:00:00. > :00:00.Indies. All that and much more in Sportsday at 6. 30pm. Now though on
:00:00. > :00:19.BBC News, it's time for the Film review.
:00:20. > :00:28.Hello and welcome to the Film Review on BBC News. To take us through this
:00:29. > :00:37.week's releases, welcome back, Mark. What have you watched in the last
:00:38. > :00:43.few weeks? Very interesting. We have Wind River. We have Insiriated, a
:00:44. > :00:50.tough and tense drama, set in Damascus. And It, Stephen King's
:00:51. > :00:54.classic comes to the big screen. It may be a classic. We'll talk
:00:55. > :00:58.about that later. You're such a horror fan! Let's start with Wind
:00:59. > :01:03.River. I watched the trailer for this in awe when I saw Detroit. Even
:01:04. > :01:10.the trailer is visually stunning. But so stark. Yeah, written and
:01:11. > :01:14.directed by Taylor Sheridan, saying it's the conclusion of a trilogy
:01:15. > :01:18.about the American frontier. It's set in Wyoming on a Native American
:01:19. > :01:22.reservation. There's the death a young women at the start, which
:01:23. > :01:26.brings together two characters. One is the hunter, tracker, who is
:01:27. > :01:34.dealing with his own issues of grief and guilt. The other is an FBI agent
:01:35. > :01:38.who is basically - she's in Vegas beforehand - she arrives completely
:01:39. > :01:42.unprepared, a total outsider, not even the right clones for the job.
:01:43. > :01:55.Immediately everybody thinks what's she doing here. Here's a clip. I'm
:01:56. > :02:04.June Banner. Are you by yourself? Yeah, just me. I'm the tribal police
:02:05. > :02:14.chief. That's Cory Lambert. He found the body. This is his father-in-law,
:02:15. > :02:16.Dan. We got the same job hey. I'm sorry to meet under these
:02:17. > :02:22.circumstances. Do you want to show me the body? I don't mean to be
:02:23. > :02:27.rude, I'm just freezing my as off here. The quicker the better. That's
:02:28. > :02:35.going to get a lot worse if you go out there dressed like that. The
:02:36. > :02:39.body is five miles in snow mobile. I got the call and this is what I've
:02:40. > :02:42.got. At the beginning there's hostility towards her character.
:02:43. > :02:47.She's tenacious. In order to pursue the case she needs a tracker on
:02:48. > :02:49.board. You saw from that clip how much of it is to do with the
:02:50. > :02:52.environment, to do with the landscape. You said watching a
:02:53. > :02:57.trailer made you feel - I was cold by the end of the trailer! It was
:02:58. > :03:00.extraordinary. Whoa, I thought, this is going to be bleak. That
:03:01. > :03:05.chilliness goes all the way through the drama. Actually, though it is a
:03:06. > :03:11.murder mystery investigation with a sort of lib rainth plot, it's about
:03:12. > :03:15.this land, about people being forced to live in a land never meant for
:03:16. > :03:18.anyone to live in it, about the hardship, the difficulty of that
:03:19. > :03:22.life, about the community and what I like about the film is it's very
:03:23. > :03:29.sympathetic towards its characters. It's all to do with placing and
:03:30. > :03:39.setting. That Wyoming back drop is brutal. Jeremy Rhoner is well cast.
:03:40. > :03:43.He tends to underplay emotions. A lot is done by saying and doing
:03:44. > :03:46.little. She comes along and has to prove her way and prove that she's
:03:47. > :03:52.worthy of this case. During the course of the film, you really come
:03:53. > :03:54.to see her character understand the bleakness of this landscape, the
:03:55. > :03:59.difficulties of the people who live here face. So I think it's a very,
:04:00. > :04:02.very solid, very gripping drama. Bizarrely, when you consider that it
:04:03. > :04:05.is narratively a murder mystery thriller it's much more about
:04:06. > :04:12.environment. It's about place. It's about those people. It's about the
:04:13. > :04:16.plight of the indigenous people. Your second choice now. This is a
:04:17. > :04:21.drama not a documentary. It's absolutely a drama. Set in Damascus.
:04:22. > :04:26.There's an apartment block where a family and others in the block are
:04:27. > :04:32.trapped inside by sniper fire and helicopters and gunfire outside.
:04:33. > :04:37.What happens is that there is a character who is the matriarch, who
:04:38. > :04:40.is brilliant, who is controlling looking after everybody in the
:04:41. > :04:44.apartment block. There is a young couple, who have a young baby, who
:04:45. > :04:48.are planning to leave. They're going to make the getaway at nighttime.
:04:49. > :04:53.But then what happens is tragedy strikes. There is an air of
:04:54. > :04:56.deception that surrounds the tragedy because the central character
:04:57. > :05:00.doesn't tell what she knows. Somehow through this deception it's as if
:05:01. > :05:04.the outside conflict comes in. Then you have a series of characters
:05:05. > :05:08.trapped within this really hellish environment in which there is a lie
:05:09. > :05:11.that they are dealing with. There is a knock at the door, it turns into
:05:12. > :05:15.something approaching a home invasion movie and it becomes very
:05:16. > :05:18.claustrophobic. Filmed with very tight hand held cameras following
:05:19. > :05:22.you around the apartment. You feel the space. At times, although it's a
:05:23. > :05:27.completely different setting, it reminded me of under the shadow,
:05:28. > :05:30.another story about conflict outside and a mother and a daughter dealing
:05:31. > :05:34.with the - there's a shell that's come through the roof, but it's a
:05:35. > :05:37.ghost story. In many ways this is a story about there being a ghost in
:05:38. > :05:42.this house. It's tough. There is a central sequence which is very hard
:05:43. > :05:46.to watch. Though it was very well filmed, not exploit Tivoli filmed.
:05:47. > :05:50.Occasionally it drifts into melodrama. It's a tough film in
:05:51. > :05:54.which you believe in the characters and in the battles between them and
:05:55. > :05:56.the stress that's they're under. You really do feel this oppressive
:05:57. > :06:02.environment that they're living under. All right. Now, the third
:06:03. > :06:06.choice I don't know why I'm laughing. Because you are right to
:06:07. > :06:10.laugh. Because you're back from your summer holidays, you thought, I know
:06:11. > :06:14.I'll give Jane one that she will not like at all because it's not my
:06:15. > :06:20.thing. I think you will do. This is It. I love your optimism! It's an
:06:21. > :06:26.adaptation of a Stephen King door stopper novel, which has been done,
:06:27. > :06:30.there's a very famous TV version with Tim Curry as penny wise the
:06:31. > :06:34.dancing clown, so the story is basically, a group of kids living in
:06:35. > :06:40.a town, who are all haunted by visions that seem to tap into their
:06:41. > :06:43.deepest fears. Somehow there's a central character, It, who seems to
:06:44. > :06:48.be feeding upon their fears. It starts with a sequence which has
:06:49. > :07:08.become iconic in which young Georgie meets Penny Wise. Here's a clip. No!
:07:09. > :07:17.Ah! Hiya Georgie. What a nice boat. Do you want it back? Erm...... Yes
:07:18. > :07:21.please. You look like a nice boy. Do you want a balloon too Georgie? I'm
:07:22. > :07:30.not supposed to take stuff from strangers. Oh, well I'm Penny Wise,
:07:31. > :07:36.the dancing clown. Now we aren't strangers, are we? How are you
:07:37. > :07:40.feeling? This has provoked so much debate in the newsroom today. I am
:07:41. > :07:44.the only person surrounded in a sea of people who had no desire to go
:07:45. > :07:49.any further than that scene. Here's the thing, yes, it's a horror story,
:07:50. > :07:53.there is a strong horror element, but it's a coming of age drama about
:07:54. > :08:00.a group of kids called the losers, who gang together to try and find
:08:01. > :08:05.this midgical evil to try and unravel the curse happening time and
:08:06. > :08:10.again to the town. The films that it refers to are poltergeist, the
:08:11. > :08:14.goonies, there's nods to ET, there's a touch of stand by me in there. It
:08:15. > :08:17.is a film which works because the director cares about the young
:08:18. > :08:21.characters. He cares about the misfits, the outsiders. You come to
:08:22. > :08:27.care about them too. Yes, it is, there are, moments of fear, moments
:08:28. > :08:30.of shock, jumps. Anybody who finds clowns fundamentally creepy is going
:08:31. > :08:35.to be very impressed by the performance. He does a good job of
:08:36. > :08:39.filling Tim curry's clown shoes. But it's an adventure. I mean it's a
:08:40. > :08:43.horror inflected adventure, but it is an adventure. This is the early
:08:44. > :08:46.years of the novel. There's a section of the grown up years, this
:08:47. > :08:52.is chapter one. There's going to be a second one. There is. This owes a
:08:53. > :08:59.debt to nightmare on elm street. At one point the kids go past a cinema
:09:00. > :09:03.showing that. There's a score that goes from lush orchestral adventure
:09:04. > :09:08.music to nursery rime chimes, the strange, twisted... You're not
:09:09. > :09:12.buying this. It's a romp. It's really enjoyable. It's really good
:09:13. > :09:16.fun and it's scary when it needs to be. Personally I would have liked it
:09:17. > :09:20.to be more scary. I still remember the first time I saw Penny Wise the
:09:21. > :09:24.clown, you get those moments, but I really liked it. What was best about
:09:25. > :09:29.it was how affectate it is for the source material. I think fans will
:09:30. > :09:36.really go for. It Let's talk about the wonderful Bill Nighy. Yes, Lime
:09:37. > :09:42.house Golem is trifric. It's set in 1880s London. A killer is stalking
:09:43. > :09:46.the streets. His detective is sent to investigate it. They know it's an
:09:47. > :09:50.unsolvable case and they want him to take the fall. The film is about
:09:51. > :09:55.theatre, the theatre of murder, the theatre of death and real life. So
:09:56. > :10:00.on the one hand, half of it takes place on stage, musical, half of it
:10:01. > :10:04.takes place in the morgue and out on these misty streets. A lot of hammer
:10:05. > :10:10.in the way in which it's lit, the way in which it's ghoulish. Very
:10:11. > :10:12.visual. Musical. Yes, and funny enough people haven't quite
:10:13. > :10:19.appreciated enough what a good looking film it is. It's brilliantly
:10:20. > :10:25.written by Jane Goldman, who adapted the novel. It's a complicated novel
:10:26. > :10:32.to put on screen. I really liked it. Danny mayes was wonderful. I think
:10:33. > :10:38.you'll enjoy. It it is gorery. It is gorier than It. There is Gothic gore
:10:39. > :10:41.in there. You see, there's a line between that and being scared out of
:10:42. > :10:46.your wits. Actually, here's what you should do, see both of them and then
:10:47. > :10:51.tell me which you enjoyed the most. Good plan Mark, back-to-back, with a
:10:52. > :10:54.bottle of gin to get me through it! I shouldn't advocate that, this
:10:55. > :10:58.might be on in the morning. We'll edit that bit, right. Let's talk
:10:59. > :11:03.about the DVD. Yeah, actually Blu-ray, shock treatment has come to
:11:04. > :11:08.Blu-ray. Shock Treatment is the sequel to rocky horror. It was
:11:09. > :11:12.described as an equal, not prequel or sequel. It's a mess, no question
:11:13. > :11:16.about it. The creator said it's a mess because it started as one thing
:11:17. > :11:23.and turned out as another. What's really interesting is it's becoming
:11:24. > :11:26.incredibly pressient. It's about a world taken over by reality
:11:27. > :11:31.television. It's about people thinking they can solve everyone by
:11:32. > :11:34.becoming part of a game show. The songs and dance routines are
:11:35. > :11:41.fabulous. When it came out, I thought this is a mess but I'm
:11:42. > :11:45.enjoying it. This is a mess but it's nightmarishly profetic and I really
:11:46. > :11:51.like it. Lovely to see you back... Just about. Nice to see you. See you
:11:52. > :11:53.next week. You'll find all our film news and reviews from across the BBC
:11:54. > :12:04.online. Find all the previous programmes on
:12:05. > :12:08.the BBCi player. That is it for this week. Whatever you're brave enough
:12:09. > :12:11.to see, I hope you enjoy it. Soft drinks are available! Thanks very
:12:12. > :12:17.much for watching. Have a great week, bye-bye.
:12:18. > :12:23.Good evening. If you're off to the cinema this weekend, it might be a
:12:24. > :12:25.dash from the bus or from the car as you said in there, because there'll
