:00:00. > :00:00.Test match between England and Pakistan. That is on sports day at
:00:00. > :00:19.6:30 p.m.. Now on BBC News, it is time for The Film Review.
:00:20. > :00:23.Hello and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News.
:00:24. > :00:26.To take us through this week's cinema releases is Anna Smith.
:00:27. > :00:34.Suicide Squad, the film everyone on the internet is talking about the
:00:35. > :00:38.moment. DC comics adaptation, super villains trying to save the world.
:00:39. > :00:47.Margot Robbie stars with Will Smith and a host of other stars. Then we
:00:48. > :00:54.The Carer. Ryan Cox plays a man who befriends his care. And finally, not
:00:55. > :01:00.for love. It is a Franco-Belgian film. His digitally shrunk, the
:01:01. > :01:04.actor here, to appear forfeit five. We will get to that in a moment.
:01:05. > :01:08.Suicide Squad, lots of people want to see it. They do. There has been a
:01:09. > :01:13.lot of talk about the fact that a number of critics have hated this
:01:14. > :01:15.film and fans are up in arms. I am in the middle. I found it vaguely
:01:16. > :01:24.disappointing although it has some merits. The setup is this. The
:01:25. > :01:29.Government won't to face up to a new enemy and they go to these super
:01:30. > :01:35.villains who are in high security prisons. Will Smith plays Deadshot,
:01:36. > :01:38.who is one of them. There are laws with superpowers. They are all
:01:39. > :01:42.gathered together and given lots of weaponry and sent off into
:01:43. > :01:48.guaranteed danger. Let's look at the clip.
:01:49. > :01:53.The injection you got is an Alnwick explosive. It is as powerful as a
:01:54. > :02:01.hand grenade. You disobey me and you die. You try to escape, you die. If
:02:02. > :02:08.you otherwise irritate or vex me, guess what, you die. I am knowing to
:02:09. > :02:15.be quite vexing. I am just for warning you. Lady, shut up! This is
:02:16. > :02:19.the deal. You're going somewhere very bad to do something that will
:02:20. > :02:30.get you killed. Until that happens, you're my problem. Is that like a
:02:31. > :02:35.pet? Yes. Grab what you need for a fight. Wheels up in ten.
:02:36. > :02:41.That scene is the dirty dozen with superheroes. You have got it. We
:02:42. > :02:45.have quite a fund set up where we are introduced to each one with
:02:46. > :02:50.their own soundtrack. Unfortunately, this is the point after which it
:02:51. > :02:53.gets quite dull. It gets into long extended action sequences against
:02:54. > :02:56.enemies that seem a bit vague. There is the Enchantress conjuring up
:02:57. > :03:01.armies, played by Cara Delevingne. All a bit odd. What you saw is the
:03:02. > :03:05.best and worst part of this movie, Margot Robbie. She was quite funny
:03:06. > :03:08.in that scene. She's a great actress and very charming. She plays this
:03:09. > :03:19.character called Harley Quinn, a cycle Barbie type. -- cycle Barbie.
:03:20. > :03:23.But she is basically a victim of abuse. With the Joker, played by
:03:24. > :03:33.Jared Leto, she was his psychiatrist and becomes hypnotised and
:03:34. > :03:38.enthralled by him. One of the criticisms is that these bad people
:03:39. > :03:48.just aren't bad enough. They could, with a herbal It is like it was a
:03:49. > :03:54.movie made by committee and what about. To return to the dirty dozen,
:03:55. > :04:00.one of my ten great films, Delhi Savalas and others, they are pretty
:04:01. > :04:08.evil people. It works as a plot idea. -- Telly. It is setup like
:04:09. > :04:17.that and then it is a bit a let down. The Carer, Brian Cox. This is
:04:18. > :04:21.a gentle paste registrar. But it is a certificate 15 with some choice
:04:22. > :04:27.language. He is an ageing thespian who has a carer who is an aspiring
:04:28. > :04:31.actress. The two former Dutch born. The nice thing is that you often see
:04:32. > :04:36.these films with the grand mansion and romance. This is a platonic
:04:37. > :04:43.friendship and a man who is vile to his family, led by Emilia Fox, who
:04:44. > :04:51.is his daughter, but there is a rather sweet friendship developing.
:04:52. > :04:55.Brian Cox is wonderful. Brian Cox is brilliant. One of the best things to
:04:56. > :05:00.come out of Dundee ever. He is excellent. It really is his show.
:05:01. > :05:04.There are some clunky dialogue and obvious expedition in here. Some
:05:05. > :05:13.poor setups. But, you know, he is fantastic. The film is about growing
:05:14. > :05:22.old, which happens to us all. The sort of On Golden Pond, that type of
:05:23. > :05:27.thing, it sometimes gets to me, the sentimentality. It is on the
:05:28. > :05:35.sentimental side. You have to be in an indulgent mood. The first time I
:05:36. > :05:42.saw it... I can forgive Bangkok 's anything. He is terrific. Up For
:05:43. > :05:48.Love. This is almost a shot for shot remake of another film. The main
:05:49. > :05:53.actor plays a man who is four feet five and digitally shrunk. All sorts
:05:54. > :05:59.of techniques, like body doubles, have been used. It is quite
:06:00. > :06:03.distracting. The as a blind date with who is tall. The fault of each
:06:04. > :06:07.other but she is kind of uncertain about it, especially when she
:06:08. > :07:12.introduces him to her family. Let's look at the clip.
:07:13. > :07:22.Of course, the unspoken joke there is that size does matter, actually.
:07:23. > :07:27.It's a matters to her. Yes, and it is quite believe in that it does
:07:28. > :07:31.examine that. She says, I love you but I dreamt that my Prince Charming
:07:32. > :07:34.would look assembly. It transfers the lot of relationships. People
:07:35. > :07:38.thinking, should I be searching for what I imagine in my mind's I should
:07:39. > :07:42.I be compromising or should I not be so prejudiced? Being friendship can
:07:43. > :07:46.be quite un-PC about that. It seems to have more fun when it is not
:07:47. > :07:51.examining that issue, when it is actually having a bit of a laugh at
:07:52. > :07:55.his size in a very affectionate way. It is a very open and one film. The
:07:56. > :08:05.way that it is shot, he is five foot nine, playing forfeit five -- four
:08:06. > :08:10.feet five, is a distracting? He's not always in proportion. It is very
:08:11. > :08:14.difficult with visual effect to keep consistency because they are using a
:08:15. > :08:18.variety of things. Actually, I felt, why not, in the spirit of the film,
:08:19. > :08:25.cast someone who is actually four feet five? If they had a Hollywood
:08:26. > :08:36.remake, beaded English could be -- Peter Ebdon -- Peter Dinklage would
:08:37. > :08:42.be perfect. It is an interesting question. Anyway, The Commune. I
:08:43. > :08:49.love this film. The Danish director who did The Hunt, tremendous
:08:50. > :08:53.director. This is slightly lighter. It is about a commune in the 1970s,
:08:54. > :08:59.and he should not abated because he grew up in one in 70s. A teenage
:09:00. > :09:02.girl represents his character. It is not from her point of view, it is
:09:03. > :09:08.from the point of view of the adults. Some terrific adults, they
:09:09. > :09:13.are playing a couple who inherit this house and are a bit bored and
:09:14. > :09:17.think, let's just have a commune. She's a newsreader, interestingly.
:09:18. > :09:21.They decide to throw the doors open to friends and hippies. But it has
:09:22. > :09:24.its cost. It is a funny and light film in many ways but in terms of
:09:25. > :09:27.the depiction of her relationship with him, it gets quite dark and
:09:28. > :09:32.interesting as she struggles to live up to the ideals that she is trying
:09:33. > :09:37.to live by. This idea of free love. Can she actually do it? Commune with
:09:38. > :09:42.a newsreader... It is my idea of hell. That kind of setting is quite
:09:43. > :09:47.common in North Germany and Denmark in the 1970s. The period to which it
:09:48. > :09:51.relates. It is. It is treated as quite normal. It is an interesting
:09:52. > :09:54.insight into the time. We might think of it now as bed-hopping but
:09:55. > :10:00.actually it is more about communal living. And males sharing their
:10:01. > :10:05.lives together, sharing money. It is a very hippy ideal. The DVD is
:10:06. > :10:08.Mapplethorpe: Look At The Pictures. Mapplethorpe, who was incredibly
:10:09. > :10:12.controversial and eight US in the 70s and 80s because of the subject
:10:13. > :10:23.matter of his pictures. Very exposed. Very exposed pictures. --
:10:24. > :10:26.explicit. Lots of family and friends and former lovers, of which there
:10:27. > :10:30.are many, talk on camera about him. I like the fact that they are not
:10:31. > :10:34.the Reverend. Often you find people being too polite. Nobody is that
:10:35. > :10:40.polite about him. You get a real picture and it is a very ambitious,
:10:41. > :10:44.hedonistic man. Edi Delhi of aids at age 40 two. Extraordinary talent. It
:10:45. > :10:49.raises all question of what is per Lord Rooker, what is art, Brazil
:10:50. > :10:53.away at the heart of this? -- he died early of Aids at the age of 42.
