0:00:18 > 0:00:23Hello and welcome to The One Show with Michael 'The Wizard' Ball.

0:00:23 > 0:00:27And Alex Jones.

0:00:27 > 0:00:33What are you doing?I am having a bit of fun whether Facebook built

0:00:33 > 0:00:42up. I am supposed to be finding one for our guest tonight. It is a beard

0:00:42 > 0:00:55of balls. Can you say that?Anymore? Oh, what is this one? That is cool.

0:00:55 > 0:01:04What are you looking for? This one. She has been one of the best dramas

0:01:04 > 0:01:15of recent times. I have got it. Peaky Blinders.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18Right here we go.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21I'm Tommy Shelby and by order of the Peaky Blinders please

0:01:21 > 0:01:22welcome, my Aunt Polly...

0:01:22 > 0:01:24Helen McCrory!

0:01:24 > 0:01:28Welcome to the show Helen.

0:01:28 > 0:01:38That is the real thing. It is a proper app.Great. Peaky Blinders,

0:01:38 > 0:01:42obviously a cultural phenomenon. Known for the fantastic sets. We

0:01:42 > 0:01:47have spent a fortune and we have dressed our set to completely echo

0:01:47 > 0:01:55yours, is a bit of a tribute.The BBC could save money and take a leaf

0:01:55 > 0:01:56out of your book.

0:01:56 > 0:02:03That is the worrying bit. Series four. Last time we talked you are

0:02:03 > 0:02:08talking about Series III. I am obsessed with the programme. You are

0:02:08 > 0:02:17here to talk about series four. Congratulations, you got an OBE! 's

0:02:17 > 0:02:27eye-macro I do. That is fantastic. --I did. It is thrilling that you

0:02:27 > 0:02:33get it from the big cheese. She said, she smiled and she said, what

0:02:33 > 0:02:40are you in at the moment? I said, it is for nothing, for General

0:02:40 > 0:02:44services, shouting in the dark. She said, I know exactly who you are and

0:02:44 > 0:02:49this is very well deserved. The last time we met was at Windsor Castle

0:02:49 > 0:02:56when we were handing you a Bafta. She said, we do like to reciprocate.

0:02:56 > 0:03:03You nearly missed the invite.I thought it was a parking ticket,

0:03:03 > 0:03:08another thing that Damien had not paid. I threw it onto his desk and

0:03:08 > 0:03:12shut the door. I got a phone call saying, are you going to accept it

0:03:12 > 0:03:20or not? You have been offered an OBE. I practically saluted on the

0:03:20 > 0:03:25phone.Very well deserved. We will be talking more about Peaky Blinders

0:03:25 > 0:03:28and sharing an exclusive clip later.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30We'll also be talking to Team Rickshaw,

0:03:30 > 0:03:33who, it's fair to say, have had a bit of a tough day!

0:03:33 > 0:03:35They're on route to Penrith in Cumbria.

0:03:35 > 0:03:41Let's see how they have been getting on.

0:03:41 > 0:03:48Come on, Ben. Push on. 11 miles to go. Let me tell you, Team Rickshaw

0:03:48 > 0:03:53today have put in a massive day. We have been on the highest road in the

0:03:53 > 0:03:58lake district and dealt with the toughest stuff this place can throw.

0:03:58 > 0:04:05Join as soon when hopefully we will be in Penrith. They are beside

0:04:05 > 0:04:12themselves. It is all cold and dark. We will catch up with them later on.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15It's recently been reported that NHS maternity units have been turning

0:04:15 > 0:04:17to expensive temporary staffing arrangements, to plug a nationwide

0:04:17 > 0:04:19shortage of midwives.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22Now The Royal College of Nursing is calling for what SOME view

0:04:22 > 0:04:24as an even more controversial solution - men!

0:04:24 > 0:04:30Here's Kevin.

0:04:30 > 0:04:36Whittington Hospital in North London. Good afternoon.Can I help

0:04:36 > 0:04:43you? Angel Martin is getting ready for another hectic shift. They have

0:04:43 > 0:04:47three deliveries in less than five hours and the midwives are very

0:04:47 > 0:04:52busy.He is one of the latest recruits to the hospital's busy

0:04:52 > 0:04:57maternity wards. I am one of the midwives. Angel qualified as a

0:04:57 > 0:05:04midwife in March of this year. This is his first week in the hospital's

0:05:04 > 0:05:09birth centre. What drew him to this traditionally female profession?A

0:05:09 > 0:05:17few years ago I was doing my training in nursing. I saw one

0:05:17 > 0:05:22delivery and I loved it. I almost cried when I saw the beautiful baby

0:05:22 > 0:05:26crying.Angel has made his career move at a time when the Royal

0:05:26 > 0:05:30College of midwives warns there are not enough recruits going into the

0:05:30 > 0:05:35profession. Male midwives make up 0.4% of those practising in England.

0:05:35 > 0:05:41What challenges do you think you face as a male midwives? When you go

0:05:41 > 0:05:48into the room it is a surprise for everybody. Yes, when they see you

0:05:48 > 0:05:54are a soft person, you speak calmly and you're a professional...That is

0:05:54 > 0:06:01what they want. With 3500 midwives needed to make the staffing

0:06:01 > 0:06:06shortfall in England alone, could tapping male attention will be the

0:06:06 > 0:06:09solution to the crisis? While Angel does his rounds I catch up with of

0:06:09 > 0:06:16his colleagues. My daughter is studying midwifery and there is not

0:06:16 > 0:06:23a male on her course. We always seem to have one, one out of 85 of us or

0:06:23 > 0:06:30something.Why do we think that is? A lot of people think midwife means

0:06:30 > 0:06:38a woman.Actually it means with women. It was not that long ago it

0:06:38 > 0:06:43was not legally allowed for men to be midwives. It takes almost

0:06:43 > 0:06:48generations to get it embedded this could be something you could do.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52When people realise it does not matter if you are a man or a woman,

0:06:52 > 0:06:55that has to be good. There are people out there who would be

0:06:55 > 0:07:01grateful to be just have to catch them. So, what do these mums and

0:07:01 > 0:07:06dads to be think?I think the midwives as being mumsy.I think I

0:07:06 > 0:07:14would be more comfortable if the midwife was a female. It is quite

0:07:14 > 0:07:17personal, isn't it?It could be strange. There are quite a few

0:07:17 > 0:07:24intimate moments, female privacy. But it is nothing I'm not used to

0:07:24 > 0:07:28with doctors.I think when you are in the middle of the labour, you're

0:07:28 > 0:07:35not going to care, are you?Well done, well done, well done.Back at

0:07:35 > 0:07:38the Whittington midwifery students are taking part in training. We do

0:07:38 > 0:07:47this regularly with the students. This man worked full-time as a

0:07:47 > 0:07:50midwife for 11 years before becoming a midwifery lecturer earlier this

0:07:50 > 0:07:56year. I have never met a male midwife before today and I have met

0:07:56 > 0:08:01two.My personal feeling, as a man, it sounds very feminine. It sounds

0:08:01 > 0:08:09like it is for women only. You went through this college when I said I

0:08:09 > 0:08:14wanted to be a midwife or stop some midwives would say, when we come in,

0:08:14 > 0:08:20we realise it is not really just for women. It is a family business. Are

0:08:20 > 0:08:26there any mail midwives on your course? No. There are not. Would you

0:08:26 > 0:08:32have been surprised if there would have been? Not surprised. I think it

0:08:32 > 0:08:40would have been encouraged. They are just about to qualify. To have any

0:08:40 > 0:08:44advice?Some days are highly stressed but do not worry. You will

0:08:44 > 0:08:56learn a from those days and they will make you better for the future.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00I think the most beautiful moment for me is when you see the baby

0:09:00 > 0:09:10crying. You relax because the baby is fine. They are the best moments.

0:09:10 > 0:09:14Thank you very much, Kevin. How do you feel? When it comes to the

0:09:14 > 0:09:20crunch, would you really care who was in the room? No. If a man was

0:09:20 > 0:09:23standing outside comic you lot put me into this situation you can get

0:09:23 > 0:09:32me out of it. You weren't squeamish ten months ago!I like that. Let's

0:09:32 > 0:09:39talk about Peaky Blinders.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Dave in lighting, can you tweak those knobs

0:09:41 > 0:09:43and set the scene for us.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45Lower...

0:09:45 > 0:09:46Lower...

0:09:46 > 0:09:48Cue misty/moody floor effect.

0:09:48 > 0:09:54Little bit lower.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58Yep, that's Peaky Blinders.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02Now, Helen, season four.

0:10:02 > 0:10:08Season four is off the charts, I hear.Susan four is as good as

0:10:08 > 0:10:12season one. There was a moment in season one when Tommy had red dye on

0:10:12 > 0:10:20his hand and I remember thinking, this is it. There is a same moment

0:10:20 > 0:10:25in season four when I thought, it is back there and I am so excited about

0:10:25 > 0:10:31it.We don't want to give any spoilers. Tell us as much as you can

0:10:31 > 0:10:36about where we find auntie Polly, Tommy, and the rest of the Peaky

0:10:36 > 0:10:41Blinders.At the end of season three we are all being led. Everybody

0:10:41 > 0:10:50hates each other. In the first few moments of season four, UC is being

0:10:50 > 0:10:57led to the gallows, four characters. -- you see us. In that moment Polly

0:10:57 > 0:11:01calls for the Virgin Mary. She believes in that moment she sees her

0:11:01 > 0:11:05daughter. Either she has had a breakdown and cannot cope with the

0:11:05 > 0:11:10reality or she has had a vision. Either way, now she believes that

0:11:10 > 0:11:16the soles of her children are with her and so, now, like Tommy and

0:11:16 > 0:11:21Arther, she's fearless because she believes she has no fear of death.

0:11:21 > 0:11:26And now nothing will stop them. All you need to know is, are they going

0:11:26 > 0:11:34to destroy each other all the enemy? We have a very interesting enemy.

0:11:34 > 0:11:39Familiar faces have joined the cast. Oscar winners. Adrien Brody. That is

0:11:39 > 0:11:45pretty cool, isn't it?This is what is so clever. No one is united more

0:11:45 > 0:11:51when people know what they hate. And the Mafia arrive. As the Mafia

0:11:51 > 0:11:56arrives, that is the moment that you think, Shelby is actually going to

0:11:56 > 0:12:03be able to defeat them or not. They all go back to a proper gangster

0:12:03 > 0:12:13flick, which is defending the turf. They are back. She is very good at

0:12:13 > 0:12:19telling it.I am. Sometimes you sit here and go, watch it, I won't.This

0:12:19 > 0:12:25is what happened to me last time we met. I am obsessed with the

0:12:25 > 0:12:30programme. I absolutely love it. It is the quality of the writing and

0:12:30 > 0:12:35the cinematography, the acting. We were trying to find a clip, won't

0:12:35 > 0:12:45we?That mist and fog has played havoc. But, your character, too

0:12:45 > 0:12:50naughty in episode one and two and in episode three we found a clip

0:12:50 > 0:12:56that is suitable for this time of night. This is an exclusive. What do

0:12:56 > 0:13:17you say? Want to dance?I don't dance anymore.That is a shame.What

0:13:17 > 0:13:25gaming! I love the look. That is absolutely great. There is a

0:13:25 > 0:13:28character who appears tomorrow, Jessie Eden, a real character from

0:13:28 > 0:13:36the 20th-century.Tellers about her. She was in Birmingham in 1926. At 31

0:13:36 > 0:13:43she stood and she made 10,000 women walk out of motor factory to ask for

0:13:43 > 0:13:47equal pay for that she did it twice was then she worked in Russia and

0:13:47 > 0:13:53came back to this country and stood for tenants. Just an extraordinary

0:13:53 > 0:13:59character. The Jessie Eden we have is not exactly the same. Stephen

0:13:59 > 0:14:04Knight talks about seeing these characters at the corner of his eye

0:14:04 > 0:14:08and he refers to Anthony Eden and like he does to Churchill in this.

0:14:08 > 0:14:13She has one of the coolest entrances in episode one. It is a very cool

0:14:13 > 0:14:19scene.It is brilliant that the writers are included in such a

0:14:19 > 0:14:25timely storyline. It is very much in the news. Even your daughter, who is

0:14:25 > 0:14:32just ten, is very passionate about the subject. When I was not very

0:14:32 > 0:14:35welcome and she knocked on neighbour Pozner doors and got her godmother

0:14:35 > 0:14:42to take her down there and March for equality. That was in January. I am

0:14:42 > 0:14:48very proud of her.I really cannot wait for that. The new series Peaky

0:14:48 > 0:14:54Blinders begins tomorrow BBC Two.

0:14:54 > 0:15:00And there is a movie.And a musical.

0:15:00 > 0:15:01On last night's show, Team Rickshaw brought sunshine

0:15:01 > 0:15:02to Morecambe with their smiles.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04Today, they've been pedalling to Penrith.

0:15:04 > 0:15:05A whopping 59 miles.

0:15:05 > 0:15:09From what we've been hearing, it's been a real uphill challenge.

0:15:09 > 0:15:21How are the team holding up? They have completed 327 miles. They

0:15:21 > 0:15:28are enjoying the company of Penrith! CHEERING

0:15:28 > 0:15:37We are here. Oh, my word. On the subject of Peaky Blinders, Team

0:15:37 > 0:15:46Rickshaw has played a blinder. We are going to rename the Lake

0:15:46 > 0:15:49District the Ache District and this is why.

0:15:49 > 0:15:54It feels grim this morning. The weather is miserable. It is 5am and

0:15:54 > 0:15:58we are ready to head off from Morecambe. What do you make of it?

0:15:58 > 0:16:05Cold, but the people are lovely. Can we not go to somewhere warm? Don't

0:16:05 > 0:16:16worry about it.Ready? Yes! Despite Sabra feeling mid-journey blues, we

0:16:16 > 0:16:24have good wishes. Look at this. Amazing. Thank you. A nice bit of

0:16:24 > 0:16:31cake, Sabra. And I get a bottle of whiskey! And as the sun rises, we

0:16:31 > 0:16:37cannot help but enjoy the spectacular views that surround us.

0:16:37 > 0:16:43Breathe it in. It is a delight, this coastline. You have the stretch of

0:16:43 > 0:16:47the estuary and around the other side, the pebbled coves. From

0:16:47 > 0:16:54enjoying the Seaview to the Hillview. It is Luke's task to get

0:16:54 > 0:17:01us to the top. We have been joined by cyclists. Just be careful. No

0:17:01 > 0:17:07way! And we got a helping hand from

0:17:07 > 0:17:13Luke's twin brother. Is it heavy? It is heavy. I am pleased we met your

0:17:13 > 0:17:24brother. Come on. This is what you call brotherly love! The rickshaw

0:17:24 > 0:17:28challenge is hard, but nothing in comparison to the difficult personal

0:17:28 > 0:17:36journey that Lewis from Stockport -- Liv from Stockport has faced. Her

0:17:36 > 0:17:40dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and Liv saw him suffer a lot

0:17:40 > 0:17:46of pain before he died.He was suffering a hell of a lot but he

0:17:46 > 0:17:53said the love carried him through. By the end, he could not walk. He

0:17:53 > 0:18:00was basically paralysed by it and could not talk. It hurts me.He was

0:18:00 > 0:18:06never quiet, ever. What are you thinking about? Just not having him

0:18:06 > 0:18:11any more. One minute he was there, and now he is not. If you get

0:18:11 > 0:18:16married, I think he would walk me down the aisle and when I have

0:18:16 > 0:18:25children, he will not see -- they will not see their grandad. And

0:18:25 > 0:18:33sometimes, I wish it was me that had got it. Because it is not fair.

0:18:33 > 0:18:41Because he was really talented. And he made the most of his talents. He

0:18:41 > 0:18:49did! You know, as a father, the last thing you would want is for you to

0:18:49 > 0:18:55say that.He would not want to take that away. I am not very good at

0:18:55 > 0:18:59thinking about myself and taking care of myself because I like to

0:18:59 > 0:19:04take care of others. What would he make of how you are doing? He would

0:19:04 > 0:19:13support me and give me a big cuddle. Incredibly proud., you go, girl.

0:19:13 > 0:19:17That kind of encouragement is what the team needs for what we are now

0:19:17 > 0:19:25about to face. The Kirk Stone Pass. The weather today is so random and

0:19:25 > 0:19:29weird, it is hard to regulate temperature. This is a challenge for

0:19:29 > 0:19:36the next hour and a half, Greg. We can do this. We can do this.

0:19:42 > 0:19:51A slight malfunction. The chain underneath. It burst. Up to a 20%

0:19:51 > 0:20:06gradient, this. CHEERING On top of the world. On top of the

0:20:06 > 0:20:16world. Let's hear it, everyone. CHEERING

0:20:16 > 0:20:24Huge celebrations when we got to the top of what was 1500 feet. Let's

0:20:24 > 0:20:31hear it for Team Rickshaw, everyone. You know what it is like to get to

0:20:31 > 0:20:36the top. Greg, that was a few hours ago. What have you been doing it

0:20:36 > 0:20:44since you left the rickshaw?I went to the hotel and I had a long bath.

0:20:44 > 0:20:48How are you feeling? Feeling good and fresh and warm again because it

0:20:48 > 0:20:56was pretty cold.Get some sleep because it is an early one tomorrow.

0:20:56 > 0:21:02Liv, you were incredibly brave, what you said.Feeling OK? Feeling great,

0:21:02 > 0:21:07feeling good. With my team and my family. In what is a very colourful

0:21:07 > 0:21:15square tonight. These wonderful people dressed wonderfully. Isn't it

0:21:15 > 0:21:20lovely? It is to do with the winter droving festival around these parts.

0:21:20 > 0:21:27You have fire in the studio but nothing in comparison to the trail

0:21:27 > 0:21:32where Luke will be cycling up the cobbles. Before he does, he gives

0:21:32 > 0:21:34information on how you can support and donate.

0:21:34 > 0:21:41Absolutely smashed it. If you would like to support Luke and the rest of

0:21:41 > 0:22:02Team Rickshaw, text. Donate £5. To donate £10, or £20... All of your

0:22:02 > 0:22:08donation will go to BBC Children In Need and you must be 16 or over.

0:22:08 > 0:22:15Terms and conditions on the website. Where you can donate any amount

0:22:15 > 0:22:24online.Thank you.Smashed it. Luke will be here shortly, awaited by his

0:22:24 > 0:22:30family, including his brother who use or cycling. It was brilliant

0:22:30 > 0:22:35today, I enjoyed cycling with you. What did you make of it? It was

0:22:35 > 0:22:39brilliant. So good to surprise him but I am sure he will get me back.

0:22:39 > 0:22:44You up for doing the rest of the root?It would be tough.I do not

0:22:44 > 0:22:50see why not. You said how special it was you got the opportunity to

0:22:50 > 0:22:56cycle.I never thought I cycle side by side on the road with Luke

0:22:56 > 0:23:01because of his cerebral palsy. Because of that, he could not do any

0:23:01 > 0:23:06training on the road. This new experience, feeling the wind in his

0:23:06 > 0:23:11face. He trained on an exercise bike in the house. What has it been to

0:23:11 > 0:23:16watch the television and see what he has been doing? It is surreal to see

0:23:16 > 0:23:23him outside on a bike. The last seven weeks, all we have heard is

0:23:23 > 0:23:26him huffing and puffing in a different room on an exercise bike

0:23:26 > 0:23:33but seeing him do it, the hard work has paid off, really proud. What

0:23:33 > 0:23:39will you say? When you see him? So proud and all that the team, I am so

0:23:39 > 0:23:46proud of them all.Penrith, welcome Luke and the rickshaw. Up the

0:23:46 > 0:23:52cobbles lit up by the flames. Here he is. He knows how to arrive in

0:24:37 > 0:24:48Hello.When I was younger, I felt just the same as anyone else my age.

0:24:48 > 0:24:57I could run, dance and play and my ambition was to become a journalist.

0:24:57 > 0:25:04But, a few years ago, I began to have problems with my balance.

0:25:04 > 0:25:13Doctors discovered I had a really rare neurodegenerative condition.

0:25:13 > 0:25:24And having it sucks. Niemann-Pick affects every area of my life. From

0:25:24 > 0:25:32my walking, talking, thinking and even my eating. There is currently

0:25:32 > 0:25:38no cure for the condition, and I know that without a cure-all, it

0:25:38 > 0:25:45will get worse. During this tough time, I have been helped by a

0:25:45 > 0:25:55charity called Niemann-Pick UK. They are supported by Children In Need.

0:25:55 > 0:26:02This year, I am taking part in the rickshaw challenge. I want to have

0:26:02 > 0:26:09adventures and do something like this, while I can. Every penny

0:26:09 > 0:26:23counts, so please, give what you can.CHEERING
