:00:00. > :00:00.Grand Prix. All that and more at 6. 30pm. Now, it's time for the Film
:00:00. > :00:23.Review. Hello and welcome. To take us
:00:24. > :00:28.through this week's releases, Mark Kerr mode. What have we got? Captain
:00:29. > :00:35.Amercia ` The Winter Soldier, which is the new film in the on`going
:00:36. > :00:39.franchise from Marvel and 20 Feet From Stardom, which shines the
:00:40. > :00:46.spotlight on backing singers. And we have The Past, the new movie from
:00:47. > :00:50.The Winter Soldier, saving the The Winter Soldier, saving the
:00:51. > :00:55.world. The story, he was deep frozen and awakened by Austin Powers and
:00:56. > :00:58.comes to the terms with the new world, the internet and all that
:00:59. > :01:04.stuff. What happens in this film is he starts to question the authority
:01:05. > :01:08.to which he's arguable. Shield and the Government are in league to set
:01:09. > :01:12.this sky`bound surveillance system which will enable them to predict
:01:13. > :01:16.crimes and wipe them out before they happen. As he says, that's not
:01:17. > :01:19.freedom, that's fear. And the way you know there's something
:01:20. > :01:22.particularly dodgy is at the top of the tree is Robert red Ford playing
:01:23. > :01:33.against type as a corporate suit. Here's a clip. Busy in there?
:01:34. > :01:39.Nothing that some marks can fix. I'm here to ask a favour. I want you to
:01:40. > :01:45.call for a vote. The project has to be delayed. It's not a favour, that
:01:46. > :01:52.is a subcommittee favour? Probably nothing. I just need time to make
:01:53. > :01:57.sure it's nothing. Fine. But you got to get iron man to stop by my
:01:58. > :02:02.niece's birthday party. Thank you Sir. Not just a fly`by. He's got to
:02:03. > :02:06.mingle. That's how it works? You get them to come for favours? Yeah.
:02:07. > :02:13.That's the smarter end of the movie and red Ford is well `` Redford is
:02:14. > :02:18.well cast, and that runs throughout the film. The problem with it is
:02:19. > :02:22.that although that's going on in the background, most of the movie is
:02:23. > :02:26.overrun by the running, jumping, shooting and blowing things up
:02:27. > :02:30.action sequences, which after a while start to feel out of place
:02:31. > :02:33.with the subject. What I wanted was more of the character development.
:02:34. > :02:37.There are too many characters. There are too many individuals that never
:02:38. > :02:45.are tied up. None of the characters develop. We get the Black Widow and
:02:46. > :02:49.there are kicks and backflips and we get a whole range of different
:02:50. > :02:54.characters meeting in various circumstances, but almost always
:02:55. > :02:59.interspersed with overextended action sequences. When you have seen
:03:00. > :03:04.what Joss can do, and you get all the sequences and all the stuff you
:03:05. > :03:08.want from this, but you also get solid character development and you
:03:09. > :03:12.care about them. In this it's a problem and `` The target audience
:03:13. > :03:18.perhaps wants a lot more of people flying around and getting shot at?
:03:19. > :03:23.There's no doubt it will take a whole bunch of money. It's a shame
:03:24. > :03:28.since test set up the 1970s paranoia, we are the enany and since
:03:29. > :03:32.that's set up early on, you have higher expectations. This is 21st
:03:33. > :03:40.century now. Somebody is watching us. It's very modern. As you have
:03:41. > :03:46.seen, it's got great reviews. People have been giving it four and five
:03:47. > :03:52.stars. It's fine. It's too long and runny and jumpy and shooty. 20 Feet
:03:53. > :03:58.From Stardom. Backing singers. It's a warm documentary about backing
:03:59. > :04:03.singers and it investigates the idea that that 20 feeT from the front of
:04:04. > :04:07.the stage can be unbridgeable. You have Donald Love performing the
:04:08. > :04:14.vocal performances and worderful footage from ieBG and Tina Turner
:04:15. > :04:16.and you have `` Ike and Tina Turner and you have Stevie Wonder and
:04:17. > :04:20.people talking about how it's sometimes really hard for somebody
:04:21. > :04:25.who is very talented, better singers than they are to make that progress
:04:26. > :04:31.to being a star. The fit many is about being one removed from
:04:32. > :04:35.stardom, but being musically adept. A lot of the time the interviews and
:04:36. > :04:40.conversation spills over into song and people break naturally into
:04:41. > :04:43.song. I saw it in a packed cinema and the audience loved it. They
:04:44. > :04:50.laughed at all the jokes and tapped their feet along with all the songs.
:04:51. > :05:02.A really great feeling. There is no bitterness, because when you see it
:05:03. > :05:04.Dion Warwick or Aretha Flanklin. And they talk about it? The documentary
:05:05. > :05:08.talks about it, the fact that you're talks about it, the fact that you're
:05:09. > :05:18.more talented mean you are more famous and the answer is no. There
:05:19. > :05:32.is talent and there is something else, which is to do with perhaps
:05:33. > :05:32.drive, perhaps ego and it's interesting hearing like Bruce
:05:33. > :05:33.Springsteen saying they don't have the ego. My only criticism of it
:05:34. > :05:33.this ` it beats the act of killing this ` it beats the act of
:05:34. > :05:33.to the best documentary Oscar and to the best documentary Oscar and
:05:34. > :05:37.that's a mistake. Act of killing is an extraordinary piece of work. It's
:05:38. > :05:45.good enough and warm hearted enough to forget and forgive. Now The Past.
:05:46. > :05:49.You are a big Asghar Farhadi fan. What is interesting here is you have
:05:50. > :05:54.at the centre Berenice Bejo. She is a woman in a state of flux in Paris.
:05:55. > :05:58.She is just coming to the end of one mare reasonabling and separated ``
:05:59. > :06:07.marriage and separated from her husband. She's living with a new
:06:08. > :06:12.lover and dealing with various situations and a situation which is
:06:13. > :07:21.nothing, if not fractious. Here's a clip.
:07:22. > :07:32.This is tough stuff? It's great. Berenice Bejo is terrific. We saw
:07:33. > :07:36.her in the Artist. It's a rigorous physicality. This is people caught
:07:37. > :07:39.between one marriage and another and what has happened is she hasn't
:07:40. > :07:44.quite separated from her husband, but she has now a new lover and he
:07:45. > :07:53.is married to a woman who in a coma and her coma becomes a problem in
:07:54. > :08:00.the film. Asghar Farhadi has it's a state of between life add and death.
:08:01. > :08:06.It's between sing `` life and death. It's between sing laRT and couple
:08:07. > :08:12.dom. It's gripping and sometimes it plays out like a thriller and at at
:08:13. > :08:19.centre is the performance from Berenice Bejo. She is just dynamite.
:08:20. > :08:23.Anybody who has been fixing their plumbing or painting their house
:08:24. > :08:28.they're in trouble. It's a sign of mental dislocation. When her
:08:29. > :08:31.husband, soon to be ex`husband arrives, she is redecorating and
:08:32. > :08:35.trying to cover up the memory but it's not succeeding. He manages to
:08:36. > :08:41.get paint all over his clothes. You can read as much into it as you want
:08:42. > :08:46.or see it just as a very, very convincing domestic drama. It's
:08:47. > :08:53.extraordinary seeing Asghar Farhadi working in this genre. Everything
:08:54. > :08:57.rings true. He seems to me to be a genuinely international filmmaker.
:08:58. > :09:00.With a great eye for the foreign? He's a foreigner in France? Yes.
:09:01. > :09:05.This is not his language that he's working in and does it well. All the
:09:06. > :09:11.actors benefit from rehearsal processes. It's based in theatre.
:09:12. > :09:16.You should see it. Terrific. Now Under the Skin, but my friends
:09:17. > :09:24.really love this or hate it. Can't understand what you're on about.
:09:25. > :09:27.Divisive. Scarlett Joe Hanson is an alien. And I think it's one of those
:09:28. > :09:31.things that it doesn't work entirely, but the level of ambition
:09:32. > :09:43.is so high and the sing Lafferty of vision is not `` sing laRT of vision
:09:44. > :09:50.is not playing to everyone. I love to see a film that is singular and
:09:51. > :09:54.ambitious. For those who have not seen Philomena, it's a great watch.
:09:55. > :09:58.It takes certain liberties with the true story, but they work. The idea
:09:59. > :10:03.of turning this journey into a road trip, it works and it's got a great
:10:04. > :10:08.script. Very, very likeable central performances. Coogan and Dench.
:10:09. > :10:11.Chalk and cheese? They are. Very good thing about it, it's funny and
:10:12. > :10:18.serious and I think it's very moving. Definitely worth a watch on
:10:19. > :10:24.DVD. Now a quick reminder that you'll find more film news and
:10:25. > :10:26.reviews from Mark on his B C blog. That's it for this week. Thank you
:10:27. > :10:29.for watching. Goodbye.
