:00:22. > :00:40.Hello, and welcome to The Film Review. Here he is Mark Kermode. . A
:00:41. > :00:55.mixed bag. Independence Day Resurgence. Raman Raghav 2.0, an
:00:56. > :01:02.Indian noir. And Elvis Nixon. Independence Day. One review I read
:01:03. > :01:14.said it shows no sign of intelligence life. -- intelligent.
:01:15. > :01:29.I love that the original. It was funny and witty. The story is, Will
:01:30. > :01:32.Smith was in the original, it was too expensive to get him back, he
:01:33. > :01:39.said he wanted millions of dollars, they said no, so we do have
:01:40. > :01:42.returning characters, including the aliens, who are bigger than before.
:01:43. > :01:50.Age at a make several times. Let's have a look. --A joke they make.
:01:51. > :02:44.EPIC MUSIC. Oh! Oh my god. What goes up, must come down. Don't worry.
:02:45. > :02:52.Controlled dive. EPIC MUSIC. Oh! Watch out for the landmarks.
:02:53. > :02:58.Straight through Tower Bridge. They love the landmarks. Jeff Goldblum is
:02:59. > :03:04.the best thing in the film and I wanted him to be in it more. Because
:03:05. > :03:11.it has so many storylines there is not enough Jeff Goldblum. The other
:03:12. > :03:17.problem is you get the feeling you have seen all of this before. And
:03:18. > :03:22.not just in Independence Day. The destruction of landmarks is in so
:03:23. > :03:27.many movies. You get it in Star Wars. A theme about people having a
:03:28. > :03:34.communal memory or hallucination that those a lot to Close
:03:35. > :03:40.Encounters. And I was thinking of Godzilla as well. -- owes a lot to.
:03:41. > :03:44.When you are thinking of how many films it reminds you of, that is bad
:03:45. > :03:49.news. The script is all over the place and makes no sense. The
:03:50. > :03:57.previous one had some logic and this doesn't. But it isn't without some
:03:58. > :04:01.popcorn spectacle theme. There is one moment when they say the aliens
:04:02. > :04:06.will land and it will go in the ocean. And someone said, which part
:04:07. > :04:13.of it, all of it! At it felt perfunctory. -- but. No one was
:04:14. > :04:17.screaming out for it. If you love the original as much as I do,
:04:18. > :04:28.nothing will make you think they are two equal parts. This isn't
:04:29. > :04:35.Godfather II. It is the absolute definition of hmm, all right, not
:04:36. > :04:44.great. A classic sequel. OK. Raman Raghav 2.0. This is a noir Turella
:04:45. > :04:49.from a respected director in Mumbai. -- thriller. It is inspired from a
:04:50. > :04:56.serial killer in the 1960s. But it is not about that killer, it is
:04:57. > :05:04.about another, and a drug snorting corrupt pop. This is a familiar
:05:05. > :05:09.idea. -- cop. Two sides of the same coin. We have seen it many times.
:05:10. > :05:21.Especially in Martin Scorsese's films. What we have is a terrific
:05:22. > :05:26.performance by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the killer. It seems to be all
:05:27. > :05:36.style, but one of the most impressive things about it if it is
:05:37. > :05:39.quiet gruelling and tough, but most of the violence happens offscreen.
:05:40. > :05:46.It is interesting that things happening away from the camera can
:05:47. > :05:49.be more interesting than what isn't. And we had Frost Nixon, this is
:05:50. > :05:57.Elvis Nixon. Slightly different. This is based on the true story. But
:05:58. > :06:05.I think that is always the giveaway. They made up a bunch of stuff.
:06:06. > :06:09.Elvis, for reasons that are compensated, got on a plane and went
:06:10. > :06:12.to DC where he turns up at the White House saying, I want to meet the
:06:13. > :06:18.president, it is a matter of national importance. Richard Nixon
:06:19. > :06:24.was the president and didn't know what to do about it but his aide
:06:25. > :06:27.said you should meet him, he is important. And there was a meeting
:06:28. > :06:31.which was initially meant to be secret but later on the photograph
:06:32. > :06:44.of them shaking hands became iconic. There was no taping at that point.
:06:45. > :06:47.This is pre-Watergate. Anyway, the story is, they thought, let's have
:06:48. > :06:52.fun with it. Put them in The Oval Office. Michael Shannon and Kevin
:06:53. > :07:02.Spacey enjoying themselves. Here is a clip. One of the girls outside
:07:03. > :07:13.reminds me of someone. How many square feet is Graceland? 10,000? A
:07:14. > :07:19.fine size for a home. Of course, the White House here is 55,000 feet
:07:20. > :07:23.something like that. I made a few additions. It might be more than
:07:24. > :07:34.that. I don't think it is the size of a man's home that defines him.
:07:35. > :07:43.Mnm's are my favourite. Mine as well. So, how can I help you? The
:07:44. > :07:56.answer is, he wants to become a thread all agent at large. He wants
:07:57. > :08:02.to collect a Federal badge. Collected in. -- Federal agent. It
:08:03. > :08:08.gets a lot right. But Michael Shannon doesn't have the vocal heft
:08:09. > :08:14.for elders of that period but he does have the hand gestures. I am
:08:15. > :08:19.and Elvis fan and I like his performance. When you consider how
:08:20. > :08:25.bizarre the real-life meeting was, it is odd that they thought they
:08:26. > :08:28.needed to embellish and have a karate demonstration. Eldest did
:08:29. > :08:35.those but it is weird to insert it. For myself, I think it would be
:08:36. > :08:41.better if it was closer but they decided to do it broadly
:08:42. > :08:46.comedically. There are a few touches that showed genuine affection
:08:47. > :08:51.towards Elvis, at least. All the time I was watching it, I thought,
:08:52. > :08:54.it was fine, but there is a much were the story behind this which is
:08:55. > :09:00.just the straight, down the line meeting between the two. For me, the
:09:01. > :09:04.weird thing was the fact that Richard Nixon was three times during
:09:05. > :09:10.the meeting recorded as having said it was important he retained his
:09:11. > :09:13.credibility. He was almost prophetically obsessed with
:09:14. > :09:22.retaining his credibility. And Elvis said he had laid Vegas and said it
:09:23. > :09:36.was a tough gig. -- played. And Nixon said he did. He knew. But they
:09:37. > :09:56.played off each other well. It is fanciful fluff. What is the best
:09:57. > :09:58.film out? Tale of Tales. A film with sea beasts and dragons and Toby
:09:59. > :10:03.Jones becoming obsessed by a giant flea. An adult fairytale. I thought
:10:04. > :10:08.it was good fun. I have now seen this film three times since it
:10:09. > :10:15.opened and it just gets better. Have you got plans to see it again? No,
:10:16. > :10:24.that is enough. And I love that I am Belfast. A wonderful filmmaker. A
:10:25. > :10:29.film about a woman who claims to be Belfast, the embodiment of the city.
:10:30. > :10:35.She takes us on a tour of its history and its location is. It is
:10:36. > :10:41.lovely. This is not so much like a documentary as a pull and, a visual
:10:42. > :10:46.bomb about the place he grew up. -- poem. It has a magical eye for what
:10:47. > :10:51.appears to be completely insignificant and irrelevant detail
:10:52. > :10:56.but he will find something truly interesting about it. No one else
:10:57. > :11:01.makes movies like it. I think it is a fine piece of work. It is out on
:11:02. > :11:09.DVD now. Not enough people saw it in the cinema. It sounds lovely. Check
:11:10. > :11:19.it out. Many thanks, as ever. And a quick reminder, you will find more
:11:20. > :11:26.film reviews on our website. That is it for me is weak. Thank you so much
:11:27. > :11:33.for watching. Goodbye. -- for me this week.
:11:34. > :11:35.It's a slightly fresher feel to the weather this weekend,
:11:36. > :11:39.as the high humidity moves away, which fuelled the thunderstorms over
