0:00:19 > 0:00:25Hello. Welcome to the one show with Amol Rajan. And Alex Jones. Our

0:00:25 > 0:00:30guests tonight are... Hang on, they should be here by now. Ah, there

0:00:30 > 0:00:37they are! Please welcome the stars of the new Star Trek series, Jason

0:00:37 > 0:00:38Isaacs and Sonequa Martin-Green! APPLAUSE

0:00:38 > 0:00:44Welcome both.Just like that. Have you got used to being beamed around?

0:00:44 > 0:00:48It's all right. You have to wear special underwear, we're good.

0:00:48 > 0:00:54Steel.I bet you've done that a few times.We're going to talk

0:00:54 > 0:00:57everything Star Trek shortly. First back to earth, it's fireworks night

0:00:57 > 0:01:01on Sunday. Jason, we understand this was quite a big thing in your

0:01:01 > 0:01:07childhood. You did penny for the guy.I was trying to explain it to

0:01:07 > 0:01:12Sonequa. Couldn't make head or tail about why we celebrate the person

0:01:12 > 0:01:17who tried to blow up Parliament. We celebrate the guy who failed.Got

0:01:17 > 0:01:24it!You don't do this in the States do you?We don't. I was really

0:01:24 > 0:01:31excited about it.People used to make horrible effigies and you give

0:01:31 > 0:01:37money.What is the origin of the tradition.Guy Fawkes, who looks a

0:01:37 > 0:01:47lot like Game of Thrones at the minute on telly. He tried to blow up

0:01:47 > 0:01:57Parliament. But he failed. And we make a bonfire for it. When I was

0:01:57 > 0:02:02growing up, it used to be a time when people were horribly burnt by

0:02:02 > 0:02:06fireworks, made it taeshlly exciting. We start the weekend with

0:02:06 > 0:02:10a bang, Bryan Adams is here. He is going to be performing, proper rock

0:02:10 > 0:02:18royalty. He's going to be performing Run to You at the end of the show.

0:02:18 > 0:02:23Now then, do you consider yourself an honest person?Well, I've been a

0:02:23 > 0:02:28journalist for about 12 years so... No!No.A survey this week has shed

0:02:28 > 0:02:34a light on Britain's cheating ways. Our own straight as a dye champion

0:02:34 > 0:02:37of sportsmanship Iwan has been to investigate.

0:02:37 > 0:02:41Last week, American Phil Ivy lost 7. £7.7 million in winnings after the

0:02:41 > 0:02:45UK Supreme Court branded him a cheat, due to his dishonest poker

0:02:45 > 0:02:50playing at a London casino. But it seems we too are a nation of cheats,

0:02:50 > 0:02:53be it puzzles, board games or even to further our career. Just over

0:02:53 > 0:02:56half of Brits surveyed said they would bend the rules if it

0:02:56 > 0:03:04benefitted them. A pumpkin competition? Really?Basically,

0:03:04 > 0:03:09everyone in the village is given some seeds by one of the locals. I

0:03:09 > 0:03:14didn't plant the seeds. Didn't grow a pumpkin. The day before, went to

0:03:14 > 0:03:18the local supermarket, purchased the biggest pumpkin I could find and it

0:03:18 > 0:03:22wasn't until after the judging had been done, picking it up and looking

0:03:22 > 0:03:27at the pumpkins that I realised I'd left the label on the bottom of it.

0:03:27 > 0:03:32So I was collared, red handed.I've come to newly acclaimed Hastings

0:03:32 > 0:03:36peer to find out if we're really that bad when it comes to cheating.

0:03:36 > 0:03:41Cheating in an exam, I remember having the answers written on my,

0:03:41 > 0:03:45written in here, on my wrist. You go in and do it and look like that.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49Yeah, I definitely have done that.I wouldn't like to cheat you, but if

0:03:49 > 0:03:52there was something to be had and if you were going to win something, I'd

0:03:52 > 0:03:56like to win, it I'd do all I could to win it. If cheating come into it,

0:03:56 > 0:04:01I'd do it.It was in a pub quiz. You open the phone on to someone at

0:04:01 > 0:04:05home. They can hear the question and then that person Googles the answer

0:04:05 > 0:04:10and texts you.Why cheat then?I think we were just having a laugh.

0:04:10 > 0:04:15Have you ever cheated?Yes. It was at a school fair. All the mums given

0:04:15 > 0:04:19an empty paper plate. A sign on it saying "bake something nice and

0:04:19 > 0:04:23bring me in tomorrow". Had a couple of glasses of wine with the girls, I

0:04:23 > 0:04:27ran out of time. So bit of an emergency stop off at the bakery, on

0:04:27 > 0:04:31the way into school. Off with the cling wrap, onto the plate.

0:04:31 > 0:04:36Delivered it, as if it were my own. What would you cheat on?I whiz

0:04:36 > 0:04:40through the end of films. You whiz through films?I've got no patience.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44Was there a prize?There was a prize.Did you win?I did win.This

0:04:44 > 0:04:48is a good example you're leading here. Not at all. Not in any way,

0:04:48 > 0:04:52don't do this at home children, it's very bad.Would you never cheat in

0:04:52 > 0:04:57anything, a quiz?I do.Board games? In a pub quiz.Naughty.I got the

0:04:57 > 0:05:02phone out.Due win the quiz?No.You still didn't win?We came last.Hang

0:05:02 > 0:05:08on, you're not a very good cheat are you?No, I'm not.So there's really

0:05:08 > 0:05:11no shortage of confessions, I don't fully understand what people get out

0:05:11 > 0:05:16of cheating.We cheat to avoid a punishment. We cheat to seek a

0:05:16 > 0:05:20reward. I think most people would lie generally if they feel that

0:05:20 > 0:05:25they're not really hurting anyone. There is an evolutionary element

0:05:25 > 0:05:28insofar as animals have always cheated. For example, they might

0:05:28 > 0:05:33make themselves appear bigger to scare off a predator or they might

0:05:33 > 0:05:37make themselves appear more attractive.That's exactly what

0:05:37 > 0:05:41people do on social media. Robert redford comes along and he asked to

0:05:41 > 0:05:48take you to lunch and your husband didn't hear this?I'd go for lunch.

0:05:48 > 0:05:54It's all right.Cindy Crawford round the corner. We asked you two before

0:05:54 > 0:05:58the show whether you were cheaters. You said, not at all, Sonequa. Never

0:05:58 > 0:06:04cheat. Jason! You said you love to cheat.Oh, my God. First of all,

0:06:04 > 0:06:08we're both professional liars, that's what we do for a living.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11She's better than me because you bought. ItI don't think story

0:06:11 > 0:06:15telling is lying. Because I'm so competitive I cannot bring myself to

0:06:15 > 0:06:19cheat.Come on..I want to win. That's so boring. Playing by the

0:06:19 > 0:06:23rules. Cheating means you get to - that's rubbish. Winning is

0:06:23 > 0:06:29everything. Only losers Sehwag it's the taking -- losers say it's the

0:06:29 > 0:06:38taking part that counts.Off screen she is the Queen Mum of the entire

0:06:38 > 0:06:43game playing, except a game called Mafia. She cannot be trusted at all.

0:06:43 > 0:06:48She loses all the faith people have for her. I'm out.We don't trust him

0:06:48 > 0:06:54and we get him out. It's funny you talk about morally ambiguous

0:06:54 > 0:06:58characters, your character - the captain -Very professional that.

0:06:58 > 0:07:03You like that? Your captain in Star Trek is the first time you have a

0:07:03 > 0:07:08captain that is morally ambiguous. What makes him that? He's trying to

0:07:08 > 0:07:13win the war against the Klingons. He's surrounded by a bunch of

0:07:13 > 0:07:18hippies and idiots. In his words.I need to stock the crew with people

0:07:18 > 0:07:23like Sonequa who are prepared to think outside the box.You play a

0:07:23 > 0:07:27scientist called Michael Burnham, it's not a man, it's a female.Yes.

0:07:27 > 0:07:32How does this version relate to the original Star Trek?Well, we relate,

0:07:32 > 0:07:37we have the same connective tissue that every reiteration has ever had.

0:07:37 > 0:07:44They've placed my character in the institution that is the family of

0:07:44 > 0:07:49Spock. Spock is my surrogate brother. That's a big vain

0:07:49 > 0:07:54connecting the two of us.We're ten years before the original series. We

0:07:54 > 0:07:58have a blank slate to tell any story we like. When we finish in ten

0:07:58 > 0:08:01years' time, it's got to match up with where that thing started in the

0:08:01 > 0:08:0760s.You're the adopted sister of Spock, who never knew he had a

0:08:07 > 0:08:12sister. He would have been so happy to know.Did he sit on the secret?

0:08:12 > 0:08:16Definitely knew!There's a fair amount of tension between your two

0:08:16 > 0:08:20characters. This is the moment that your character tries to persuade

0:08:20 > 0:08:28Sonequa to join the crew.I'm not who you think I am. Before I was a

0:08:28 > 0:08:34newt near I was a first -- mute near I was a first officer in star fleet.

0:08:34 > 0:08:39I will never bear that rank or any other again. But it is who I am. And

0:08:39 > 0:08:43who I will always be.I know who you are, Michael Burnham. I know exactly

0:08:43 > 0:08:53who you are. I know you love being right. I suspect you hate being

0:08:53 > 0:08:59wrong even more. APPLAUSE

0:08:59 > 0:09:03I wouldn't trust you in a game at Mafia after that game.That's

0:09:03 > 0:09:08flirtation.You think!Massively.I did suggest early on that I had a

0:09:08 > 0:09:12terrible crush on her. They went, she's so much younger than you. I

0:09:12 > 0:09:17went... What? You're a big fan of Star Trek as a child. How did it

0:09:17 > 0:09:21feel stepping into this world for you?Initially, when they said do

0:09:21 > 0:09:27you want to be captain of star fleet vessel, I said no, because I grew up

0:09:27 > 0:09:31watching William Shatner swagger as Captain Kirk. I had no interest of

0:09:31 > 0:09:34being an echo of any of the great captains before. But they told me

0:09:34 > 0:09:39the story. This story is so of our time. It's a single story, 15 hours,

0:09:39 > 0:09:44serialised. We don't reboot to zero every week. If somebody dies, you're

0:09:44 > 0:09:47still upset the week after, unlike the original. It felt like something

0:09:47 > 0:09:50entirely different. I would never have wanted to be anywhere near the

0:09:50 > 0:09:57foot hills of that glory.Star Trek, the original production was, if you

0:09:57 > 0:10:01excuse the pun, all about pushing boundaries. There was a character,

0:10:01 > 0:10:04Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols, one of the first iconic black

0:10:04 > 0:10:08actresses. What was it like for you stepping into that tradition and

0:10:08 > 0:10:13playing a lead?It's phenomenal and overwhelming. I'm very humbled and

0:10:13 > 0:10:17honoured by it. Nichelle Nichols reached out to me after I got the

0:10:17 > 0:10:21role. I met her at the premiere. She told me to enjoy the moment because

0:10:21 > 0:10:26it's mine now.Here it is. Wow. Fantastic.My heart melted. It's a

0:10:26 > 0:10:30really big deal. Every I rags of Star Trek has pushed boundaries and

0:10:30 > 0:10:34ours is doing the same. Very much so.You've both been part of other

0:10:34 > 0:10:38fantasy series. Harry Potter, obviously, and Walking Dead with

0:10:38 > 0:10:43you. What are the fans like, Star Trek fans, in comparison to those

0:10:43 > 0:10:50fans? They must be a lot more extreme, right? They're quite vocal.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54Everything that was done on film was adored by everybody who had read any

0:10:54 > 0:10:59of the Harry Potter books. The Star Trek fans are very protective of

0:10:59 > 0:11:04what they have loved. That's a nice way to put it.Some of them want to

0:11:04 > 0:11:08tell us we're getting things wrong or right. What's fabulous is that

0:11:08 > 0:11:12their enthusiasm means that even when they're furious or outraged,

0:11:12 > 0:11:19they go, "I'm never watching again," So they say on episode seven, but

0:11:19 > 0:11:23most are glued to it.I certainly will be watching. Star Trek

0:11:23 > 0:11:27Discovery is available now on Netflix. In the original Star Trek

0:11:27 > 0:11:32the mission was to explore strange, new worlds, to seek out new life,

0:11:32 > 0:11:36new civilisations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. You

0:11:36 > 0:11:41don't need a starship to find extraterrestrial life, you can do it

0:11:41 > 0:11:43outside a hotel in Hertfordshire. Here's Lucy.

0:11:43 > 0:11:51Are we alone? Do aliens exist? Is there life on Mars? Scientists have

0:11:51 > 0:11:56been unable to answer any of these questions conclusively and yet, for

0:11:56 > 0:12:05a thriving community of UFO spotters there's little doubt. Where are you

0:12:05 > 0:12:08looking?Right there. The last time I was there we notice aid couple of

0:12:08 > 0:12:11things.It went really bright and shot off really fast all of a

0:12:11 > 0:12:15sudden.It's 70 years since the world's first flying saucer

0:12:15 > 0:12:21sighting. To mark the occasion, the One Show has been invited to join

0:12:21 > 0:12:29this sky watch. It takes place at the UFO acod my conference in --

0:12:29 > 0:12:32academy conference in Hertfordshire. There is indeed something going

0:12:32 > 0:12:38on...Tell me what you do.I'm a UFO researcher. I believe in, very

0:12:38 > 0:12:41strongly that we're in the alone in the universe. When did this all

0:12:41 > 0:12:48start for you?In about '92. Recall seeing this aircraft, which was

0:12:48 > 0:12:51indoed a UFO, something out of close encounters. It was there for 15

0:12:51 > 0:12:56seconds and then it vanish. What do we have here? We've got an actual

0:12:56 > 0:13:01UFO. It's coming over the estate, that's illuminating a TV antenna.

0:13:01 > 0:13:06What is this proof of?It's an aircraft under non-human control and

0:13:06 > 0:13:08the aircraft is extraterrestrial in nature. Some people might say this

0:13:08 > 0:13:12is not very clear and there's not enough evidence for your assertions.

0:13:12 > 0:13:17When I film something, I have it analysed. A lot of it is aircraft. A

0:13:17 > 0:13:23lot of it is satellites, 5%, 10% is unidentified flying objects, I

0:13:23 > 0:13:28believe under non-human control.Are UFOs proof of extraterrestrial life?

0:13:28 > 0:13:34Not really, no. I want that piece of footage where somebody like you can

0:13:34 > 0:13:39say, wow, that really is something else.Investigating UFO sightings is

0:13:39 > 0:13:44surely only the business of enthusiasts like Tony or fictional

0:13:44 > 0:13:50characters like Mulder and Scully. For 50 years the Ministry of Defence

0:13:50 > 0:13:57faithfully recorded every sighting via a dedicated hot line. Nick Pope

0:13:57 > 0:14:01who lives in LA, investigated the sightings. In a handful of cases he

0:14:01 > 0:14:07couldn't find an explanation. Two RAF air bases were directly

0:14:07 > 0:14:13overflown by a UFO. The witnesses included the meteorological officer.

0:14:13 > 0:14:18He described a huge triangular shaped craft, firing a narrow beam

0:14:18 > 0:14:22of light down at the ground and then shooting away to the horizon. This

0:14:22 > 0:14:26was a man with eight years' experience in the Air Force. So when

0:14:26 > 0:14:32we had a case like that, even us sceptics at the MoD took notice. We

0:14:32 > 0:14:37never got to the bottom of it.How likely do you think it was that

0:14:37 > 0:14:42there were UFOs?Unexplained does not mean extraterrestrial space

0:14:42 > 0:14:46craft, it just meant that we couldn't find, in that particular

0:14:46 > 0:14:51case, an explanation for it. These things are more likely to be Russian

0:14:51 > 0:14:54than martian. If just one of them was, it would be the ultimate game

0:14:54 > 0:15:03changer.The ultimate game changer is the ultimate goal, what do they

0:15:03 > 0:15:07expect from sky watching.Sometimes it's clear enough to see the shape

0:15:07 > 0:15:12and size of the craft, if it's a typical disc. Sometimes it's just

0:15:12 > 0:15:15lights. People just talk about what they've seen.Whether it's a

0:15:15 > 0:15:21sighting in the sky, or like a more, like intimate experience with like

0:15:21 > 0:15:24other beings. There's groups of people all over Britain for the last

0:15:24 > 0:15:2750 years who have done sky watches. It's just not something in the

0:15:27 > 0:15:32public eye.It is quite exciting. It would be amazing to see something.

0:15:32 > 0:15:37All our sky watchers just scanning the sky. The sky watchers have got

0:15:37 > 0:15:42all the gear, but will they spot something tonight?I think this

0:15:42 > 0:15:51one's moving above.All right, which one?There's a bright one here. Is

0:15:51 > 0:15:56that moving? There is commotion, when a light flashes across the sky.

0:15:56 > 0:16:00That was a bit a moment then, wasn't it?It was a moment, yeah.Whatever

0:16:00 > 0:16:05that was, I couldn't clearly identify. But I'm sure that they

0:16:05 > 0:16:09will continue their tireless quest to prove we are not alone in the

0:16:09 > 0:16:13universe.

0:16:16 > 0:16:25Thank you. There is other unworldly stuff in this video - it's Bryan

0:16:25 > 0:16:28Adams's new single, it's called Please Stay.

0:16:28 > 0:16:33# I just need a little time # A little time to find

0:16:33 > 0:16:38# All the words to say, Please Stay...

0:16:41 > 0:16:51Please welcome Bryan Adams. That's a good song.Thank you.You

0:16:51 > 0:16:54originally wrote it for the musical of Pretty Woman which is opening

0:16:54 > 0:16:59soon in the US.It is one of the songs written for it. It's not

0:16:59 > 0:17:04coming out until the end of next year.Is it true you had to pursue

0:17:04 > 0:17:09them to get the job of writing the music for that show?I went after it

0:17:09 > 0:17:14about ten years ago and that which weren't making it. Then a friend of

0:17:14 > 0:17:17mine in the broadway world told me they were. I said, if you are

0:17:17 > 0:17:20looking for a songwriter, I might be available. They said, come on, let's

0:17:20 > 0:17:25have a meeting. That is how it happened. You have a new album out

0:17:25 > 0:17:32called Ultimate. Not to be confused with your greatest hits.It is

0:17:32 > 0:17:39greatest hits but also the greatest set lists. It has a couple of new

0:17:39 > 0:17:47songs - future classics. Ultimate future classics.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50So all of these song, the older ones must take you back to a certain

0:17:50 > 0:17:55period in your life. Which is the most evocative would you say?I

0:17:55 > 0:18:00don't know - all of them it is like a diary of, when I look back I can

0:18:00 > 0:18:05think about where I was, what I was doing. It's like doing a film, you

0:18:05 > 0:18:12must know what you were doing at the time and were you were. When I see

0:18:12 > 0:18:18films I remember the place I lived, whether my kids had been born...It

0:18:18 > 0:18:23is like a chronological diary of your life.Recently you have done

0:18:23 > 0:18:35some incredible du wets in your time - Rod Stuart, Tina Turner. Recently

0:18:35 > 0:18:38at the Invictus Games you were with Bruce Springsteen. An amazing

0:18:38 > 0:18:52performance.It was super fun. We talked about two weeks beforehand

0:18:52 > 0:18:57about doing something. The phone call came in and it was Bruce's

0:18:57 > 0:19:03assistant. He wants to talk to you. I said, tell him whatever it,

0:19:03 > 0:19:09"Yeah." Just yeah!

0:19:09 > 0:19:20Can you sing, Sonequa?No. I cannot sing!That was a real fun gig to do.

0:19:20 > 0:19:26And your duet with Mel C is on Ultimate. Who else would you like to

0:19:26 > 0:19:35do it with you?Anybody with large instagram followings!

0:19:35 > 0:19:40Bryan and Beyonce has a wonderful ring to it.You filmed it in Canada.

0:19:40 > 0:19:47Your wife is from Canada?She's from Toronto.I got a call about a month
