0:00:15 > 0:00:19Hello and welcome to The One Show with Patrick Kielty.

0:00:19 > 0:00:29And Alex Jones.

0:00:51 > 0:00:52This Christmas, she'll be stinking up our screens

0:00:52 > 0:00:54in David Walliams' Ratburger and filling our stockings

0:00:54 > 0:01:04with her album of show tunes and standards.

0:01:34 > 0:01:47It is Sheridan Smith.Look, thanks for joining us. You are so busy. I

0:01:47 > 0:01:57am sure you are here for a rest. They have let me come away. I am

0:01:57 > 0:02:05filming for an ITV drama. You will be singing for us later, City Of

0:02:05 > 0:02:16Stars From La La Land. The project you are filming for ITV is a

0:02:16 > 0:02:28complete contrast.I play a cleaner. Was that much of a stretch?Not at

0:02:28 > 0:02:40all. I am a scrubber, aren't I? Also, you have the showbiz

0:02:40 > 0:02:45Hollywood's singing, you have the BAFTAs and the Olivier awards.

0:02:45 > 0:02:49Keeping your feet on the ground can you like to hang out with stars like

0:02:49 > 0:02:56Barry Manilow. Who else do we have? Dolly Parton. Barbara Streisand.

0:02:56 > 0:03:08They are my dogs. When your dogs have those names. You have seven but

0:03:08 > 0:03:17you have brought two tonight. Which one is that? That is Pandora and

0:03:17 > 0:03:23little dumbo with his ears, but bold one. And that is Leslie, my make up

0:03:23 > 0:03:33artist. I love that they have just been on the show. That is cool.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36A new Hollywood film about a little boy with a facial condition that

0:03:36 > 0:03:39leads to other children bullying him has proved a hit around the world.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42Wonder may be a drama but the struggles he has fitting

0:03:42 > 0:03:44in and being accepted are based on fact.

0:03:44 > 0:03:49Every now and then film comes along offering people a glimpse into a

0:03:49 > 0:03:54unique struggle. Wonder is one such film.Next week I start fifth grade.

0:03:54 > 0:04:00Since I have never been to a real school before, I am petrified.It

0:04:00 > 0:04:05tells the story of a ten-year-old boy with a rare facial difference as

0:04:05 > 0:04:10he starts mainstream school for the first time.Dear God, please make

0:04:10 > 0:04:14them be nice to him.It is a heart-warming tale of acceptance

0:04:14 > 0:04:18also a story some families in the UK can directly relate to.I think

0:04:18 > 0:04:23we're all done if you want to get dressed and do your teeth. That is

0:04:23 > 0:04:27fine. This is Stuart Fulton he is 12 and living with a rare neurological

0:04:27 > 0:04:36disorder.His sixth and seventh nerd don't work for this area. It bunches

0:04:36 > 0:04:44his tongue and makes him struggle with his teeth.Tell me about the

0:04:44 > 0:04:47anxiety you feel as a parent with him going out into the world.Things

0:04:47 > 0:04:52like when he started secondary school, I was worried about people

0:04:52 > 0:04:56making comments. Will it affect him? When people look they do not know

0:04:56 > 0:05:01what is wrong with him. Some of them up and ask sometimes. You can

0:05:01 > 0:05:05explain it to him. Once his personality punches through and you

0:05:05 > 0:05:10realise he is a cheeky kid who is a bit different.Mrs Taylor told me

0:05:10 > 0:05:17you did really well in PA yesterday. See you later. Love you. According

0:05:17 > 0:05:23to the reality, Changing Faces, 15,000 children are born each year

0:05:23 > 0:05:28with a physical difference. Stuart attends mainstream school and it has

0:05:28 > 0:05:42a learning assistant. Tell me about how things are at school? He says

0:05:42 > 0:05:49that it is Taylor is always there for me. Thank you. -- Mrs Taylor. If

0:05:49 > 0:05:54they need explaining, I explain to them. How difficult can it be for

0:05:54 > 0:05:58children with facial differences? In mainstream school, it is very

0:05:58 > 0:06:06difficult. Not many people have a to one. They are vulnerable. You not

0:06:06 > 0:06:15ugly.You would say that. You are my man. Because I am your mamma, I know

0:06:15 > 0:06:22you the most. What do Stewart and his family make of it? You thought

0:06:22 > 0:06:30it was very good.He made a lot of friends in the end out of what

0:06:30 > 0:06:36happened.I connected with on so many levels. Once I started getting

0:06:36 > 0:06:47into it you realise that so much of that film does ring true.Did you

0:06:47 > 0:06:59get that? It is not what you look like, it is how you are in now.

0:06:59 > 0:07:05Thanks to Stuart and his family.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09You have played lots of people based on real-life characters. Is it

0:07:09 > 0:07:16tougher creating a character from scratch? How does it work?I love

0:07:16 > 0:07:19playing real people. You have cemetery such that you lose yourself

0:07:19 > 0:07:25in it for that this is hard for me, the whole kind of being me think. I

0:07:25 > 0:07:29like to lose myself in characters. When they are real people you get to

0:07:29 > 0:07:39know them. The lovely Lisa who I played in the C Word, you just get a

0:07:39 > 0:07:46connection.All these characters have the fact in, the -- in common

0:07:46 > 0:07:54that they are not scared to stand up for other people's rights.I will

0:07:54 > 0:08:00batter you. Go on, try me. This place is all wrong. They are not the

0:08:00 > 0:08:06least bit interested in the young redhead from Liverpool. I don't want

0:08:06 > 0:08:12to think about all the benefits of having a baby. I thought about that.

0:08:12 > 0:08:18Love and satisfaction. No, the benefit. Child benefit. Family

0:08:18 > 0:08:25credit. I hate you but I refused to let this family go under. There we

0:08:25 > 0:08:28go. APPLAUSE

0:08:28 > 0:08:33Is it funny when you watch yourself back? You started doing so much

0:08:33 > 0:08:41comedy. Gavin and Stacey, Two Pints Of Lager, and now you are a serious

0:08:41 > 0:08:47actor.I am just grateful I'm getting to have a go at all

0:08:47 > 0:08:52different things. David doing Ratburger, I looks like an idiot.

0:08:52 > 0:08:59Then doing serious dramas. I am very lucky.Is a real mix. It has been 20

0:08:59 > 0:09:07years he had been on our screens doing amazing roles. Now doing these

0:09:07 > 0:09:11big, serious, meaty roles. Did you get your work ethic from your

0:09:11 > 0:09:16parents? You have talked about them throughout your career. They are

0:09:16 > 0:09:20real heroes. My mum and dad are a country and western duo. He used a

0:09:20 > 0:09:25gig with them and sing with them. They were grafters, working class

0:09:25 > 0:09:32families. I got my work ethic from them. That is a brilliant picture. I

0:09:32 > 0:09:37have a picture. There I am full little me.That is proper show

0:09:37 > 0:09:42business. It actually is for the lad has what it is all about. Getting up

0:09:42 > 0:09:46there and doing a turn night after night.I guess. That was my

0:09:46 > 0:09:51training. I never went to drama school. Going with them from such a

0:09:51 > 0:09:56young age but that was my training. Your dad was the motivation behind

0:09:56 > 0:10:02this new, lovely album you have. Absolutely. I had always said, it is

0:10:02 > 0:10:08weird when actors do albums. But my dad said, why can't you do it? His

0:10:08 > 0:10:12voice was ringing in my ear when they asked me this time. I do want

0:10:12 > 0:10:17to dedicate it to my pops. There is a sleeve inside with a dedication to

0:10:17 > 0:10:22him. Had he suggested some of the things? He did not know I was going

0:10:22 > 0:10:29to make it but I am sure he will be very proud.Absolutely.You lost

0:10:29 > 0:10:34your dad last year and you are doing this album now. It is a top ten

0:10:34 > 0:10:39album. He was a singer. He said, you should sing as well as actor because

0:10:39 > 0:10:52he would have twice as much chance to get work. All the tracks on the

0:10:52 > 0:10:58album, they tell the story. Where are you taking us from beginning to

0:10:58 > 0:11:03end?Tell us about the process, darling? Simon that it is all new to

0:11:03 > 0:11:11me for three get to see these lovely, amazing musicians. --It is

0:11:11 > 0:11:17all new. Each song has a different bit of my personality. There are

0:11:17 > 0:11:25some vulnerable ones.That is you singing Crazy.What is that telling

0:11:25 > 0:11:34you? It is telling me I had a bit of a meltdown. That is the first track.

0:11:34 > 0:11:43You were in Funny Gal and I thought you were great. When your dad passes

0:11:43 > 0:11:48you cannot take time of a show. Everyone goes through grief. I am

0:11:48 > 0:11:54happy that I am back and I hope he likes this album. You will be

0:11:54 > 0:11:57singing at the end of the show was that we have been hamming it all

0:11:57 > 0:12:12day. Really badly at singing, you do not want to hear that.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16When it comes to women's clothing, I find it difficult to get the right

0:12:16 > 0:12:25fit. In the tights I am wearing now I am a size eight.

0:12:25 > 0:12:32I think Ruth can help. Our clothes sizing system can be deeply

0:12:32 > 0:12:36frustrating. It is particularly bad in women's fashion. A dress size

0:12:36 > 0:12:40that fits you perfectly well in one shop can be really quite wide of the

0:12:40 > 0:12:46mark in another. It was not always meant to be like this. 60 years ago,

0:12:46 > 0:12:51the first, large scale survey of British women's do sizes tried to

0:12:51 > 0:12:58overhaul the dress size system of getting the measure of 5000 women.I

0:12:58 > 0:13:03find the clothes are too big in the hip and the bust.It was the

0:13:03 > 0:13:11brainchild of Philip kewn it. What would it be like in the late 40s,

0:13:11 > 0:13:17early 50s, as a customer? It was going into the high street shops at

0:13:17 > 0:13:23that time. Everyone had their own codes for sizing.I have a couple of

0:13:23 > 0:13:30old things here. There is a label on it.To fit, OS. 95 to 105

0:13:30 > 0:13:38centimetres.These are both about the same size. There are three

0:13:38 > 0:13:42different sizes for two garments that are both the same size.He was

0:13:42 > 0:13:49convinced we needed a simple set of standard sizes to fit real women. He

0:13:49 > 0:13:53needed to find out what thousands of the measured and he could not do it

0:13:53 > 0:14:00alone. June McAfee was one of the measure is. Her daughter still has

0:14:00 > 0:14:09the scrapbooks. This is your mum, this lady. She would start as a

0:14:09 > 0:14:15machinist and work her way up.Your mother would have been measuring all

0:14:15 > 0:14:23these various measurements. Bust, Ark, anterior. So the call to front

0:14:23 > 0:14:35waste. So much more of an involved process than I had ever expected. He

0:14:35 > 0:14:38gathered 200,000 individual measurements. He hired models to

0:14:38 > 0:14:45represent the average body shapes he recovered. Mrs Short, Mrs average,

0:14:45 > 0:14:54Mrs medium, and Ms Wall, modelled by June herself. This is your mother?

0:14:54 > 0:15:04Yes, Miss Tool was my mum. This system is simplified to just a

0:15:04 > 0:15:08handful of standard sizes. They were named after a string of arbitrary

0:15:08 > 0:15:15numbers. The ones we know today. So, why? Despite the ground-breaking

0:15:15 > 0:15:20research, why is British sizing is still so indifferent. An extremely

0:15:20 > 0:15:25good question. It is a guideline and not the law. Retailers were quite

0:15:25 > 0:15:30content with making a living as they were going. Some of them are not

0:15:30 > 0:15:34willing to change from the old systems to the new system. The dream

0:15:34 > 0:15:40of better fishing -- fitting fashion lives on at the University of

0:15:40 > 0:15:47Manchester. It is believed we need to move more to bespoke clothing

0:15:47 > 0:15:52fitted to our unique shapes. Rather than using tape measures like they

0:15:52 > 0:15:58did in 1957, what are you using now? We use a body scan it using infrared

0:15:58 > 0:16:03sensors. They project infrared light onto the body surface as a pattern.

0:16:03 > 0:16:14They are used to render the curve of the body to a virtual person.Simeon

0:16:14 > 0:16:17and his team run opens coming days so anyone can access their

0:16:17 > 0:16:22measurements and I are going to give it a go.Visually you have

0:16:22 > 0:16:25indications of posture and relationships of body parts to one

0:16:25 > 0:16:30another and all the measurements you would need to understand the sizing.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34According to his data in the 1950s I would have been a medium statue

0:16:34 > 0:16:40woman with a medium bust. Could these sizes be a thing of the past?

0:16:40 > 0:16:47And like to be in a position where we could use this technology to

0:16:47 > 0:16:48bodies patterns which represent specific dimensions of individuals

0:16:48 > 0:16:52submit could help the industry move towards mass customisation and

0:16:52 > 0:16:58made-to-measure.It is a way forward.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02Sheridan, are you like me and try on something in one shop...

0:17:02 > 0:17:07Two you want me to leave, this sounds like a girl thing. There can

0:17:07 > 0:17:14be one food that has lovely food and in another shop, everyone is so

0:17:14 > 0:17:23thin!My weight goes up and down like a yo-yo.You are looking

0:17:23 > 0:17:29incredibly stylish tonight. Can you talk us through this other

0:17:29 > 0:17:34contemporary look from the runway this season? This is you in

0:17:34 > 0:17:41Ratburger with David Walliams.We like that look.It is a good look.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44We saw the picture on your social media feed and are now fancy one of

0:17:44 > 0:17:54these. What's that?It is a blanket but you are a mermaid, I am such a

0:17:54 > 0:18:01child, it is ridiculous! So when you have your bottle of wine and you are

0:18:01 > 0:18:14on the sofa how do you get up and pee?You just drop it!Last time you

0:18:14 > 0:18:21came on we remember that you didn't have any tattooists.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23You told us you weren't considering getting any either

0:18:23 > 0:18:26because you were worried about a certain someone's reaction.

0:18:26 > 0:18:32I would not like that because Matt mum will kill me, she will ring me

0:18:32 > 0:18:40up straight afterwards and say, you are not getting a tad too! That was

0:18:40 > 0:18:482011.What does Amman make of your body art?I love tattoos. Now I've

0:18:48 > 0:18:57got them all over me. My mum does not know about a lot of them but she

0:18:57 > 0:19:02hates the mother passion. She went absolutely mad. My lovely make up

0:19:02 > 0:19:08artist who you saw earlier with the dogs, she covers it in seconds so we

0:19:08 > 0:19:13are fine now.Your mum is watching tonight, isn't she. What is she

0:19:13 > 0:19:21called?Marilyn.Marilyn, she has said it all.

0:19:21 > 0:19:27You've played so many different parts but what is your dream role?

0:19:27 > 0:19:31Comedy, drama, stage, screen? Who would you love to play.Dolly

0:19:31 > 0:19:42Parton.I think you've got some tough competition.Guilty.That was

0:19:42 > 0:19:53amazing. He did a brilliant Nine To Five. What is it about Dolly?I just

0:19:53 > 0:19:57love her music and I have grown up with country music so she is my

0:19:57 > 0:20:06idol. If I ever got married I would have my hen party at Dollywood.

0:20:06 > 0:20:16Great idea.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22You know that she wrote Nine To Five when she was sitting in her trailer,

0:20:22 > 0:20:33tapping her nails.Pour myself a cup of ambition...! I think shed and has

0:20:33 > 0:20:37the edge. It would be great to see you as Dolly, let's hope it happens

0:20:37 > 0:20:51-- I think that Sheridan has the edge. Sheridan will be singing the

0:20:51 > 0:20:54beautiful City Of Stars from La La Land.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57On Monday we'll finally be filling the studio with some festive cheer

0:20:57 > 0:21:00when we put up our decorations - not before time in my opinion.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03So stand by for plenty of Christmas films from around the country.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06Tonight's is different as we look at how people of other faiths -

0:21:06 > 0:21:07and none - celebrate the holiday season.

0:21:07 > 0:21:14I am Ariane. And Graham, and we are atheists. We are the Sangu family

0:21:14 > 0:21:21and we British seek.I am Kate and I at Wycombe high priestess.I'm a

0:21:21 > 0:21:28Hindu.I'm a Buddhist.And Debbie, and we are rabbis.Is a Muslim I

0:21:28 > 0:21:32look forward to Christmas, I feel it is the only opportunity we have is a

0:21:32 > 0:21:36country to breathe and think about life, a chance to meet my neighbours

0:21:36 > 0:21:40and be happy. I think it is something that transcends religions

0:21:40 > 0:21:47and for the past few years I've been invited by my local church to take

0:21:47 > 0:21:50part in the Christmas service where I have been asked to read parts of

0:21:50 > 0:21:54the old Testament. It has taken me out of my comfort zone and placed me

0:21:54 > 0:22:00into a congregation of Christians. And to be part of something that is

0:22:00 > 0:22:03really important for them has become special for me. I think it is a

0:22:03 > 0:22:10relationship that has helped us as a community.As a reformed Wood

0:22:10 > 0:22:13Christmas is a lovely time of year but it is not a religious

0:22:13 > 0:22:29celebration. -- as a reformed due. We have just done eight days of

0:22:29 > 0:22:34Hanukkah so we're pretty much partied out. When we had finished it

0:22:34 > 0:22:37and watched the Queen's Speech we could light the candles and

0:22:37 > 0:22:44celebrate.I kind of embrace it as a cultural phenomenon. It's

0:22:44 > 0:22:48traditionally celebratory time of year but that in itself can bring

0:22:48 > 0:22:55its own sense of expectation, that we should be happy. It almost

0:22:55 > 0:22:59highlights what we may feel is lacking in our life, I think it is

0:22:59 > 0:23:03good to know that others are suffering and develop compassion.

0:23:03 > 0:23:07Just because they are not Christian does not mean they cannot celebrate

0:23:07 > 0:23:12love, togetherness and family, these things are universal.You don't need

0:23:12 > 0:23:18to go to church pray to do that. Ariane started buying Christmas

0:23:18 > 0:23:23decorations in September! Calendars and sparkly things.I even like

0:23:23 > 0:23:28Christmas carols, I started working on the music, the other day, didn't

0:23:28 > 0:23:34yes!The Christmas tree was a tradition when I was a child in

0:23:34 > 0:23:41India growing up, we have put up the tree on Christmas eve and then it

0:23:41 > 0:23:45will be Santa Claus time. I love cooking the traditional dinner but

0:23:45 > 0:23:53with a bit of a twist and that twist is with those of spices. Christmas

0:23:53 > 0:23:57has become too commercialised in my opinion. It has to be brought back

0:23:57 > 0:24:00to its spiritual roots of being loving, kind and humble to each

0:24:00 > 0:24:14other.As Wiccans we celebrate you look, before Christmas. It heralds

0:24:14 > 0:24:23the onset of spring, and many of the traditions of Yule celebrate

0:24:23 > 0:24:26Christmas, we have the Yule on the fire and the chocolate log on the

0:24:26 > 0:24:31table. Whereas for Christians Christmas is the celebration of the

0:24:31 > 0:24:36birth of the son of God. Wiccans and pagans celebrate the birth of the

0:24:36 > 0:24:42Sun which brings light and warmth and fire to the land.As a British

0:24:42 > 0:24:47seek family the way we view Christmas is not necessarily on a

0:24:47 > 0:24:52spiritual or religious level but more of a cultural one. With the

0:24:52 > 0:24:55kids Christmas begins with the day they open the first door on the

0:24:55 > 0:24:59Advent calendar on December the 1st. My favourite thing at Christmas when

0:24:59 > 0:25:06I open my presence.Giving and sharing.When not only have advent

0:25:06 > 0:25:10calendars, we put up a Christmas tree and decorations so they are

0:25:10 > 0:25:22very excited.Yuletide blessings to all.Have a happy atheist Christmas.

0:25:22 > 0:25:37Merry Christmas. Have a very peaceful Christmas.Merry Christmas!
