earth to

:05:24. > :05:28.echo, I suppose Eco must be the obvious? The setup is that there is

:05:29. > :05:31.a bunch of kids and they get a distress signal, they don't know it

:05:32. > :05:35.is a distress signal, they are about to be thrown out of their house

:05:36. > :05:40.because there is a motorway coming through. They find a cute lost alien

:05:41. > :05:52.in need of some help. Does that ring any bells? He looks scared. Can't

:05:53. > :05:58.you stand? Are you all right. Maybe he is just shy. Can you do x`ray

:05:59. > :06:07.vision. He does not know where to look. So the question is what can

:06:08. > :06:14.you do? OK so he is doing a sophisticated piece of surgery. I

:06:15. > :06:28.don't get it, how is it sophisticated. I have got it. Get

:06:29. > :06:35.this, are you getting this? That is crazy! As you can see from that, the

:06:36. > :06:40.idea is that they have filmed it themselves. That makes it

:06:41. > :06:47.21st`century, otherwise, that alien is basically a little bit like other

:06:48. > :06:53.films, they have put everything together from other films. And

:06:54. > :06:57.actually after a while, you think this is so distracting ticking off

:06:58. > :07:02.the movies that this is referencing. It is not bad, it is perfectly

:07:03. > :07:08.passable fun, but it is kind of fun if you have not seen this before, it

:07:09. > :07:16.is the kind of movies that plays for people who have not seen this type.

:07:17. > :07:23.The kids will enjoy it because they will not have that list to click

:07:24. > :07:28.through? I remembered that there was a band that said it was OK to do the

:07:29. > :07:34.Beatles because the Beatles were not around any more. If you have seen

:07:35. > :07:39.it, it is kind of distracting how much it references are the movies,

:07:40. > :07:45.but it is fine, fun, kind of cute, kind of sweet, kind of charming but

:07:46. > :07:51.massively derivative. OK, take us through your best picture? I think

:07:52. > :07:55.perhaps Lady from Shanghai, the Orson Welles story is very

:07:56. > :08:00.interesting, they say that he lived his life backwards, she started with

:08:01. > :08:05.Citizen Kane and then had nothing but fight with studios and made

:08:06. > :08:12.films that caused nothing but trouble. There were huge studio

:08:13. > :08:15.issues, but it has an straw ordinary hall of mirrors, what a great chance

:08:16. > :08:23.to see what is a flawed but still a very fine piece of cinema. Finally,

:08:24. > :08:28.best DVD? I got a lot of flak but I'm standing up for no. It is

:08:29. > :08:31.completely mad, there was an argument, a lot of congregation

:08:32. > :08:39.audiences say that it takes liberty with the story, it takes liberty

:08:40. > :08:44.from the story, that a 600`year`old man hears a voice from space that

:08:45. > :08:49.tells him to build a zoo. I don't remember huge big rock transformers,

:08:50. > :08:54.but it is in the movie because the producer said so. Russell Crowe

:08:55. > :08:59.plays the central role of Noah as an increasingly derange Keiko Warrior,

:09:00. > :09:03.it is a very strange film and a very fine school, the strangest

:09:04. > :09:09.blockbuster of the year. So if there is one film to see this week what

:09:10. > :09:14.will it be? Probably joke, if you are going to stay and watch

:09:15. > :09:22.something on DVD, do watch Noah because it is enjoyably bonkers. You

:09:23. > :09:28.can find out more film news and reviews across the BBC including all

:09:29. > :09:47.of our previous shows, on the BBC website. That is it, thanks for

:09:48. > :09:50.watching, goodbye. Good evening, we have temperatures close to 30

:09:51. > :09:52.degrees and we have had another hot one but it has not
