:00:00. > 3:59:59look forward to reigning champions Spain's tie against Turkey tonight.

:00:00. > :00:00.That's at 6:30pm tonight. Hello and welcome to

:00:00. > :00:21.The Film Review on BBC News. To take us through this week's

:00:22. > :00:38.cinema releases is Mark Kermode. We've got Tale Of Tales starring

:00:39. > :00:42.Salma Hayek among others, then we got The Conjuring two, the sequel to

:00:43. > :00:48.the hit horror film. This time, it takes place in Enfield in England.

:00:49. > :01:00.Then we got The Violators, a gritty, British flick. From Enfield to

:01:01. > :01:03.Birkenhead. Tale Of Tales is from Matteo Garrone. This is his first

:01:04. > :01:09.English-language film although it does star and international cast. It

:01:10. > :01:12.is based on 17th-century fairy tales which inspired the likes of Hans

:01:13. > :01:15.Christian Andersen so you might recognise some of the themes in it.

:01:16. > :01:23.There are three different stories told in tandem. Salma Hayek must

:01:24. > :01:27.heed the heart of a sea serpent to errant the heart of a child she

:01:28. > :01:32.claims, then he lusty king who was to bed every whim and in the

:01:33. > :01:41.obsessed with his pet the but also obsessed with his pet the but also

:01:42. > :01:47.marrying off his daughter. -- flea. Have you found something to please

:01:48. > :01:54.you? They are also beautiful. Why did you send me them? You want to

:01:55. > :02:02.look beautiful on your wedding day. So I am to be married? Of course.

:02:03. > :02:04.You were right, Violet. This time we found you a husband. I understand

:02:05. > :02:08.you are bored living with us at the you are bored living with us at the

:02:09. > :02:14.castle and this way you can venture forth and discover new places. It's

:02:15. > :02:22.what you want. Who will my husband be, father? Well, he will be braver

:02:23. > :02:30.than the most valiant knight and wiser than our own court doctor.

:02:31. > :02:38.Thank you. What is his name? Not even I know his name yet. How can

:02:39. > :02:41.that be? Do you not know him? As an avid reader, you know that the

:02:42. > :02:49.husband of a princess can only be discovered through the tournament.

:02:50. > :02:58.What if I don't love him? You will love him, Violet. You will. That's

:02:59. > :03:03.weird! You haven't seen anything yet! There's a lot of weirdness in

:03:04. > :03:07.this film. There is weird body horror which we can show you here,

:03:08. > :03:12.but Toby Jones brings a lot of levity and humour. He is such a

:03:13. > :03:16.great comic actor and it is a strange relationship he has with his

:03:17. > :03:20.daughter and she learns very much that happy endings aren't

:03:21. > :03:28.inevitable. This is not a fairy tale you want to take your children to.

:03:29. > :03:36.Toby Jones is great fun and Vincent Cassel is very amusing. This story

:03:37. > :03:42.was beautiful, Salma Hayek eats the heart of a sea serpent. It wasn't

:03:43. > :03:47.very gripping. This is a long film and a bit slow in parts. When it's

:03:48. > :03:51.good, it's great, but you have to be in it for the long haul. I'm

:03:52. > :03:58.surprised this is the director of Gomorrah which is about the Mafia, a

:03:59. > :04:12.gritty, realist film. You can smell the streets of Naples in that film.

:04:13. > :04:13.Completely different. I saw it in Cannes last year. It's mainly filmed

:04:14. > :04:17.in Italy and I think it is what in Italy and I think it is what

:04:18. > :04:21.going through for the top spots. It also reminds us that faded hills,

:04:22. > :04:25.Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm are not really think

:04:26. > :04:30.you want to share with children. Some of them are very scary.

:04:31. > :04:33.Particularly the last one, Shirley Henderson comes in as one of the old

:04:34. > :04:46.ladies that Vincent Cassel's King ladies that Vincent Cassel's King

:04:47. > :04:55.falls far. -- for. There is a horror to their desire to appear young. The

:04:56. > :04:59.Conjuring two. This was a big hit a couple of years ago in the states

:05:00. > :05:03.and I'm glad they brought the action over to the UK because it is an

:05:04. > :05:11.American series. They follow the same couple, Ed and Lorraine. These

:05:12. > :05:14.were real-life paranormal investigators and the idea is that

:05:15. > :05:18.they did actually come over to Enfield in 1977 to investigate the

:05:19. > :05:23.alleged hauntings which we've heard about recently, there was a

:05:24. > :05:32.television series about it. The young adult Janet claimed that she

:05:33. > :05:37.was possessed -- young girl. There was a photo of her levitating or

:05:38. > :05:41.jumping up and down on the bed. My problem with this is because it is

:05:42. > :05:46.based on a true story which was labelled a hoax and the address that

:05:47. > :05:51.in the film, it takes away from what could have been a very interesting,

:05:52. > :05:54.claustrophobic haunted house film where you get to suspend your

:05:55. > :06:08.disbelief. It's an interesting concept and you can see why The

:06:09. > :06:12.Conjuring it will. -- did well. Is it not too late, after the Omen?

:06:13. > :06:17.That is something retro about it but That is something retro about it but

:06:18. > :06:23.it has that feel to it. I like it because I'm not a fan of torture

:06:24. > :06:27.movies or social media horror movies and it has a nice, vintage appeal

:06:28. > :06:32.and it looks fantastic. There are jumps gears and a sense of

:06:33. > :06:38.claustrophobia but it jumps away from the action in Enfield too

:06:39. > :06:47.often. There is also a sub John of horror films like Babadook when

:06:48. > :06:54.you're never sure who is head the horror is taking part in. This feels

:06:55. > :07:02.more generic. The Violators, this is the first film she has directed.

:07:03. > :07:05.Lauren McQueen plays a 15-year-old girl who lives in a Birkenhead

:07:06. > :07:10.council estate. Because of her circumstances and her family being

:07:11. > :07:13.in prison, she has to bring up our brothers and she encounters and

:07:14. > :07:19.older girl who wants to be friendly with her. She invites her over and a

:07:20. > :07:26.bit of a mystery evolves as to what is going on with this girl. Let's

:07:27. > :07:35.have a look at the clip. What did they exclude you for? What makes you

:07:36. > :07:45.been something bad. One step away been something bad. One step away

:07:46. > :07:51.from an open prison. You're not exactly a convent girl, are you? I'm

:07:52. > :08:08.not being funny, but I've got somewhere I need to be. So what

:08:09. > :08:11.about you? I've got my A-levels in a few weeks. I'm studying English,

:08:12. > :08:21.Greek, chemistry and physics and politics. What can you do with that?

:08:22. > :08:27.Who knows? My dad is telling everyone I'm a dead cert for

:08:28. > :08:32.Cambridge. You can see it's about class. It's about these two girls

:08:33. > :08:37.from different worlds thrown together and it tells the story of

:08:38. > :08:43.the young girls' friendship with an older man, a local pawnbroker who is

:08:44. > :08:48.offering protection and help, but at what cost? These are stories play

:08:49. > :08:53.out and you're following her very closely. It's not a cheerful watch.

:08:54. > :08:57.There are issues of abuse, but I think it is well done. It is

:08:58. > :09:01.possibly over ambitious because it tries to go further still approach

:09:02. > :09:05.to hard at the end and I just like it when it's doing kitchen-sink

:09:06. > :09:12.realism. The writer and director, is this based on one of her novels? No,

:09:13. > :09:15.it's an original story but it has a lot in common with her novels about

:09:16. > :09:21.emerging sexuality and strong young women. It's a low-budget British

:09:22. > :09:27.film but it's great to see a new female director in Britain, looking

:09:28. > :09:34.at working-class young girls who are struggling with sexuality. Your Best

:09:35. > :09:38.of the week is the Nice Guys with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe.

:09:39. > :09:43.Something fun at the cinema if you want a laugh. I was impressed with

:09:44. > :09:51.the comedic abilities. It is a different 1977 than The Conjuring

:09:52. > :09:58.too-mac! This is the pornography scene in Los Angeles where a private

:09:59. > :10:00.investigator tries to solve the case. It's not about the case, it's

:10:01. > :10:06.about the action and the comedy and about the action and the comedy and

:10:07. > :10:10.camaraderie between these two guys. Inherent vice is more like it. It's

:10:11. > :10:21.completely incomprehensible but that's because the entire cast of

:10:22. > :10:29.characters are on dope. The little sister is a Japanese manga book.

:10:30. > :10:33.They grow up together and invite their half-sister to live with them

:10:34. > :10:38.and it is veering towards sentimental and melodramatic but it

:10:39. > :10:46.is a lovely story. It is a bit brighter than Chekhov. Almost

:10:47. > :10:48.anything is brighter later than Chekhov!

:10:49. > :11:14.We've had a real mix of weather types once again today. There has

:11:15. > :11:16.been some sunshine, some hefty showers but the sun was breaking

:11:17. > :11:17.through the clouds in Belfast in
