0:00:00 > 0:00:00That's all coming up in Six Nations Sportsday at 6:30pm

0:00:00 > 0:00:01with me, Olly Foster.

0:00:01 > 0:00:06But now on BBC News, it's time for The Film Review.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23Hello, and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News.

0:00:23 > 0:00:31To take us through this week's cinema releases is Jason Solomons.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35Good to see you, Jason. What have you been watching? This week, we

0:00:35 > 0:00:41will go to raiding, and cliffhanging with the new Lara Croft in Tomb

0:00:41 > 0:00:47Raider. Look at the meaning of art and find our inner ape in Swedish

0:00:47 > 0:00:52satire The Square. And we dip into biblical times for the real story of

0:00:52 > 0:00:56Mary Magdalen, as played out Rooney Mara opposite Joaquin Phoenix as

0:00:56 > 0:01:05Jesus.What a mixture! Tomb Raider is back. Did they need to remake

0:01:05 > 0:01:11this?Well, it wasn't very good the first time! Often they do remakes of

0:01:11 > 0:01:14things that are really good and you think, why have they ruined it? That

0:01:14 > 0:01:20they may be trying to get this right, because Lara Croft has dated

0:01:20 > 0:01:24terribly, the effects are bad and it was never quite right. Tomb Raider

0:01:24 > 0:01:28was sort of a teenage fever dream for many boys who used to play that

0:01:28 > 0:01:32has a game when it was early computer games, and they've now

0:01:32 > 0:01:36changed the whole figure of Lara Croft for this new actress, who I

0:01:36 > 0:01:40happen to think is fantastic, she's beautiful, gorgeous, that she has

0:01:40 > 0:01:45got this strength to her and let it race which she needs, because she

0:01:45 > 0:01:49has done a lot of running in this movie. She is slumming it in

0:01:49 > 0:01:55Shoreditch when we doing this, but then we find out she is the daughter

0:01:55 > 0:02:01of a billionaire, who is played in a flashback. She has to go and sign

0:02:01 > 0:02:11the papers which means that she will inherit his fortune. That was

0:02:11 > 0:02:17that's?Yes, Miss Croft. According to his will, I was supposed to give

0:02:17 > 0:02:23it to you. And technically speaking, you are meant to sign the papers

0:02:23 > 0:02:30first.I could never understand your father's obsession with those

0:02:30 > 0:02:35things.I can't believe how many of those were lying around the house,

0:02:35 > 0:02:39there's got to be some purpose to it.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07The first letter from my final destination.But he didn't leave a

0:03:07 > 0:03:08letter.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15Well, they've got all the great British act is in there as well,

0:03:15 > 0:03:20they've lined them all up!They are only in it for a bit, I have to say,

0:03:20 > 0:03:25for the money, I think! She goes off on her quest, this is a quest movie,

0:03:25 > 0:03:29she goes hunting with clues that her father has left her, these riddles,

0:03:29 > 0:03:33which you might start of solving them yourself in your head, but

0:03:33 > 0:03:36don't bother, because they don't make in a sense, really! It's just

0:03:36 > 0:03:40another level of the game that she goes to. She goes to Hong Kong, and

0:03:40 > 0:03:46then she is pursued, which is all very good, then she has to go to a

0:03:46 > 0:03:51remote Japanese island on a ship, and survived a storm, going down a

0:03:51 > 0:03:54waterfall and solving another puzzle. She does a lot of jumping

0:03:54 > 0:04:00and then she does a lot of dangling. LAUGHTER

0:04:00 > 0:04:08You know, it's a bit grip on factor! -- krypton factor. Considering the

0:04:08 > 0:04:13indignities heaped upon her and ridiculous scenario is thrown at

0:04:13 > 0:04:16her, I was mesmerised by how brilliant she is at this. She brings

0:04:16 > 0:04:21a politics strength to it. She's got great apps, fantastic skills with a

0:04:21 > 0:04:25bow and arrow when she's far, far better than the film she is in.I

0:04:25 > 0:04:29wondered whether you were getting to that. She is great, but is it worth

0:04:29 > 0:04:35seeing apart from her? It's very kinetic, the best I can say for it

0:04:35 > 0:04:42is it keeps hurling staff at Paul Alicia Vikander. But the climatic

0:04:42 > 0:04:46Tomb Raider is almost laughable, it looks like something that you get on

0:04:46 > 0:04:52the back of the cereal packet! Is that what this has all been about

0:04:52 > 0:04:56with Lexmarkmaybe there will be more Tomb Raiders and maybe they

0:04:56 > 0:04:59will get them better! They will keep trying. I'm loving the sound of the

0:04:59 > 0:05:04next one, it sounds intriguing. It won the Palm d'Or at Cannes and has

0:05:04 > 0:05:09taken a year to get here but it was nominated as best foreign-language

0:05:09 > 0:05:17film at the Bass does. -- at the Baftas, much of it was not in

0:05:17 > 0:05:21Swedish. Elisabeth Moss is in this. It features one of the great scenes

0:05:21 > 0:05:26of the year, which we are seeing here. An American actor comes in as

0:05:26 > 0:05:31an artist. It is an art world satire, this is an art gallery

0:05:31 > 0:05:34benefit dinner. He comes in to do a performance piece but takes it far

0:05:34 > 0:05:40too far. Here he is kind of goading Dominic West. It's about finding our

0:05:40 > 0:05:44in that year. It's a satire on the art world. Alpha can be dated,

0:05:44 > 0:05:48what's the point of art, is it ridiculous? This is about modern

0:05:48 > 0:05:54art. It's about the curator of this gallery that we're seeing here. He

0:05:54 > 0:05:58loses his mobile phone, and his life completely falls apart and unravels.

0:05:58 > 0:06:03It really is a sort of film predicated on that.Is that in the

0:06:03 > 0:06:07category of first world problems?! It is very much about white male

0:06:07 > 0:06:11privilege and what it is to be a man in the privileged world. Like here

0:06:11 > 0:06:16they are in their black ties, and he is an artist. This scene goes on for

0:06:16 > 0:06:1811 minutes and you can't stop watching, it's extraordinary, but

0:06:18 > 0:06:23you don't go how to react to it. It's all about, what would you do in

0:06:23 > 0:06:26that situation? It keeps throwing moral quandary is accurate. It's

0:06:26 > 0:06:33very funny, but also very thought-provoking, perhaps a bit too

0:06:33 > 0:06:40provoking, like the poking Dominic West in the ear.You have been to

0:06:40 > 0:06:47see Mary Magdalen as well.It is Easter coming up, time for a Passion

0:06:47 > 0:06:51story. This is reported to tell for the first time the story of Mary

0:06:51 > 0:07:00Magdalen, who has been cast as a prostitute since Pope Gregory in 591

0:07:00 > 0:07:04declared that she was a prostitute, which is apparently wrong, she

0:07:04 > 0:07:07wasn't. This film aims to correct that and show the Jesus story

0:07:07 > 0:07:13through the eyes of the only female disciple, Mary Magdalen, played by

0:07:13 > 0:07:17Rooney Mara who leaves her fishing village and follows the son of God.

0:07:26 > 0:07:31Mary.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42Each of you stand that the threshold. Do you fear that you will

0:07:42 > 0:07:47never reach the kingdom?Whose kingdom?You know as only are you

0:07:47 > 0:07:57do, there's only one true kingdom. And that is God. And God's kingdom

0:07:57 > 0:08:04has taken root. So we must prepare. We must wash away the stains of your

0:08:04 > 0:08:14corruption. And be born in you. -- born and new. Like children. I have

0:08:14 > 0:08:22been hidden for too long.I'm not sure what to say about that they!

0:08:22 > 0:08:25You can see why her father would be upset if she went to follow him,

0:08:25 > 0:08:32this kind of hairy bloke who's really boring! Whatever you think

0:08:32 > 0:08:36about the Bible, there's no denying it's got some great lines in it. Why

0:08:36 > 0:08:39this film hasn't got any of them is a mystery to me. It is

0:08:39 > 0:08:44extraordinarily dull.Is it a long couple of hours?Absolutely so dull

0:08:44 > 0:08:51you would not believe it! It even looks dull, it has got this Seppi

0:08:51 > 0:08:54town tablecloth fashion with the Stones everywhere in the desert. At

0:08:54 > 0:08:59one stage it was the greatest story ever told, when it was in Hollywood,

0:08:59 > 0:09:04now it's just the most boring story ever told. It's extraordinary what

0:09:04 > 0:09:08it does, trying to rectify it and make it a story for a new age, kind

0:09:08 > 0:09:13of a story for everyone, it won't offend Catholics, Christians,

0:09:13 > 0:09:17Muslims or even atheists. Is it trying to be too careful, is that

0:09:17 > 0:09:21part of the problem? It is trying to tiptoe over any heresy. People

0:09:21 > 0:09:28boycotted modern course is off -- Martin Scorcese's full. Any film

0:09:28 > 0:09:32that makes you cry for Mel Gibson has got it wrong! It makes you think

0:09:32 > 0:09:36of Monty Python all the time! There are scenes when people are going,

0:09:36 > 0:09:41Messiah, Messiah! You know what, he's not the messiah mightI do wish

0:09:41 > 0:09:46you'd say what you really think, Jason! So that's a long two hours

0:09:46 > 0:09:50and will leave it at that!I don't think this will make a lot of money

0:09:50 > 0:09:53at the box office. I think faith -based audiences will go and be

0:09:53 > 0:09:59completely mystified as to what this was about. It is a passion of the

0:09:59 > 0:10:02Christ without any passion.What should we be going to see?You've

0:10:02 > 0:10:07got to see Black Panther, you've got to see it now at the cinema, it is

0:10:07 > 0:10:11becoming a cultural event, people are seeing it for a five times, it

0:10:11 > 0:10:15has broken records at the box office, it is changing the way that

0:10:15 > 0:10:20audiences are going, black audiences are flocking to it, families are

0:10:20 > 0:10:23enjoying the representation. It is a great superhero movie, it's sexy,

0:10:23 > 0:10:29it's it citing, it's funny, -- it's exciting. People are hollering at it

0:10:29 > 0:10:33in the cinema. If you haven't been to a Marvel movie in the cinema,

0:10:33 > 0:10:39this is the one to go and see.And DVD of the week is also so lovely. I

0:10:39 > 0:10:45will admit, I cried at Paddington 2! But it's a delight, it's an absolute

0:10:45 > 0:10:52sweet, delightful, charming, sometimes silly but just lovely,

0:10:52 > 0:10:57lovely, lovely.Beautifully done, he is in his little outfits, wondering

0:10:57 > 0:11:02around. Paddington End didn't win best British film at the Baftas,

0:11:02 > 0:11:07that went to three billboards. This is one of the best British films

0:11:07 > 0:11:13we've ever made.And how good is Hugh Grant?! Is fantastic!Sally

0:11:13 > 0:11:18Hawkins is great in it, the whole Brown family, the whole look of it

0:11:18 > 0:11:24is perfect, it's a work of genius, Paddington 2, and when did you cry?!

0:11:24 > 0:11:29I cried at the end! I'm not going to give anything away for anyone who

0:11:29 > 0:11:34hasn't been its.If you want a marmalade sandwich, you can't have

0:11:34 > 0:11:39one!It's very sweet, wonderful. A mixed week but an interesting one.

0:11:39 > 0:11:44Decent, good to see you, thank you. That is it for this week. Enjoy your

0:11:44 > 0:11:48cinema going android DVD watching. It's terrific, honestly! Thanks for

0:11:48 > 0:11:53being with us, goodbye. -- and your DVD watching.
