:00:20. > :00:25.Hello and welcome to the One Show, I am pleased to say that after cycling

:00:26. > :00:30.nearly 500 miles and raising almost 3.5 million for Children In Need,

:00:31. > :00:36.the baker boy is back! 3.5 million for Children In Need,

:00:37. > :00:43.is parked up, it won't be moving for the G8, the fans have turned up to

:00:44. > :00:49.see Team Rickshaw! Having a well deserved rest. Goodness me. How have

:00:50. > :00:55.the last 2 days been with people waving at you and throwing fivers at

:00:56. > :01:01.you? I have had 10 people recognise me over the last 2 days! I think

:01:02. > :01:13.it's just because of the hair. My haircut stands out. I just have said

:01:14. > :01:17.hi to people, people know me. I'm delighted that you are still happy!

:01:18. > :01:27.Who slept the most? What time you get up? I think 11! You all did

:01:28. > :01:33.phenomenally well, it's lovely to see you back here, fit and healthy

:01:34. > :01:37.and still smiling. During the last 8 days, Matt and Team Rickshaw used

:01:38. > :01:42.their strength and determination to raise of the nominal amount of

:01:43. > :01:43.money. Tonight 's guest is a real champion who was also no stranger to

:01:44. > :01:48.hard work. Here he is, champion who was also no stranger to

:01:49. > :01:52.at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

:01:53. > :02:01.The final dive forward Tom Daley for gold at the Commonwealth Games.

:02:02. > :02:04.Retaining his Commonwealth Games title, he won four years ago in

:02:05. > :02:23.Delhi! Here he is again. Please welcome Tom Daley! Come on

:02:24. > :02:26.in. We are just on this theme of Team Rickshaw, you know what it's

:02:27. > :02:30.all about, at a young age, putting the hours in and getting the

:02:31. > :02:34.results. They've done incredibly well to raise money for such a great

:02:35. > :02:38.cause, I know only too well how much effort it takes, get up in the

:02:39. > :02:42.morning, do all the training you need to get a great end result and

:02:43. > :02:46.that's what they have done. You are the perfect guest of them tonight!

:02:47. > :02:51.Congratulations on your engagement. We have a brilliant picture of you

:02:52. > :02:57.and Lance and Donald Sutherland the actor! I couldn't believe it, we

:02:58. > :03:02.were having a fight at a premiere, it wasn't until we looked

:03:03. > :03:10.afterwards, its president snow in the background! Coming up, we are

:03:11. > :03:16.looking Team Rickshaw front row seats for a special performance from

:03:17. > :03:24.Jess Glynne. Amazing night on Friday. It was! What was the

:03:25. > :03:30.highlight? I guess the performance but also my highlight was going to

:03:31. > :03:33.the Queen Vic. It's so so real, a lot smaller than I thought but it

:03:34. > :03:40.was so special going in there, meeting our fee. I think I actually

:03:41. > :03:47.saw her passing R2-D2 in the corridor as well.

:03:48. > :03:49.saw her passing R2-D2 in the that bit! You were too focused on

:03:50. > :03:51.the fact you were about to sing as you will do later, she will be

:03:52. > :03:52.singing Take Me you will do later, she will be

:03:53. > :03:59.Children In Need single. you will do later, she will be

:04:00. > :04:02.prosecuting parents who take their children out of school to go on

:04:03. > :04:02.holiday but this was thrown into doubt recently 1 of

:04:03. > :04:05.holiday but this was thrown into persuaded magistrates to overturn

:04:06. > :04:10.his fine. persuaded magistrates to overturn

:04:11. > :04:12.hauled in front of the courts, she thought there was a good chance of

:04:13. > :04:22.getting off. Tom went with her. Last November, Jackie and her 9

:04:23. > :04:25.-year-old daughter took a 3-week trip backpacking through

:04:26. > :04:27.-year-old daughter took a 3-week Europe. But now it's memorable for

:04:28. > :04:32.all the wrong reasons because Jackie has been prosecuted over the term

:04:33. > :04:34.Tom Holliday and she could be looking at a possible 3 months in

:04:35. > :04:40.prison. Because while looking at a possible 3 months in

:04:41. > :04:45.travelling with her mum, she should have been in class. You must be

:04:46. > :04:53.Jackie. Lovely to meet you. Come this way. Why did you take Hazel out

:04:54. > :04:57.of school was Mike I had 3 weeks of annual leave, I could either spend

:04:58. > :05:05.at home or use it for a backpacking trip. You thought it was education

:05:06. > :05:08.but just in a different format? She had a lot more varied experiences in

:05:09. > :05:11.those weeks than she would have done in school, I expected a fine because

:05:12. > :05:17.that's what it said in the school policy. While Jackie e-mailed the

:05:18. > :05:21.school about the trip, they never got the message as their IT system

:05:22. > :05:24.treated it as spam. Once they realised Hazel was missing school

:05:25. > :05:29.for a holiday, the local authority decided to prosecute Jackie as she

:05:30. > :05:35.had been fined for doing the same thing previously. Is that when you

:05:36. > :05:41.realise the severity? Yes, we were dumbfounded. Worst case scenario is

:05:42. > :05:47.?2500 fine and all 3 months imprisonment. If you could turn the

:05:48. > :05:51.clock back, would you still do it? We've had a bonding experience very

:05:52. > :05:56.few mothers and daughters managed to have. She grew up in those 3 weeks,

:05:57. > :06:00.it changed her, we will remember it for the rest of our lives, I would

:06:01. > :06:03.never regret that. The number of parents fined for taking their kids

:06:04. > :06:09.out of school for holidays shot up by a quarter in the last school year

:06:10. > :06:17.to well over 50,000. Last month John decided to fight a ?120 fine in

:06:18. > :06:22.court, imposed taking his daughter to Florida. What's more, he won. So

:06:23. > :06:31.he has driven from his home on the Olive White to advise Jackie on her

:06:32. > :06:35.court case. -- on the Isle of Wight. A lot of people might argue, for

:06:36. > :06:41.?60, I do not better off paying that? Why did you buy the? Possibly

:06:42. > :06:46.because I'm really stubborn and if I haven't done anything wrong, I won't

:06:47. > :06:52.pay. I will side what best for my kids. But you are affecting their

:06:53. > :06:55.education. If they were struggling at school I may have a different

:06:56. > :07:02.opinion in terms of holidays. My daughter, she was level 3 in

:07:03. > :07:06.everything, so she is in the top 2% of kids in her country for her

:07:07. > :07:09.education despite the fact that her dad has taken her on holiday

:07:10. > :07:14.sometimes twice a year since she started school. Can you give me a

:07:15. > :07:23.brief outline of the fundamentals of the defence? What the law says is it

:07:24. > :07:27.is an offence if they don't attend school, and unauthorised school to a

:07:28. > :07:31.breach of the legislation, they have to look at the wider attendance and

:07:32. > :07:35.they said my daughter 's attendance is at worst 90%, they cannot find

:07:36. > :07:43.that as a breach of the legislation and they have no case to answer.

:07:44. > :07:45.John's 3 is not yet set in stone. His local council is appealing to

:07:46. > :07:50.the High Court as they think the magistrate has got it wrong. No

:07:51. > :07:54.question about it, I will fight it, I would prefer not to be involved in

:07:55. > :07:58.this fight but I will not walk away from it, I will spend whatever is

:07:59. > :08:05.necessary to make sure the law is clarified. Do you feel more

:08:06. > :08:09.confident now? I feel inspired! The big day has arrived and Jackie and

:08:10. > :08:15.her son are sitting off the court stopped even though he didn't go on

:08:16. > :08:24.court, as Hazel's dead is also in court, facing the same charge. --

:08:25. > :08:30.Hazel's dead. I'm worried, it's not just me riding on this, thousands

:08:31. > :08:37.are following the case. The verdict is in and Jackie and Macs have both

:08:38. > :08:43.been found guilty. They received fines. The local media are there in

:08:44. > :08:47.the background, this case has caused a stir and unfortunately it wasn't

:08:48. > :08:52.good news for her. How do you feel about the outcome? Very, very

:08:53. > :08:55.disappointed, I don't think justice was served, it's not the public

:08:56. > :09:01.interest to go persecuting good parents. For their part,

:09:02. > :09:08.Herefordshire Council told us that while they have no wish sobbing

:09:09. > :09:11.children experiencing new challenges and cultures, they mustn't interfere

:09:12. > :09:19.with their education. -- stopping children. Tom, as a junior world

:09:20. > :09:24.champion, it's not a holiday, you taking time off, you know what it's

:09:25. > :09:29.like to take time off, would you say your education suffered? I don't

:09:30. > :09:34.think it suffered from sport, whenever we went away, we had to do

:09:35. > :09:38.Skype calls with teachers, take work away with us, but sport teaches you

:09:39. > :09:43.so many different life lessons, whether it's time management,

:09:44. > :09:46.discipline, setting goals, I don't think I would have been as good in

:09:47. > :09:57.school unless I had support to teach me those skills. Can I ask you what

:09:58. > :10:06.grades you got? In GCSE, I got 5 A stars. I am just competitive, in

:10:07. > :10:13.anything that I do, I try and win! It's been a record year for talking

:10:14. > :10:16.in a record year for Children In Need, you play your part because you

:10:17. > :10:20.are part of the writing book of this children's book, called The Curious

:10:21. > :10:27.Tale of Fi Rex, it has been written by all these people. Rod Stewart,

:10:28. > :10:33.Andy Murray, U, Sir Paul McCartney, how did this come about? It's such a

:10:34. > :10:36.sweet little book, if any of you get the chance, it would be amazing if

:10:37. > :10:44.you could buy it and help Children In Need, I like to do anything I can

:10:45. > :10:47.in my position, to help anyone. There are many different causes,

:10:48. > :10:52.Children In Need is 1 of them but I do stuff for the French humour

:10:53. > :10:59.charity, because my dad suffered from a brain tumour -- the brain

:11:00. > :11:03.tumour charity. I have a history of bullying, I wanted to do things to

:11:04. > :11:10.help people, as soon as this opportunity came up, I wanted to do

:11:11. > :11:15.what I can. You had no idea who had written what before you? No, you

:11:16. > :11:22.just had to kick it up as they went along! You had 1 line of the

:11:23. > :11:27.previous person's text... You kind of have an outline of what was going

:11:28. > :11:31.on but you could take it in whatever direction you want it, it was fun.

:11:32. > :11:36.The drawings are pretty fun, too. It's a lovely book. You mention the

:11:37. > :11:42.anti- bullying campaign which you are doing with the cartoon network,

:11:43. > :11:49.what is happening? We are launching the CN Buddy network, I suffered

:11:50. > :11:53.from bullying when I was younger, going through school, it was a tough

:11:54. > :11:58.time the me and you feel alone and like to contact anyone, now I have

:11:59. > :12:03.come out the other side of it, I want to help other people in the

:12:04. > :12:08.same situation and knowing it's not OK, you are not the only person

:12:09. > :12:14.being bullied, to be able to find a buddy, be able to trust and tell

:12:15. > :12:17.them, they can help you. The cartoon network have come up with fantastic

:12:18. > :12:24.animation to help get the message across. Don't suffer in silence,

:12:25. > :12:33.tell a friend of what's going on. Together we can stop bullying.

:12:34. > :12:45.It's a very interesting take, it's not just for those

:12:46. > :12:51.for bullies, if you are being bullied, the Observer, to help

:12:52. > :12:55.for bullies, if you are being stand up against bullies, especially

:12:56. > :13:07.for bullies, if you are being evolved massively, it's not just

:13:08. > :13:09.for bullies, if you are being thinking that it's not going to

:13:10. > :13:14.harm, sending this thinking that it's not going to

:13:15. > :13:16.this photo, but actually, it really does affect people and thinking

:13:17. > :13:22.about what you do before you post anything. You can find out anything

:13:23. > :13:29.you need to know about the campaign on the cartoon network's website

:13:30. > :13:34.will stop as Team Rickshaw know all too well, we have had a week of wild

:13:35. > :13:41.weather. Marty is in Cumbria to explain where all this rain comes

:13:42. > :13:47.from. In November 2009, at the bail in the

:13:48. > :13:52.from. In November 2009, at the bail books. Days of endless rain had

:13:53. > :13:56.catastrophic consequences, rivers burst their banks, homes and

:13:57. > :13:59.businesses were flooded, entire villages cut off. It was the single

:14:00. > :14:06.greatest downpour in British history. In fact, it rained so much

:14:07. > :14:13.on the 19th of November that 31.6 centimetres of rain fell in 24

:14:14. > :14:22.hours. But it didn't stop there, over a 4-day period, 49.5

:14:23. > :14:28.centimetres fell. Which is almost the entire annual rainfall of

:14:29. > :14:32.somewhere like London. It's a 1 in 1000 year event. There was so much

:14:33. > :14:39.rain that they don't want and Koke rivers burst their banks. This local

:14:40. > :14:47.farmer remembers it well. It was a tremendous amount of water, Keswick

:14:48. > :14:56.and Cockermouth were damaged, all the bridges were ruptured. It was a

:14:57. > :15:01.bit of a sorry state. So what caused such devastation? There are several

:15:02. > :15:09.factors that led to this extreme weather. 1st, Cumbria is England's

:15:10. > :15:14.most north-westerly County, after Ireland, the 1st landfall for

:15:15. > :15:18.weather systems from the Atlantic. And 2nd, all of these mountains mean

:15:19. > :15:23.that the warm, moist air coming off the Atlantic has to go up where it

:15:24. > :15:30.cools, condenses, turned into cloud comes as rain or snow.

:15:31. > :15:38.The geography means that there are no strangers to the rain around

:15:39. > :15:41.here. But what made the deluge so extreme this time was something that

:15:42. > :15:46.meteorologists call and atmospheric river. Atmospheric rivers are

:15:47. > :15:50.created when to weather systems, high-pressure system and a pressure

:15:51. > :15:56.system come together to create a channel that draws warm and moist

:15:57. > :16:00.air up between them. Let me show you with this contraption. Imagine this

:16:01. > :16:05.is a low pressure system over Iceland and is rotating

:16:06. > :16:11.anticlockwise. This is a high-pressure system over Europe

:16:12. > :16:15.rotating in a clockwise direction. Because they are rotating in

:16:16. > :16:19.opposite directions they draw in packets of warm and moist air up

:16:20. > :16:29.between them. Imagine that this is the warm air. If I get my weather

:16:30. > :16:34.systems spinning, and now I drop this warm and moist air and it fires

:16:35. > :16:38.it out. Each wheel rotates in the opposite direction drawing up the

:16:39. > :16:44.ping-pong ball through the channel. Just as the high and low pressure

:16:45. > :16:48.systems forced the atmospheric river straight into the Cambrian Mountains

:16:49. > :16:51.where it fell as rain. It was the combination of this atmospheric

:16:52. > :16:58.river and the mountainous geography the lead Cumbria to experience such

:16:59. > :17:00.a dramatic downpour. And it was made much worse by the fact that this

:17:01. > :17:06.severe weather system hung around for days and days. The local

:17:07. > :17:15.residents will never forget the wettest day in British history.

:17:16. > :17:19.And John is here. Last time you were on a couple of weeks ago you told us

:17:20. > :17:24.about this BBC weather watch. Just remind us of what this new

:17:25. > :17:29.initiative is. Well it is coming into its own this week. It is so

:17:30. > :17:35.easy to get online and off you go. You just register and take

:17:36. > :17:40.observations from where you live. If you look out of the money -- if you

:17:41. > :17:44.look out of the window and it is sunny, that is what you register.

:17:45. > :17:48.You could also take a temperature reading and the icing on the cake is

:17:49. > :17:51.the photographs. And we have had some great photographs coming in

:17:52. > :17:59.because the weather has been so horrendous. But that is helpful for

:18:00. > :18:01.us as the forecasters, it is the evidence on the ground which makes

:18:02. > :18:07.the difference to people's lives. The weather is all about impact. And

:18:08. > :18:12.we have seen some of that coming in through the photographs. These from

:18:13. > :18:19.the last 24 hours? Just in the past 24 hours. This from Cumbria, dutiful

:18:20. > :18:25.but also dangerous. We can see the extent of the flooding there. And

:18:26. > :18:32.then in Cumbria again, hazardous driving for this particular car.

:18:33. > :18:36.Trevor brought in a photograph from Cockermouth which had such

:18:37. > :18:42.horrendous flooding in 2009. Not so bad this time around. But more rain

:18:43. > :18:47.in the forecast. If we think back to last week we had storm Abigail, the

:18:48. > :18:54.first named storm from the Met Office. This was the impact it had

:18:55. > :18:58.on the coastline. This is from Ayrshire. And the lovely photograph

:18:59. > :19:02.from Argyll and Bute. Not many trees across the north and West of

:19:03. > :19:08.Scotland but we do expect another storm. The second named storm.

:19:09. > :19:14.Barney. That will hit parts of England and Wales tomorrow evening.

:19:15. > :19:18.Further south a lot more trees around and with gusts of up to 70

:19:19. > :19:24.miles an hour potentially we do expect some significant impact. And

:19:25. > :19:29.that impact is all-important. And I bet you mean trees coming down?

:19:30. > :19:36.Potentially trees coming down with those kind of gusts. And the ground

:19:37. > :19:43.saturated. Possibly power lines down and travel disruption. At the end of

:19:44. > :19:49.the week it does turn colder so possibly some snow. Get those

:19:50. > :19:53.pictures in. Get the snow boots on if you're going out with the

:19:54. > :20:00.camera! In a moment we find out just how much Team Rickshaw have raised.

:20:01. > :20:05.And they hit, the total has gone up just a bit more. But before we find

:20:06. > :20:13.out the new total let's remind ourselves of that 477 mile journey

:20:14. > :20:19.from lands end to the East End. Let's say goodbye to lands end. And

:20:20. > :20:23.let's go! What was that about the rickshaw

:20:24. > :20:29.challenged this year that made it the most successful yet? It was not

:20:30. > :20:42.the weather. Lands end was desolate and damp. How are your legs?

:20:43. > :20:47.Aching! I did it! Well done! The scenery helped. The West Country

:20:48. > :20:55.is the UK at its best but it was not that. I saw six young people who had

:20:56. > :20:59.hardly met before but their personal challenges behind them to achieve

:21:00. > :21:05.something they will remember all their lives.

:21:06. > :21:13.My family have helped me except my disability. I want to change my

:21:14. > :21:23.life. I'm sure that you brighten their everyday.

:21:24. > :21:31.Hello! Well done! Did you think your granddaughter would be such a big

:21:32. > :21:39.part of Team Rickshaw? Yes! This is a bit tricky. The things are

:21:40. > :21:45.slipping. George's father died in a cycling road accident. Just being

:21:46. > :21:47.here was brave. It seems to me you have an enormous amount of inner

:21:48. > :21:55.strength and when you get on the rickshaw, you can focus. You focus

:21:56. > :22:03.on why you're doing it and look back at what you have done. You know your

:22:04. > :22:08.dad would be proud. This year 's riders displayed an

:22:09. > :22:13.admirable amount of teamwork. Some were stronger than others but all

:22:14. > :22:20.pulled together when the emotional road was at its hardest. What do you

:22:21. > :22:24.make of the rest of Team Rickshaw? I love them, it is like a family.

:22:25. > :22:28.Everyone has been talking openly about why we are here. You have this

:22:29. > :22:41.common thread of being incredibly determined. Are we ready!

:22:42. > :22:50.Some started low in confidence but grew in front of our eyes. None more

:22:51. > :22:58.so than George G. I love being part of this. It is great. All my

:22:59. > :23:08.teachers and friends are so proud of me. You have proved yourself you can

:23:09. > :23:16.do stuff. I can. In life. I know that.

:23:17. > :23:19.So why has this year been such a spectacular success? It has to be

:23:20. > :23:26.because so many of you came out to encourage them. To give your support

:23:27. > :23:29.and your money as never before. Because you let these six young

:23:30. > :23:44.champions into your hearts. Thank you. All of you.

:23:45. > :23:57.To donate ?5 text team. If you feel more generous gift ?10. Text team
