0:00:00 > 0:00:00of Team GB's medal hopefuls ahead of 16 days of competition across 11
0:00:00 > 0:00:07different ovens. That is all to come, but now it is time for The
0:00:07 > 0:00:17Film Review.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Hello and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News.
0:00:22 > 0:00:26To take us through this week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode.
0:00:26 > 0:00:31So Mark, what do we have this week?
0:00:31 > 0:00:38We have Black Panther, which opens on Tuesday. We have Pad Man, based
0:00:38 > 0:00:48on a true, inspiring story. And 50 shades, it all comes to an end.
0:00:48 > 0:00:56Black Panther, why isn't it opening until Tuesday?I presume it is
0:00:56 > 0:01:00because it will give it a long, opening weekend. It has been eagerly
0:01:00 > 0:01:12awaited. At the beginning of the film, it is a technologically
0:01:12 > 0:01:18advanced society and they must keep their secrets away from the rest of
0:01:18 > 0:01:23the world in case it falls into the wrong hands. The movie plays great
0:01:23 > 0:01:41attention to detail. Here is a clip. Remote system activated.Wait, which
0:01:41 > 0:02:03side of the road is it?Just drive. Let's go! Look at your suit. You
0:02:03 > 0:02:18have been taking bullets.Run around the track.
0:02:22 > 0:02:33Show off. That is the most generic stuff. Its strengths are threefold.
0:02:33 > 0:02:42It looks great. It is superbly realised will stop you feel you are
0:02:42 > 0:02:47in the world and it is well evoked. The second thing, it sounds great,
0:02:47 > 0:02:52everything from the shop dialogue to the superb music keeps the action
0:02:52 > 0:02:55moving along. It really involves you in the characters. It is well
0:02:55 > 0:03:04played, the cast Angela Bassett, it is a really good cast. But the most
0:03:04 > 0:03:09important thing is, you believe in the world of the film. You believe
0:03:09 > 0:03:16in the characters and you know and understand the characters and both
0:03:16 > 0:03:22it -- motivation. I am not a comic book fan. The thing about this is,
0:03:22 > 0:03:26it works on its own terms as a stand-alone piece. There has been a
0:03:26 > 0:03:31lot written about the importance of this movie at this moment. But it
0:03:31 > 0:03:34will only work if the film itself works as a rip-roaring piece of
0:03:34 > 0:03:41entertainment and it does.It is important, but I can look at that
0:03:41 > 0:03:46and say, as well documented on this programme, action films are not my
0:03:46 > 0:03:50thing but they are the thing of my other half. Our debate will be, is
0:03:50 > 0:03:54it two hours of my life I will never get back and she will say, no, we
0:03:54 > 0:04:00have to go and see it.You get the spectacle, all the stuff you want
0:04:00 > 0:04:03and it does look and sound wonderful. But you know the
0:04:03 > 0:04:07characters, you like them and understand them. This is a world
0:04:07 > 0:04:13where there are no gender imbalances you often get. Women are on an equal
0:04:13 > 0:04:17playing field. When they have the big fight sequences, even I
0:04:17 > 0:04:21understood who everyone was, who they were fighting, why they were
0:04:21 > 0:04:25fighting and what they were trying to do with their time. As a piece of
0:04:25 > 0:04:32drama, it is well laid out. I enjoyed it.I might have a hope. I
0:04:32 > 0:04:36am normally nudging going, what? Who is this person? Why are they doing
0:04:36 > 0:04:48that?No, I understand it.You give me hope.Pad Man. Sounds unusual? It
0:04:48 > 0:04:59is a man in India who invented a machine for making cheap sanitary
0:04:59 > 0:05:06pads. The hears a newlywed young man who doesn't understand why his new
0:05:06 > 0:05:11bride spends five days every month out of the house. Then he is ashamed
0:05:11 > 0:05:15why the women around him suffer every month. He designs a machine to
0:05:15 > 0:05:19make low-cost sanitary pads, which will not only protect the health of
0:05:19 > 0:05:23the women but provide employment. But he does so in a culture in which
0:05:23 > 0:05:28there is a lot of shame around this subject. The director of the film
0:05:28 > 0:05:33said he wanted to make the story as accessible as possible. He does, it
0:05:33 > 0:05:36has slapstick comedy, music sequences, laughs, romance and
0:05:36 > 0:05:42tension. It is a joyful and uplifting film. It is telling the
0:05:42 > 0:05:47story, which has its roots in a real-life story. It is a
0:05:47 > 0:05:51fictionalised version of a real-life story, but it does stick close to
0:05:51 > 0:05:55the truth. It is charmingly done and playing to the widest possible
0:05:55 > 0:06:00audience and succeeding in taking that story and making it completely
0:06:00 > 0:06:05accessible it is charming and uplifting. Another hit.Fantastic,
0:06:05 > 0:06:19wonderful story.Based on a true story, which is more than be said
0:06:19 > 0:06:23the Fifty Shades. We do have twilight to thank for this. The
0:06:23 > 0:06:30story is, having taint Christian Grey, Anastasia must see if she can
0:06:30 > 0:06:33find independence and happiness within their marriage. Here is the
0:06:33 > 0:06:43clip.You do want to have kids someday?Someday, sure.You don't
0:06:43 > 0:06:51really sound sure. You know what I am sure about? It is great steak.
0:06:51 > 0:07:01Christian? Do you not want to have kids?Of course. One day, just not
0:07:01 > 0:07:13now. I am not ready to share you with anyone.He doesn't want
0:07:13 > 0:07:22children. I can tell her that now. There is a narrative. It is easy to
0:07:22 > 0:07:28sneer at the Fifty Shades movies because they are not very good. The
0:07:28 > 0:07:31first one, they tried to do something interesting, but it was
0:07:31 > 0:07:42too restricted. The second one was directed and it stuck to the ear
0:07:42 > 0:07:48scraping dialogue of the source. It is badly written, the actors are
0:07:48 > 0:07:53doing their best. James Foley is directing on autopilot. He has been
0:07:53 > 0:07:58given this as a safe pair of hands. It ends up looking like a promo
0:07:58 > 0:08:04simply for a glamorous lifestyle for fast cars and designer apartments.
0:08:04 > 0:08:08Although there is some kinky fetters vision, it is very peripheral. What
0:08:08 > 0:08:15the film is interested in, look back Private Jet! It is a film about
0:08:15 > 0:08:20possessions and about those kind of aspirations. In the end it ends up
0:08:20 > 0:08:26looking like a commercial or pop promo. It makes you look back to the
0:08:26 > 0:08:31days of nine and a half weeks and think wow, what a ground-breaking,
0:08:31 > 0:08:35Citizen Kane like a movie that was. I don't know why people get angry
0:08:35 > 0:08:40because it is playing to a certain audience who are devoted to it. It
0:08:40 > 0:08:46will pack the audience is out on the first weekend. I am clearly not the
0:08:46 > 0:08:50target audience. As a cinema goer, the first one was the only one that
0:08:50 > 0:08:56was vaguely interesting and the next two are just dull. You cannot
0:08:56 > 0:09:02criticise the cast. If anybody gave you that dialogue to me, Laurence
0:09:02 > 0:09:07Olivier would struggle to deliver some of those lines, which are on
0:09:07 > 0:09:15the level of everything, is everything all right? Can I get you
0:09:15 > 0:09:23a Latte.I think I will sleep Black Panther. Have you seen Phantom
0:09:23 > 0:09:28thread again, the last time we met you had seen it four times. No, I
0:09:28 > 0:09:34have not seen it again. I love Johnny Greenwood's score. Has been
0:09:34 > 0:09:39Oscar-nominated. People say they don't like the central character.
0:09:39 > 0:09:45You are not meant to like him, he is meant to be difficult. Leslie
0:09:45 > 0:09:54Manville steals the show. I think it is the best film since Punch-drunk
0:09:54 > 0:10:04Love and they make a romance double bill. I would watch Phantom thread
0:10:04 > 0:10:17again but alongside Punch-drunk Love.There is something about it.
0:10:17 > 0:10:22There was a debate whether the costumes he designs were
0:10:22 > 0:10:24deliberately not very good. Everybody says he is a fabulous
0:10:24 > 0:10:30dress designer but the first thing he designs has somebody dressed up
0:10:30 > 0:10:37like the Queen of hearts. But that is kind of the point, I like it.The
0:10:37 > 0:10:45DVD, Loving Vincent. It reminds me of art conversation last week when I
0:10:45 > 0:10:51said can you watch Blade Runner on a DVD, it is the same about Loving
0:10:51 > 0:10:59Vincent.Narrative is a bit flimsy, it is about going back to find out
0:10:59 > 0:11:07what happened in Vincent Riendeau off's lie. I have seen it on the big
0:11:07 > 0:11:13screen and the small screen and it has the same... It is hypnotising,
0:11:13 > 0:11:18like watching paintings you know, moving around.Slightly odd, but
0:11:18 > 0:11:25stunning.If you have it on DVD, you can go back and watch it again and
0:11:25 > 0:11:31marvelling at the hours of work that must have gone into creating it.Six
0:11:31 > 0:11:38years of painting to create the film.Astonishing.Thank you. A
0:11:38 > 0:11:42quick reminder, you can find all the film News and reviews across the BBC
