0:00:00 > 0:00:03story of British cyclist Vicky Barnes on the comeback trail after a

0:00:03 > 0:00:06life-threatening crash. That is all on Sportsday at 6:30pm but now it is

0:00:06 > 0:00:09time for the Film Review.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23Hello and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26To take us through this week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode.

0:00:26 > 0:00:31So Mark, what do we have this week?

0:00:31 > 0:00:36A very interesting week. We have Paddington 2 which you cannot have

0:00:36 > 0:00:42missed the adverts for. We have the Florida project, a new film by Sean

0:00:42 > 0:00:47Baker. And Professor Marston and the wonder women -- Professor Marston

0:00:47 > 0:00:54And The Wonder Women.Soap Paddington 2, what a great British

0:00:54 > 0:00:59cast.The first Paddington was really lovely and charming. It

0:00:59 > 0:01:03really surprised everybody. I went into Paddington 2 thinking it cannot

0:01:03 > 0:01:09live up to it. It does. The story is Paddington wants to buy a present

0:01:09 > 0:01:13for his aunt Lucy's birthday. There is a pop-up book of London but it is

0:01:13 > 0:01:18really expensive and he cannot afford it. The book business in and

0:01:18 > 0:01:23the finger or poor of suspicion points at Paddington. Next thing is

0:01:23 > 0:01:28he is wrongly behind bars. Here is a clip.

0:01:28 > 0:01:33In the past month these three shadowy individuals have all been

0:01:33 > 0:01:38seen snooping around London landmarks. Green map the >>

0:01:43 > 0:01:48de do you think they are using the pop-up book?Maybe I should have a

0:01:48 > 0:02:01look.This is my friend Knuckle. The professor, squeaky Pete, mad jog the

0:02:01 > 0:02:08memory dog, Jeffrey Wilcox and Charlie Rumble. It is so wonderful

0:02:08 > 0:02:14to meet you all. It is a relief that Paddington has made such sweet

0:02:14 > 0:02:21friends.Would you excuse us for a moment. What are you doing?Talking

0:02:21 > 0:02:27to the nice men.We cannot trust these men. Look at them, talk about

0:02:27 > 0:02:35a rogues gallery, hideous. As for that bearded baboon, he has not got

0:02:35 > 0:02:40two brain cells to rub together. We can still hear you, Mr Brown. That

0:02:40 > 0:02:49was the light you turned off. The microphone has the sign microphone

0:02:49 > 0:02:54next to it. You laughed four times in that clip!

0:02:54 > 0:02:59Before we went on a you said is it just a family film to sort of

0:02:59 > 0:03:05implied that... The thing is making a family film is real hard. It made

0:03:05 > 0:03:12me laugh and I am 54. It will make kids laugh. Ben Whishaw's voice is

0:03:12 > 0:03:17perfect. There is a mixture of childish and old beyond the years.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21There are lots of slapstick sequences. Paddington is trying to

0:03:21 > 0:03:27raise money for the book. There is a scene in the barbers were it all

0:03:27 > 0:03:31goes hideously wrong. Their action sequences where Paddington is in

0:03:31 > 0:03:36peril. You don't notice the interaction between the CGI and the

0:03:36 > 0:03:39physical world. It was not until the end of the film where I thought they

0:03:39 > 0:03:44blended it really well. I think making a really good family film is

0:03:44 > 0:03:48Rulli hard and I thought this was really charming. The fact it was the

0:03:48 > 0:03:52second one I expected the law of diminishing returns to kick him, it

0:03:52 > 0:03:56didn't. The bit where you see the different characters coming in... I

0:03:56 > 0:04:01think it is really, really funny. I think you would really like it.I

0:04:01 > 0:04:05suppose what I meant was it is a film you would take the kids to but

0:04:05 > 0:04:10if you are not taking the kids?Go on your own. After the first film so

0:04:10 > 0:04:16many people said I don't have kids but I want to see Paddington, is it

0:04:16 > 0:04:21fine? Yes, believe me, the cinema will be full. It is for all ages and

0:04:21 > 0:04:25I think anyone with a heart and soul can enjoy it.

0:04:25 > 0:04:30Looking forward to it. The Florida project, rather different. Tipped

0:04:30 > 0:04:35for Oscars?I love this. The name comes from the name that Walt Disney

0:04:35 > 0:04:39developed his community of tomorrow in Florida which then became what

0:04:39 > 0:04:45Disney World. It is a community of people living in more rundown motels

0:04:45 > 0:04:48beyond the boundary of the theme park. It is essentially people

0:04:48 > 0:04:53living on the poverty line. All the purple paint in the world cannot

0:04:53 > 0:04:58hide the fact they are living in the red. The central character is moony

0:04:58 > 0:05:04he runs riot while her mother has a struggles to make ends meet. The

0:05:04 > 0:05:11manager is played by Willem Dafoe. This film portrays a harsh world of

0:05:11 > 0:05:16economic reality is that you see it from the kids eyes. It was shot on a

0:05:16 > 0:05:21combination of digital and 35 mil. It looks beautiful because you see

0:05:21 > 0:05:26the wonder that the kids see. You see the strange buildings, the

0:05:26 > 0:05:32orange Orange world, the strange wizard of souvenir shop. Also the

0:05:32 > 0:05:36weird grass and trees and cows which you don't expect right next to the

0:05:36 > 0:05:42concrete jungle. You get right into the lives of these people. It is the

0:05:42 > 0:05:45idea that the kids are living in poverty in hard circumstances but

0:05:45 > 0:05:49you are seeing the world through their eyes. There is hardship. There

0:05:49 > 0:05:54are real tears in this but as a portrayal of an innocent view of the

0:05:54 > 0:06:00world, it is also very streetwise and sassy, it is terrific. He never

0:06:00 > 0:06:05feels like a tourist in this environment. I thought it was

0:06:05 > 0:06:14touching and moving. It will make you laugh. Starts with Celebration

0:06:14 > 0:06:22by Kool and the gang. This is a team unity of today and it has its feet

0:06:22 > 0:06:25in the ground but its head in the air.

0:06:25 > 0:06:31Film three is really intriguing, Professor Marston And The Wonder

0:06:31 > 0:06:36Women. It is all about the creator of the comic book character Wonder

0:06:36 > 0:06:40Woman.Now writer and director Angela Robbins goes back to the

0:06:40 > 0:06:44creation of the character. We have the Professor of the title played by

0:06:44 > 0:06:49Luke Evans. We have his smarter, sharper wife brilliantly played by

0:06:49 > 0:06:56Rebecca Hall and Belle Heathcote's all of Berne. They invent the lie

0:06:56 > 0:07:01detector, they start a nonconformist family unit and they come up with

0:07:01 > 0:07:05the strange, book character who will go on to make millions. Here is a

0:07:05 > 0:07:13look -- Olive Byrne. This is perfect. I will inject my

0:07:13 > 0:07:18ideas right into the thumping heart of America. I will get a real artist

0:07:18 > 0:07:23to draw it properly. She is an Amazon princess who lives on an

0:07:23 > 0:07:32island of all women.Paradise Island.And a man crashes onto the

0:07:32 > 0:07:41island.And she wears a burlesque outfit.It is athletic.And she

0:07:41 > 0:07:46wears a silver bracelet.It deflect bullets.We love you so much but

0:07:46 > 0:07:51nobody, and I say this with all the compassionate truth in my heart,

0:07:51 > 0:07:56nobody will ever publish this. The story flips backwards and

0:07:56 > 0:08:02forwards. It starts with the investigation of the comic strip and

0:08:02 > 0:08:06they saved is all full of spanking and perversion and bondage, explain

0:08:06 > 0:08:11yourself. The rest of the film looks back at where this character came

0:08:11 > 0:08:16from, about the alternative family unit, about the way these people

0:08:16 > 0:08:21become involved in role-playing and S&M. He is a psychologist who thinks

0:08:21 > 0:08:26everything comes down to dominance, submission and compliance. The women

0:08:26 > 0:08:33take him with a pinch of salt. But it becomes a portrait of tolerance

0:08:33 > 0:08:37in intolerant times. At one point Rebecca Hall says we cannot be in

0:08:37 > 0:08:41love because the world would let us. He says we have to be what we want

0:08:41 > 0:08:46to be. It is a film about alternative lifestyles. It is a film

0:08:46 > 0:08:50about tolerance, it is funny and charming. I did not know any of this

0:08:50 > 0:08:53stuff at all. It makes a very interesting double bill with Wonder

0:08:53 > 0:08:58Woman who has become such a huge box office success. I thought it was

0:08:58 > 0:09:10really good and I really enjoyed it. It has

0:09:11 > 0:09:14been a really good week, you can tell.It is, you love everything.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17Best out at the moment?Killing of the sacred dear. It starts out as a

0:09:17 > 0:09:21comedy and then turns really sinister. -- Killing Of A Sacred

0:09:21 > 0:09:28Deer. It starts being strange and off-kilter and then it moves into

0:09:28 > 0:09:33horror film territory. I have to say, it is not for everyone. It is a

0:09:33 > 0:09:38Marmite film. I really liked it. I felt really uncomfortable all the

0:09:38 > 0:09:43way through. I could not quite the measure of it. And like Mother, I

0:09:43 > 0:09:49thought it was really well done. It has haunted me and stayed with me.

0:09:49 > 0:09:57OK! I do think you have convinced anyone with that! Best DVD?

0:09:57 > 0:10:04Sorcerer. 40 years ago this film tanked. This is a remake of Wages of

0:10:04 > 0:10:08Kay fear. It came back to cinemas and is still playing in some

0:10:08 > 0:10:14cinemas. It is gruelling, muscular, visceral, really tense. It is a

0:10:14 > 0:10:19story about trucks filled with very volatile nitroglycerin being driven

0:10:19 > 0:10:25across treacherous terrain. It has a celebrated rope bridge sequence. It

0:10:25 > 0:10:31has a score by Tangerine Dream. 40 years ago it opened head-to-head

0:10:31 > 0:10:35with Star Wars and Star Wars one. People wanted to see light sabres

0:10:35 > 0:10:47and rocket ships and all that stuff. This was a really tough movie. 40

0:10:47 > 0:10:50years later it is recognised as the masterpiece it always was. It is a

0:10:50 > 0:10:52work of art. I guarantee you you will be gripped from beginning to

0:10:52 > 0:11:01end.You had me at a score by Tangerine Dream! Mark, thank you

0:11:01 > 0:11:03very much.
