:00:00. > :00:00.As Australia and New Zealand prepare to do battle in the Rugby league
:00:00. > :00:11.World Cup final, we will ask if the tournament has been a success. That
:00:12. > :00:22.is at 630. Now it is time for the film review.
:00:23. > :00:29.Hello and welcome to the Film Review on BBC News. To take us through this
:00:30. > :00:32.week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode. So Mark, what do we have
:00:33. > :00:38.this week? This is the week we see the release
:00:39. > :00:46.of Saving Mr Banks. Mary Poppins is one of the greatest films ever made.
:00:47. > :00:52.We have day of the flowers in which two sisters travel to Cuba.
:00:53. > :01:00.And we have carried, do we need a remake of the 1976 classic? ``
:01:01. > :01:05.Carrie. There are people in the world who do
:01:06. > :01:12.not like Mary Poppins, I have not met any of them. The story of Saving
:01:13. > :01:17.Mr Banks is that PL Travers goes to Los Angeles to do business with Walt
:01:18. > :01:26.Disney. She needs the money, and what Disney does want to make the
:01:27. > :01:31.film. She has a real contempt for what Walt Disney does. But she needs
:01:32. > :01:37.the cash. After some persuasion, she decides to go to Los Angeles where
:01:38. > :01:54.she meets Walt Disney is it `` what Disney. `` walked Disney.
:01:55. > :01:59.Here you are maths. You cannot imagine how excited I am to finally
:02:00. > :02:27.meet you. It is an honour. It is so nice to meet you. I cannot
:02:28. > :02:33.believe I have PL Travers right here in my office. After almost 20 years.
:02:34. > :02:38.20 long years. I wish you could have seen me there, being as a whippet, a
:02:39. > :02:49.racehorse eyeballs. But look at you. `` racehorse I was. I love it. There
:02:50. > :02:55.is so much to like about it. I think Mary Poppins is a wonderful film and
:02:56. > :03:01.it is nice to see somebody paid tribute to it. This is an attempt to
:03:02. > :03:07.find the roots of her character. But the real meat of it takes place in
:03:08. > :03:13.California where she is resisting the film being made and everybody is
:03:14. > :03:20.doing their best. Emma Thompson is brilliant at being very snappy, very
:03:21. > :03:27.court, very short, but all the way through it, you also believe in her
:03:28. > :03:33.own passion. It is something she loves. She does not want to give it
:03:34. > :03:39.up. She never reconciled herself with the movie. I think the
:03:40. > :03:46.relationship on`screen between her and Tom Hanks version of Walt Disney
:03:47. > :03:50.is brilliant. He has just the right amount of steel underneath the
:03:51. > :03:59.charm. There are some wonderful scenes with the Sherman brothers.
:04:00. > :04:07.Some fantastic songs in the film, they are making them up and she just
:04:08. > :04:12.says no, no, no,. I think the film will work for any audience. Emma
:04:13. > :04:18.Thompson's performance is to reflect. I hope that she gets awards
:04:19. > :04:26.recognition. Quite often, comic performances are overlooked. She is
:04:27. > :04:32.snippy, witty, she is hard to like, but impossible not to love.
:04:33. > :04:36.Day of the flowers. Two sisters take their father's
:04:37. > :04:46.Ashes to Cuba where they want to scatter them on the eponymous day of
:04:47. > :04:56.the flowers. There is a romantic element, a family story. What I
:04:57. > :05:02.thought was charming about it is that it is very ambitious in the
:05:03. > :05:11.amount of different stories `` storage plans `` story strand it
:05:12. > :05:15.attempts to tie up. It does an impressive job of taking all these
:05:16. > :05:22.disparate strands and making them work in a way that, by the time you
:05:23. > :05:28.get to the end of it, you do care how it works out. You do genuinely
:05:29. > :05:34.care about the characters. It is not perfect, but I thought it was a
:05:35. > :05:39.sweet, charming movie. Also, the romance of Cuba. The reality of
:05:40. > :05:45.Cuba, great place though it is, is very different from its romance. And
:05:46. > :05:49.on this, one of the sisters is very political, the other is a
:05:50. > :05:58.fashionista. It plays those ideas against it each other `` against
:05:59. > :06:08.each other. Stephen King's first novel, the
:06:09. > :06:12.story of a young girl with a fanatically religious mother who is
:06:13. > :06:14.trying to stop her daughter from maturing. The daughter develops
:06:15. > :06:37.telekinetic abilities. It is a trick. You see? It is going
:06:38. > :06:47.to be OK. It is not too late. Do not doing this for me. I will have to
:06:48. > :07:01.tell that boy the truth. From that sin was born and other, the worst
:07:02. > :07:18.sin. I'm warning you, mother. Please don't do this. There will be a
:07:19. > :07:22.judgement, carry. `` Carrie. Carrie is really sturdy story, well
:07:23. > :07:29.written, an interesting story about a mother and daughter. The way that
:07:30. > :07:37.girls can gang up on each other, their cruelty. This is a perfunctory
:07:38. > :07:43.retelling of it. On one hand, it is very faithful to the novel, but you
:07:44. > :07:51.kind of wonder what the point of it is? The first film was so well
:07:52. > :08:01.done, an operatic version of the novel. People of our age remember
:08:02. > :08:09.the final jumper at the end of the film. This is not a total failure,
:08:10. > :08:14.but it is very ordinarily in its retelling of the story. It is
:08:15. > :08:23.updated slightly with mobile phone footage. The actresses are very
:08:24. > :08:28.good. But the problem is if you have seen Carrie already, there is
:08:29. > :08:33.nothing new. If it brings a new audience to the story, fair enough.
:08:34. > :08:40.But I am surprised by how ordinarily it is.
:08:41. > :08:51.The Hunger Games to. Yes, it pretty much ups the ante.
:08:52. > :08:54.This is about what the games mean in terms of oppressing the rest of
:08:55. > :09:00.society. Jennifer Lawrence is absolutely fantastic. I'm not sure
:09:01. > :09:05.how they are going to do the next one. This is really good,
:09:06. > :09:13.intelligent, teen entertainment with a real edge and a fantastic central
:09:14. > :09:19.portrayal by Jennifer Lawrence. And the made`for`TV aspect of utter
:09:20. > :09:27.cruelty. It says a lot about reality television. Satirical, but still
:09:28. > :09:47.tough. It is a roller`coaster ride. And the DVD is Alan Partridge, Alpha
:09:48. > :09:55.Papa. I think it works. I went to see it in a cinema and I laughed all
:09:56. > :10:03.the way through it. The story is that there is a siege at the radio
:10:04. > :10:10.station for Alan Partridge works. I thought it was consistently funny.
:10:11. > :10:17.Yes, it is a TV spin off, but if you want something that is going to make
:10:18. > :10:22.you laugh, it will do the job. If you want something on a cold
:10:23. > :10:27.November weekend, it will work. A quick reminder before we go that
:10:28. > :10:30.you'll find more film news and reviews from Mark online.
:10:31. > :10:32.That's at bbc.co.uk/markkermode. That's it for this week though.
:10:33. > :10:50.Thanks for watching. Goodbye. Good evening. This weather front has
:10:51. > :10:58.pushed further southwards bringing patchy, light rain, but quite behind
:10:59. > :11:03.it `` but behind it, quite a clearance. The best of the sunshine
:11:04. > :11:08.in eastern Scotland and the North East of England. The wind will start
:11:09. > :11:14.to ease off, but the strongest of the wind this evening will move into
:11:15. > :11:20.the North Sea. Over the next few days, those winds easing down. It
:11:21. > :11:25.will stay dry for the bulk of the weekend. Those winds pushing off
