:00:00. > :00:08.weekend, we'll hear from Andy Murray who si still going strong at the

:00:09. > :00:12.US Open and we've got the latest on the driver war at Mercedes as Nico

:00:13. > :00:21.Rosberg says sorry for crashing into Lewis Hamilton.

:00:22. > :00:25.Hello and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News.

:00:26. > :00:27.To take us through this week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode.

:00:28. > :00:41.We have a very mixed bag. We have Mystery Road, an Australian thriller

:00:42. > :00:48.which crosses generic boundaries. We have If I Stay, based on the young

:00:49. > :00:50.adult bestseller by Gail Foreman. And we have Obvious Child, a

:00:51. > :00:56.romantic comedy with a twist which has caused some eruptions in

:00:57. > :01:01.America. Mystery Road and the Australian outback. Mystery Road is

:01:02. > :01:08.a thriller, a murder mystery, a Western. It start Eric Peterson as

:01:09. > :01:12.Detective Joe Swan, he has been away from his hometown in the big smoke

:01:13. > :01:16.he comes back to his hometown where he finds himself investigating a

:01:17. > :01:30.harrowing murder mystery, here is a clip. You know I have had nothing

:01:31. > :01:36.like this. Sooner or later, you were going to get it. I guess today is

:01:37. > :01:44.your lucky day. What can you give me? I've got every spare wheel in

:01:45. > :01:52.the drug squad. Frank's living tomorrow. You're just going to have

:01:53. > :02:01.to write their back for a while `` ride bareback for a while. Things

:02:02. > :02:20.have changed since you've been away. We've got a young girl stuffed onto

:02:21. > :02:26.the highway... I know. I know. I think you can tell the brooding

:02:27. > :02:31.sense of menace. What is interesting is as he starts to investigate this

:02:32. > :02:35.mystery, discovers a widening web of drugs and sexual exploitation but

:02:36. > :02:38.the solution to the crime isn't really the point. The point is a

:02:39. > :02:46.story of a man who is caught between two worlds. Eric Peterson is

:02:47. > :02:50.described as an aborigine copper who turns on his own people. He is also

:02:51. > :02:53.treated with suspicion by the indigenous community who think he

:02:54. > :02:57.has crossed the line and gone over to the other side. The film is about

:02:58. > :03:02.somebody trying to find their own identity between two communities.

:03:03. > :03:11.Generically it is interesting. It takes place in locations like

:03:12. > :03:15.mystery creak and slaughter Hill but actually it is like a very brooding

:03:16. > :03:22.film, interested in cultural, racial, economic politics but very

:03:23. > :03:29.western. The central character wears a Stetson and carries a Winchester.

:03:30. > :03:35.It is playing with Jonah convention. `` genre convention. In the past he

:03:36. > :03:40.has made more experimental films. In this case he has made a generic

:03:41. > :03:44.movie which can be seen as a cross between Chinatown and no country for

:03:45. > :03:51.old men, exploring broiling tensions but within the framework of a murder

:03:52. > :03:56.mystery. I thought it was very impressive some people might have

:03:57. > :04:00.found it too generic, it held my attention and Eric Peterson is

:04:01. > :04:04.terrific as the central conflict it antihero, I thought it was very

:04:05. > :04:10.impressive. Some people have complained that there are loose ends

:04:11. > :04:15.of the murder mystery which are not tied up, but for me that was not the

:04:16. > :04:22.point, it was the wrong detail. If I Stay. It is based on a young adult

:04:23. > :04:30.best seller, featuring a young girl who is this a borrowed `` who's

:04:31. > :04:33.disembodied spirit walks a hospital. She sees herself being visited by

:04:34. > :04:38.her friends and her family after a car crash. During the course of this

:04:39. > :04:45.strange experience, we see her unfolding relationship with a

:04:46. > :04:54.character who loves the rocket are, she loves the cello `` the rock

:04:55. > :04:58.guitar. Obviously there is a degree of mawkish sentimentality. If you

:04:59. > :05:05.think of a record like leader of the pack, there is a great pop culture

:05:06. > :05:13.thing, romance and tragedy. Within those combines it does it better

:05:14. > :05:17.than you think. The script is sharper than you might expect, the

:05:18. > :05:26.lead actress actually looks like she is playing the cello. It is what it

:05:27. > :05:30.is, I think its target audience is the young teen audience, but I think

:05:31. > :05:34.it does what it does rather well. It is not as good as the fault in our

:05:35. > :05:41.stars, which I thought was rather more profound, but it is raised by

:05:42. > :05:46.decent performances and a nice cameo from the grandfather character who

:05:47. > :05:56.lifts the level higher. The third film of the week is Obvious Child.

:05:57. > :06:01.This has divided audiences in the states. A comedian finds herself

:06:02. > :06:06.pregnant and is clear on the course of action she's going to take. I

:06:07. > :06:16.can't believe he walked into the store. That is a sign. Saying? That

:06:17. > :06:22.we should start our beautiful life together. I am not a straight guy

:06:23. > :06:27.but my guess is most of them would hate that gift. You are saying a guy

:06:28. > :06:36.doesn't want a drunk pregnant girl in a box? Maybe you want to tell

:06:37. > :06:41.him. Why? You don't owe him, you don't know him. Maybe he deserves to

:06:42. > :06:45.know that this happened, that I am not a psycho and I'm going to get an

:06:46. > :06:52.abortion. If I got someone pregnant, I would want to know.

:06:53. > :06:56.In America it raised hackles, one commentator says, if America laughs

:06:57. > :07:00.at this, America is the on redemption, because it deals with

:07:01. > :07:04.abortion. That is not the central theme but the fact it deals with it

:07:05. > :07:08.at all is unusual in mainstream cinema. It is more interesting to

:07:09. > :07:13.concentrate on whether it is a good movie and it really is. It has very

:07:14. > :07:17.well drawn characters. Each one has complexities, whether it is mothers,

:07:18. > :07:23.fathers, lovers, friends, they are all drawn in integrates strokes ``

:07:24. > :07:29.intricate strokes. It is up and Frank but not tub thumping, it is

:07:30. > :07:33.clear in its agenda but it is not an agenda movie. The whole thing leads

:07:34. > :07:36.up to Valentine's Day and could save twist on what you would think of as

:07:37. > :07:44.the sentimental, mawkish romantic comedy. I am surprised it has rough

:07:45. > :07:49.at `` has ruffled as many feathers as it has but I thought it was very

:07:50. > :07:52.worthwhile. Let's talk about the one that you would pick out of

:07:53. > :07:55.everything that is out there. The The Cabinet of Dr Caligari has just

:07:56. > :07:59.been released, I imagine you have seen it in the way that everybody

:08:00. > :08:02.has seen it, even if they haven't. It is described as the first ever

:08:03. > :08:06.horror movie which isn't entirely true. It is an expressionist

:08:07. > :08:13.masterpiece from the silent period, a story of a hypnotist who is sent

:08:14. > :08:16.out to do his evil bidding and every single frame is archetypal. Every

:08:17. > :08:21.frame, you have seen echoing through cinema for 100 years since. It

:08:22. > :08:27.doesn't matter if you get colour or sound or 3D, you still see the ghost

:08:28. > :08:30.of Dr Caligari. It is coming out on Blu`ray next month. If you get a

:08:31. > :08:33.chance to see it, check it out because it is worth seeing it

:08:34. > :08:38.projected and it is a beautiful restoration. A strong

:08:39. > :08:44.recommendation. What about if we are sitting at home on the sofa? Same

:08:45. > :08:46.colour diary is a masterpiece is not controversial, saying that

:08:47. > :08:52.Transcendence is worth seeing is slightly more so. `` saying Dr

:08:53. > :08:56.Caligari is a masterpiece is not controversial. I think it is

:08:57. > :09:01.ambitious and interesting 70s inflected science`fiction movie, it

:09:02. > :09:04.looks great. It is not a Johnny Depp film despite the fact he is right

:09:05. > :09:06.there on the front, it is kind of a poor bet any film, it is a film

:09:07. > :09:17.about ideas `` call it is true it does not work for

:09:18. > :09:22.everybody, it kind of failed in cinemas. I think it is really worth

:09:23. > :09:26.giving a second that. If you like Samaras, Silent running,

:09:27. > :09:30.science`fiction films are about something. It does not fit all its

:09:31. > :09:37.target but I like the fact it is ambitious. If it didn't succeed the

:09:38. > :09:40.first time around, maybe it is about to be revived? That assumed critics

:09:41. > :09:46.have any say whatsoever in what people say and I have yet to have

:09:47. > :09:55.that proven! Thank you very much! A quick reminder before we go:

:09:56. > :09:59.reviews from across the BBC online, including all our previous shows.

:10:00. > :10:13.That's it for this week. Thanks for watching. Goodbye.

:10:14. > :10:18.Whether it involves a trip to the cinema or staying at home with a

:10:19. > :10:24.DVD, many of you are making plans and the weather is set fair. A lot

:10:25. > :10:29.of dry weather around this weekend and some good sunny spells as well.

:10:30. > :10:30.Once you are in that sunshine it should feel warm, not desperately
