:00:00. > :00:00.him. We will also be live from the Six Nations. We are in sports day.
:00:00. > :00:18.Now it is time for The Film Review. Hello and welcome to
:00:19. > :00:24.The Film Review on BBC News. To take us through this week's
:00:25. > :00:26.cinema releases is Jason Solomon. So Jason, what do
:00:27. > :00:36.we have this week? This week we sift the debris of the
:00:37. > :00:40.Boston Marathon in the company of Kevin Bake owned mark hark mark in
:00:41. > :00:49.Patriots Day. We take a long, sad look at the life of footballer and
:00:50. > :00:55.alcoholic, George Best. And putting you off fluffy robes for life, we
:00:56. > :00:59.seek A Cure For Wellness in a Swiss Alpine spa.
:01:00. > :01:04.So, let's start with Patriots Day. It is the story of the 2013 Boston
:01:05. > :01:10.Marathon bombing and the manhunt afterwards? Yes, the aftermath. It
:01:11. > :01:14.gripped the world. There was this extraordinary bombing of the Boston
:01:15. > :01:22.Marathon which takes place on Patriots Day. It is a well known
:01:23. > :01:29.national event. It was bombed by two random brothers. The names were on
:01:30. > :01:34.everyone's lips in 2013. Everyone remember, the brothers that escaped.
:01:35. > :01:39.They had to shut the city down looking for the brothers, one was
:01:40. > :01:44.holed up in a boat in someone else's backyard. The strangely human story
:01:45. > :01:48.of this wanton destruction that they wrought.
:01:49. > :01:54.The film is put together in a classic disaster film fashion, the
:01:55. > :02:00.people assembling for the big day of the Boston Marathon, and including
:02:01. > :02:04.Marc hark as a cop. Then there is the Kevin Bacon, the FBI man, and
:02:05. > :02:09.John Goodman with his strange eyebrows. This is them having a look
:02:10. > :02:12.after the explosion. You are not any closer to
:02:13. > :02:18.identifying the guys that we are really looking for. We have to
:02:19. > :02:22.release the pictures. If we release the pictures know it
:02:23. > :02:28.is out of our control. Gentlemen, if I may, right now,
:02:29. > :02:32.Boston is working against us. Right now, in this city, when it comes to
:02:33. > :02:36.terrorism, everyone wants to talk. There are a lot of people talking
:02:37. > :02:41.but talking about the wrong people. Release the pictures of our guys,
:02:42. > :02:48.sit back and listen. Trust me. Start letting bust on work for us, I'm
:02:49. > :02:53.telling you. I understand, Boston. But I can't snap my fingers on this,
:02:54. > :02:58.the decision goes up to the Attorney General.
:02:59. > :03:02.This is my sfi, Rick, release the God dam pictures.
:03:03. > :03:07.It was a terrible tragedy. Recent. It is difficult to make a Hollywood
:03:08. > :03:13.film about such a tragedy so recently? And the director has been
:03:14. > :03:17.faithful as much as he can and to those affected by the tragedy and
:03:18. > :03:21.injured, the people with the amputees. The people at the end of
:03:22. > :03:25.the film discussing how they put their lives back together it is a
:03:26. > :03:31.healing process for the town of Boston. There is Mark Wahlberg, a
:03:32. > :03:37.poster boy for Boston. It's a strange film. It is all about
:03:38. > :03:41.Boston. What it does not do is examine the motives of the brothers
:03:42. > :03:47.who out of nowhere caused this carnage. While it does feature them,
:03:48. > :03:54.they go in their homes and feature their wives but it does not probe
:03:55. > :03:58.the motives. That is the fear. How can the renegade terrorists provoke
:03:59. > :04:03.such a carnage and bring the city to its mes? That is more interesting
:04:04. > :04:06.for me. So it was a bit hurrah, this film for me.
:04:07. > :04:11.The clip that we saw it looked like a thriller. Does it have that
:04:12. > :04:17.element? That tension of a thriller? I call it a proceedural it is very
:04:18. > :04:20.much of the safety of the American citizens, protected by the great
:04:21. > :04:25.policemen and the Ambulance Service, they will track down the killers,
:04:26. > :04:32.the media helping. Although they look hapless as the brothers led
:04:33. > :04:39.them a merry dance for 89 hours and ended up hiding in someone's boat.
:04:40. > :04:45.It is slightly ridiculous, without the humour and the absurdity as to
:04:46. > :04:52.what terrorism can do. It is dangerous, it is called Patriots
:04:53. > :04:56.Day, so it's very American and up-thumping but it loses something
:04:57. > :05:00.because of that because it is about people who wanted to be
:05:01. > :05:03.anti-American. I wanted them to explore that more darkly than it
:05:04. > :05:08.does. Let's move on to George Best. A
:05:09. > :05:14.great footballer. Beautiful to watch him play, then in his later life, so
:05:15. > :05:19.sad, really, he became an alcoholic. Is this a good film? This is a
:05:20. > :05:27.doomary. We have seen many films of him. The popping of the champagne,
:05:28. > :05:32.the dazzling eyes. He was the first boutique footballer. But footballers
:05:33. > :05:39.have changed. Football has changed. It does not look like this anymore.
:05:40. > :05:47.But he was whippy, incandescent, he had it all by 22 but washed up and
:05:48. > :05:52.retired by 27. It is put together like a Shakespearean tragedy.
:05:53. > :05:57.Sitting on the size lines, despairing and sad. The only person
:05:58. > :06:05.who is not sad is George Best. He seems happy with his lot.
:06:06. > :06:12.There is a shot where someone runs in, saying Besty, Besty, where did
:06:13. > :06:16.it go wrong but he is lying on bed with a beautiful woman, surrounded
:06:17. > :06:20.by lots of money. He didn't want people's help. He didn't want
:06:21. > :06:25.people's love. That is why it is sad to watch. As an audience member you
:06:26. > :06:29.want to reach out to this man and love him. He doesn't want it, he
:06:30. > :06:35.rejects it, preferring to disappear into the booze. I think that is what
:06:36. > :06:41.is sad. It is well put together. It is a little dour, in that it lacks
:06:42. > :06:47.the light of George Best's feet. All right. Now, A Cure For Wellness.
:06:48. > :06:56.This is about a young executive, who is sent to retrieve his company's
:06:57. > :07:07.CEO from the Swiss Alps fromst a spa? Yes, this arrogant young man
:07:08. > :07:13.goes to a spa and there are people wearing white suits. I am very wary
:07:14. > :07:21.of people in these suits, with clip boards and clipped accents. Let's
:07:22. > :07:27.look at this along the corridors of uncertainty with Jason Isaacs. Hi!
:07:28. > :07:33.What are you doing here? Sorry, I don't understand. What are you doing
:07:34. > :07:37.here? Take it easy. It's OK.
:07:38. > :07:42.Mr Lockhart, every time I turn around you are somewhere you are not
:07:43. > :07:48.supposed to be. I guess I'm lost. Time trying to
:07:49. > :07:53.find my way back to my room. This is a restricted floor. There are signs
:07:54. > :07:57.everywhere, surely you did not come down here by accident. What exactly
:07:58. > :08:01.are you looking for? I had a problem with my tooth.
:08:02. > :08:06.Your tooth? Actually it is feeling much better. If you can point me in
:08:07. > :08:11.the direction of my room. Nonsense, we can't let you get an
:08:12. > :08:19.infection. You must let us talk care of you. After all, that's why you're
:08:20. > :08:25.here... Menacing! Yes, if you don't like dentists, don't watch the next
:08:26. > :08:32.bit. Who does like the dentist? Well, ever since Marathon Man. There
:08:33. > :08:36.are lots of old contraptions in this spa, like the 1950s with the
:08:37. > :08:46.medicine ball, and the tanks with the eels it is like a Bond Villain
:08:47. > :08:50.hide away. Very pastiche. It is a recipe for disaster as to what was
:08:51. > :08:57.going on. A complete mess of a film. How long? 2.5 hours it is quite a
:08:58. > :09:04.lot. What is best out at the moment?
:09:05. > :09:11.Well, A Cure For Wellness but also Moonlight it is a beautiful, tender,
:09:12. > :09:16.poetic coming of age story told about the life of a black boy from
:09:17. > :09:21.Miami, from a little boy to a man. It is about his life and his tender
:09:22. > :09:27.growing sexuality. Realising who he is. It is about identity and
:09:28. > :09:33.identity politics. It is a new sort of cinema. It has eight Oscar
:09:34. > :09:41.nominations. That takes us nicely to the Oscars.
:09:42. > :09:46.Almost upon us? I loved Moonlight. The budget was 8.5. It has the
:09:47. > :09:51.chance of becoming the smallest film ever to win Best Picture. It is a
:09:52. > :09:58.bit like Leicester. It stands the chance of dislodging the favourite,
:09:59. > :10:03.La La Land. I am a favourite. I know that there is a backlash, people
:10:04. > :10:07.saying it is overhyped with the 14 nominations going to the Oscars
:10:08. > :10:16.ares, I don't think it will win all 14. But there could be a tidy haul
:10:17. > :10:20.for it. It is good for Hollywood. Rebooted for a new generation.
:10:21. > :10:25.People are going to it thinking that they will see Singing in the Rain.
:10:26. > :10:33.But it is a modern Indy film with singing and dancing.
:10:34. > :10:39.What about Best Actress, Best Actor? Well, I that I that the Best Actor
:10:40. > :10:45.will not go to Ryan Gosling but to Casey Affleck. There is also a
:10:46. > :10:52.threat from Denzel Washington in Fences. And Best Actress, I think
:10:53. > :11:04.will go to Emma Stone. That is sewn into her terrorist. I think that the
:11:05. > :11:13.Best Picture will go to La La Land. I think maybe Moonlight could do it
:11:14. > :11:20.but those directors could become the Best ever Director winners.
:11:21. > :11:24.And maybe a screenplay for Moonlight and One for Manchester by the Sea.
:11:25. > :11:26.Let's see how many of them you get right.
:11:27. > :11:32.I'm sure all of them. Don't forget you can
:11:33. > :11:50.catch up on our previous Well, we had sunshine today, not
:11:51. > :11:53.everybody but most of us got a bit of sunny rays coming through the
:11:54. > :11:57.clouds. It is a different story this weekend. It is going downhill! More
:11:58. > :11:58.cloud, the rain coming
