0:00:00 > 0:00:07FA Cup Sportsday, but now it is time for The Film Review.
0:00:18 > 0:00:20Hello, and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News.
0:00:20 > 0:00:23To take us through this week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode.
0:00:23 > 0:00:29So Mark, what do we have this week?
0:00:29 > 0:00:36So we have Kenneth Branagh's take on Murder on the Orient Expression.
0:00:36 > 0:00:39Killing a sacred deer from Yorgos Lanthimos.
0:00:39 > 0:00:46And the bad mums are back in bad mums Christmas. It is that time of
0:00:46 > 0:00:52year.It is.Let's start with Murder on the Orient Expression. Had just a
0:00:52 > 0:00:55bit of publicity, people probably know it is out.You would be
0:00:55 > 0:01:01hard-pressed to avoid it. It has been on the big screen and small
0:01:01 > 0:01:08screen before, there was an early 70s version, ings so this is the new
0:01:08 > 0:01:13version directed by Kenneth Branagh who stars at Hercule Poirot with the
0:01:13 > 0:01:16most unbelievable twin layers moustache. The moustache should get
0:01:16 > 0:01:21a billing of its own. He is travelling from Istanbul to call
0:01:21 > 0:01:25lay, on the train. He has to get somewhere but once he gets on,
0:01:25 > 0:01:30something is going to happen, there is a virtual Cluedo board of famous
0:01:30 > 0:01:38people. So we have Derek jack by, Will Liberal Democrat Defoe, Dame
0:01:38 > 0:01:42Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer and Johnny Depp as a gangster. Something
0:01:42 > 0:01:51is going to happen. Here is a clip.
0:02:00 > 0:02:09Well, hello.Eye linger any longer I'll have to charge rent.I'll pay.
0:02:09 > 0:02:17Have another drink. Are you insulted?Disappointed.
0:02:17 > 0:02:22So men have a good look. All they have to do is keep their mouth shut
0:02:22 > 0:02:36and they can take home any prize they want. Still the mouth opens.
0:02:36 > 0:02:40Hmmm. I don't know why I am laughing. I
0:02:40 > 0:02:45don't think I am meant to.You are. There is lot of scenery chewing.
0:02:45 > 0:02:50There are scenes of Hercule Poirot, eating chocolate cake, enjoying it
0:02:50 > 0:02:53and so have the cast. They are sinking their teeth into the
0:02:53 > 0:02:58scenery. A murder is committed. Everyone is a suspect. Everyone has
0:02:58 > 0:03:00secrets and everyone has to be interrogated. What I like about
0:03:00 > 0:03:06this, and I did like it, is firstly it is old fashioned entertainment. I
0:03:06 > 0:03:10remember seeing the 74 version and with this, I knew the story, I know
0:03:10 > 0:03:14some people won't, if you don't you are in for a treat because it is a
0:03:14 > 0:03:18real Swiss watch kind of constructed mechanism. But the whole thing takes
0:03:18 > 0:03:25place on the train, and it is shot in 65mm. The camera sashays up and
0:03:25 > 0:03:29down the train, outside and inside. You get this wonderful overhead
0:03:29 > 0:03:35shot, there is a sequence in which we discover the victim's body. It is
0:03:35 > 0:03:39like they have gone to, every possible end to make the most
0:03:39 > 0:03:45visually of this confined space. Some of the exterior shots look like
0:03:45 > 0:03:51The Polar Express. What What I liked about it was the cast, they all get
0:03:51 > 0:03:56what kind of movie they are in. They are playing ripe character, it is
0:03:56 > 0:04:00thumbnail sketches. Branagh is enjoying himself enormously. He
0:04:00 > 0:04:04likes the character of Hercule Poirot. Hercule Poirot is a
0:04:04 > 0:04:08perfectionist, he is a bit obsessive, he keeps trying to
0:04:08 > 0:04:13straighten people's ties, he says I see the world as it should be and I
0:04:13 > 0:04:18can't relax if something is out of kilter. You have to go into this
0:04:18 > 0:04:22thinking it is an Agatha Christie, there is...Does it need to be
0:04:22 > 0:04:28remade? It looks beautiful but I don't know... Does that matter?I
0:04:28 > 0:04:32thought it was big screen entertainment, like a variety show,
0:04:32 > 0:04:37the train becomes a stage, we have famous stars come on, do their bit,
0:04:37 > 0:04:42I really enjoyed it. I went in feeling trepidatious, smiled all the
0:04:42 > 0:04:46way through and despite the fact I know the plot, I thought its
0:04:46 > 0:04:49revelations were handled well. I know some critics have been sniffy
0:04:49 > 0:04:55about it. It's a solid piece of old fashioned entertain. It looked good.
0:04:55 > 0:05:00It looks really good, that is not a little thing.OK. OK. The Killing of
0:05:00 > 0:05:05a Sacred Deer. I mean, I have seen the trailer so many times and I am
0:05:05 > 0:05:12terrified by that. That really look good but terrifying.Yorgos
0:05:12 > 0:05:17Lanthimos, he has worked in black comedy before, this is something
0:05:17 > 0:05:22more disturb, Colin Farrell is a heart surgeon, he has a perfect
0:05:22 > 0:05:28life. He has a glamorous house and two lovely children. He has a
0:05:28 > 0:05:33strange relationship with a teenager called Martin who turns up at work.
0:05:33 > 0:05:38At first he seems to be innocent but then he starts to look like a young
0:05:38 > 0:05:45Norman Bates. There is a hint of We Need To Talk About Kevin the story
0:05:45 > 0:05:51is becoming a weirdly surreal revenge drama. You start laughing
0:05:51 > 0:05:57awe you would, then it starts moving into the territory of The Shining
0:05:57 > 0:06:02there are cameras creeping through corridor, we look to some extent
0:06:02 > 0:06:07towards a film like Funny Games which is painful to watch. The thing
0:06:07 > 0:06:10I like about it and Yorgos Lanthimos would like, I spent the film not
0:06:10 > 0:06:15knowing where it was going. Yes, it is a horror movie on one level, on
0:06:15 > 0:06:21one level it is Saw for the up market, art house crowd. On another
0:06:21 > 0:06:24level it's a strange distance black comedy. You never quite relax into
0:06:24 > 0:06:30it. I felt very uneasy and I have thought a lot about it since I saw
0:06:30 > 0:06:37it.Is there going to be a recommendation for Bad mums
0:06:37 > 0:06:41ChristmasThree women decide to rebel against the tyranny of being a
0:06:41 > 0:06:45super mum with the help of swearing and alcohol. Along comes Christmas,
0:06:45 > 0:06:49this time they rebel against the tyranny of the most stressful time
0:06:49 > 0:06:57of the year. Here is a clip. ManufactureI am like a giant stress
0:06:57 > 0:07:03ball from November to New Year, I just want to enjoy Christmas again.
0:07:03 > 0:07:12Yeah.Let's do it.What?Guy, what is wrong with us? Have we learned
0:07:12 > 0:07:16nothing? We are mothers. If things are not going our way, what do we
0:07:16 > 0:07:23do?We hide in the bathroom? No, we don't do that. No, we stand up, and
0:07:23 > 0:07:29we fight back.Yes.So if we want to do Christmas our way this year, then
0:07:29 > 0:07:35weir going to do Christmas our way. I laughed during that clip. Clip.
0:07:35 > 0:07:39When I saw the first one, I went along, low expectations and I
0:07:39 > 0:07:43enjoyed it. In the case of this same thing, I went along thinking I
0:07:43 > 0:07:46enjoyed the first one and it was nothing like as funny, it is not
0:07:46 > 0:07:50because this time the bad mums are having to deal with their own bad
0:07:50 > 0:07:55mums so it is like three separate story, that said I counted how many
0:07:55 > 0:07:59times I laughed and I laughed seven times. I have a six laugh rule. If
0:07:59 > 0:08:03you laugh six times it is officially a comedy, and yes it is all over the
0:08:03 > 0:08:07players it doesn't make sense, it doesn't have anything like the
0:08:07 > 0:08:11simplicity of the first one, but I kind of laughed. I liked the
0:08:11 > 0:08:16character, it is very very much a retread of the only thing, once
0:08:16 > 0:08:19again the solution involves alcohol and swearing but I would be lying if
0:08:19 > 0:08:27I said I didn't laugh.That is Christmas!So very, the remake of
0:08:27 > 0:08:31Wages of Fear it did really badly 40 years ago and nobody got to see it.
0:08:31 > 0:08:38Now it is back and it is one of the most brutal gruelling visceral
0:08:38 > 0:08:42American action movies of the 70s. It is a extraordinary piece of
0:08:42 > 0:08:46working you need to see it on the big screen. It is coming out on
0:08:46 > 0:08:52Blu-ray on Monday. If you get a chance to see this film projected.
0:08:52 > 0:08:57Score by tan yes Rien Dream it is a brilliant cinema experience.I was
0:08:57 > 0:09:03about to say I am going to borrow your Blu-ray you you are saying
0:09:03 > 0:09:08watch it on the big screen. You need to see it on a big screen, this is a
0:09:08 > 0:09:12film they worked out, two-years in the making, and, then it came out
0:09:12 > 0:09:20and it came out the same time as Star Wars, they didn't want a
0:09:20 > 0:09:24gruelling visceral thriller, that, you know, a story that starts at a
0:09:24 > 0:09:28point of no hope and goes down hill from there.OK. DVD for anyone who
0:09:28 > 0:09:36wants to stay inIt Comes At Night it is a chill her. It is a story in
0:09:36 > 0:09:41a near future in which a virus has attacked mankind. Our family are
0:09:41 > 0:09:45hiding in a cab none the woods. It comes at night, but actually the
0:09:45 > 0:09:49danger is from within. It is about people turning on each other,
0:09:49 > 0:09:53distrusting each other, paranoia, it has a lot to say about the modern
0:09:53 > 0:09:58political landscape and it is not a film that relies on gory shock, it
0:09:58 > 0:10:03has an atmosphere of creeping dread. I have brought a DVD for you, you
0:10:03 > 0:10:10are going to like horror films in the very near future. You have said
0:10:10 > 0:10:17woods, cabins and paranoia, you do that deliberately. In a subtle way.
0:10:17 > 0:10:21That Stle paranoia I love. Thank you. It is my early Christmas
0:10:21 > 0:10:26present. It is a delight. Thank you. Try harder next week.
