0:00:17 > 0:00:19Hello and welcome to The One Show with Amol Rajan.

0:00:19 > 0:00:26And Alex Jones.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29On the day when interest rates have gone up interest

0:00:29 > 0:00:30in our guest is riding

0:00:30 > 0:00:31high.

0:00:31 > 0:00:32He's the latest star to be celebrated

0:00:32 > 0:00:34in a BBC special - and here's why.

0:00:36 > 0:00:44# Money on my mind... # I'm going to love you like I can,

0:00:44 > 0:00:46can, can.

0:00:52 > 0:00:58# I know I'm not the only one...

0:01:01 > 0:01:06# Oh, won't you stay with me, because you're all I need...

0:01:07 > 0:01:17Let's say hello to Sam Smith!

0:01:22 > 0:01:28Are you well?Really good.We are thrilled to have you with us.It is

0:01:28 > 0:01:32weird seeing those clips.I bet you have seen them a million times.I

0:01:32 > 0:01:36haven't watched them in a while. Which is the weirdest? Which do you

0:01:36 > 0:01:42look at and think, oh!Like I can. Because I was very big.Because you

0:01:42 > 0:01:47lost a lot of weight.I was eating a lot of cheese back then.It is a

0:01:47 > 0:01:52funny thing you should mention you have seen them plenty of times. The

0:01:52 > 0:01:55best researchers on The One Show have uncovered something we think

0:01:55 > 0:01:59you probably haven't seen before. This is not on YouTube. In fact, we

0:01:59 > 0:02:06don't think it's ever been seen before. This is a 13-year-old Sam

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Smith with the Saffron Walden players and it is you on the far

0:02:09 > 0:02:14right. You are delightful.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19No!

0:02:24 > 0:02:33# It's useful to be... # We all go together

0:02:33 > 0:02:37# It goes to show what people can do...

0:02:38 > 0:02:39APPLAUSE

0:02:42 > 0:02:47There is nothing worse than a video from your childhood.I will hunt

0:02:47 > 0:02:53them down! It is amazing. I hadn't gone through puberty, I don't think.

0:02:53 > 0:02:58Do you remember doing that performance?I don't. I used to do

0:02:58 > 0:03:03pantomimes and like all the school shows as a kid. That is really weird

0:03:03 > 0:03:09to watch. We will talk all about your BBC special later. We will all

0:03:09 > 0:03:15be treated to a live acoustic performances of Two Goodbyes at tend

0:03:15 > 0:03:21of the show. We are excited.Back in April we brought you the story of a

0:03:21 > 0:03:24group of Indian soldiers who ran aground in Aberdeen when the

0:03:24 > 0:03:27shipping company they worked for went into liquidation. They feared

0:03:27 > 0:03:32they would only get paid if they stayed on board until it was sold.

0:03:32 > 0:03:37We sent Joe to see if they finally managed to find a buyer.

0:03:37 > 0:03:42It has been a sit-in, like no other. Some of these guys have been on here

0:03:42 > 0:03:52for a yearnd not paid. No money. It is a difficult situation. The crew

0:03:52 > 0:03:57of the of the ship are refusing to leave.I cannot imagine how hard it

0:03:57 > 0:04:01is to hear your wife crying on the phone thousands of miles away and

0:04:01 > 0:04:07not being able to do anything about it.We are very sad.Over a

0:04:07 > 0:04:11year-and-a-half later they have now been thrown a lifeline. They found

0:04:11 > 0:04:15out the ship can final I will be sold and if a buyer is found, they

0:04:15 > 0:04:20are first in line for payment.

0:04:22 > 0:04:27Everything comes down to the auction in this room today. The crew took a

0:04:27 > 0:04:32gamble - they had to stay in Scotland to stand a chance to get

0:04:32 > 0:04:37any of the money they were owed. Half the crew is staying until the

0:04:37 > 0:04:41ship is sold. For some the news the ship can be sold is good enough for

0:04:41 > 0:04:43them and they leave before the auction.

0:04:43 > 0:04:48I am very excited to go home. It is the time which we have been waiting

0:04:48 > 0:04:52and finally the time has arrived. All the hard work has come to a

0:04:52 > 0:05:02succeed now. I'll miss them. They have become

0:05:02 > 0:05:05very friendly with my mum as well. A lot of guys are going back home at

0:05:05 > 0:05:10the moment. They have no money - so we hope it

0:05:10 > 0:05:15is a good solution to the end. To give me an idea of what the ship

0:05:15 > 0:05:20can raise at auction, I have come to meet broker Paul Love for his

0:05:20 > 0:05:28valuation. How much is a ship like this worth?$650,000 my guess. Worse

0:05:28 > 0:05:33case scenario that is £400,000, delivered to a yard in Turkey. You

0:05:33 > 0:05:39have the costs of transporting the vessel, paying the crew, eninsuring

0:05:39 > 0:05:44the ship to Turkey. Is there any room with the emotional side?My

0:05:44 > 0:05:52hope gut is that ship owners love the business. I think they will want

0:05:52 > 0:05:56to see a good result for the crew. Back at the auction crew members

0:05:56 > 0:06:00nervously await their fate. How are you feeling? Today is the big day?

0:06:00 > 0:06:07Very excited. Hopefully no troubles. What do you need toover your costs?

0:06:07 > 0:06:12-- need to cover your costs £670,000.Is there much interest it

0:06:12 > 0:06:19will happen?I think so. We have had a lot of buyers coming in.Is there

0:06:19 > 0:06:28a reserve?No, there's a value.What is that?Not disclosed.The vessel's

0:06:28 > 0:06:32story has been reported worldwide. Does someone in the room see a

0:06:32 > 0:06:42future for this ship.Anybody want to make me a bid for?It is very

0:06:42 > 0:06:48worrying. Everyone here just watching? Thank you very much.

0:06:48 > 0:06:54£300,000. Any advance on £300,000? We are anxious to sell the vessel.

0:06:54 > 0:07:07We are not going to give it away. That is not enough to pay the crew.

0:07:07 > 0:07:13££300,000 once. Anyone want to come into the bidding. £300,000 twice.

0:07:13 > 0:07:29Third and final time... OK, I am withdraw ing sale.

0:07:29 > 0:07:33The crew have just left. They are very upset. It has been withdrawn

0:07:33 > 0:07:38from sale, the only bid was £300,000. Things are looking pretty

0:07:38 > 0:07:42gloomy for the guys at the moment. You all seem quite emotional. How

0:07:42 > 0:07:50are you feeling now?It was embarrassing for me. We were shocked

0:07:50 > 0:07:53over there and we tried to understand what was happening. We

0:07:53 > 0:07:56know people are interested. For some reason they were not bidding. One

0:07:56 > 0:08:04bidder came up with £300,000. That's well short to pay the crew's wages.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07Far too less for anybody. That's not even the fair value of

0:08:07 > 0:08:13the ship.I guess they were hoping to hear some news back home today.I

0:08:13 > 0:08:17am sure everyone will be excited, but it's not the best of news I can

0:08:17 > 0:08:22give to anybody. How do I give it to them? I don't know.Today they

0:08:22 > 0:08:25believed this ship was going to sell at auction. It didn't. Now they will

0:08:25 > 0:08:30try and sell it privately. With a number of interested parties calling

0:08:30 > 0:08:33with bidding already, they remain hopeful for a future sale.

0:08:35 > 0:08:40Hope may not be lost. Joe is here with an update. What is the latest?

0:08:40 > 0:08:44The latest is it hasn't sold. The bidder in the film is still involved

0:08:44 > 0:08:48in the process. I think that bidder was quite surprised to be the only

0:08:48 > 0:08:53bidder on the day. A number of parties had been shown around the

0:08:53 > 0:08:56vessel. He expected to be bidding against others the, that did not

0:08:56 > 0:09:00happen. The auctioneer is optimistic. The union expect

0:09:00 > 0:09:05something in a week or two. The big news is that the crew are now going

0:09:05 > 0:09:09to return to India. It looked like they would stay for the ship to be

0:09:09 > 0:09:13sold. They have realised they have done all they can. They were staying

0:09:13 > 0:09:17behind to keep it ship-shape for perspective buyers. At this point

0:09:17 > 0:09:22they have been away from their families over a year.

0:09:22 > 0:09:29An amazing response from the local communityThe union, the religious

0:09:29 > 0:09:35groups, taken out on excursions, and recently had a Diwali celebration on

0:09:35 > 0:09:40board. It is great to keep these guys spirits up. The hardest thing

0:09:40 > 0:09:45is not knowing how long it will go on for and when it would end. It is

0:09:45 > 0:09:50as the meant to the local community they kept these guys going and gave

0:09:50 > 0:09:53them the opportunity to stay until this point. It is good they have now

0:09:53 > 0:09:58gone home.I heard it could be this weekend they will book flights.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01Certainly in the remaining week the crew will be going home.Thank you.

0:10:01 > 0:10:08An amazing story. Every once in a while the BBC invites a megastar to

0:10:08 > 0:10:12perform a one huff off special. We have seen Adele and Michael Buble.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16Next week itted is Sam's turn.

0:10:20 > 0:10:25# I'm suffocating # I found love

0:10:25 > 0:10:35# Tell me is this where I give my life for you

0:10:35 > 0:10:43# I have to risk it all # Because the writing's on the wall.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47APPLAUSE

0:10:50 > 0:10:56Yes!What an amazing sound. Music-wise what can we expect from

0:10:56 > 0:11:01that show?I'm doing some new ones, which I am so excited about. There

0:11:01 > 0:11:06are quite a few new ones. A lot of this album coming out tomorrow is

0:11:06 > 0:11:10about, it has been produced in a way that there's so much more to it.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14There's more gospel choirs. There's more brass. More string

0:11:14 > 0:11:19arrangements. I got to make that all come true on this special. I had the

0:11:19 > 0:11:23choir and everything. The feeling was electric for me on stage. I felt

0:11:23 > 0:11:28comfortable. I had my family there. It felt like a homely gig, if you

0:11:28 > 0:11:36know what I mean. I wanted to feel connected to people. And Fern Cotton

0:11:36 > 0:11:41interviewing which, you will be fantastic. There are hidden stunts

0:11:41 > 0:11:47going on and surprising fans. . Here are two unsuspected fans when Sam

0:11:47 > 0:11:53rocked up back stage in a pair of killer heels.I want to wear the

0:11:53 > 0:11:56heels for the show. I don't understand the problem. They are not

0:11:56 > 0:12:04even that high, babe! I'm going to wear them. Do you like my shoes? We

0:12:04 > 0:12:07love them.Hi.

0:12:08 > 0:12:14Fabulous! Fabulous! I mean, literally, you are pretty good at

0:12:14 > 0:12:19walking in heels.I am really good walking in heels. That was not your

0:12:19 > 0:12:25first timeI have got lots. I have got five or six - I have got a

0:12:25 > 0:12:29wardrobe in different places. It must be so nice, speaking from

0:12:29 > 0:12:34experience as a pop star, it must be cool seeing that reaction from fans

0:12:34 > 0:12:39and being able to react with them rather than singing to them at a

0:12:39 > 0:12:44distanceIt was fun. As you will see in a week or so, there are a few, I

0:12:44 > 0:12:50am meant to be mean to them and act like a diva. And I felt so bad. I

0:12:50 > 0:12:55was like screaming and spitting out my tea. It was awful! It's funny to

0:12:55 > 0:13:00watch and, yeah, it was fun to like have fun with them. And after the

0:13:00 > 0:13:06last album, well, you have been away. We were bereft, Sam Smith! You

0:13:06 > 0:13:11left us for a year. What have you been up to?I had the most

0:13:11 > 0:13:17beautifully boring time. I was here in London. For me it was a chance...

0:13:17 > 0:13:23Life was all about me all the time - my shows, my music. It was important

0:13:23 > 0:13:28for me to be there for my mum, dad, sisters and my best friends and be

0:13:28 > 0:13:34there for their issues. I went to my sister's graduation.You need to

0:13:34 > 0:13:38connect with stuff that matters.I wrote the whole album in that time.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42I heard you wrote about 100 songs. There must have been a lot which

0:13:42 > 0:13:46didn't make the cut. Which was the worst lyric you had to abandon

0:13:46 > 0:13:51because it was not good enough.Oh, don't!We were talking about Des Ray

0:13:51 > 0:13:59earlier on. I am not scared of a goos I would rather have a piece of

0:13:59 > 0:14:06toast!Nothing on that level! I wrote over 130 songs. A good chunk

0:14:06 > 0:14:10were so depressing I was depressing myself!Both albums, I mean the last

0:14:10 > 0:14:15one and this new one, they are incredibly personal, aren't they?

0:14:15 > 0:14:20And does any part of you regret, I suppose, laying your soul so bare?

0:14:20 > 0:14:28No. Absolutely not. You know, I... That's part of my therapy. It is

0:14:28 > 0:14:34intense, but do you know what, my music is my dark, deep, vulnerable

0:14:34 > 0:14:38moments of my life. I save the parties for everyone else and the

0:14:38 > 0:14:41rest of the time, it is important people know that. It is important

0:14:41 > 0:14:46that people... People think I am sad and miserable.Having seen so much

0:14:46 > 0:14:51of you and not met you before you come across as somebody who thinks

0:14:51 > 0:14:57hard about who he is and what he's doing.I am trying to be the best

0:14:57 > 0:15:02version of myself. You said about the first album it was like a G and

0:15:02 > 0:15:08T, this is like a whisky. What is the next one going to be - a

0:15:08 > 0:15:13Jagerbomb?Pina Colada.

0:15:16 > 0:15:20Sam's new album The Thrill Of It All is out tomorrow and Sam Smith on the

0:15:20 > 0:15:25BBC will be on BBC One next Thursday at 8pm. We are looking forward to

0:15:25 > 0:15:25that.

0:15:29 > 0:15:35In a teak Team Rickshaw start their epic ride to the Clyde challenge to

0:15:35 > 0:15:41reach Glasgow on 17th November. On board is Liv, whose father died last

0:15:41 > 0:15:49year. Here is her story.I'm Liv and I live with my mum and my brother. I

0:15:49 > 0:15:57started dancing when I was about six years old. A lot of spins, wearing

0:15:57 > 0:16:01colourful costumes. Dad used to take me. It was something he was

0:16:01 > 0:16:08passionate about. I think he was proud of. My grandparents moved over

0:16:08 > 0:16:14here, so my dad was born in England. But he was brought up learning the

0:16:14 > 0:16:19Ukrainian culture. He was the instigator of nurturing the musical

0:16:19 > 0:16:30side of Liv. He loved music. It was the soul of what he was.He was very

0:16:30 > 0:16:36popular, friendly, lively, he was so easy going and laid back. He was my

0:16:36 > 0:16:44father, but he felt like my best friend. He was really special. It

0:16:44 > 0:16:51was October 2015 that my father got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. At

0:16:51 > 0:16:56the moment I didn't realise how much that was going to change our lives.

0:16:56 > 0:17:01They gave us 46 months. He wanted to someday at home. He -- stay at home.

0:17:01 > 0:17:05He did struggle. It was intense for the children. It was difficult for

0:17:05 > 0:17:09them to have a normal life.I didn't want to speak to anybody. I didn't

0:17:09 > 0:17:13tell anybody about it. Because I didn't want it to be a thing, I

0:17:13 > 0:17:24didn't want it to be real.He passed away on 7th June 2016. Liv and Alex

0:17:24 > 0:17:32and his mum and I were with him at that time.I remember feeling

0:17:32 > 0:17:36completely just like... Well, I don't know what to do with myself

0:17:36 > 0:17:46now. I felt really empty and numb. She became withdrawn and found it

0:17:46 > 0:17:52difficult to relate to every day life. A friend mentioned going to

0:17:52 > 0:18:00counselling. She knew a counsellor at a hospice and we thought we would

0:18:00 > 0:18:08try it.The children's and young people's counsellor. My role is to

0:18:08 > 0:18:12support children and young people who have had a bereavement or have

0:18:12 > 0:18:17got a relative or parent with a life-limiting condition.I remember

0:18:17 > 0:18:24instantly clicking with her. I feel like speaking to her is really

0:18:24 > 0:18:28helped me grow in confidence and accept what's happened in my life.

0:18:28 > 0:18:34We help provide young people with the space to work through their

0:18:34 > 0:18:40issues, their thoughts, their feelings, a space for them to try

0:18:40 > 0:18:47and make sense of the death of somebody. Without Children in Need

0:18:47 > 0:18:53we wouldn't be able to support young people like Liv.When I heard that I

0:18:53 > 0:19:00was doing the rickshaw challenge, I was just... Blown away. I mean I've

0:19:00 > 0:19:04never enjoyed doing exercise, apart from my Ukrainian dancing. It has

0:19:04 > 0:19:11opened a new door to me.She is cycling each day and getting further

0:19:11 > 0:19:17each day.Every time I get home my legs are like jelly, but it is worth

0:19:17 > 0:19:22it. I'm determined to do as best as I can to the best of my ability and

0:19:22 > 0:19:29I'm very excited to do it. My dad, I feel he would be proud of me. He

0:19:29 > 0:19:37would be over the moon that I'm doing something like this. She has

0:19:37 > 0:19:43been through so much, but she is the most positive person and she will be

0:19:43 > 0:19:53a fantastic team member. And I'm sure he would be proud of you.

0:19:53 > 0:19:59You can donate £5 by texting the words TEAM to 70405.

0:20:43 > 0:20:55And you can sign up for our virtual rickshaw on the web-site. Giles has

0:20:55 > 0:20:59been asking people what they would miss most about their time on earth.

0:20:59 > 0:21:07Tonight he is speaking to Joanna Lumley and this really is Giles with

0:21:07 > 0:21:13wings!Welcome to heaven. Or at least a version of it we're all

0:21:13 > 0:21:18familiar with. If it even exists that is. If it does, have you ever

0:21:18 > 0:21:22wonder what had you will do when you get here? Who would you like to meet

0:21:22 > 0:21:28in heaven and what would you miss most about earth? Today, I'm going

0:21:28 > 0:21:33to meet my idea of a heavenly star to find out what her idea of heaven

0:21:33 > 0:21:42is. And there she is.Look, is it a man, is it a bird? Is it an angel.

0:21:42 > 0:21:50It is Joanna Lumley. I had better meet her.Giles, oh.This is your

0:21:50 > 0:21:59idea of heaven on earth.The London wetlands centre and I adore it.Take

0:21:59 > 0:22:11me round and show me your idea of heaven.Look, isn't this wonderful,

0:22:11 > 0:22:17ponds and rushes and lakes and birds. I adore it here.I want to

0:22:17 > 0:22:21take you on the Stairway To Heaven and when we get there, who do you

0:22:28 > 0:22:32William Shakespeare. One of the greatest heart throbs of all time.

0:22:32 > 0:22:39As soon as I see him, I will have to kneel down and kiss his trousers and

0:22:39 > 0:22:44ask him everything. That would be a long greeting. There will be music

0:22:44 > 0:22:51playing. What would you have?Well, just for this moment, I'm going to

0:22:51 > 0:22:59ask if it could be Elvis singing One Night With You. He might mean it

0:23:29 > 0:23:34that is why you're a veggie?Yes. Are there things you would be glad

0:23:34 > 0:23:40to leave behind?I can't bear old sores kept alive and hatred and

0:23:40 > 0:23:45cruelty. So I shan't be sad to leave that. But I'm coming back even as a

0:23:45 > 0:23:49ghost and try to make it better. Have you had a happy life? When you

0:23:49 > 0:23:55have sad things happen to you, and they happen to us all, you push them

0:24:05 > 0:24:18person you encountered?I was dazzled by meeting the Dalai Lama.

0:24:18 > 0:24:22This something spiritual and kind. What is the greatest lesson yov

0:24:22 > 0:24:26learned?It has takening me a long time and it is hard to do, but it is

0:24:26 > 0:24:31live in the moment. Don't be afraid of tomorrow. Don't be regretful

0:24:31 > 0:24:35about yesterday. Live now.You get to meet your maker, what would you

0:25:11 > 0:25:15landing on the pond in the wetlands. I would love to be a bird. The idea

0:25:15 > 0:25:19of flying would be fantastic. The good news is though you can come

0:25:19 > 0:25:23back as a goose, it won't be for a while, because it was just a game.

0:25:23 > 0:25:27You're not going yet. It is over. You have been on the Stairway To
