:00:40. > :00:42.# Come on! Hello and welcome to

:00:43. > :00:44.The One Show, with Matt Baker. And as Al's away tonight,

:00:45. > :00:59.I'm joined by the lovely It's lovely to be here. Lovely

:01:00. > :01:04.music. We've just heard the London community Gospel choir, who tomorrow

:01:05. > :01:08.night will be appearing at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC's late-night

:01:09. > :01:11.Gospel Proms, alongside tonight's guest.

:01:43. > :01:56.hello again and welcome back. Hello! I'm in my second home. I love it

:01:57. > :02:00.here, I love London so much. Michelle, it is lovely to see you

:02:01. > :02:05.again. We did Strictly together, six years ago. We did, we did Strictly

:02:06. > :02:12.Come Dancing and I have something to say! Which camera should I look

:02:13. > :02:20.into? Number four. Listen, Brendan Cole! Let me tell you something! Let

:02:21. > :02:24.me tell you why we lost. My performance background -- you did

:02:25. > :02:29.not utilise my performance background from destiny 's Child,

:02:30. > :02:34.that could have been our edge! We had to do everything so technical...

:02:35. > :02:39.But I can say six years later, I can tell you why we lost! Miscue too.

:02:40. > :02:49.I have missed you so much. It was great, love you Strictly, love all

:02:50. > :02:55.the dancers. Rendon is probably running for cover now, poor man! --

:02:56. > :03:01.Brendan is. Brendan is an amazing, amazing dancer. But he's also

:03:02. > :03:09.stubborn. I mean that in a good way! Because everybody is like... I mean

:03:10. > :03:14.it, he knows he is stubborn but you can be stubborn when you are great

:03:15. > :03:21.at what you do. You are here... I don't want to read the headlines in

:03:22. > :03:26.the newspaper... We will talk about gospel very shortly.

:03:27. > :03:29.Back in April we visited Port Talbot - the Welsh town whose fate hangs

:03:30. > :03:32.in the balance while a potential buyer is sought for

:03:33. > :03:35.As of last week, the future of the 4,000 workers

:03:36. > :03:37.is now in the hands of the new Business,

:03:38. > :03:39.Energy and Industrial Strategy Secretary, Greg Clark.

:03:40. > :03:42.One thing he needs to understand - it's not just the jobs

:03:43. > :03:54.The Tata Steel works in Port Talbot, south Wales, it is up for sale but

:03:55. > :03:58.if a buyer can't be found it is facing closure. With more than 4000

:03:59. > :04:02.jobs at risk in the plant and thousands more in associated

:04:03. > :04:07.businesses. It's an anxious time and not just for the adults. I heard on

:04:08. > :04:16.the news about the people in the steelworks losing their jobs. How

:04:17. > :04:18.many people? Lots. When I grow up I would like to work in the

:04:19. > :04:25.steelworks. My dad is really worried. Until May, Natasha Devon

:04:26. > :04:29.was the government's mental-health champion for schools. We have

:04:30. > :04:32.brought her to Port Talbot to find out what impact the possible closure

:04:33. > :04:38.of the steelworks is having on the town's children. In 2014 the charity

:04:39. > :04:42.Young minds did a survey of 5000 young people. The results were quite

:04:43. > :04:45.unexpected. Children as young as 12 were concerned with the prospect of

:04:46. > :04:49.things like unemployment, things that might happen to them after they

:04:50. > :04:54.left school and the uncertainty of their future. So I think in a place

:04:55. > :04:57.like Port Talbot and everything that has happened with Tata Steel, those

:04:58. > :05:02.kind of concerns are going to be magnified. In the shadow of the

:05:03. > :05:06.steelworks is this youth centre. School is out and all the local kids

:05:07. > :05:10.have got together to play football. How much does the uncertainty

:05:11. > :05:16.hanging over the town affect them? And the sidelines, I meet some of

:05:17. > :05:19.the football team's parents. Do the children feel the stress? If there

:05:20. > :05:23.are financial concerns in the household I think they would come

:05:24. > :05:28.yes. Do you think the kids sense there is something going on? My

:05:29. > :05:33.youngest said that, we don't need to go on holiday this year, we can save

:05:34. > :05:37.the money. How does it work around the kids? Do you talk about the

:05:38. > :05:40.financial worries in front of them? You can't shy way from it because

:05:41. > :05:45.it's all over the media and they watch the TV. So what do the kids

:05:46. > :05:50.themselves think? I have brought Natasha meet some of the football

:05:51. > :05:55.club's older children, who could be some other birds to affected. Do you

:05:56. > :05:59.all have a family member who works in the steelworks? My dad, my

:06:00. > :06:05.grandfather, my grandfather's brother. My father, two of my

:06:06. > :06:11.uncles, two of my auntie 's. Both my grandfathers used to. My father, two

:06:12. > :06:18.of my uncles used to work there. Does it make you worry about the

:06:19. > :06:22.future? If my father loses his job, I worry about how it's going to

:06:23. > :06:26.affect me. If it closes, people will be leaving the area which means

:06:27. > :06:32.shops will have less customers and shop owners could lose their jobs.

:06:33. > :06:36.People would start to move and we wouldn't have any friends, we would

:06:37. > :06:39.have to start newcomer like. What do you think will happen to your

:06:40. > :06:45.generation, if it closes? Nobody will live here. It will be like a

:06:46. > :06:49.ghost town. Natasha wants to find out how it is all affecting the

:06:50. > :06:54.teenagers. When I say mental health to you, what do you think that

:06:55. > :06:57.means? Stress and stuff like that. She asks them to mark on a board how

:06:58. > :07:01.positive they feel on a scale from one to 12. There is something

:07:02. > :07:06.stopping you from being a 12. What would it take for you to be on a 12?

:07:07. > :07:10.If you knew about job security and it was going to keep going the way

:07:11. > :07:16.it was going before all this came out in the news, it would probably

:07:17. > :07:20.be closer to a 12. While she can't solve the bigger issues in the town,

:07:21. > :07:25.Natasha shows the group some stress management techniques. We spent so

:07:26. > :07:28.much of our time thinking about things that happened ages ago or

:07:29. > :07:31.thinking about things that will happen in the future, but the key is

:07:32. > :07:36.to bring yourself back into the moment. It's the end of the session

:07:37. > :07:41.and some progress has been made. Are we all happy? Are we further down

:07:42. > :07:46.that scale than we were at the beginning? What was concerning them

:07:47. > :07:49.was the effect it was happening -- having on their parents and the

:07:50. > :07:52.community. All of these things were playing really heavily on their

:07:53. > :07:56.mind. They kept using the word stress over and over again. I think

:07:57. > :08:01.we need to learn from what happened when other communities were left to

:08:02. > :08:06.fall by the wayside. We saw a huge surge in poor mental health.

:08:07. > :08:10.Attention needs to be given to this area if we want to think about the

:08:11. > :08:15.future these teenagers. The steelworks is a linchpin of this

:08:16. > :08:19.community. This remarkable community here in Port Talbot. The future

:08:20. > :08:23.depends on its children. Worrying about what their concerns are and

:08:24. > :08:30.making sure they have the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at

:08:31. > :08:33.them is in everyone's interest. Growing up is stressful enough

:08:34. > :08:38.without having all that on your plate, isn't it? John, it's been

:08:39. > :08:42.quite a while since we spoke about it, what has been going on? The

:08:43. > :08:45.Prime Minister was in Wales this morning and she met the First

:08:46. > :08:49.Minister there and they talked about Tata Steel. The key thing that came

:08:50. > :08:53.out of that was the Prime Minister saying she wants to see steel-making

:08:54. > :08:56.here in Wales. She thinks it is in the Welsh national interest and the

:08:57. > :09:00.UK national interest. That seems like a clear statement but the

:09:01. > :09:06.situation is so unclear. When we talked about this back in April, the

:09:07. > :09:09.business was up for sale. There were others coming in trying to cherry

:09:10. > :09:14.pick. The government said they were behind it but they might offer loans

:09:15. > :09:19.or help with pensions. Suddenly just over a week ago it all gets halted.

:09:20. > :09:24.Is it all for sale right now? We don't really know. They say they

:09:25. > :09:29.have halted it. Could it go back on sale in the future? Maybe. At the

:09:30. > :09:35.moment they are pursuing a possible merger with a German conglomerate

:09:36. > :09:38.and that might sound like a good deal for Tata Steel but they are not

:09:39. > :09:44.guaranteeing anything for the 4000 workers at Port Talbot. Might the

:09:45. > :09:49.Brexit vote have changed the outlook for Port Talbot and the wider

:09:50. > :09:53.community? Officially the managing director of Tata Steel Europe says

:09:54. > :09:57.it's too early to call, we don't know yet. However, they were clearly

:09:58. > :10:01.worrying about the vote because they wrote to all their employees

:10:02. > :10:06.beforehand and said we can't tell you how to vote but just remember

:10:07. > :10:11.how important Europe is to this business, but actually Port Talbot

:10:12. > :10:15.voted to Brexit quite strongly. The pound is quite weak which is good

:10:16. > :10:21.news for you visiting over here! That makes it more competitive and

:10:22. > :10:24.it could survive a bit better. The other is long-term, when we leave

:10:25. > :10:30.the European Union we can put up tariffs and stop cheap Chinese steel

:10:31. > :10:39.coming over if we want to. It was a big hug for leave voters, wasn't it?

:10:40. > :10:44.-- a big hub. Good. Thank you very much indeed. Weather-wise, goodness

:10:45. > :10:48.me, the sun is out and for the next few days we are promised a

:10:49. > :10:50.sweltering heatwave across the UK. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:10:51. > :10:54.33 degrees! What better time for Marty

:10:55. > :10:57.to have a look at the sun But he didn't make

:10:58. > :11:11.things easy for himself. Without it, our planet would be a

:11:12. > :11:16.cold, lifeless lump of rock, the sun. Today's technology is allowing

:11:17. > :11:22.us to capture amazing new images of this celestial body. So, we are off

:11:23. > :11:28.on a journey. I'm going to visit the Observatory of ace astronomical

:11:29. > :11:32.cameraman Mark Payne Gill, who just happens to be filming me right now.

:11:33. > :11:35.We thought we would give ourselves a bit of an extra challenge by seeing

:11:36. > :11:40.if we could go the whole filming day using nothing but solar energy. Till

:11:41. > :11:43.Ming is an energy hungry business so we are tapping into the latest

:11:44. > :11:49.technologies to go green. -- filming. The first hurdle is getting

:11:50. > :11:52.to our film location nearly ten miles away without using fossil

:11:53. > :11:58.fuels. This is a solar powered bicycle. Here we've got a solar

:11:59. > :12:03.panel which produces electricity which is stored in a battery down in

:12:04. > :12:08.this trailer, which in turn powers this wheel hub motor which should

:12:09. > :12:16.give my pedalling a little bit of an extra boost. But, you say, what

:12:17. > :12:21.about the crew? We have thought of that too. Our team have electric

:12:22. > :12:26.cars that we have charged at this solar car port, one of the first in

:12:27. > :12:30.the country. We also use the solar panels here to charge the 55

:12:31. > :12:37.batteries that will power our telescope, sound and camera kit.

:12:38. > :12:41.Time to get on the road. The amount of energy reaching the Earth from

:12:42. > :12:46.the sun is around eight thousand times the world's total energy needs

:12:47. > :12:51.and right now it's helping send my bike hurtling along. This is great.

:12:52. > :13:01.I'm doing 12 miles an hour up a hill, powered by solar power. A

:13:02. > :13:06.speedy 40 minutes later and I arrived at cameraman Mark's rather

:13:07. > :13:15.unique Observatory. Now we just need to wait for the sun. Relying on

:13:16. > :13:19.solar power in vaults planning ahead. Solar PV panels still work

:13:20. > :13:24.when it's cloudy but topping up our batteries will take much longer.

:13:25. > :13:31.Finally the sun appears and we're ready to see that telescope. In case

:13:32. > :13:42.you're wondering, the Observatory is powered by a solar panel and solar

:13:43. > :13:46.charged batteries. Mark's telescope has special filters which allow him

:13:47. > :13:52.to view the sun safely. That's good, I like that. This telescope is

:13:53. > :14:01.programmed to track the stars and the sun. Oh! That's great. Watch the

:14:02. > :14:07.monitor and you will hopefully see the sun come in, there you go. That

:14:08. > :14:11.at that, that's beautiful. This is a live image that the sun has taken

:14:12. > :14:18.right now. The telescope looks at a very narrow wavelength of light that

:14:19. > :14:21.our eyes cannot see. Today's sky is hazy so we're not getting much

:14:22. > :14:25.definition but Mark has some images he filmed on a clearer day. See how

:14:26. > :14:30.much more detail you can see when the conditions are right. The main

:14:31. > :14:33.detail of the sun which got me hooked was when I saw prominences on

:14:34. > :14:38.the sand areas of energy coming off the sun. There is an area of matter

:14:39. > :14:44.coming off that looks like a tree. Our son is a rising sea of hot

:14:45. > :14:53.ionised gas known as plasma and it is driven by nuclear fusion reaction

:14:54. > :14:59.at its core. -- our sun. Each year around 44 quadrant Ian Watts of

:15:00. > :15:02.solar energy hit the Earth. In recent years we have made huge

:15:03. > :15:08.strides in converting some of this energy into electricity. So, our

:15:09. > :15:12.solar powered day is done and it's time for some well earned dinner.

:15:13. > :15:22.Which by the way we have kept on a solar cooker.

:15:23. > :15:28.Tepid soup! Maybe the cooking didn't work well, but everything we filmed

:15:29. > :15:37.today was powered by a star and 93 million miles away. Well, on that

:15:38. > :15:46.tepid sick note! It didn't look nice. It goes without saying, don't

:15:47. > :15:49.point a telescope at the sun, you could do no amount of harm to

:15:50. > :15:56.yourself. And make sure your soup is hot!

:15:57. > :16:09.Michelle, you have been singing since 1987? She looks so Innocent!

:16:10. > :16:17.So hopeful about life in the world. Anyway, yes. Do you miss her?

:16:18. > :16:22.Sometimes I do, you want to go back to the innocence of being a child,

:16:23. > :16:29.where as you get older, your eyes see so much, and we knew are child,

:16:30. > :16:36.you love everybody, you are not mad at everybody, everything is

:16:37. > :16:42.beautiful, even the snotty nosed boy at school getting on your nerves, it

:16:43. > :16:51.is beautiful. This is all about the Late Night Gospel Prom. We use

:16:52. > :16:56.singing back then? I sang my first solo in church at about six or

:16:57. > :17:03.seven, I had an aunt who had a classically trained voice, and she

:17:04. > :17:07.would sing Great Is Thy Faithfulness, and my uncle said, if

:17:08. > :17:11.you sound that good, you could possibly do something of your own,

:17:12. > :17:14.so he taught me the hymn and I sang it as a solo, so I was born and

:17:15. > :17:24.raised in church like so many entertainers that you know of today,

:17:25. > :17:28.got their start with gospel roots. The Proms is a showcase the

:17:29. > :17:32.classical music, but now they are embracing gospel. What can we expect

:17:33. > :17:40.from tomorrow? Tomorrow you can expect full of life, great spirit.

:17:41. > :17:47.Gospel music has a way of changing an atmosphere, changing a heart,

:17:48. > :17:51.changing a life, and I am so glad, because gospel music is just as

:17:52. > :17:59.influential as pop, R, country, wrap, classical. A lot of music

:18:00. > :18:03.today burst from gospel music, the blues came from it. And that

:18:04. > :18:05.interaction you get from your audience, the Proms is about getting

:18:06. > :18:12.the audience involved, and the Albert Hall is perfect. You have to

:18:13. > :18:16.be engaged in gospel music. Tomorrow I am hosting the entire show, so I

:18:17. > :18:21.am hoping that people don't just sit, that they feel. I have a funny

:18:22. > :18:26.story of the Royal Albert Hall as far as doing what you feel, Stein

:18:27. > :18:35.was in concert with me, and my hands were just shaking, I was feeling the

:18:36. > :18:39.spirit, and some woman had read why next to me, and my hands knocked it

:18:40. > :18:41.her brand-new purse, and I had to reimburse her to get it cleaned,

:18:42. > :18:47.because she was definitely looking at me to reimburse. But that won't

:18:48. > :18:52.happen tomorrow night, but if you do feel spirited, please clap,

:18:53. > :18:57.stand-up, engage. Right now with the times of the entire world, it is in

:18:58. > :19:02.such chaos, Gospel means good news, so we can just spread the good news.

:19:03. > :19:07.And you will be singing? We have a clip of you in your full gospel

:19:08. > :19:15.glory. # Are not worried about a thing

:19:16. > :19:21.# Because I know you are guiding me APPLAUSE

:19:22. > :19:24.And they were, Beyonce was there as well, and you just touched on it

:19:25. > :19:27.there, the world at the moment is going through difficult times, and

:19:28. > :19:33.we know Beyonce has been supporting Black Lives Matter.

:19:34. > :19:39.We have seen a lot of images on the news with Baton Rouge and Dallas.

:19:40. > :19:44.How does it feel at home? At the moment, people are waking up, trying

:19:45. > :19:50.to figure out what is the next move to bring peace. We know there needs

:19:51. > :19:59.to be piece, but it goes beyond just tweeting about it, there is a

:20:00. > :20:05.movement going on, and people want every life to matter. We do know all

:20:06. > :20:09.lives matter, but for some reason, specifically when it comes to what

:20:10. > :20:13.we have been seeing at home with interaction with police, it just

:20:14. > :20:20.seems like black lives don't matter right now. So we are hoping that all

:20:21. > :20:28.the chaos going on right now is not a direct, I would not say, Black

:20:29. > :20:35.Lives Matter, that movement was not burst for violence. You even have

:20:36. > :20:41.victims' family members pleading to protest in peace. But then you will

:20:42. > :20:46.have that one bad apple who comes to a protest which is meant to be

:20:47. > :20:51.peaceful, who wants to inflict violence on another innocent life,

:20:52. > :20:57.and I feel like it is not the way to go. Nowhere in the world should it

:20:58. > :21:01.be OK. It is not OK to just walk up to somebody and decide you are going

:21:02. > :21:07.to take their life. No matter where you are, it is not OK. Our thoughts

:21:08. > :21:15.go out to everybody caught up in it. But tomorrow night, my plan is, I

:21:16. > :21:23.have an amazing platform, and my job is to be a light wherever I am, so

:21:24. > :21:36.if I can bring joy and good news through gospel music, then I am

:21:37. > :21:38.doing my job. Amen to that! Late Night Gospel Prom is on

:21:39. > :21:42.tomorrow night, and you can watch and listen live.

:21:43. > :21:45.As well as gospel music, churches have found a new way

:21:46. > :21:47.of spreading the word this past week still, by welcoming in devotees

:21:48. > :21:50.of the gaming phenomenon that's taken the world by storm.

:21:51. > :22:00.If, like me, you still don't know your Jigglypuffs

:22:01. > :22:03.from your Pickachus - don't worry, help is at hand.

:22:04. > :22:16.I want a char is a hard. I want to Pikachu. Back in the 90s, it was a

:22:17. > :22:20.huge bestselling video game, but now it has been brought up-to-date with

:22:21. > :22:24.an app called Pokemon Go, which is sending gamers hunting everywhere.

:22:25. > :22:29.So why is everyone going crazy about this one? It is designed to make you

:22:30. > :22:35.get up and roam around, you can't play this sat on your sofa. A CEO

:22:36. > :22:42.via somewhere? What is it that is so addictive. Whenever you are going

:22:43. > :22:45.anywhere, you may as well have it open because you can make progress,

:22:46. > :22:49.it is a master play to bring every body outside away from the consoles.

:22:50. > :22:54.Talk me through it, what do I have to do? We can go to different

:22:55. > :23:04.landmarks around the city that are called Poke stops. You can see

:23:05. > :23:11.people coming from every direction. They are around us right now's that

:23:12. > :23:17.is freaky! It is exciting. So who is playing nearby? So many people are

:23:18. > :23:22.going, it is free, I will try it, now we have something in common. How

:23:23. > :23:27.addictive is it? It is addictive, you can do it while you are walking

:23:28. > :23:30.around, so it doesn't make you feel like you are wasting time and

:23:31. > :23:34.spending an hour and a half with a stupid game. It gets you out, gets

:23:35. > :23:39.you walking. Have you met any other Pokemon players? Yes, couple of guys

:23:40. > :23:46.around the corner. Is this a cool thing for a guy to be able to do? It

:23:47. > :23:54.is probably a good pick-up line? Really? So, what is a lure? It is

:23:55. > :23:59.something when you get high enough level, you can place it in the local

:24:00. > :24:05.landmark, and other people will come to look for it. It is time to drop

:24:06. > :24:09.my very first lure. See that guy with the Red Hat and trainers, he is

:24:10. > :24:14.playing as well, there is more activity happening right here or

:24:15. > :24:18.because of my lure. You are my first Pokemon friend! How much walking

:24:19. > :24:25.have you done? Walking around all the time. It has not all been

:24:26. > :24:30.Pokemon friendly, as the interactive features of the app have led to

:24:31. > :24:34.concerns over child safety. At DNS PCC we're disappointed that Nintendo

:24:35. > :24:39.have launched this without really fully putting in child safety

:24:40. > :24:44.features. It is a fun, creative, engaging game, but it hasn't thought

:24:45. > :24:47.about safety for children. We would like to see better safety features

:24:48. > :24:51.so that adults cannot see where children are when they are out and

:24:52. > :24:56.about. How do you know what you will see when you turn up at a lure? You

:24:57. > :25:12.don't, you could just walk the other way if you think there is something

:25:13. > :25:16.dodgy going on. Now grab the Poke Ball and for it at him. This has

:25:17. > :25:25.left me with an appetite, I think my Pikachu will go for a pizza or to!

:25:26. > :25:31.The mind boggles, Brenda. My mind is always boggling! . Does that appeal

:25:32. > :25:36.to you Michelle? No, because I feel like I would be the one looking down

:25:37. > :25:40.and run into a pole or a bus or something. In the break, we were

:25:41. > :25:47.saying that someone discovered their boyfriend cheating playing this

:25:48. > :25:52.game, he didn't turn the GPS off. Guys, keep the GPS on, we want to

:25:53. > :25:58.know where you are all the time! She saw one of his captures was at his

:25:59. > :26:08.ex-kill friend's house. So keep your GPS on! -- his ex-girlfriend's

:26:09. > :26:14.house. Is there a talk about you getting back together with Kelly and

:26:15. > :26:18.Beyonce, to do a track together? Every interview I do, the question

:26:19. > :26:22.is asked and I never have a new answer. It is something we never

:26:23. > :26:29.talk about. We see each other once or twice a month ashore, but I don't

:26:30. > :26:33.see that in the future, I see friendship. And support. From the

:26:34. > :26:37.clip we played earlier on, they are up there with you, doing the music

:26:38. > :26:42.for the right reasons. It depends on what it is, if it is something

:26:43. > :26:45.meaningful that requires us to be powerful together right now, let's

:26:46. > :26:50.go for it, but I personally, there is no talk of that right now. In

:26:51. > :26:55.your future, do you seek coming back and doing stage or theatre here? I

:26:56. > :27:08.would love to do theatre. I had a wonderful time doing Chicago. You

:27:09. > :27:14.were the first black Roxy. I was! Roxy, Roxy... That is some good

:27:15. > :27:23.black history news. For you on the BBC One show. It is awesome to do

:27:24. > :27:35.theatre, something I love doing, I am reprising my role of Aida insect

:27:36. > :27:38.Lewis -- in St Louis. Most of the time when you do musical theatre,

:27:39. > :27:47.the theatres are intimate, maybe 2000 people, but 10,000 people? I

:27:48. > :27:51.did Aida 13 years ago, so it will be interesting to see how I will play

:27:52. > :27:58.her now as a grown woman. Michelle, it has been lovely to see you.

:27:59. > :28:01.The Late Night Gospel Prom is at the Royal Albert Hall tomorrow

:28:02. > :28:05.You can watch live on BBC iPlayer, or listen live on BBC Radio 3.

:28:06. > :28:08.And thanks also to you, Brenda.

:28:09. > :28:13.I'll be back tomorrow with Nina Wadiya on this side of the sofa,

:28:14. > :28:16.Playing us out now with Stand Up, it's

:28:17. > :28:26.# Sometimes friends they let you down

:28:27. > :28:32.# No need to worry or wear a frown

:28:33. > :28:43.# Stand cos there's no need to give up

:28:44. > :29:20.# We have to learn to live together # Stand-up

:29:21. > :29:26.# In peace and harmony # Everybody needs to get together

:29:27. > :29:34.# Stand-up # Stand up

:29:35. > :29:35.# I've got to stand, you've got to stand, we've got to stand, stand up!
