:00:17. > :00:28.to form a new Government and I accepted. Together, we will build

:00:29. > :11:39.Denise Day has decided to put her house up for auction following the

:11:40. > :11:45.floods in December last year. She is fed up and she wants out. Who would

:11:46. > :11:50.want to live here? Not you anymore. Not me. Denise is one of a number of

:11:51. > :11:56.people in Carlisle going to the auction rooms, after money from the

:11:57. > :11:58.insurance company made it possible. Instead of existing homeowners

:11:59. > :12:02.waiting while the contract is repaired properties, they are giving

:12:03. > :12:08.them lump sums, so Denise and others like her, can choose to take the

:12:09. > :12:11.money and move on. But is selling at auction a financial risk? What price

:12:12. > :12:17.do you have to sell it for to avoid losing money? We bought it for 140

:12:18. > :12:24.53 years ago and the insurance gave us 40. You need 105 to break even?

:12:25. > :12:28.We have it on at 175 star Price. Even if you stay and do the house up

:12:29. > :12:32.we will not sell it for what we bought it for, so I just want rid.

:12:33. > :12:36.When she bought this three bed terraced Denise believed the ?38

:12:37. > :12:41.million improvements of Carlisle's flood defences in 2010 meant her

:12:42. > :12:46.home was safe. It was only a week before the Flood and I had said, it

:12:47. > :12:52.would flood, we got the barriers. We were still naively believing, even

:12:53. > :13:00.on the night I was adamant that ours would hold and it was my partner who

:13:01. > :13:06.said, we best start getting things upstairs. Everyone said the Flood is

:13:07. > :13:10.just the beginning. Dealing with the insurance, and the thought of coming

:13:11. > :13:18.back in is a nightmare. Absolutely awful. This has broke me completely.

:13:19. > :13:21.We will find out what price Denise gets for her house at auction a

:13:22. > :13:26.little later. Alison Taylor works for a charity

:13:27. > :13:32.that houses vulnerable people. They bought a house that was damaged in

:13:33. > :13:37.the floods last year. She paid just ?132,000 at auction for this five

:13:38. > :13:43.bedroom town house. That's 110,000 less than its pre-flood value.

:13:44. > :13:46.Some people would say you're crazy, Alison, for buying a house in an

:13:47. > :13:49.area which is notorious for flooding.

:13:50. > :13:52.To be honest, we would not have been able to buy a house like this

:13:53. > :13:56.anywhere else in the city and we think it is a risk worth taking.

:13:57. > :14:01.Do you not feel there is a slightly predatory element to that? That you

:14:02. > :14:04.have benefited from someone else's misfortune?

:14:05. > :14:08.Yes, in some cases I do feel that is not very nice for the people if they

:14:09. > :14:11.have lost out, but from what I'm hearing people have not lost out.

:14:12. > :14:15.The auctions of these flood damaged homes have been conducted by Colin

:14:16. > :14:20.West. Who are the winners and losers in all of

:14:21. > :14:24.I would argue that it is a win - win. The vendor has the flexibility

:14:25. > :14:27.to sell as is now in the auction combined with the sediment from the

:14:28. > :14:31.insurance company and the buyer is buying a property at a price he'd

:14:32. > :14:34.never have been able to buy it at before, do it up and hopefully

:14:35. > :14:38.prices will recover, or he does it up and rents it out but it depends

:14:39. > :14:43.on the prices achieved at auction and tomorrow it will tell. Colin

:14:44. > :14:46.also says the Flood read scheme set by the government and insurers to

:14:47. > :14:50.keep insurance affordable for those in high flood risk areas has helped

:14:51. > :14:55.encourage buyers looking to bag a bargain at auction. But it doesn't

:14:56. > :15:00.help everyone. Buy-to-lets and business properties are not

:15:01. > :15:06.eligible. It is D-Day for Denise and she needs her home to raise at least

:15:07. > :15:10.105,000 at auction to break even. Well, Denise, the auction is filling

:15:11. > :15:13.up, how do you feel? Nervous, very nervous.

:15:14. > :15:18.What about the worst-case scenario, it doesn't sell at all?

:15:19. > :15:22.We will have two refurbish it and redo everything and move back in and

:15:23. > :15:26.live with the threat of more flooding.

:15:27. > :15:30.That's the last thing you want. The last thing I want.

:15:31. > :15:33.The auction gets underway and three other flood damaged homes are sold

:15:34. > :15:37.for around 50% of the pre-flood value.

:15:38. > :15:42.Time for Denise's property. Here we go. 64, 68, 70, 75, all

:15:43. > :15:54.done. It's not great news for Denise, as

:15:55. > :15:58.her three bed is sold for the reserve price of just ?75,000.

:15:59. > :16:04.I'm really sorry for you, where does that leave you?

:16:05. > :16:07.It leaves us with a ?30,000 loss, so it leaves as renegotiating our

:16:08. > :16:12.mortgage, looking at smaller properties, but I'm still pleased we

:16:13. > :16:14.sold and we are out of the Flood area.

:16:15. > :16:17.Denise is looking to the future and has already booked into macro

:16:18. > :16:22.viewings in Carlisle, nowhere near the Flood risk zones. And for those

:16:23. > :16:26.who have taken advantage of buying cheap at the auctions, let's hope

:16:27. > :16:31.they stay dry with the storms coming knocking once again.

:16:32. > :16:35.It goes without saying we wish Denise and her family the best. Very

:16:36. > :16:43.disappointing result. Greg, man down is back on our

:16:44. > :16:48.screens shortly. At the end of the last series is golf and moved to

:16:49. > :17:06.America and Dan was living with his mother and his auntie.

:17:07. > :17:23.I've left him with his mum and his auntie and his mum has a new

:17:24. > :17:31.boyfriend, that is one of the things that is upsetting him. You think it

:17:32. > :17:41.can't get any worse. This was the first series I started to feel sorry

:17:42. > :17:49.for him. Look at this! He has a terrible life. He has a terrible

:17:50. > :17:56.time, he's just about to get attacked by a fox! There it is! It

:17:57. > :18:01.was a real fox! Do things get any better? Does he make any inroads to

:18:02. > :18:05.becoming an adult? For the first time he attempts to change so he

:18:06. > :18:08.does make decisions. As you can imagine, things get horrendously

:18:09. > :18:10.worse but at least he has a go at escaping. It moves on more this

:18:11. > :18:13.series and I'm excited about who's in it. You have got some Hollywood

:18:14. > :18:15.A-lister is. Everybody we asked, Tony Robinson we couldn't believe

:18:16. > :18:17.said yes and Steven Berkoff plays the school caretaker which is

:18:18. > :18:28.ludicrous! While we are talking about him, here he is. You been

:18:29. > :18:38.Serbia? It is a place of great pain! I can never return. It's my family.

:18:39. > :18:47.Lovely. All dead. I like you. How many years have you taken? How old

:18:48. > :19:02.am I? 45. Come on, pretty boy, how many? 65. LAUGHTER

:19:03. > :19:07.He is very good. That is not me having to act being frightened. And

:19:08. > :19:17.Mark Hamill as well! It is ridiculous. Luke Skywalker himself.

:19:18. > :19:21.That is not a still from Man Down! As the writer, you are sitting there

:19:22. > :19:27.watching these A-lister is deliver your lines, that must be quite an

:19:28. > :19:33.experience. It was really exciting. With Steven I was more worried! But

:19:34. > :19:38.so exciting because I studied Steven Berkoff when I was at university.

:19:39. > :19:45.Would you say doing, I would rather say you -- you say it like this? I

:19:46. > :19:49.said, whatever you want to do! But he was so naturally frightening! And

:19:50. > :19:56.that is based on a real caretaker at one of my schools who once pinned me

:19:57. > :20:01.in the corner and said, you think the headmaster runs this school, I

:20:02. > :20:06.run this school! And now he has Steven Berkoff playing him. Even in

:20:07. > :20:10.the local paper, they saw you and your mum going out for a meal and it

:20:11. > :20:22.made the local paper. It was the Shropshire Star. There you are.

:20:23. > :20:27.Great headline! Spotted in town. And they interviewed the waitress. I had

:20:28. > :20:31.forgotten about that but they did, they are lovely people at the

:20:32. > :20:35.Shropshire Star and they are always good are very kind to me but there

:20:36. > :20:38.was a great quote from the waitress, he seemed nice, he had pasta! Both

:20:39. > :20:48.are true. Man Down is on tonight

:20:49. > :20:50.at 10pm on Channel 4. Later tonight on BBC One there's

:20:51. > :20:53.a new series called Saving Lives at Sea looking at the work

:20:54. > :20:55.of the RNLI volunteers and the extreme situations

:20:56. > :20:57.they find themselves in. Here's a crew from Blackpool who get

:20:58. > :21:37.into trouble themselves whilst Helmsman Darren has not resurfaced.

:21:38. > :21:41.But in danger of being knocked unconscious by the upturned boat,

:21:42. > :21:49.there is little that crewmates Simon and Kyle can do to help him.

:21:50. > :21:57.Thankfully, Darren, who was under the boat, and the prison if he is

:21:58. > :22:01.here. APPLAUSE What was that like? How long were

:22:02. > :22:07.you underfoot? About one minute and ten seconds. And did you lose

:22:08. > :22:12.consciousness? Not at all. You could see the red flare being set of and

:22:13. > :22:18.Shaun who is alongside Elissa and Lindi, Shaun, you saw the flare but

:22:19. > :22:24.it is very rare for crew members to tip them off. Extremely rare, I had

:22:25. > :22:28.been a light but man for 20 years and a volunteer helmsman for nearly

:22:29. > :22:38.15 and I have never seen a flare fired by an actual crew. -- lifeboat

:22:39. > :22:42.man. Were you close by? We were searching just north of where Darren

:22:43. > :22:47.capsized and we had to go and rescue them so it was quite daunting. And

:22:48. > :22:54.it was a false alarm? Unfortunately, yes. Elissa, what spurred you on,

:22:55. > :23:00.you are in Abersoch, what spurred you do volunteer? I came from a

:23:01. > :23:04.sailing family and at 18 I decided I wanted to do something I could not

:23:05. > :23:10.afford to donate so what is more valuable than your time? Are there

:23:11. > :23:13.many females signed up? Not at my station, I am the only one but there

:23:14. > :23:20.are others with loads, Aberystwyth have a full female crew and in

:23:21. > :23:26.others it is more common. What is your day job? I am an employment

:23:27. > :23:32.list. I'm a train driver. What happened if the call comes and you

:23:33. > :23:36.are working? We work on a roster system at the station so people

:23:37. > :23:43.cover for when I'm at work. We have a a pretty big team. Lindi, we

:23:44. > :23:47.mentioned that you were rescued. We have some footage filmed by the crew

:23:48. > :23:54.of your rescue. What happened in Blackpool? I'm not quite sure how I

:23:55. > :24:00.ended up in the water, I was in a bad place at that time in my life

:24:01. > :24:04.and in my mind. I just went into the water and felt comfortable in that

:24:05. > :24:10.and I didn't want to get out. The crew came and they rescued me and

:24:11. > :24:15.they told me to get in the boat. I didn't want to but they took me to

:24:16. > :24:18.shore. I get it hard to put into words but what would you like to say

:24:19. > :24:24.to these people who put their lives on the line to rescue yours? I'm

:24:25. > :24:28.really grateful and thank you. I didn't realise they were volunteers

:24:29. > :24:34.and they had other jobs as well. They are risking their lives every

:24:35. > :24:39.day to save total strangers so I'm really grateful. To put it into

:24:40. > :24:44.perspective last year the RNLI rescued 8000 people, saving 348

:24:45. > :24:52.lives and in the last 48 hours there have been called in Cleethorpes,

:24:53. > :24:58.Brighton, Enniskillen, just a few and there are a lot more. If it what

:24:59. > :25:07.you had an incident, Greg? Did you get rescued? Not by the RNLI. I got

:25:08. > :25:11.in trouble when I was boogie boarding in Cornwall and an

:25:12. > :25:15.Australian lifeguard came out on a canoe. I was clinging on to a cliff

:25:16. > :25:21.and I thought he was going to rescue me and he just went, stop messing

:25:22. > :25:30.around! He left me! I wish you guys had been there! Elissa, you met your

:25:31. > :25:37.fiance by joining. Is he here? Yes, he is in the audience. Where is he?

:25:38. > :25:43.This is Fritz. We understand there is some kind of assessment process

:25:44. > :25:49.going on and he is your instructor. He is the senior helm on station so

:25:50. > :25:53.he is technically involved. Is he tough on you? He is a nightmare, he

:25:54. > :26:02.is so horrible! Why are you horrible? I'm not really. You are

:26:03. > :26:06.getting married in September? Yes. And it can take over your whole

:26:07. > :26:10.life, I guess that is the point for the people employing you, they have

:26:11. > :26:16.to understand that for you and everybody here, it takes over your

:26:17. > :26:21.life. It does. You ask my wife, she will tell you I'm at the boathouse

:26:22. > :26:25.more than at home or if not, at work. You have to have an

:26:26. > :26:29.understanding family, the kids know that you could drop everything leave

:26:30. > :26:34.at the dinner table, the Nativity, shopping, that's a good one! And it

:26:35. > :26:41.happened last Sunday? I had been out on the boat to welcome a new boat at

:26:42. > :26:46.the flanking stations, I was about an hour late, I walked in, we were

:26:47. > :26:49.going for lunch, we sat down in the restaurant and the pager went off so

:26:50. > :26:56.we didn't eat for another hour and a half. But she understands, she gets

:26:57. > :27:02.used to it after 20 years! And you are doing a fantastic thing by

:27:03. > :27:05.volunteering. And Fiona, later this summer, you are doing some voting?

:27:06. > :27:12.Not in the same category obviously! I'm hoping to get my daytime skipper

:27:13. > :27:17.license so you can sail in daylight hours. I started trying to learn the

:27:18. > :27:21.navigational charts yesterday and nearly had a nervous breakdown! But

:27:22. > :27:25.I want to say, we are so grateful for all that you do. We love our

:27:26. > :27:30.coastline and going out and enjoying the seat and knowing that you guys

:27:31. > :27:35.do what you do and that you choose to do it, we are hugely grateful --

:27:36. > :27:40.enjoy the seaside. And to get there so quickly, to risk everything, you

:27:41. > :27:46.must get an enormous amount out of it when you do the rescues. We do.

:27:47. > :27:51.There is no a greater buzz than knowing you are helping someone the.

:27:52. > :27:55.It is a great feeling knowing you have rescued someone. Thank you all

:27:56. > :28:00.for everything you do. APPLAUSE Saving Lives at Sea is on tonight

:28:01. > :28:04.at 9pm on BBC One and for more information on the BBC's

:28:05. > :28:05.volunteering season, Do Something Great, head

:28:06. > :28:07.to our website for more information. Man Down is on tonight at 10pm

:28:08. > :28:14.on Channel 4 and Fake or Fortune starts this Sunday at 8pm

:28:15. > :28:17.on BBC One. Andrew Marr will be joining us

:28:18. > :28:20.tomorrow but playing us out tonight it's Clean Bandit featuring

:28:21. > :28:26.Louisa Johnson with Tears. # I tried hard to make you want me

:28:27. > :28:33.but we're not supposed to be # And the truth will always haunt me

:28:34. > :28:38.even though it set me free # And my tears flow like the ocean

:28:39. > :28:45.as they floated in the breeze # They were falling in slow motion

:28:46. > :28:53.and they brought me to my knees # You're haunting me,

:28:54. > :28:55.taunting me, all in my brain # Turned out the light

:28:56. > :28:58.and now all that remains # Fills me with doubt and I'm

:28:59. > :29:01.shouting your name out loud # Why do you wanna put

:29:02. > :29:03.me through the pain # I get the feeling

:29:04. > :29:05.I'll never escape # I can't hide away from the shame

:29:06. > :29:08.of you # Ooh tears on the ground,

:29:09. > :29:12.tears on my pillow # You won't bring me down

:29:13. > :29:17.and I'll get over you # And in time I know you'll leave me

:29:18. > :29:47.like a distant memory # I know love can be so easy

:29:48. > :29:52.if I start by loving me # Why do you wanna put

:29:53. > :29:54.me through the pain? # I get the feeling

:29:55. > :29:56.I'll never escape # I can't hide away from the shame

:29:57. > :29:59.of you # Ooh tears on the ground

:30:00. > :30:08.rain in my window # Ooh tears on the ground

:30:09. > :30:44.rain in my window # The pain washes out

:30:45. > :31:10.and I'll get over you The next minute,

:31:11. > :31:12.you're a lifeboat crew member.
