:00:10. > :00:16.How do I turn an ordinary Friday into a really spectacular one? What

:00:17. > :00:20.I need is a co-presenter. Someone unfunny, maybe Canadian, but not to

:00:21. > :00:23.Canadian... Oh look there's

:00:24. > :00:25.Katharine Ryan, get in! Thank you so much Kala Kala,

:00:26. > :00:48.enjoy Pride this weekend. Welcome to the One Show

:00:49. > :00:50.with Katharine Ryan. And look who we picked

:00:51. > :00:59.up round the corner, everyone's favourite; the frequently

:01:00. > :01:04.misspelled Mel Geidroyc! There we go. We have got three more

:01:05. > :01:11.sisters with us. Performing for us later ST,

:01:12. > :01:23.Danielle and Alana Hime! CHEERING

:01:24. > :01:27.And if you haven't heard Haim before, this is what you can expect

:01:28. > :01:44.later tonight. # Just know that I want you

:01:45. > :01:48.# Just know that I want to you... #. How did your sisters treat you?

:01:49. > :02:01.Extremely bossy! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:02:02. > :02:05.A few men that. Sit down, well,! Listen, first things first, I hope

:02:06. > :02:18.it's OK, Friday evening, I've got the sliders on, is that OK? Very big

:02:19. > :02:23.thing these days. Yes, Stormzy. I have a pair, of course I have. They

:02:24. > :02:27.are bejewelled. We saw an amazing picture of Catherine in a meeting,

:02:28. > :02:35.it's worth sharing with you, you will love it! A sisters episode and

:02:36. > :02:44.it turns out I am in the original Haim. It is like children's dynasty.

:02:45. > :02:50.I don't get how it's weird, biggest hair equals best sister! Did you do

:02:51. > :02:55.your hat was it like that? My mother forced a lot of things upon us on

:02:56. > :03:01.this is one example. But it turned out OK, right? Yeah. We have an

:03:02. > :03:09.update on the One Show mobile phone plan we have spoken about each week.

:03:10. > :03:11.Yes, a Snapchat message has come in from "DD".

:03:12. > :03:13.He says, "I chair political discussion programmes on the BBC

:03:14. > :03:16.but my phone addiction is getting in the way of my work."

:03:17. > :03:21.There was a fork in the road and we opted for one fork. Now we are all

:03:22. > :03:30.going down that fork and it's time for bed... LAUGHTER

:03:31. > :03:38.This is my stopwatch saying it's bedtime! It would have been amazing

:03:39. > :03:43.if he got up and walked off. Got to respect the alarm. Details of the

:03:44. > :03:48.phone plan will be revealed next Thursday. Our musical guest Haim are

:03:49. > :03:57.celebrating their tenth anniversary today.

:03:58. > :03:59.of our greatest artists, David Hockney, turns 80.

:04:00. > :04:02.Andy has been to the great man's birthplace of Bradford to find

:04:03. > :04:04.out how they are going to be celebrating.

:04:05. > :04:09.In the R word it's the artist to make a difference, the interesting

:04:10. > :04:13.things happen when they rip up the book. I voice had a bit of an

:04:14. > :04:16.affinity with those mavericks and here in Bradford there is a local

:04:17. > :04:21.artists keeping up that fine tradition of breaking all the rules.

:04:22. > :04:24.These ambitious images are the work of Marcus Levine. Each one has been

:04:25. > :04:30.made using nothing more than a hammer and nails, but can sell for

:04:31. > :04:35.upwards of ?40,000. What is the attraction of using nails as a

:04:36. > :04:40.medium? It just sort of came to me that actually, if I could use the

:04:41. > :04:45.nails to describe the human body you would have the 11, this wow factor

:04:46. > :04:48.of suddenly realising it was nails followed by the fact they are hard

:04:49. > :04:56.and angular but probably soft and sinewy.

:04:57. > :05:01.This is Al Pacino as Tony Montana in Scarface. Did Al Pacino ever get to

:05:02. > :05:06.see the original sculpture customer yes, I said, just stand back for a

:05:07. > :05:11.second, it's all done with nails. He went, that's amazing!

:05:12. > :05:16.Markers can use up to 50,000 nails to create a single piece, and they

:05:17. > :05:22.can weigh between 30-40 kg each. It's not for the faint hearted. He

:05:23. > :05:26.has to wear protective goggles to shield him from any flying nails and

:05:27. > :05:30.he does it all without gloves. My son, it hurts when I hit. Most of

:05:31. > :05:37.the time I can just ignore the pain now. This thumb is basically dead to

:05:38. > :05:43.the sensation. I would have to really smack it to stop working.

:05:44. > :05:47.Next, Marcus has been commissioned to do a portrait of and closer to

:05:48. > :05:52.home. I've been keeping it secret for over a year and finally I can

:05:53. > :05:58.breathe a sigh of relief and say, it's a portrait of David Hockney.

:05:59. > :06:02.David Hockney is one of the most influential artists alive today.

:06:03. > :06:06.He's a Bradford boy, born and bred, and in order to celebrate his

:06:07. > :06:10.upcoming 80th birthday, a local community group has asked Marcus to

:06:11. > :06:15.create attribute of which the whole city can be proud. I wanted to take

:06:16. > :06:21.parts of all of these different photos of Hockney to create what

:06:22. > :06:26.looks like a Polaroid, which is a whole marsh to Hockney's work but

:06:27. > :06:31.done in nails. The first coloured nail sculpture in the world, a

:06:32. > :06:37.totally new technique I've created. As part of this new approach, Marcus

:06:38. > :06:42.spray paints hundreds of nails at a time, to create different colour

:06:43. > :06:48.effects in the finished work. Go on then, Andy. Am I having a go? Where

:06:49. > :06:52.do I put it? In that same line there.

:06:53. > :07:01.How about that? Not bad, not bad at all. You have a job!

:07:02. > :07:05.The huge pieces being installed in the little Germany area of Bradford

:07:06. > :07:11.and will be officially unveiled ahead of David's birthday this

:07:12. > :07:15.Sunday. And it's not just a case of mailing it to the wall. With the

:07:16. > :07:19.panels in place, it's possible to see the whole work come together for

:07:20. > :07:24.the first time, and I'm not the only one who thinks he's nailed it! It's

:07:25. > :07:29.very impressive, very impressive. Up until this moment, we didn't realise

:07:30. > :07:37.it was made from nails. Absolutely brilliant for Bradford, this. But

:07:38. > :07:46.there's one person just itching to see the finished thing. Are you

:07:47. > :07:50.nervous? I am. Are you please? I am, best birthday present ever. Is it

:07:51. > :07:57.your birthday today? Yes. Happy birthday! As you get underneath I

:07:58. > :08:03.noticed the frame of his spectacles actually stand out. I'm still a bit

:08:04. > :08:06.in shock, actually. I've never seen them all together. I have still got

:08:07. > :08:16.goose bumps! That was amazing. Can't believe it,

:08:17. > :08:24.never seen anything like that. And we should say happy birthday to

:08:25. > :08:28.Katherine. Happy birthday this Sunday, David, but yes, I was born

:08:29. > :08:33.once. This year my dad's card to me has kind of gone viral in the United

:08:34. > :08:38.States, because he crosses out the passage he feels doesn't apply to

:08:39. > :08:42.me. I love the spirit of you... He's crossed out the grace with which.

:08:43. > :08:47.This about childhood wonder, not applicable to me. And most of all, a

:08:48. > :08:51.load of stuff crossed out here about empathy and friendship. I guess it's

:08:52. > :08:58.pretty clear I love... Almost crossed out everything about me.

:08:59. > :09:04.Thanks, dad, thanks. Marvellous! I blame the state of parenting. Less

:09:05. > :09:14.lines crossed out, you can work on it. Now, we have seen you are most

:09:15. > :09:19.shows on BBC Mel. You and your sliders. Do you have chosen them?

:09:20. > :09:28.No, but in the autumn I will be wearing these with a sock! Trendy,

:09:29. > :09:33.Alex and Katherine. Am not sure. You can wear them on your new show

:09:34. > :09:39.Letter Box because you are behind a podium. I did, every single time we

:09:40. > :09:43.felt I was in these shoes behind the aforementioned Letter Box. That is

:09:44. > :09:49.an exclusive here about Letter Box, which starts on the 17th of July on

:09:50. > :09:54.BBC Two. Good. Tell us about it. It's basically a really fun and

:09:55. > :09:57.addictive and fiendish. You don't have to be a massive old quiz head

:09:58. > :10:04.to get involved. It's one of those shows. You have to try and guess

:10:05. > :10:08.words to crack the aforementioned letterbox, which is an actual box

:10:09. > :10:16.that has smoke coming out. When you win, smoke comes out and it rises up

:10:17. > :10:21.like one of those old organs of old... LAUGHTER

:10:22. > :10:27.Like people playing the piano and you crack the password. How would

:10:28. > :10:32.you describe it in three words? Crack the password. Very good! I

:10:33. > :10:45.have four words for you, let's have a look! No idea... Come on, come on,

:10:46. > :10:59.come on! Can I have a N please? Have we got a letter end? Yes. Now,

:11:00. > :11:07.Lydia. Two still to go. S, please. Have we got a S in this country? We

:11:08. > :11:14.haven't. Vicky... Get the air in. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:11:15. > :11:19.It didn't tell us the answer! I think it was Jordan. You couldn't

:11:20. > :11:22.give the answer, that was supposed to be a cliffhanger. You will host

:11:23. > :11:27.this show! I never know what the words are going to be, they don't

:11:28. > :11:32.tell me with the earpiece trickery so I can play along, much more fun.

:11:33. > :11:43.Honestly, it gets so tense. We loved the contestants. Janet and Lydia are

:11:44. > :11:46.the new Mel and Sue. They met and became firm friends through driving.

:11:47. > :11:51.One of them was the instructor to the other and they became best

:11:52. > :11:55.friends. I wouldn't... I wouldn't have made best friends with my

:11:56. > :12:01.driving instructor, would you? Definitely not! Know. Let's do

:12:02. > :12:13.favourite words. You have some weird ones. I like jiggery-pokery a lot. A

:12:14. > :12:24.made up word. Not at all, I think it has a hyphen, under Ward

:12:25. > :12:31.behaviour... Or if you are cheating. Your favourite letter? V. Mine as

:12:32. > :12:42.well. Simple but enigmatic. Let's do least favourite word? Tissue. I

:12:43. > :12:52.don't like it when people pronounce it tiss-oo. I'm having a funny

:12:53. > :13:01.thing. I don't like moist. A big favour of hated words, an aversion

:13:02. > :13:11.to words. Moist. Moist. Tiss-oo. A moist tissue. They sell tissues in

:13:12. > :13:18.those packets. And another word, panites. I think we need to move on,

:13:19. > :13:26.this is getting weird. Are you competitive by nature? Totally. With

:13:27. > :13:33.games like Christmas. Sherrard 's, the hacked game and a totally.

:13:34. > :13:39.That's the game, why a play otherwise? I am not competitive.

:13:40. > :13:44.Argue not? Well, the question is ladies, thanks for prompting! How

:13:45. > :13:51.competitive are you? Fancy having a game that playing Letter Box

:13:52. > :13:56.Witherspoon? This is like we are on the real show! I have to get into

:13:57. > :13:58.character. Can you serve them does not solve the mystery Word and crack

:13:59. > :14:10.open the letterbox? Let's see... I Alex Jones you go first. Pick one

:14:11. > :14:18.letter. If you get it wrong it goes to Katherine. I'll go for A. Have we

:14:19. > :14:27.got an A here in the secret Letterbox? I'll go for an E, please.

:14:28. > :14:38.Have we got an E... ? The hint is a strong title. Stays with Katherine.

:14:39. > :14:41.An S, please. SFOR sugar. Yes. Yes! An R for Ronald.

:14:42. > :14:56.She's on... F for flowers. No F. Back to you...

:14:57. > :15:02.H! A tricky little letter. Yes. Well done!

:15:03. > :15:15.Our house. Congratulations. Like Lydia and Janet. I didn't think

:15:16. > :15:19.I was competitive, but I am. You have cracked open the Letterbox.

:15:20. > :15:27.What's the prize? You can have a Slider! Victory and a Slider. They

:15:28. > :15:29.don't suit my feet! Speaking of our house, our next film is about a make

:15:30. > :15:36.over. If you have a scruffy neighbour in

:15:37. > :15:47.your road, you will like this. Stunning end of bed property,

:15:48. > :15:52.located in black heath, close to local amenities. I am sure this is

:15:53. > :15:59.the street, but I can't seem to find it! Phil, over here, mate! Oh! So

:16:00. > :16:03.this is the house I've come to see. All right! I knew it needed a little

:16:04. > :16:08.bit of attention, but this is beyond a joke. You can't even see it. There

:16:09. > :16:15.are overgrown trees, hedges and Ivy everywhere. I've got the keys. Let's

:16:16. > :16:21.go and look. Here we are! Blimey! There's the kitchen. Crikey! It's

:16:22. > :16:26.everywhere! There's the bathroom. It is even covering the windows and

:16:27. > :16:32.it's coming inside. Here's the living room and there's the garden.

:16:33. > :16:36.Or should I say "jungle! " This will be some job to clear thaul foliage.

:16:37. > :16:42.So, Max, where do you start this sort of job? I am starting from the

:16:43. > :16:46.ground and working my way up. A lot of growth in the brick work. Get the

:16:47. > :16:53.growth out of the front taken away and work our way out of this. Does

:16:54. > :16:59.overgrowth ruin a house? It does. It rips into the guttering and it can

:17:00. > :17:03.cause serious damage. Ivy on brick walls in moderation can look

:17:04. > :17:10.beautiful. It also has many other beneficial factors. It is a very

:17:11. > :17:14.good insulating lawyer to keep the -- layer to keep the heat in. You

:17:15. > :17:19.have to be careful and keep an eye on it. If you don't, the ivy reaches

:17:20. > :17:23.the wooden parts of the house, be alert. So, Chris, you live next door

:17:24. > :17:26.to the house, you must be delighted with the work going on. . It would

:17:27. > :17:31.be nice to see sunshine for the first time in five years. How has it

:17:32. > :17:35.affected your house and garden? It has been a problem with the ivy

:17:36. > :17:39.taking over. Constantly clearing up leaves and the branches that fall

:17:40. > :17:44.down. Did you know the previous owner? Yeah, I did. He was a bit of

:17:45. > :17:52.a recluse, but sadly after Christmas he died. And now you are an estate

:17:53. > :17:56.agent. Does it matter the state it is in, or is it all about location,

:17:57. > :17:59.location, location? It is about what they have to spend on that to make

:18:00. > :18:04.it liveable. It will be a lot of money.

:18:05. > :18:08.Now, that looks like it's been there for years. You can see the damage

:18:09. > :18:13.it's caused in the guttering at the top and into the lead roof over

:18:14. > :18:17.there. Hopefully after pricing it away a bit it will start to go away

:18:18. > :18:22.a bit. And hopefully the front of the house won't come down! Hopefully

:18:23. > :18:25.not. The rest of the street have seen the cutting and trimming and

:18:26. > :18:29.have taken an interest. What did you think of that lot? We didn't realise

:18:30. > :18:35.it was a house when we first moved in. I am happy. It was getting

:18:36. > :18:40.dangerous, branches would hit you in the face. This is it before the ivy

:18:41. > :18:46.took over. Was it spooky when you walked past at night? Especially if

:18:47. > :18:50.I was walking home at night-time. 20-plus years it has been like it.

:18:51. > :18:53.We are all happy now. When I turned thup morning I knew it would be a

:18:54. > :18:57.big job. Max and the boys have cracked on and it is amazing to see

:18:58. > :19:04.the house coming back to live from under all that foliage.

:19:05. > :19:07.Anded they den't get all -- and they didn't get all the ivy because there

:19:08. > :19:13.were birdies in it. My daughter's favourite show is

:19:14. > :19:16.Pitch Battle. What can we expect from this Saturday? This Saturday

:19:17. > :19:31.will be intensely good. We have Seal! The artist? Is he

:19:32. > :19:42.keeping it Seal! He is so Seal. What does that mean? I like to tell

:19:43. > :19:49.people I am keeping it Seal! His hashtag is hashtagrealtalk. He is a

:19:50. > :19:54.very, very good judge. It is on BBC One, Saturday, 7. 30pm, as always.

:19:55. > :20:02.Let's see what we can look forward to.

:20:03. > :20:07.# I never knew she could dance like this

:20:08. > :20:13.# Speaks Spanish # Bonita

:20:14. > :20:16.# Shakira # Shakira

:20:17. > :20:20.# My head don't lie # Baby, let's go

:20:21. > :20:24.# Real slow # Because baby this is per can

:20:25. > :20:31.fecto! What's the favourite moment of the

:20:32. > :20:39.series for you at the moment? Goodness! So many. Probably seeing

:20:40. > :20:46.chukka chan coming on in the latter half of the show in a pair of

:20:47. > :20:51.amazing, look at the E wok boots. Massive fur boots. Like half fancy

:20:52. > :20:56.dress. I have never seen a boot as wide as that. Literally full fur,

:20:57. > :21:01.sort of this wide. She came on... She can do it. She can pull it off.

:21:02. > :21:07.You are obsessed with footwear, we have to say! I loved the episode

:21:08. > :21:13.where you were beatboxing. I think you nailed it. Oh, dear! Oh, no!

:21:14. > :21:27.Embarrassing! You said you fancied joining a Rock Choir. Will we see

:21:28. > :21:30.you sing any time soon? I love the idea of being in a massive choir. I

:21:31. > :21:35.love the idea of having a T-shirt that says the name of the choir. I

:21:36. > :21:39.love that idea of belonging somewhere, with some people! I

:21:40. > :21:47.genuinely do. I love being... Belonging! I love to be in a gang.

:21:48. > :21:54.We hear you love Howard Jones. Ho-JO! A one-man band with spiky

:21:55. > :22:02.hair supported by a crazy dancer wearing chains and not much else.

:22:03. > :22:08.It sounds like a gimmick, performance art turned pop song, but

:22:09. > :22:14.it took Howard Jones into the top ten and led to an international

:22:15. > :22:20.career, with hits like What is Love. And like to get To Know You Well. If

:22:21. > :22:24.he had taken his music teacher's criticism to heart here in High

:22:25. > :22:29.Wycombe, it could have all turned out differently. They didn't want me

:22:30. > :22:33.to music A level. I had long hair. I was a bit of a rebel. I didn't

:22:34. > :22:37.really fit in. I did sciences instead. The great thing with that

:22:38. > :22:43.is it made me more determined with my music. Despite the lack of

:22:44. > :22:47.encouragement Howard studied music at college and started to perform

:22:48. > :22:52.locally, funding it by working days in a factory. That's the factory I

:22:53. > :22:57.worked in. I was rolling clingfilm every day into sheets. I was coming

:22:58. > :23:03.home, recording all through the night. All the letters and demos I

:23:04. > :23:06.sent out to people, I was getting rejections, hundreds. You keep

:23:07. > :23:11.going. Did you tell your fellow workers what you were up to? I said

:23:12. > :23:15.one day I will walk out of here and I will do my music and they kind of

:23:16. > :23:20.humoured me and said, of course you will, Howard. One day, I did.

:23:21. > :23:25.Finally getting record company interest, Howard started work on

:23:26. > :23:31.what was to become New Song, inspired by his own struggles. I

:23:32. > :23:35.used to come to the hill to reflect because it gave me perspective on

:23:36. > :23:38.life. I am sure I was just about to get somewhere, you know. I wanted to

:23:39. > :23:41.pour all that into the lyrics and say, I've been waiting for so long.

:23:42. > :23:47.That is my sorry. That is my history. You know, I have been in

:23:48. > :23:52.bands since I was 14. Got signed at 28. It all fits. I remember playing

:23:53. > :23:56.it for the first time and my lovely, brilliant supporters they went

:23:57. > :24:02.mental. I thought, this is going to be an important song for me. One of

:24:03. > :24:07.Howard's supporters at the time, Jed, was instrumental in helping his

:24:08. > :24:12.performances attract attention. Jed would dance in the audience,

:24:13. > :24:16.amazingly. I couldn't keep my eyes off him. I had my own way of

:24:17. > :24:20.interpreting what he was singing. People noticed it. That was the

:24:21. > :24:24.point. I thought, this man belongs here with me. Let's do it. I loved

:24:25. > :24:29.having Jed on stage with me. It was like a performance art thing. The

:24:30. > :24:34.stage was covered with TV monitors, mannequins, which had names. It was

:24:35. > :24:42.unpredictable, like, what's going to happen now? And what are those

:24:43. > :24:48.chains about? What were they about He was imprisoned in his own mental

:24:49. > :24:52.prison. And it really worked with the New Song lyrics. That was

:24:53. > :24:56.brought into the video. The video very much was telling the story of

:24:57. > :25:01.my journey, it started in the factory and then we went to a

:25:02. > :25:04.school. I was on top of the desks, singing to the kids. Question what's

:25:05. > :25:12.going on in your world. Think for yourself. When New Song was released

:25:13. > :25:16.it was rocketed into the top ten following an appearance by Howard

:25:17. > :25:20.and Jed on Top of the Pops. Jed worked with Howard for seven years

:25:21. > :25:25.before they finally retired the costumes and the chains. Today,

:25:26. > :25:29.Howard is back at his old school. He's come to perform for the pupils

:25:30. > :25:34.and offer them advice. I used to attend this school. I then went on

:25:35. > :25:38.to music college up in Manchester. When I came back to High Wycombe I

:25:39. > :25:43.wanted to do my own music, so I came up with this idea for a song that

:25:44. > :25:57.was about saying to people, don't be afraid to have a go.

:25:58. > :26:01.# Coming now to sing this song. It may be a difficult journey and

:26:02. > :26:06.you may have ups and downs on your way, but if you have something in

:26:07. > :26:13.your heart unique to you, you have to go for it.

:26:14. > :26:20.# Don't back up # See the sites

:26:21. > :26:27.# Drive off your mental chains # Oh-oh-oh!

:26:28. > :26:31.If that has whetted your appetite for music from Howard, like it has

:26:32. > :26:39.Mel, a combination of his best hits will be released on 28th July. You

:26:40. > :26:46.love Jed, chain man. Jed is the chain man. A whole education for us

:26:47. > :26:50.on Howard Jones. You had never heard of Ho-JO! A big thank you to

:26:51. > :26:56.Katherine for this evening. It has been lovely to have you. Have you

:26:57. > :27:08.enjoyed? I always love The One Show. Back any day. Thank you to Mel.

:27:09. > :27:14.Pitch Battle is on tomorrow at 7. 30pm on BBC One.

:27:15. > :27:17.But now, with one taken from their album, Something To Tell You, out

:27:18. > :27:26.today, it is the all-girl One Show and it is Hime.

:27:27. > :28:12.# I'll take the fall and the fault in us

:28:13. > :28:15.# I'll give you all the love I never gave before I left you

:28:16. > :28:28.# I'll take the fall and the fault in us

:28:29. > :28:31.# I'll give you all the love I never gave before I left you

:28:32. > :29:03.# All that time is gone, no more fearing control

:29:04. > :29:19.# I'll take the fall and the fault in us

:29:20. > :29:23.# I'll give you all the love I never gave before I left you

:29:24. > :29:37.# Just know that I want you I'll take the fall and the fault in us

:29:38. > :29:44.# I'll give you all the love I never gave before I left you
