:00:00. > :00:19.All that and much more at 6:30pm. Now it is time for the Film Review.

:00:20. > :00:22.Hello and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News.

:00:23. > :00:25.To take us through this week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode.

:00:26. > :00:37.Well, as I'm sure you must have noticed, there is a new Bridget

:00:38. > :00:42.Jones movie, Bridget Jones's baby. Very different, we have The Clan, an

:00:43. > :00:49.Argentinian crime thriller. And something very unusual, Hunt For The

:00:50. > :00:55.Wilderpeople from New Zealand. Bridget Jones won, I liked, Bridget

:00:56. > :00:59.Jones two, no. How is Bridget Jones three? It is somewhere in the

:01:00. > :01:07.middle. Bridget Jones is back older but not necessarily wiser. We start

:01:08. > :01:13.with her 43rd birthday and we wonder how she gets here again? Then fate

:01:14. > :01:19.throws not one but two men in her path. One is Colin Firth's Mark

:01:20. > :01:22.Darcy for whom she still holds a flame but then Patrick Dempsey's

:01:23. > :01:33.online dating magnate who she meets at a muddy festival and she spends

:01:34. > :01:36.the night in a glamping yurt. Then, it is not a plot spoiler because it

:01:37. > :01:41.is the title, she finds out she's pregnant that is not sure which of

:01:42. > :01:49.the two is the father. Here is the clip. You are single,

:01:50. > :01:58.right? I suppose so. How did you two meet?

:01:59. > :02:06.LAUGHTER It is sort of a funny story, sort

:02:07. > :02:12.of! You see, a few months ago, on the fourth of the month I met Jack

:02:13. > :02:18.at a music festival. Right. And we got on very well. And sort of, had,

:02:19. > :02:25.relations. And the next thing, that is to say on the 11th of the month,

:02:26. > :02:29.at Jude's baby's christening, to be precise, following the consumption

:02:30. > :02:34.of a lot of alcohol, Mark and I had similar relations. And this is the

:02:35. > :02:38.funny part. Owing to these relations, the resulting life form

:02:39. > :02:47.currently residing in my tummy could in fact be either of yours.

:02:48. > :02:53.I love the Italian waiter. You laughed three times in that clip! Is

:02:54. > :02:57.a comedy makes you laugh six times it counts as a comedy so that easily

:02:58. > :03:00.passed. The screenplay is co-written by Emma Thomson who has given

:03:01. > :03:05.herself the best lines. Every time she is on screen it is relief funny

:03:06. > :03:10.and almost every line she delivers is funny. Elsewhere, it is not so

:03:11. > :03:16.even. It is very broad comedy, some gags work and some don't. Some are

:03:17. > :03:23.past their tell by date. There is a routine about the gangland style

:03:24. > :03:28.dance and a joke about cats which look like Hitler. That goes back to

:03:29. > :03:32.the birth of the Internet. There is a funny scene with a revolving door.

:03:33. > :03:37.And there is a huge amount of goodwill towards this character.

:03:38. > :03:42.People do want this character, they root for the character of Bridget

:03:43. > :03:45.Jones. Colin Firth looks spectacularly anguished in that

:03:46. > :03:50.quite British way that he does or through the film. It is not great,

:03:51. > :03:54.it is uneven. Every minute Emma Thompson is on screen, it is

:03:55. > :03:59.terrific and for the rest of it, it is good enough. It is quite a relief

:04:00. > :04:06.that it is not two posh British Loucks fighting for her, there is a

:04:07. > :04:12.token American? Yes but there are is nothing you have not seen before. --

:04:13. > :04:18.British blokes. It is a bit like meeting an old friend. Sometimes it

:04:19. > :04:23.is awkward and sometimes it is different. But McDonald's has the

:04:24. > :04:29.same hamburger every day. I am not sure you want to liken this to a

:04:30. > :04:36.fast food chain! I just threw my pen across the table! Shall we move onto

:04:37. > :04:46.The Clan? The story, which is rooted in reality is about the Puccio

:04:47. > :04:50.family. This family hides this hideous kidnapping and murder.

:04:51. > :04:54.Essentially, what the film does is counter pose scenes of Thomas the

:04:55. > :05:04.city with scenes of really grim and grisly violence. -- domesticity.

:05:05. > :05:16.This is done by the director using upbeat pop music counter exposed

:05:17. > :05:23.with scenes of grim violence. There is the sense that this microcosm

:05:24. > :05:29.represents something much larger and more sleeping corruption. And there

:05:30. > :05:42.is an absolutely terrific performance by the lead actor who is

:05:43. > :05:45.the white-haired steely eyed father, played by Guillermo Francella. He

:05:46. > :05:51.keeps saying I am doing this for you. It is genuinely uncomfortable

:05:52. > :05:54.viewing as it is meant to be but razor sharp stylistically. It is one

:05:55. > :06:02.of those films you never relax into the Cusiter such -- you never relax

:06:03. > :06:08.into because it is such a hard-hitting story. In those

:06:09. > :06:12.Argentinian films the government is generally the bad guy in the

:06:13. > :06:17.background. It is absolutely background noise all the way

:06:18. > :06:22.through. The television and radio is on. It is rooted very clearly in its

:06:23. > :06:27.time period. All the time you get the sense you are watching a small

:06:28. > :06:32.version of something which is much wider. There is one section when a

:06:33. > :06:36.colleague says the faces of the boss has changed but give it a while and

:06:37. > :06:41.everything will go back to normal, and normal means quite terrible.

:06:42. > :06:54.There are moments which are genuinely bone chilling. Now the

:06:55. > :06:57.Hunt For The Wilderpeople. You said wilder people. I thought it was

:06:58. > :07:04.wilder people but it is more like wildebeest. It is a hit which

:07:05. > :07:11.deserves to do well in cinemas here. It is the story of a young orphan,

:07:12. > :07:15.Ricky, played by Julian Denison who is sent to live on a rural farm with

:07:16. > :07:23.foster parents a lap and uncle Ted. Here a clip which gives you a taste

:07:24. > :07:27.of the tone of the film -- aren't a la and uncle Ted. I will need to

:07:28. > :07:36.inspect your property to make sure it is up to our high standard. Fine.

:07:37. > :07:43.What do you think? Yes, cool. We will come in in eight weeks or so

:07:44. > :07:51.just to check on... Who is that Crocodile Dundee Guy? That is my

:07:52. > :07:59.husband Hector. He is giving the pig at AD back. I see he has a rifle.

:08:00. > :08:06.Just keep it away from this little guy. Who knows what he is capable

:08:07. > :08:12.of? So he is all yours. No returns! Just joking! You have got my number

:08:13. > :08:20.so give me a call. Goodbye, Ricky. Goodbye, Ricky.

:08:21. > :08:23.I laughed six times! It is more consistently funny than Bridget

:08:24. > :08:30.Jones but it is also more consistently poignant. What happens

:08:31. > :08:35.is the young boy and Hec played by Sam Neill who you saw coming out of

:08:36. > :08:40.the wilderness, they go into the wilderness tomorrow. The film is

:08:41. > :08:45.about their relationship and the way they bicker and bond. It is really

:08:46. > :08:51.poignant and really moving. It is often funny but in that strange

:08:52. > :08:56.off-kilter, something is to do with the timing. It has a wonderful

:08:57. > :09:00.rhythm to it. The scenery is fantastic but the film focuses in on

:09:01. > :09:05.the central relationships with the characters. It does that thing you

:09:06. > :09:09.want all movies to do, you end up caring about them. You end up caring

:09:10. > :09:16.what happens and wanting things to work out for them. I saw this with a

:09:17. > :09:20.bunch of different people and young and old alike all really enjoyed it.

:09:21. > :09:26.They all got something out of it. Is it a bit like the animation Up? A

:09:27. > :09:33.grumpy, overweight guy and a young kid, they should not get on but they

:09:34. > :09:37.do. Until you mentioned that, that had not occurred to me but now I

:09:38. > :09:40.will not be able to get it out of my head! What I will say is go and see

:09:41. > :09:47.it, it is really terrific and really different. It is quite a good week.

:09:48. > :09:53.Your Best of the week? Captain Fantastic. It is about a family

:09:54. > :09:58.living in the forest. Is he the best father in the world or the worst

:09:59. > :10:04.father in the world? They have to go into civilisation for a funeral. It

:10:05. > :10:08.is terrific performances by the entire ensemble, particularly George

:10:09. > :10:12.Mackay who continues to be one of our brightest rising stars and a

:10:13. > :10:22.great central performance by the go Mortenson. And Green Room is your

:10:23. > :10:28.recommendation? This is out on DVD. This is a story about a punk band

:10:29. > :10:33.who end up playing in a rural road house which turns out to be full of

:10:34. > :10:37.neo-Nazis led by Patrick Stewart. They then get trapped in the Green

:10:38. > :10:53.Room after something terrifying happens. It is a really stripped

:10:54. > :10:59.down siege/ stroke movie. It has really great performances. I did not

:11:00. > :11:08.know which way it was going. It was a bit like Assault on Precinct 13,

:11:09. > :11:15.meets River's Edge, via Deliverance. Any of those films I would go and

:11:16. > :11:21.see. Probably starting with Hunter the wilder people. That really

:11:22. > :11:25.deserves your patronage. Mark, thank you. -- Hunt For The Wilderpeople.
