:00:00. > :00:00.That's all on Sportsday at 6.30, now though on BBC News -
:00:00. > :00:24.Hello and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News.
:00:25. > :00:27.To take us through this week's cinema releases is James King,
:00:28. > :00:38.Welcome, James, what have you been watching this week?
:00:39. > :00:46.First up it feels like ages since there has been a new fresh romantic
:00:47. > :00:52.comedy. It is called the The Big Sick and I will tell you about that.
:00:53. > :01:00.From Australia, Hounds of Love, a brutal true story, a kidnap drama.
:01:01. > :01:01.And a big hit in the States, it stars Queen Latifah and is a comedy
:01:02. > :01:20.called girls strip. This is a really interesting take,
:01:21. > :01:24.doesn't work as a film? Yes, there is a lot to do is take about it.
:01:25. > :01:29.Colonel Nang Janney is the writer and the star and he has written it
:01:30. > :01:40.with his partner about their life. -- Kumail Nanjiani. It is about the
:01:41. > :01:45.real-life romance. He is from a traditional Pakistani family were as
:01:46. > :01:50.Emily is a white American, academic and eccentric family. That is the
:01:51. > :01:53.chalk and cheese dynamic for the romantic comedy. Why so it called
:01:54. > :01:58.the Big Sick? There is also an illness which happens to one of the
:01:59. > :02:03.characters. There's a lot happening, a lot of story. The clip is from the
:02:04. > :02:05.beginning of the movie. He is trying to make it as a stand-up comedian
:02:06. > :02:06.and meets And now at the niceties are out
:02:07. > :02:20.of their way, I have to tell you when you yelled at me
:02:21. > :02:22.really put me off. You should not heckle
:02:23. > :02:24.comedians, it's so rude. I just gave a woo-hoo,
:02:25. > :02:28.it's supportive. Yelling anything at
:02:29. > :02:33.a comedian is considering So if I yelled out,
:02:34. > :02:39.you are amazing in bed, Yeah, that would be
:02:40. > :03:07.an accurate heckle. Already it is endearing. The writers
:03:08. > :03:13.are inspired by the greats, Richard Curtis, Annie Hall and tipsy so if
:03:14. > :03:21.you are inspired by those movies, that is a good start. That is one of
:03:22. > :03:25.my favourite films. People have said this is some statement about racial
:03:26. > :03:30.relations in America right now but it is not, it is a true story about
:03:31. > :03:36.two people getting together. Is there anything new in talking about
:03:37. > :03:41.two interracial couples? That is a refreshing thing about this film, it
:03:42. > :03:46.is in there but it is not trying to make a larger statement. It is just
:03:47. > :03:54.about what happened to them. It is very charming. He wrote it in but it
:03:55. > :04:01.is not too self-serving, more affectionate than that? Absolutely,
:04:02. > :04:11.it is a lovely relationship between Kumail Nanjiani and his parents. I
:04:12. > :04:16.know his father from his part in ice age and he is showing us what a good
:04:17. > :04:23.actor he is. I think you could be up for our reward -- and awards for
:04:24. > :04:27.this performance. I love Holly Hunter. She is just nuts in this and
:04:28. > :04:34.brilliantly so. How lovely to go into the summer with sums being
:04:35. > :04:39.genuinely fun. We have not had a fresh romantic comedy for a while.
:04:40. > :04:44.People think we know all the tricks and the cliches but this actually,
:04:45. > :04:50.it has a romantic comedy framework but it is doing new things. Our next
:04:51. > :04:54.film from Australia, I have read lots about it but I know I could not
:04:55. > :05:02.stomach it, talk me through and explain. Again, loosely based on a
:05:03. > :05:08.true story about murders which happened in Perth in Western
:05:09. > :05:16.Australia where a suburban couple were kidnapping teenage girls. What
:05:17. > :05:21.is gripping about this film is that it is not some exploitative horror
:05:22. > :05:25.movie. It is a character study of this couple who do this and why they
:05:26. > :05:35.do it and what is going on in their heads. Specifically, the wife, who
:05:36. > :05:40.she is and what has gone on in her past and why she is on the situation
:05:41. > :05:46.and does what she does. That stops it just being a cardboard cutout
:05:47. > :05:51.horror movie. It is actually about the characters, these
:05:52. > :05:55.three-dimensional characters the kidnappers and the girls they
:05:56. > :06:01.kidnap, the all have their story which has stepped out. This is the
:06:02. > :06:05.first film from Ben Young who captures suburban Australian life
:06:06. > :06:09.very well, disillusionment and a kitchen sink drama really. It is
:06:10. > :06:15.brittle and uncomfortable but very well made. I here you and that he is
:06:16. > :06:22.a talent to watch but I am not sure I have the stomach for that. Girls
:06:23. > :06:30.Trip, on the other hand takes us back into the lighter world.
:06:31. > :06:35.Definitely back into the lighter world, Queen Latifah, college
:06:36. > :06:36.friends go away for the weekend and chaos ensues. Have a look at the
:06:37. > :06:39.clip. What was that you were saying
:06:40. > :06:57.about pent-up energy? # I slay, I slay, I slay all day.#
:06:58. > :07:33.Have a good evening, ladies. Is it fun? Is it silly? It is all of
:07:34. > :07:38.those things, it has a relentless bubbly Nissan boarding about it. It
:07:39. > :07:47.was difficult to find a clip we could play. -- ugliness and
:07:48. > :07:51.bawdiness. Its characters are four confident and successful black woman
:07:52. > :07:57.and you do not have enough of those movies. It is not an Oscars movie,
:07:58. > :08:08.it is joyfully frothy and silly which is why it is refreshing. It is
:08:09. > :08:12.clunky at times but this likeness carries it along. It has been a big
:08:13. > :08:20.hit in the States and this will change things. That is interesting
:08:21. > :08:23.because I was thinking how much I enjoyed hidden figures which was the
:08:24. > :08:29.last time it focused on African American women. The fact that even
:08:30. > :08:35.resonates with you shows what a positive it is about sort of film.
:08:36. > :08:41.Hidden figures is great but it is the Oscar worthy serious movie, this
:08:42. > :08:45.is just joyfully not like that. It is deliberately frothy and flimsy
:08:46. > :08:51.and everyone is having fun and that is the real novelty. It is a good
:08:52. > :08:57.time, as those for younger viewers something which Mark was reading
:08:58. > :09:04.about. This is out no. I could've chosen Dunkirk but everyone has said
:09:05. > :09:10.how great it is, I do not need to add to that. Captain Underpants is a
:09:11. > :09:14.DreamWorks animation, based on the bestselling books. The hypnotise the
:09:15. > :09:24.school principal into believing he is this sk -- this superhero. It is
:09:25. > :09:28.silly and nonstop. It has that self reflecting quality that adults
:09:29. > :09:38.alike. There are loads of jokes about pants. The main antagonist is
:09:39. > :09:47.-- the main protagonist is called Professor Pippi pants. What are you
:09:48. > :09:51.going to pick for us? I'm going to choose life which is about
:09:52. > :09:57.astronnaut springing back Martian life form to earth. It starts out as
:09:58. > :10:03.a single cell organism and grows. When you watch this, you're thinking
:10:04. > :10:11.alien by Ridley Scott but it is not as good, a lot of similarities,
:10:12. > :10:16.mainly set in a spaceship. I would say watch it for a Jake Gyllenhaal,
:10:17. > :10:22.the main star, he always brings melancholy to what he does. He says
:10:23. > :10:26.some really interesting things. It is familiar as a science-fiction
:10:27. > :10:34.movie but Jake Gyllenhaal makes it something more than run-of-the-mill.
:10:35. > :10:40.OK, thank you very much. Thank you very much indeed, that is it for
:10:41. > :10:53.this week. Whatever you're seeing, enjoyed, see you next week.
:10:54. > :11:00.Some wet evenings this weekend if you're heading to the cinema one of
:11:01. > :11:01.which
