:00:00. > :00:00.medals and why Ian Poulter's foot could end his Ryder Cup hopes. That

:00:00. > :00:21.is coming up at half past six. Now it is time for the film review.

:00:22. > :00:23.Hello and welcome to THE FILM REVIEW on BBC News.

:00:24. > :00:26.To take us through this week's cinema releases is Anna Smith.

:00:27. > :00:37.We have got the nice guys, a crime comedy caper set in 1977 LA starring

:00:38. > :00:42.Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. Then we have got Me Before You, a British

:00:43. > :00:49.we be based on a novel and stars Emilia Clarke. Finally Race, the

:00:50. > :00:55.story of Jesse Owens and the Berlin Olympics. Nice guys I am a devoted

:00:56. > :01:02.and I want to see if Ryan Gosling can do, Lake. He really can. I

:01:03. > :01:10.thought he was very funny. It is from Shane Black. He brought us kiss

:01:11. > :01:17.kiss bang bang. It is the story of a Private eye, Ryan Gosling and

:01:18. > :01:22.Russell Crowe who is a heavy. They team up for an intriguing plot to do

:01:23. > :01:26.with pawn stars and missing young women and corrupt politicians and

:01:27. > :01:34.when they first meet, the Russell Crowe character is hard to beat up

:01:35. > :01:41.Ryan Gosling. You are a Private investigator? There is 20 bucks.

:01:42. > :01:46.Take it. Do you want to know why I am here? We can do it the easy way

:01:47. > :01:54.or the hard way. Old lady hardly to find her knees. They just gave up

:01:55. > :02:03.your client. You just gave her up. I thought that is what you wanted. Now

:02:04. > :02:09.I am very sorry that you did not get the message. I do get.

:02:10. > :02:21.What about now? Give me your left arm. Your left arm, give me yet. No!

:02:22. > :02:26.No! Look, when you're talking to your doctor, tell them you have a

:02:27. > :02:36.spiral fracture of the left radius. Deep breath. Do you mind if I have

:02:37. > :02:40.an apple? I am afraid I laughed all the way through. It is funny and I

:02:41. > :02:46.am surprised that Russell Crowe was so funny. I do not know if he was

:02:47. > :02:53.ever funny. They try to make him funny in a good year. He is meant to

:02:54. > :02:58.be as misanthropic as a heavy. It works for him, playing a gruff guy

:02:59. > :03:05.compared to the slightly effeminate that big a effeminate Ryan Gosling.

:03:06. > :03:11.It is business for him. Self-diagnosis heavy. Honour amongst

:03:12. > :03:19.thieves. They play off each other well. They go to crazy parties in

:03:20. > :03:24.the LA hills, pool parties with pawn actors, a great scene where Ryan

:03:25. > :03:30.Gosling jumps into a tank full of mermaids. He says he had to question

:03:31. > :03:35.them. Some great one-liners, cult potential. The plot was a bit

:03:36. > :03:40.convoluted. It felt it had about three false endings. If it was

:03:41. > :03:49.shorter, it would have been better. For fans of Carl Hyacinth who writes

:03:50. > :03:57.about these bad guys, who are quite funny, it sounds like a hit. I think

:03:58. > :04:02.will be. Me Before You. This is a British film based on a novel which

:04:03. > :04:06.is a weepy about a young girl played by Emilia Clarke who goes to work

:04:07. > :04:10.for a stern gentleman played by Sam Claflin. He is a quadriplegic,

:04:11. > :04:14.injured in an accident and it is about the romance that develops

:04:15. > :04:19.between the two of them. It is a familiar story, it reminded me of

:04:20. > :04:27.the sound of music in that the innocent young girl and the very

:04:28. > :04:30.wealthy older man getting together. It did get me in the end, it is an

:04:31. > :04:33.emotional experience but on the way it is terribly clunky. Emilia Clarke

:04:34. > :04:41.from game of thrones, trying to do this, the act. He seems to be in a

:04:42. > :04:45.drama. The director does her best but she is better known for theatre

:04:46. > :04:52.and I felt this did not come together as an melodrama or a

:04:53. > :04:55.comedy. This is the Friday night gender divide movie time, because

:04:56. > :05:01.any bloke going with his girlfriend or wife and he sees that, will

:05:02. > :05:11.immediately say, at the scene The Nice Guys? Ryan Gosling is in it! I

:05:12. > :05:17.do not think any gentleman would be interested in that. I would rather

:05:18. > :05:22.see The Nice Guys. It is for young girls who enjoyed the likes of the

:05:23. > :05:27.fault in their starters. It delivers on a very basic manipulative level.

:05:28. > :05:30.I do not know they still do them, at the American voice-overs for

:05:31. > :05:38.trailers were some guy says you will not be afraid to cry. I am afraid to

:05:39. > :05:44.die -- cry. Res. This is the story of Jesse Owens who won four gold

:05:45. > :05:48.medals at the Berlin Olympics. It takes us from 1933 when he was just

:05:49. > :05:58.trying to make it as an athlete and he is being coached by Jason

:05:59. > :06:07.Sudeikis. Here is a clip. Do you want to win a gold medal? Sure. Do

:06:08. > :06:16.you want to do it in Berlin? Unless you were planning on waiting. You

:06:17. > :06:19.know, I heard they do not care much for coloured folk. They do not care

:06:20. > :06:28.for the much here in Columbus either. Will that be a problem? No,

:06:29. > :06:32.sir. I just came here to run. Then for the next 28 months, you're

:06:33. > :06:37.either in a classroom or on that track, every hour, every day, and I

:06:38. > :06:42.do not care about your grades. I do not care about your buddies and I do

:06:43. > :06:45.not care as you have a girl at home, rolling down silk stockings with

:06:46. > :06:54.that look in her eye. We have a saying,. -- yes. Go home and get

:06:55. > :07:01.some rest, 9am tomorrow, we will see how good you really are. I felt this

:07:02. > :07:06.was an extraordinary story but it is an ordinary film. It is told in a

:07:07. > :07:09.plodding fashion. It is very slow. It comes into its own towards the

:07:10. > :07:14.end when you get to the Olympics seems. I felt that was more in this

:07:15. > :07:19.story, so many issues regarding race, this was a time when was a

:07:20. > :07:24.conversation about whether America should even go to the Olympics,

:07:25. > :07:28.because of Hitler and then Jeremy irons comes in as a member of the

:07:29. > :07:32.Olympic Committee, all that is interesting in theory, in practice,

:07:33. > :07:38.it was not told in a riveting fashion. That is disappointing.

:07:39. > :07:42.First of all, it is not a sprint, 134 minutes long, when you hit two

:07:43. > :07:50.hours, you start to flag a little bit unless there is a degree of

:07:51. > :07:53.genius. As you may have seen, that was not the worst, a lot of the

:07:54. > :07:58.dialogue is so familiar and I felt I was watching actors reading a script

:07:59. > :08:04.rather than his life actually coming to life. If you want to learn about

:08:05. > :08:08.him, there is plenty to say. It touched on it there, the fact is

:08:09. > :08:14.that people of colour as it was described in the film, in Columbus,

:08:15. > :08:19.Ohio, were not terribly popular. Nazi Germany was different and we

:08:20. > :08:23.know what happened subsequently, but the 1936 games, it was difficult for

:08:24. > :08:26.any black athlete to compete, but it was pretty difficult for them to

:08:27. > :08:31.train in the US as well, even the Army was segregated. It does show

:08:32. > :08:36.it, but not in a particularly interesting ways. The pep talks, the

:08:37. > :08:41.motivational speeches all seemed familiar. It touches on interesting

:08:42. > :08:48.things, perhaps the most effective scene is when he comes home, he

:08:49. > :08:52.comes home and he had a ceremony where he is asked to go around the

:08:53. > :08:58.tradesman 's entrance. There are moments like that that ring true.

:08:59. > :09:03.The spectacle, Berlin, 1936 and Hitler, did that work? That is the

:09:04. > :09:07.one that worked, they filmed it in the stadium and it is gripping. It

:09:08. > :09:15.is worth hanging in there for the final sprint. Come in late. Your

:09:16. > :09:21.best is a bit of Jane Austen. Love Friendship, very sparky and funny.

:09:22. > :09:25.Kate Beckinsale plays Lady Susan Vernon who is a mischievous widow

:09:26. > :09:32.and very glamorous who goes to the country to make merry with her

:09:33. > :09:35.relatives. It introduces a great actor, Tom Bennett, an eligible

:09:36. > :09:41.bachelor in terms of his money but not his character. There is a lot of

:09:42. > :09:47.buffoonery. This is a you certificate, but it is very adult in

:09:48. > :09:57.ways. It is all said. Jane Austen. Witty script. Your DVD, goose bumps.

:09:58. > :10:03.This is a children's film. It is one you could sit down to with the kids

:10:04. > :10:09.and enjoy. Jack Black stars as the author of the stories, they are real

:10:10. > :10:13.stories, written by RL Stine. They fictionalise the author and make him

:10:14. > :10:16.into a creepy character and it is a good idea, the idea is that his

:10:17. > :10:21.books come to light, they are under lock and key but his daughter and

:10:22. > :10:28.the boy next door find them and suddenly the abominable snowman is

:10:29. > :10:32.running riot. It sounds quite like timber trim. It is not. Originally

:10:33. > :10:36.he was going to be involved. How Young Kenny get away with? It is a

:10:37. > :10:40.PG. Thank you. A quick reminder before we go that

:10:41. > :10:43.you'll find more film news and reviews from across the BBC

:10:44. > :11:03.online, including all I am pretty optimistic for the

:11:04. > :11:07.weekend, it looks like the weather will be warming up, we will get some

:11:08. > :11:11.sunshine, many of us have enjoyed sunshine in the last few days, it

:11:12. > :11:12.has been stunning in the west of
