:00:00. > :00:00.long in the memory. And we will head to Miami to hear from Roger Federer
:00:00. > :00:00.who is back in action since he hurt his knee running battle for twin
:00:00. > :00:00.girls. But now on BBC News, Hello, and welcome to
:00:07. > :00:31.The Film Review on BBC News. To take us through this week's
:00:32. > :00:43.cinema releases is Mark Kermode. We have the club from the Chilean
:00:44. > :00:49.direct. And you may have noticed, that man versus Superman is out.
:00:50. > :01:01.Unless you have been on Mars, you would have noticed that. Zootropolis
:01:02. > :01:09.looks good. It is set and designed on a city where animals live in. Our
:01:10. > :01:14.heroine has just achieved her dream of becoming a police officer. She is
:01:15. > :01:28.put on parking duty but let's the centre of a missing animal. Here is
:01:29. > :01:39.a clip. Wait a minute. Polar bear flair will stop. We have got to go.
:01:40. > :01:43.Whose car is it? Mr big and he doesn't like me. We have got to go.
:01:44. > :01:49.We're not leaving, this is a crime scene. It will be an even bigger
:01:50. > :01:57.crime scene if he finds me. Raymond? Is that Kevin? Long time, no see.
:01:58. > :02:13.How about you forget you have seen me, for old times sake?
:02:14. > :02:23.What did you do to make Mr big so mad at you. I may have sold him a
:02:24. > :02:30.very expensive rug that was made from the fur of a skunk. You are
:02:31. > :02:35.laughing all the way through it. That is what I like about it. It is
:02:36. > :02:40.about predators returning to their wilder state and prey being in fear
:02:41. > :02:44.of them. But it is a story of tolerance and people getting along
:02:45. > :02:49.together, love and understanding at a time of mistrust, fear and
:02:50. > :02:54.loathing. It is a story that has a good message, but it doesn't feel
:02:55. > :02:58.like it is ladling it on. You get the animation, which is really
:02:59. > :03:04.colourful and there is such detail in the construction of Zootropolis.
:03:05. > :03:08.The jokes are consistently funny all the way through. I started laughing
:03:09. > :03:13.in the first couple of minutes and I laughed all the way through. It is
:03:14. > :03:18.one of those things where you like the characters and care about them.
:03:19. > :03:23.It is a solid piece of work, proper family entertainment. The jokes work
:03:24. > :03:30.for young and old alike. It doesn't feel like it has still nod and wink
:03:31. > :03:34.at the older people in the audience. It is a real holiday treat. Nobody
:03:35. > :03:42.was more surprised and me. I really enjoyed it. It sounds like a wet
:03:43. > :03:48.Easter Day, if there is one. The club, you will have to try and see
:03:49. > :03:57.this out. We have reviewed the films of this director eyes-macro. This is
:03:58. > :04:13.a safe house, where the church are trying to safeguard the priests.
:04:14. > :04:21.This is a film that genuinely deserves the reviews, it is a flip
:04:22. > :04:28.side looking out of the window. Other times it plays like a hellish
:04:29. > :04:32.version of Father Ted. It is when the shifting times are so well
:04:33. > :04:37.handled and the subject matter is so dark, it was a finely honed piece of
:04:38. > :04:44.work. It is not for everybody and you will have to go out of your way
:04:45. > :04:48.to find it. A director at the height of their powers in terms of managing
:04:49. > :04:52.difficult material and making it into something completely
:04:53. > :05:02.unexpected. Even what we have just shown, it looks very grim. It has a
:05:03. > :05:06.really cold and austere look to it, which works really well with the
:05:07. > :05:11.subject matter. I know why you said Father Ted, I am getting more Harold
:05:12. > :05:16.Pinter. That is it good comparison, which doesn't extend to our next
:05:17. > :05:26.offering. I know this is the one you want to talk about, Gavin. I am a
:05:27. > :05:34.Batman fan. This is the follow up to Man Of Steel. BCB ends battle from
:05:35. > :05:38.the tip of Bruce Wayne on the ground and looking at it on the perspective
:05:39. > :05:42.of collateral damage. He sees one of his towers destroyed and this sets
:05:43. > :05:53.up a rivalry between him and Superman. Also their altar egos.
:05:54. > :06:01.Here is a clip. What is your position on bat vigilante in Gotham?
:06:02. > :06:06.The daily planet, do I own this one, or is this the other guy? Good
:06:07. > :06:12.people living in fear. Don't believe everything you hear, son. I have
:06:13. > :06:18.seen it, he thinks he is above the law. The daily planet thinking they
:06:19. > :06:27.are above the law is hypocritical, wouldn't you say? Every time you are
:06:28. > :06:33.here, you write an editorial about an alien, if you want to, could burn
:06:34. > :06:38.the whole place down. And there couldn't be anything to be done to
:06:39. > :06:46.stop it. I don't share your opinion. Maybe it is Gotham city and me, we
:06:47. > :06:59.have a bad history. I went into this wanting to like it. In Man of Steel,
:07:00. > :07:03.became a film of super heroes hitting each other. This doesn't
:07:04. > :07:11.solve any of the original problems, despite starting appearing to solve
:07:12. > :07:18.the problems of the end of the previous film. Flashbacks, dream
:07:19. > :07:25.sequences, a lot of it felt like a setup for another movie. Two and a
:07:26. > :07:28.half hours, is an awful lot of setting up. Considering the story
:07:29. > :07:33.isn't that completed, they managed to complicate it enormously.
:07:34. > :07:37.Secondly, they managed to mistake murkiness of the darkness. The
:07:38. > :07:45.Christopher Nolan, dark night movies had the sense of depth. This
:07:46. > :07:51.doesn't. This mistakes at length for depth. There are some interesting
:07:52. > :07:56.performances, but many get lost in the general stodgy, morass of what
:07:57. > :08:00.is going on. It does do exactly what happened with Man of Steel, it leads
:08:01. > :08:05.towards a great big, spectacular punch-up, which is far less
:08:06. > :08:13.interesting than it ought to be. The shame of this is, I want fans to get
:08:14. > :08:19.a movie they deserve. This has to do well to break even. It may do so,
:08:20. > :08:25.but the reviews have not been kind to it. I did go in wanting to find
:08:26. > :08:28.stuff to like it but came out feeling exhausted, feeling like it
:08:29. > :08:36.had managed to make stodgy and lumpen, something that should be so
:08:37. > :08:40.much lighter on its feet. You reference dark night, it shows you
:08:41. > :08:46.can rework things imaginatively and provide a psychological that to you
:08:47. > :08:51.didn't see before? Weirdly, psychological that is what is
:08:52. > :08:56.missing. In the central conflict between Batman and Superman, it's
:08:57. > :09:00.never established. It is a basic misunderstanding that goes on for a
:09:01. > :09:06.long time and doesn't seem to have any great heft. There is a huge
:09:07. > :09:13.amount of people onto vacating about monsters, day versus night. There is
:09:14. > :09:32.an incredibly annoying performance from Lex Luther. You remember him in
:09:33. > :09:37.another film, and you think, is this meant to be threatening. Jeremy
:09:38. > :09:43.Irons is in a new thing great. Then he is gone. There is an entire 40
:09:44. > :09:46.minutes in which he is not there. The problem is, for a huge
:09:47. > :09:52.production movie like this to be disappointing, people think film
:09:53. > :09:59.critics want to dislike movies, but I don't. I want them to be better.
:10:00. > :10:09.Tom Olbison is flavour of the month in all sorts of things. The best of
:10:10. > :10:15.the week is? High-rise. People either love or hate this. It is a
:10:16. > :10:19.novel from the 1970s and they have gone and made this period so it is
:10:20. > :10:25.the future looking at the past, looking the future. It is the story
:10:26. > :10:39.about the high-rise that becomes part of society and then starts to
:10:40. > :10:45.collapse. It is a fantastic script. Charismatic, central performance by
:10:46. > :10:52.Tom Hiddleston. He is brilliant. He has got better since we interviewed
:10:53. > :11:04.him at the British film awards. We couldn't hear him because of the
:11:05. > :11:12.screaming fans. DVD, Bridge Of Spies Tom Hanks and Mark Rylands? Tom
:11:13. > :11:18.Hanks is every bit as good as Mark Rylands. It is Stephen Spielberg.
:11:19. > :11:24.The difference in styles between Tom Hanks and Mark Rylands, makes these
:11:25. > :11:28.two characters have Sparks between them. And that is what is lacking
:11:29. > :11:34.between Batman versus Superman. Also, Mark Rylands does the best
:11:35. > :11:43.sniffs on-screen. It is worth watching. You will find more news

:11:49. > :11:53.shows on iPlayer.
