:00:15. > :00:18.Hello and welcome to The One Show with Alex Jones. And Matt Baker.

:00:19. > :00:22.Our guest tonight is a messiah of pop music who has duetted with some

:00:23. > :00:26.of the best in the business, from Robbie Williams to Enrique Iglesias

:00:27. > :00:48.But it was a recent colloboration that saw her realise her potential

:00:49. > :01:08.Great to see you, so that was you on the Italian version of The Voice

:01:09. > :01:18.with Sister Cristina. Lots of people would probably assume she was the

:01:19. > :01:22.real deal? She is the real deal, and of the four finalists left, the

:01:23. > :01:31.other ladies were foxy but she was the most sprightly. It looked really

:01:32. > :01:37.good fun. I actually got her to do this move. It is very infectious

:01:38. > :01:54.because everybody here was doing it too. Now Conchita Wurst's win must

:01:55. > :02:04.have surprised quite a few people. Online there is an interesting

:02:05. > :02:11.comment, her real name is Thomas and she really achieved a celebration of

:02:12. > :02:15.diversity. Eurovision should be about surprises anyway but they

:02:16. > :02:22.didn't see that one coming. The biggest surprise is that maps

:02:23. > :02:31.downloaded the whole Eurovision album. A compilation? It was ?9 and

:02:32. > :02:47.37 songs. There is a lot on there that I like. Since she won, a lot of

:02:48. > :02:58.people have been channelling her luck. Here is Nigella. Separated at

:02:59. > :03:20.birth! This is what Kylie might look like as Conchita. Kiss me once,

:03:21. > :03:32.Conchita! Send in your pictures to the usual address and we will have a

:03:33. > :03:35.look. Now here is Gloria with some advice to anyone who wants to extend

:03:36. > :03:42.their home. You could end up paying more in

:03:43. > :03:48.council tax than you expected. The extension constitutes a separate

:03:49. > :03:53.dwelling, and instead of getting one council tax bill, you get two. In

:03:54. > :03:59.December 2011, Martin and Kieron bought this house with an extension

:04:00. > :04:04.that have been added to six years earlier but after they moved in

:04:05. > :04:08.there got a letter from an organisation saying that our council

:04:09. > :04:12.tax purposes, the extension would now be classed as a separate

:04:13. > :04:19.dwelling. We just couldn't believe it when that letter came. It has its

:04:20. > :04:24.own separate bedroom with ensuite facilities and they classified the

:04:25. > :04:30.utility space as a kitchen and we could plug in a microwave there so

:04:31. > :04:33.we had cooking facilities. The extension was classed as a separate

:04:34. > :04:38.Band-Aid property so that as well as having to pay on average ?150 per

:04:39. > :04:44.month for the last three years, they have had an extra ?2000 in total to

:04:45. > :04:49.pay for their extension. Nobody else lives with them and they use the

:04:50. > :04:57.extension only as a utility room and a guest bedroom. Their argument for

:04:58. > :05:02.that was that there is potential use for the area. Martin and Kieron have

:05:03. > :05:07.had to go to great lengths to convince the authority that their

:05:08. > :05:17.home is only one dwelling. We have taken out the sink, taken out the

:05:18. > :05:27.power points, and now they have classed it as one property but they

:05:28. > :05:33.have raised the band of the Council tax. They will now have to pay an

:05:34. > :05:39.extra ?350 per year after their band increase. The valuation office

:05:40. > :05:43.agency steps in whenever a property is sold, and decides whether its

:05:44. > :05:49.council tax status should be changed. It is estimated by the

:05:50. > :05:54.government that there are over 24,000 annexes and extensions in

:05:55. > :05:58.England alone so this double council taxation could affect a lot of

:05:59. > :06:03.people. Sue and Paul decided to build an extension when Sue's mother

:06:04. > :06:08.moved in with them five years ago but when they put their house on the

:06:09. > :06:12.market the same thing happened. Along came an extra council tax

:06:13. > :06:15.bill. When you are getting permission to

:06:16. > :06:20.add on what you have, did anybody say to you that you are opening

:06:21. > :06:28.yourselves up to have two council tax bills? No, we weren't informed

:06:29. > :06:33.at all. All of the correspondence we had, nothing was ever mentioned with

:06:34. > :06:40.regards to two separate banding is on this property. Did you ever

:06:41. > :06:44.raised the issue yourself? No, we never thought it was relevant

:06:45. > :06:49.because we treat it as one family home. There seems to be a lack of

:06:50. > :06:53.communication between the various departments of the council and

:06:54. > :06:58.homeowners. Planning expert Ian has come to shed some light on it. If

:06:59. > :07:02.you are just building an extension with an extra bedroom, that's

:07:03. > :07:08.unlikely to be classed as a true annex. If you put in extra bathrooms

:07:09. > :07:13.and kitchens, you move towards that being self-contained and the agency

:07:14. > :07:17.will get interested. What most councils provide now is

:07:18. > :07:22.pre-application advice. I'm not sure many councils at the meeting will

:07:23. > :07:26.flag up the issue of council tax. Every local authority have their

:07:27. > :07:32.policies and really it just needs to be a sentence in there for the

:07:33. > :07:37.potential of liability. So many council tax bills, so many

:07:38. > :07:42.questions. I have come to Sue and Paul's local authority to get some

:07:43. > :07:48.answers. This is the leader of Herefordshire county council. The

:07:49. > :07:53.main complaint seems to be that nobody told us, so surely there must

:07:54. > :07:57.be responsibility somewhere in the planning? There is no formal

:07:58. > :08:01.requirement to provide such notification but the point you raise

:08:02. > :08:05.is a good one and whilst it has not been done in the past, we would be

:08:06. > :08:11.happy to make sure that anybody in the future who applies for in annex

:08:12. > :08:15.onto their house, we will draw attention to the fact that the

:08:16. > :08:20.application could bring with it an additional council tax liability. So

:08:21. > :08:29.you are giving us the assurance it could happen in the future. Here in

:08:30. > :08:33.Herefordshire it will happen. A real result for the One Show. Literally

:08:34. > :08:37.it turned around on the day of filming. As you gathered, people

:08:38. > :08:43.don't get the warning upfront so when you apply for your extension,

:08:44. > :08:49.they don't say to you, listen, be careful because this could create

:08:50. > :08:54.two council tax bills. If you are buying a house, as those two chaps

:08:55. > :09:01.did, you must make sure your solicitor does a search upfront to

:09:02. > :09:06.make sure you know whether the house will attract two bills. If you are

:09:07. > :09:11.building an extension, you may have seen two doors but they argue the

:09:12. > :09:17.second door was already there. On the other hand they did not know

:09:18. > :09:20.about exemptions for their mother or about the 50% reduction because the

:09:21. > :09:28.government is now of course encouraging people to put on an

:09:29. > :09:32.extension to help young people, not just elderly people, to help young

:09:33. > :09:40.people because they cannot get on the property ladder. If you're

:09:41. > :09:47.elderly parent is over 65, thank goodness you are not, then they are

:09:48. > :09:51.exempt. This is a quirk in the law, providing the grandma or grandad is

:09:52. > :09:56.living in the annex and not the original house. This is a little

:09:57. > :10:01.quirk, but who is going to check that night where grandma is

:10:02. > :10:13.sleeping? And you are on the hunt for some more stories for Rip Off

:10:14. > :10:21.Britain? Yes, food, clothes, everything. The address is at the

:10:22. > :10:26.bottom. You are sorting everybody out. Kylie, I know you were watching

:10:27. > :10:31.that film closely but I hope this housing issue won't be a problem for

:10:32. > :10:45.you in Australia. Listen to this voice, do you recognise it? It is

:10:46. > :10:51.Daniel here, hey mum! I know where you are going with this. I don't

:10:52. > :11:00.recognise it! The characters of Scott and Charlene from Neighbours

:11:01. > :11:06.have been living happily ever after off-screen. We couldn't look more

:11:07. > :11:11.awkward! Now they have a son who appears on our screens for the first

:11:12. > :11:19.time tomorrow on Channel five, and we have this message for you. Hey

:11:20. > :11:23.Mum, it is Daniel here, your son, in case you didn't recognise me. I

:11:24. > :11:28.haven't heard from you for ages and somebody told me you have been busy

:11:29. > :11:32.on The Voice and releasing a new album. You never told me that. Give

:11:33. > :11:47.me a call, that would be great because I really miss you. That is

:11:48. > :11:52.brilliant. He is very handsome! That is so brilliant. I don't really

:11:53. > :11:58.follow the show, maybe I am going to get back into it now and keep an eye

:11:59. > :12:03.on my song. That was just brilliant. Have you ever seen him before? I

:12:04. > :12:15.have seen a picture but that is the first time. You need to be more

:12:16. > :12:20.hands-on as a mother, Kylie. He should be more like 12 years of age.

:12:21. > :12:26.She did Skip Ramsay Street quite young, I have to say. The family is

:12:27. > :12:31.still together. A group of people are trying to prevent a mountain in

:12:32. > :12:34.the Lake District being sold to an outsider and they are appealing for

:12:35. > :12:40.donations from across the country. It could cost them ?2 million so

:12:41. > :12:45.they have an uphill task ahead of them.

:12:46. > :12:49.In this small parish hall, there is an important meeting not concerning

:12:50. > :12:56.schools, roads or public services, but about something the locals have

:12:57. > :13:03.a passion for. A mountain. This mountain rises to just under 2850

:13:04. > :13:05.feet high. Commonly known as Saddleback, this mountain is up for

:13:06. > :13:20.sale. The estate agents describe Saddleback, this mountain is up for

:13:21. > :13:24.sale. The estate agents it as a unique investment opportunity. They

:13:25. > :13:39.would, wouldn't they? But why is it for sale? Well, the owner, the Earl

:13:40. > :13:51.of Lonsdale, has to pay a huge inheritance tax bill. Consequently,

:13:52. > :13:57.yours for ?1.75 million, and me and Buster now have to climb it. A year

:13:58. > :14:00.ago, " made a flippant comment on social media saying everybody should

:14:01. > :14:09.put ?10 into the ports to buy the mountain. It has now led to a public

:14:10. > :14:15.campaign. People have contacted saying, we want to give you ?3000,

:14:16. > :14:20.we want to give you our pension. Is this just local people? It is

:14:21. > :14:27.attracting people from all over the country, Germany, New Zealand,

:14:28. > :14:33.France. People are talking with their feet. This time last week it

:14:34. > :14:41.didn't exist. What are the supporters think? It is brilliant.

:14:42. > :14:45.Even in the snow? Any weather going. Today it has been snowing! I think

:14:46. > :14:54.it is important to keep the mountain like this for the future. I am

:14:55. > :14:59.pushing for the summit. This area is protected for people to roam on it

:15:00. > :15:05.by the countryside and rights of way actor so doesn't really matter buys

:15:06. > :15:14.it? I met Richard from the National Park authority. It is true to say

:15:15. > :15:18.the mountain is secured by whoever buyers it, but it would be good if

:15:19. > :15:23.there was a group that had the long-term interest and conservation

:15:24. > :15:28.access to this mountain at heart, and this group as do that. As I

:15:29. > :15:33.struggle on, down below, Debbie is finding it easier to galvanise her

:15:34. > :15:38.supporters. I have asked for a meeting with the state and the

:15:39. > :15:43.trustees, because they have it within their gift to make us the

:15:44. > :15:47.preferred bidder. When you have gone through a certain pain barrier and

:15:48. > :15:56.beyond a certain elevation, you begin to see the attraction of it.

:15:57. > :16:00.It is this. Are you here because you would like to see the possibility of

:16:01. > :16:06.this coming to public ownership? Raise your hand if that is the case.

:16:07. > :16:12.Thank you. Two hours later, Buster and I have just past the halfway

:16:13. > :16:16.point, in a biblical downpour. Luckily for Debbie, the weather has

:16:17. > :16:20.not put a dampener on the meeting. It went really well. People

:16:21. > :16:25.appreciated Debbie's hard work and it looks as if things have moved

:16:26. > :16:29.forward. I don't earn a lot of money, but it is something I

:16:30. > :16:34.passionately believe in. It is not about buying it with something to

:16:35. > :16:38.get back from it. The views give the reward. It is beautiful. Whether

:16:39. > :16:41.Debbie and the group managed to raise the funds for the deadline of

:16:42. > :16:47.the 2nd of July remains to be seen. But one thing we can be certain

:16:48. > :16:51.about, and that is that this mountain and its spectacular views

:16:52. > :17:00.are, despite the price tag, priceless. Even on an afternoon like

:17:01. > :17:06.this. Come on, Buster. You are a soggy doggie!

:17:07. > :17:10.Sadly, the weather was too bad for Andy to get to the top. But it

:17:11. > :17:14.proves that you get a lot of weather for your money, if nothing else.

:17:15. > :17:19.Ever thought about buying a mountain? It has not crossed my

:17:20. > :17:23.mind. What would you do at the top of a mountain. Let's talk about your

:17:24. > :17:28.new single. It is called title-macro. And there is a

:17:29. > :17:37.brilliant story in the song. Tell us what happened? -- it is called I Was

:17:38. > :17:43.Gonna Cancel. I had two days in the studio with Pharrell. On the second

:17:44. > :17:49.day, I was having a bad day. And in the car on the way, the voice in my

:17:50. > :17:54.head was just saying, keep it together, you are fine. You can fall

:17:55. > :18:03.to pieces at the end of the day. But the first person what I saw one I

:18:04. > :18:11.got to the studio was Pharrell. He asked how I was, and I burst into

:18:12. > :18:14.tears. I sat on one of the steps in the courtyard and he was on his

:18:15. > :18:19.haunches, talking me through. Anyway, out of a really embarrassing

:18:20. > :18:26.moment, he wrote the most positive song on my album, because I was

:18:27. > :18:35.going to cancel. Let's have a listen.

:18:36. > :18:41.I was gonna cancel, but then you reminded me of who I am.

:18:42. > :19:06.# Everything is clearer than a mirror.

:19:07. > :19:17.What is that move called? Who knows? You have got the classic Kylie

:19:18. > :19:21.sound, and also the new Kylie. It is funny. Pharrell is Mr cool, but it

:19:22. > :19:27.is one of the most poppy songs on the album. Even our parents now know

:19:28. > :19:31.who Pharrell is. Everything he touches turns to gold and extends

:19:32. > :19:37.across lots of genres. What is he like to work with? He was very

:19:38. > :19:41.cool, while dealing with an emotional woman in the studio.

:19:42. > :19:46.Probably not the first time he has done that, but he was really cool

:19:47. > :19:50.and created the song there and then. It was wrapped up in a day. He was

:19:51. > :19:56.on his synthesiser, creating the sounds and putting it together.

:19:57. > :20:01.Wrote it, I sang it, done. You are so good at reinventing your sound.

:20:02. > :20:06.So do you know when that is right? There are times when you don't want

:20:07. > :20:12.to jinx it, but there are times when you definitely have a feeling.

:20:13. > :20:15.Although I did not have distance on that day in the studio, I still felt

:20:16. > :20:22.incredibly embarrassed about falling to pieces. But I did think the song

:20:23. > :20:26.sounded good. And there is good and bad news. Good news, you are going

:20:27. > :20:32.on tour with your new album. At the bad news is that we lose you from

:20:33. > :20:38.The Voice. We have also heard rumours that will.i.am is off. Can

:20:39. > :20:44.you confirm or deny? I don't know. I have no idea. I thought he wanted to

:20:45. > :20:50.come back. He heard that song, I Was Gonna Cancel, and changed his mind.

:20:51. > :20:56.Quickly, Kylie - The Musical. We hear rumours about that. One day, it

:20:57. > :21:01.is going to happen. It takes a long time. It is about getting the book

:21:02. > :21:04.right. And the longer it takes, the more songs I have to go in the

:21:05. > :21:09.musical, so maybe it is not about thing. Is it the story of your

:21:10. > :21:17.life, or is it a story using your songs? We are just deciding which

:21:18. > :21:20.way to go. A story of my life seems strange to me, but we could do that,

:21:21. > :21:26.or more of a Mamma Mia thing, where your songs illustrate a good story.

:21:27. > :21:31.And you would have to cast yourself, which would be strange. Are you

:21:32. > :21:38.free? I would love to, but I would spoil it. Get a permed blonde wig. I

:21:39. > :21:42.could give it a go. Do the Eurovision next year with a

:21:43. > :21:46.beard. Anyway, last month, for the first time in history, the houses of

:21:47. > :21:50.element were used for the set of a film. Suffragette tells the tale of

:21:51. > :21:59.struggle for women get the vote, a fight that sort the tactics from

:22:00. > :22:04.move from martial arts to demonstrations. Here to tell us

:22:05. > :22:07.about it is Honor Blackman. My role as karate chopping, man

:22:08. > :22:12.throwing Cathy Gale in the avengers broke down areas of male physical

:22:13. > :22:16.supremacy over women on television. Never before had a woman being

:22:17. > :22:20.portrayed as someone who could hold her own in a fight against a man. My

:22:21. > :22:23.capers caught the eye of the producers of Goldfinger, we then had

:22:24. > :22:29.the script rewritten to include martial arts, and I even wrote a

:22:30. > :22:34.book on self-defence. Luckily, I have never had to defend myself in

:22:35. > :22:40.real life. Although, of course, I know I could if I had to. But for

:22:41. > :22:45.one group of women in history, it became an absolute necessity. In the

:22:46. > :22:49.first head of the 20th century, women were fighting for the right to

:22:50. > :22:53.vote. The suffragettes, as they became known, were growing in

:22:54. > :22:56.number. The movement decided they needed to defend themselves from the

:22:57. > :23:01.police, who they saw as an aggressive enemy. One woman was of

:23:02. > :23:06.stick in importance in this change of tactics. Her name was Edith

:23:07. > :23:12.Garratt, a teacher of the Japanese martial art, jujitsu. In 1909, Edith

:23:13. > :23:19.taught here in Golden Square, London, with her husband. So how did

:23:20. > :23:24.Edith, only for four to 11 in height, become such a key person in

:23:25. > :23:27.the fight for women's rights? Dr and Myleene Godfrey is a historian who

:23:28. > :23:33.has researched the life of Edith Garratt. In 1909, they were invited

:23:34. > :23:35.by Emmeline Pankhurst and the suffragettes to give a

:23:36. > :23:40.presentation. Everybody loved it. They said, and you become more

:23:41. > :23:46.involved with us? I can't think that I would ever have enabled to do

:23:47. > :23:50.battle with a long dress on. Black leather was more to the point.

:23:51. > :23:56.Within three years, Edith was at the heart of the suffragettes' plans to

:23:57. > :24:00.resist police authority on including training an elite group of women to

:24:01. > :24:03.guard Emmeline Pankhurst. Edith and jujitsu became synonymous with the

:24:04. > :24:09.suffragette movement. One magazine even coined the phrase jujitsu

:24:10. > :24:17.suffragettes, calling them a new terror for the London police. And on

:24:18. > :24:21.the 1st of March 19 12, suffragettes met for one of their most audacious

:24:22. > :24:24.protests yet. They were angry that shopkeepers who were supposed to be

:24:25. > :24:29.loyal to them were not supporting the cause. There would be ladies

:24:30. > :24:32.walking across the street by the shops innocently looking at the

:24:33. > :24:37.windows, and then suddenly they would whip out items such as this

:24:38. > :24:42.hammer. This is a toffee hammer, which is small. But it is weighty.

:24:43. > :24:46.They would whip it out, smash a window and ran off. The suffragettes

:24:47. > :24:52.escaped to Edith Garratt 's dodo, where she provided them with a

:24:53. > :24:56.refuge. They would put their items under the floorboards, get changed

:24:57. > :24:59.for a jujitsu lesson, and then the police would come knocking on the

:25:00. > :25:04.door and Edith would say, this is very un-chivalrous of you, to come

:25:05. > :25:09.in and interrupted ladies' jujitsu session. We are having a class, I

:25:10. > :25:14.don't know anything about it. It was unusual for a woman like me in the

:25:15. > :25:18.1960s to learn a martial art. At the beginning of the last century, it

:25:19. > :25:22.was even more so. So Blevins and Jenny Cooper are Edith Garratt's and

:25:23. > :25:28.daughters. She could be quite domineering, but then when you are a

:25:29. > :25:35.suffragette... She could be very bossy. We knew she was a

:25:36. > :25:38.suffragette. We knew these -- she threw a policeman over her shoulder,

:25:39. > :25:42.but other than that, she was just now no. Did she practice anything

:25:43. > :25:51.new? She held my hand really tight and I had to all her thumb back to

:25:52. > :25:54.get her hand of me. So how difficult was it for a woman less than five

:25:55. > :25:58.feet in height, dressed in a full-length skirt and wearing a hat,

:25:59. > :26:09.to defend herself against a burly Edwardian policeman? She was able to

:26:10. > :26:11.use the force of her opponent to throw him and demonstrate how a

:26:12. > :26:20.small person can beat a larger person. Can you imagine your grandma

:26:21. > :26:26.doing that? Edith Garratt was small in stature, but she was a big figure

:26:27. > :26:34.in the suffragette movement. And she proved that women can defend

:26:35. > :26:39.themselves just as well as any man. She is feisty. This is what Mary

:26:40. > :26:47.looks like without the period costume on. I am about to

:26:48. > :26:57.demonstrate. Ready? There he is, on the floor. Kylie, come over. Could

:26:58. > :27:01.you take anybody down? Within reason, yes. How popular is jujitsu

:27:02. > :27:06.with women? It is fantastically popular. As the suffragettes found,

:27:07. > :27:14.it is great for small women to empower themselves. It is the same

:27:15. > :27:20.today. I am as tall as Kylie, and I do OK. Brilliant for self-defence.

:27:21. > :27:26.Can I do it in high heels? Absolutely. Let's see that one more

:27:27. > :27:32.time. We did not quite get it the first time. This is the technique

:27:33. > :27:38.Edith used in an interview when she was 94. What am I doing, punching

:27:39. > :27:51.again? You are going to punch. That was quick! And he is down. Mary,

:27:52. > :27:56.thank you very much. Earlier, we asked for your photos in honour of

:27:57. > :28:00.Eurovision winner Conchita. We have been inundated. You are brilliant at

:28:01. > :28:10.home for doing this. This is Holly and Daisy, from East Grinstead. They

:28:11. > :28:19.look very glamorous. Look at Becky, with a knitted beard. Shias 11. --

:28:20. > :28:24.she is 11. And Victoria Winter, from Folkestone. A group of them,

:28:25. > :28:31.actually. It has really captured the imagination, this one. What do you

:28:32. > :28:40.think of this one? Yvonne Green from Keswick, Cumbria. And this one is

:28:41. > :28:45.amazing. Paula and her friends from Northampton. All six of them with a

:28:46. > :28:49.Conchita beard. That is it from us this evening. Huge thanks to Kylie.

:28:50. > :28:55.Her new single is out today, but thee. Pleased you didn't. Tomorrow,

:28:56. > :28:59.talk-show titan Jay Leno is our guest. See you then.
